• Installed SQL Server 2008 and now TFS is broken.

  Hi, My W2K3 server was running TFS 2008 SP1, SQL Server 2005 Development edition. I installed SQL Server 2008 Standard. I installed it while leaving SQL Server 2005 alone. Upgrading was not possible due to the differences in editions of the SQL Servers. Now TFS is broken. On a client computer, if I go Team - Connect to Team Foundation Server, I get this error: Team Foundation services are not available from server myserver. Technical information (for administrator): TF30059: Fatal error while initializing web service. So I head on over to my event viewer on the server. Under Application, I see one warning and two errors. • Word 2007 - Pasted Text Not Spellchecked??

  My Word 2007 spell-check seems to work fine, except that when I paste in text from somewhere else, it won't detect any misspellings in that pasted text...no matter what I try. If it makes any difference, when I paste in text, the formatting is preserved (size color etc). I've tried doing a past-special and trying the different options there, but it's still bringing the formatting over. Any ideas on what to try?

• Merge changes in Microsoft Word documents

  I'm using Microsoft Word 2002 to maintain some documentation. The documents are stored in a version control repository (Subversion) together with the source code it documents. My Subversion client (TortoiseSVN) comes with a little VBA script that allows to leverage the built-in revisions feature when merging different branches. In other words, when I want to copy changes from one document to another, Word compares both documents (source and target) and builds a third document that has the contents of the source doc tagged as revisions, so I can then review differences one by one and confirm or discard changes. While this is handy, it also means that making a single change to the source document forces me to review all the differences between both documents and discard all of them except the only actual change. My questions is... Do you know about an application or plug-in that's able to find the differences between two Word documents and apply those differences to a third document? (I know 2002 is very old but that's what my company gives me; I'm open to solutions that use newer versions though.)

  The compare function in Word 2007 is very handy -- is there a similar capability in Excel 2007? I can't seem to find it... The documents I'm trying to compare are essentially two versions of the same content. Unfortunately, "Track Changes" has not been used. • Sending Tasks using an offline Outlook

  Hi All, I've a scenario wherein I need to send/assign tasks from my browser UI to the concerned. This should happen with Outlook being offline (or for that matter outlook not even configured on the terminal) so that the user can be accessing a workflow from any terminal (using his/her AD credentials) and if required should have the ability to send a task to the concerned without having to return to his own terminal to be able to do so. I envision that the user's credentials should be used to look up the AD for his/her email ID and send a task using the same from anywhere in the intranet. Using Outlook object library I have been able to assign/send tasks, but with the Outlook being fired up and not otherwise. Redemption does the sync of contacts while Outlook is offline but not tasks. Kindly help if anybody has had a chance to do something similar. Thanks in advance.

  Great event : Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Launch @ Microsoft TechEd Blore   I was really excited on attending the day 1 of Microsoft TechEd 2010 in Bangalore. This is the first Teched that am attending. The event was really fun filled with lot of knowledge sharing sessions and lots of goodies and gifts by the partners Initially the Event Started by Murthy's Session. He explained about the Developers relating to the 5 elements of nature (Pancha Boothaas) 1. Fire - Passion 2. Wave (Water) - Catch the right wave which we need to apply. 3. Earth - Connections and lots of opportunities around the world 4. Air -  Its whatever we breathe. Developers.. Without them nothing is possible. they are like the air 5. Sky - Cloud based applications   Next the Keynote and the announcement of Visual Studio by SomaSegar. List of things that he delivered his speech on : 1. Announcement of Visual Studio 2010 2. Announcement of .NET 4.0 3. Announcement of Silverlight later this week 4. What is the current Trend? Microsoft has done a research with many developers across the globe and have got the following feedback from the users. Get Lost (interrupted) - When we do some work and somebody is calling or interrepting by someother way we lose track of what we were doing and we need to do from the start Falling Behind- Technology gets updated  phenomenally over a period of time and developers always have a scenario like they are not in the state of the art technology and they always have a doubt whether they are staying updated. Lack of Collobaration - When a Manager asks a person what the team members have done and some might be done and some might not be and finally all are into a state like we dont know where we are. So they have addressed these 3 points in the VS 2010 by the following features : Get Lost - Some cool features which could overcome this. We have some Graphical interface. which could show what we have done and where we are. Some Zoom features in the code level. Falling Behind - Everything is based on .NET language base. 2010 has been built in such a way that if developers know the native language that's enough for building good applications. Lack of Collobaration - Some Dashboard Features which would show where exactly the project is. And a graphical user interface is shown on clicking which it directly drills down even to the code level. 5. An overview on all new features in VS 2010. 6. Some good demos of new features in VS 2010 by Polita and one more girl. Some of the new features included : 1. Team Explorer 2. Zoom in Code 3. Ribbon Development 4. Development in Single Platform for Windows Phone, XBox, Zune, Azure, Web Based and Windows based applications 5. Sequence Diagram Generation directly from code 6. Dashboards to show project status 7. Javascript and JQuery intellisense 8. Native support for JQuery 9. Packaging feature while deploying. 10. Generation of different versions of web.config like Web.Config.Production, Web.Config.Staging, etc. 11. IntelliTrace - Eliminating the "Not Reproducible" statement. 12. Automated User Interface Testing. At last in the closing of the day we had a great event called Demo Extravaganza, where lot of cool projects that were launched by Microsoft and also the projects that are under research were also shown. I got a lot of info about Bing today. BING really rocks!!! It has the following : 1. Visual Search 2. Product based search. For each product different menu filters were provided to make an advanced search 3. BING Maps was awesome!! It zoomed in to the street level and we can assume that we are the persons who are walking or running on the road and we can see the real objects like buildings moving by our side. 4. PhotoSynth was used in BING to show up all the images taken around the globe in a 3D format. 5. Formula - If we give some formula it automatically gives the value for the variable or derivation of expression Also some info about some kool touch apps which does an authentication and computation of Teched Attendee's Points that they have scored and the sessions attended. One guy won an XBOX in lucky draw as a gift. There were lot of Partner Stalls like Accenture,Intel,Citrix,MicroFocus,Telerik,infragistics,Sapient etc. Some Offers were provided for us like 50% off on Certifications, 1 free Elearning Course, etc. Stay tuned!! • How to send a message directly if Outlook is only temporarily active for "mailto:" links?

  Is there any way to configure Outlook to send messages without Outlook being open? We're currently using a system where the "Email Page" opens an Outlook Sendto window. You can click "Send", but the message stays in the "Outbox" until you open Outlook. I'm trying to get around opening Outlook. Anyone have any ideas?

• How Microsoft Market DotNet?

  I just read an Joel's article about Microsoft's breaking change (non-backwards compatibility) with dot net's introduction. It is interesting and explicitly reflected the condition during that time. But now almost 10 years has passed. The breaking change It is mainly on how bad is Microsoft introducing non-backwards compatibility development tools, such as dot net, instead of improving the already-widely used asp classic or VB6. As much have known, dot net is not natively embedded in windows XP (yes in vista or 7), so in order to use the .net apps, you need to install the .net framework of over 300mb (it's big that day). However, as we see that nowadays many business use .net as their main development tools, with asp.net or mvc as their web-based applications. C# nowadays be one of tops programming languages (the most questions in stackoverflow). The more interesing part is, win32api still alive even there is newer technology out there (and still widely used). Imagine if microsoft does not introduce the breaking change, there will many corporates still uses asp classic or vb-based applications (there still is, but not that much). There are many corporates use additional services such as azure or sharepoint (beside how expensive is it). Please note that I also know there are many flagships applications (maybe adobe's and blizzard's) still use C-based or older language and not porting to newer high-level language. The question How can Microsoft persuade the users to migrate their old applications into dot net? As we have known it is very hard and give no immediate value when rewrite the applications (netscape story), and it is very risky. I am more interested in Microsoft's way and not opinion such as "because dot net is OOP, or dot net is dll-embedable, etc". This question may be constructive, as the technology is vastly changes over times lately. As we can see, Microsoft changes Asp.Net webform to MVC, winform is legacy now, it is starting to change to use windows store rather than basic-installment, touchscreen and later on we will have see-through applications such as google class. And that will be breaking changes. We will need to account portability as an issue nowadays. We will need other than just mere technology choice, but also migration plans. Even maybe as critical as we might need multiplatform language compiler, as approached by Joel's Wasabi. (hey, I read his articles too much!)

• Can it be a good idea to lease a house rather than a standard office-space for a software development shop? [closed]

  Our lease is up on our US-based office-space in July, so it's back on my radar to evaluate our office-space situation. Two of our partners rather like the idea of leasing a house rather than standard office-space. We have 4 partners and one employee. I'm against the idea at this moment in time. Pros, as I see them Easier to get a good location (minimize commutes) All partners/employees have dogs. Easier to work longer hours without dog-duties pulling people back home More comfortable bathroom situation Residential Internet Rate Control of the thermostat Clients don't come to our office, so this would not change our image The additional comfort-level should facilitate a significantly higher-percentage of time "in the zone" for programmers and artists. Cons, as I see them Additional bills to pay (house-cleaning, yard, util, gas, electric) Additional time-overhead in dealing with bills (house-cleaning, yard, util, gas, electric) Additional overhead required to deal with issues that maintenance would have dealt with in a standard office-space Residential neighbors to contend with The equation starts to look a little nasty when factoring in potential time-overhead, especially on issues that a maintenance crew would deal with at a standard office complex. Can this be a good thing for a software development shop?

• Outlook Interop Send Message from Account

  Okay, the specs have changed on this one somewhat. Maybe someone can help me with this new problem. Manually, what the user is doing is opening an new message in Outlook (2007 now) which has the "From..." field exposed. They open this up, select a certain account from the Global Address List, and send the message on behalf of that account. Is this possible to do? I can get the AddressEntry from the Global address list like so: AddressList list = null; foreach (AddressList addressList in _outlookApp.Session.AddressLists) { if (addressList.Name.ToLower().Equals("global address list")) { list = addressList; break; } } if (list != null) { AddressEntry entry = null; foreach (AddressEntry addressEntry in list.AddressEntries) { if (addressEntry.Name.ToLower().Equals("outgoing mail account")) { entry = addressEntry; break; } } } But I'm not sure I can make an Account type from the Address Entry. It seems to happen manually, when they select the address to send from. How do I mirror this in the Interop? Thanks! (My Original Question): I developed a small C# program to send email using the Outlook 2007 interop. The client required that the mail not be send using the default account - they had a secondary account they needed used. No problem - I used the Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.Account class to access the availabled accounts, and choose the correct one. Now, it turns out they need this to work in Outlook 2003. Of course, the Account class doesn't exist in the Outlook interop 11.0. How can I achieve the same thing with Outlook 2003? Thanks in advance.

• Outlook 2010: People pane not working well

  I really like the new People pane in Outlook 2010. Not for the "Social" features, but for finding related emails and attachments. But.. I does not work. It is totally broken. On some people does not show any mail, and only some mails in others. I've tried re-indexing and recreating the profile, not to avail. Do you know some trick to make it work? Using 32bits outlook, without Exchange, only local.

• iPhone - Outlook 2010 sync'd items

  I'm not sure if this is a problem with Outlook 2010, or the fact that I don't have an Exchange box, or the fact that I have two MAPI mailboxes (both using Outlook Live Connector), or something else... so let me just describe the situation. iTunes says that I'm sync'ing happily, all the Calendar, Contact items, Notes... and if I have changed several things I get the "you're changing more than 5% of items" warning, persuading me that the sync'ing is working. I just can't find those items on my PC. They're not sync'ing with either of my Live accounts (Calendar or Contacts), and I can't find any track of anything. iTunes says I have Calendar folders called "" and "Calendar", but doesn't show any Contact groups at all. So how do I find out where they're going to... or change where they're going to... or anything?

  I have an account with on Yahoo! Mail, another on Gmail. In Outlook 2007, I've set them up so that I can access them without having to go to their websites. I've password protected my personal folder, but can't find a way to merge my accounts into one personal folder. When I want to switch between my accounts, I must type my password again. Besides that, I can't check for new mail messages in both accounts at the same time. How do I merge multiple email accounts into one single personal folder on Outlook 2007?

• How to avoid the configuring ms office dialog box

  I always see the configuring ms office with a an endless progress bar, 2 or more weeks after I installed ms office(2000, 2003, 2010 beta). I'm not exactly sure what it is called but it is trying to configure ms office.Or maybe repairing the installation. And it sucks because when I need to access ms word NOW, I can only see that box with the progress bar. And when I press cancel, it won't open ms word, or maybe the whole suite(ms word, powerpoint, excel) What might be a possible solution to this?anyone here who has encountered it before

• Exchange 2003 Outlook Anywhere - Changed certificate, not working

  I have a single Exchange 2003 installation which for the past 2 years has been set up for Outlook Anywhere access by means of a self-signed certificate. Just this past week I updated that certificate to a Go Daddy wildcard certificate to allow for use of our web services over https. I've updated the web listener on our ISA 2006 firewall and I can successfully use our services over https. However, my Outlook Anywhere access is now not functioning. I've installed the new wildcard certificate on my XP notebook into the Trusted Root Certificate Store but I keep getting prompted that the password is incorrect. To make things even more confusing I also have OWA set up and this works fine with the new certificate. Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong?

• Outlook receives winmail.txt attachment instead of Excel, PowerPoint or Word attachments from Lotus notes senders

  Ok so the title pretty much says it all. We are offering a Hosted Exchange solution for our customer. Everything is working fine except for one customer complaining that he is receiving winmail.dat or winmail.txt attachments instead of the actual Word Excel or PowerPoint attachments he should be receiving, only when these messages come from a specific European senders, that is using Lotus Notes. I know that usually the problem is coming from Outlook senders to other mail clients, but this is not the first they inform me of this but I can't find anything on the matter so far. Has anyone ever gotten and solved this problem? If not, does anyone have any idea regarding this? I had solved this problem a few months ago, by upgrading Outlook to SP2 and then uninstalling it using the Service Pack removing tool of Microsoft. It seems that only the latest SP1 version could work but not the SP2. The problem is that now nothing is working at all. Thank you for your help, Philippe

• Office 2010 beta affects trial instalation

  I've found that after expiration of Office 2010 beta when I want to install trial, installation always ends up with an error 25400, even if everything is uninstalled. I've read that it's because Office refuses to install a trial after using a key that expires (like beta one). If so, is there a solution to reset that? I really need that trial. Please note that I don't want do anything illegal - I just want to use my obtained trial after betatesting Office 2010 before.
