• Two internships at the same time -- good or bad?

  I had no internship a few months ago, so I basically went on a 'resume mailing' spree and emailed a lot of companies that I was interested in working for and that had my line of work. This didn't prove futile until a company accepted me into their internship program but said that I would be working remotely. I had no problem with that, the project was good and I was interested. Now I have another internship at a company that is close to my home and I don't want to miss it at all! I can manage both internships side-by-side. In the day, I will do the internship that is closer to my home and at night (and other times), I can manage the remote internship. My question is -- should I both? I am particularly interested in how two internships at the same time are viewed. Would it look good or bad? PS: Neither is paying me anything, so money is not a factor.

  I realize this is a bit of a broad question, but I was wondering if there is a "standard" in the industry when it comes to storing save data for games (and is it different across platforms - Xbox/PS/PC/Mac/Android/iOS?) For example for a game like Assassin's Creed or The Walking Dead: They are on multiple platforms and they usually have to save enough information about the player and their actions. Do they use something like XML files, databases, or just straight binary dumps? How much does it differ from platform to platform? • Detecting long held keys on keyboard

  I just want to ask if can I check for "KEY"(keyboard) that is HOLD/PRESSED for a long time, because I am to create a clone of breakout with air hockey for 2 different human players. Here's the list of my concern: Do I need other/ 3rd party library for KEY HOLDS? Is multi-threading needed? I don't know anything about this multi-threading stuff and I don't think about using one(I'm just a NEWBIE). One more thing, what if the two players pressed their respective key at the same time, how can I program to avoid error or worse one player's key is prioritized first before the the key of the other. example: Player 1 = W for UP & S for DOWN Player 2 = O for UP & L for DOWN (example: W & L is pressed at the same time) PS: I use GLUT for the visuals of the game.

• Purple screen on boot, iMac

  I have just installed Ubuntu 13.10 (special iMac iso found here) on the new iMac (dual boot). Installation of rEFIt was completed successfully, as well as the installation of Ubuntu itself. After the final reboot, rEFIt sees this distributive and allows the choice. When I select "Boot linux from HD", it sends me to grub screen, where I can select Ubuntu. And then it gets stuck on the purple screen (smpboot: Booting Node 0, Processors #1 -- for the recovery mode) with no further action. Does anybody know a solution to this problem? P.S.: I have also tried both 32 and 64-bit pc distributives (occasionally) with the same result.

  Hi there, I need to find a way to convert docx or odt files to pdf on a linux web server. Therefore I'm not willing to install openoffice.org for obvious reasons. I've tried Google but it failed for me, so I'm here :-) I can't imagine there's no other solution to this problem than to install a huge chunk of binaries given that a) there are (or at least should be) lot's of packages which can read docx or at least odt and b) there are as many packages which can write pdf files What am I missing here? scratching head Regards, luxifer ps edit: I don't want to use a web service - neither free or paid edit 2: at this point it would also help to convert the docx back to doc so I could use wvpdf to generate the pdf... edit 3: of course it would also help if i could do search and replace on a doc file in the first place; or xps for that matter

• External USB 3 drive not recognized

  Ubuntu 12.10 64 bit seems not to recognize my external hard disk. It is a Vantec NST-310S3 external disk enclosure with a WD 3TB drive. The disk has two NTFS partitions. My PC is a dual boot system. Under Windows 7 the hard disk works fine but I can't make it work with Ubuntu. When the drive is connected to the PC then the command sudo fdisk -l seems to hang forever. Below are the output of lsusb and cat /proc/partitions without the external drive and then with it connected. I added also the last lines of the dmesg command at the end. • How is game development different from other software development?

  For a solid general purpose software developer, what specifically is different about game development, either fundamentally or just differences in degree? I've done toy games like Tic-tac-toe, Tetris, and a brute-force sudoku solver (with UI) and I'm now embarking on a mid-sized project (mid-sized for being a single developer and not having done many games) and one thing I've found with this particular project is that separation of concerns is a lot harder since everything affects state, and every object can interact with every other object in a myriad of ways. So far I've managed to keep the code reasonably clean for my satisfaction but I find that keeping clean code in non-trivial games is a lot harder than it is for my day job. The game I'm working on is turn-based and the graphics are going to be fairly simple (web-based, mostly through DOM manipulation) so real time and 3d work aren't really applicable to me, but I'd still be interested in answers regarding those if they're interesting. Mostly interested in general game logic though. P.S. Feel free to retag this, I'm not really sure what tags are applicable.

  We're planning on developing a 2D, grid-based puzzle game, and although it's still very early in the planning stages, we'd like to make our decisions well from the beginning. Our strategy will be to make the game available to as many platforms as possible, for example PCs (Windows, Mac and/or Linux), mobile phones (iPhone and/or Android based phones), game consoles (XBLA and/or PSN) PC will have an emphasis, but I believe that's the most flexible platform so that shouldn't be a problem. So, what programming language, game engine, frameworks and all around tools would be best suited for our goal? P.S.: I'm betting a set of tools won't cover ALL of them, and that there will still be some kind of "translating" effort for some platforms, but we'd like to know what the most far reaching are.

  What would a system like BOINC look like if it were written today? At the time BOINC was written, databases were the primary choice for maintaining a shared state and concurrency among nodes. Since then, many approaches have been developed for tasking with optimistic concurrency (OT, partial synchronization primitives, shared iterators etc.) Is there an optimal paradigm for optimistically distributing units of work on sparsely distributing systems which communicate through message passing? Sorry if this is a bit vague. P.S. The concept of Tuple-spaces is great, but locking is inherent to its definition. Edit: I already have a federation system which works very well. I have a reactive OT system is implemented on top of it. I'm looking to extend it to get clients to do units of work.

• Why does update-notifier contains system-crash-notification?

  I just had "System Program Problem Detected" window appearing several times before user session even started (I have KDM with autologin to locked session). I traced it with xprop to being /usr/lib/update-notifier/system-crash-notification which is binary (while I expected it to be some script) and belongs to update-notifier package (while I expected it to be somewhere from apport*). P.S. • Where is Kile's dictionary?

  Hi, I've accidentally added 'itterative' to Kile's dictionary (right click on the wrong button). Now I'd like to remove 'itterative' from the list of correct words but I can't locate the dictionary anymore (the old link in settings-configure kile ) does not link to where it used to... • Minimum brightness level is brighter than the levels just above it

  I'm using a macbook pro 8,1. When I use the brightness keys on the keyboard, decreasing the brightness works until it reaches the lowest brightness level. At that point (when on the lowest level), the brightness is something like 70 or 80% instead of 0-10% (or whatever it usually is). All the other levels are fine. How can I adjust/calibrate these brightness controls? PS: I'm currently using 12.04 but I've had the same issue no later than 11.10 (and I'm fairly confident it was present in 11.04 as well). UPDATE: If I go to System Settings and select "Brightness and Lock" the exact same thing happens, but there is more fine grained control of the brightness. It goes to completely black when the dial is about 10% from the left edge. When it passes that point, anywhere inside that left 10% appears to be about 70 - 80% brightness (there's no change regardless of where the dial is in this section).

• why not use unmanaged safe code in c#

  There is an option in c# to execute code unchecked. It's generally not advised to do so, as managed code is much safer and it overcomes a lot of problems. However I am wondering, if you're sure your code won't cause errors, and you know how to handle memory then why (if you like fast code) follow the general advice? I am wondering this since I wrote a program for a video camera, which required some extremely fast bitmap manipulation. I made some fast graphical algorithms myself, and they work excellent on the bitmaps using unmanaged code. Now I wonder in general, if you're sure you don't have memory leaks, or risks of crashes, why not use unmanaged code more often ? PS my background: I kinda rolled into this programming world and I work alone (I do so for a few years) and so I hope this software design question isn't that strange. I don't really have other people out there like a teacher to ask such things.

  Hi, I am starting some tests for building a game on the android program. So far everything is working and seems nice. However I do not understand how to make sure my game looks correct on all phones as the all will have slightly different screen ratios (and even very different on some odd phones) What I am doing right now is making a view frustrum ( could also be ortho ) which I set to go from -ratio to +ratio ( as I have seen on many examples) however this causes my test shape to be stretched and sometimes cut off by the edge of the screen. I am tilting my phone to landscape to do my tests ( a bit extreame) but it should still render correctly if I have dome things right. Should I be scaling by some ratio before drawing or something?   The dvd-drive of a notebook is a MatshitaBD-CMB UJ-120 Hint for you. e.g. Debian Installation-CD with Debian 6.0 resp. Debian 6.0.3 was working fine and has no trouble with this device. Installation-CD with Debian 6.0.4 is behaving same like the Ubuntu-Server-12.04-CD.   I was at home uploading a WP site and it's maxing at 4.2kb. I did a speed test and im getting ~1MB upload (my home ISP caps it out at that). I uploaded a 5MB file via Chrome, to test, and it uploaded within 2 mins. The file uploaded was a wordpress.xml file through the uploader. Same file in nautilus is taking forever. To upload this WP site and all the plugins took 1 hour. Any ideas of why or how? P.S. I've been using my hosting company also for years and they've never had any speed issues uploading.
