• Exchange 2007 dropping attachments

  We have a strange situation that I am trying to resolve. One of our users is reporting that some emails that contain attachments are not coming through to them. After some investigation it appears that they do infact recieve the emails but the attachment is missing. I check the message tracking logs and what appears to be happening is that the server recieves an email, which is then forwarded to the correct mailbox. A couple of minutes later another email, from the same sender is recieved - but this is much larger so I'm assuming contains the attachment. This email has the same messageId as the previous email and as a result appears not to be delivered to the users mailbox, instead being marked with an EventID of DUPLICATEDELIVER. • Backup solution

  We are currently looking for a new backup solution. Our current network is 5 remote location with a tape backup in each plant. Right now we are looking at a MPLS VPN and running backups out of our main plant. The main thing that we backup are user private folders and department files. And each plant has it's own file server that houses CAD drawings. My main plan is to have every thing but that CAD drawing at the main faculty. We would start with a main backup of the drawing files and then do change backups back to the main plant. Besides tapes what would be the best way to backup. Our contact at Pc Connection is point us toward a Tandberg Data device.

• Mail not going through : Sendmail Issue

  Some of the mails for a particular domain are not getting delivered from our mail server. We are using sendmail for mail server. Fallowing can be seen in log Oct 21 13:24:59 mailser sendmail[5407]: r9L7st1a005405: to=<[email protected]>, delay=00:00:03, xdelay=00:00:03, mailer=esmtp, pri=120539, relay=mailgw.test.in. [164.X.X.19], dsn=2.0.0, stat=Sent (ok: Message 289953693 accepted) FOr other domains like yahoo , gmail etc it is working fine . But if I send the mail through commandline using mailx command from the same server , the message is going through... • Windows PC's Intermittant Network faults.

  Hello everyone, im running into some issues with our client PC's (windows xp sp3 systems). this morning we ran into some problems with PC's not connecting to internal / external systems intermittantly. this would manifest as a problem connecting to any service, email, web, backoffice database systems etc. given a random amount of time be it a few minutes etc the problem would disapear and the pc would carry on as normal, some systems however have not been able to connect to certain sytems since the problem initally happened. im hoping for some suggestions / network diag advice really to help me locate the cause of this problem. all the clients are windows xp, connecting to a domain controller that is windows 2003 std this server also acts as a DNS server for us. we also have websense 7.0.1 installed on it to filter traffic.

• Prevent Windows Exporer to extract metadata

  Windows Explorer (windows 7 x64) crashes when it sees allegedly corrupted .wav files. I'm dealing with this problem and the hotfix doesn't work for me: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976417/en-us The hotfix says that this happens if the .wav file is corrupt (which btw I don't think it is). What makes this even worse is that I can't access the file in any program! As soon as the open dialog sees the file, windows tries it's metadata extraction trick and exporer.exe halts. So my question: Can I by any means tell windows to stop this "metadata extraction" action ? (I have seen multiple problems associated with it in the past).

• Cisco 2900 series router - 3x 3g HWIC - Can you use the same subnet for each HWIC?

  We host a site with a 2900 series router with 3x 3G-HWIC cards installed. It is hosted with telstra and plugs into our corporate WAN. The card authenticates against radius and advertises a route into the WAN for which subnet it routes for. We have always used the same advertised subnet on each. Telstra have advised us that this could be the cause of some drop out issues whereby some services will work for some people and not for others and are saying effectively that their system will only use one of these at a time even though we can see the interface is online and assigned a WAN IP address. Has anyone out there configured a multi HWIC setup before and if so are they using different subnets for each or the same?

• Sharing / replicating EBS across AWS nodes

  I would like to use single EBS storage across multiple EC2 nodes (web/app servers). I've read some articles on snapshot sharing, but that doesn't suit well for what we need. We use filesystem for storing DB record attachments, so if one such attachment gets created, we need it to be immediately available to all nodes (to serve). So far only NFS seem to be viable, but it's a pain to configure and maintain. Another option could be storing those attachments on S3 instead, but that would cut us of doing any analysis on that data. This must be quite common problem when scaling in AWS, what solutions are there?

• How to force ADF to speak your language (or any common language)

  When I started working for Oracle, one of the first tasks I was given was to contribute some content to a great ADF course Frank and Chris are building. Among other things, they asked me to work on a module about Internationalization. While doing research work, I unearthed a little gem I had overlooked all those years. JDeveloper, as you may know, speaks your language - as long as your language is English, that is. Oracle ADF, on the other hand, is a citizen of the world. It is available in more than 25 different languages. But while this is a wonderful feature for end users, it is rather cumbersome for developers. Why is that? Have you ever tried to search the OTN forums for a solution with a non-English error message as your query? I have, once. But how can you force ADF to use English for its logging operations? Playing with your system settings will not help, unfortunately. By default, ADF will output its error messages in the selected locale for the operating system account the application server runs on. The only way to change this behavior is to pass initialization parameters to the JVM used by the application server. It is even possible to specify the language and country/region separately. In the example below, we choose English and the United States respectively. -Duser.language=en -Duser.country=US In the case of WebLogic Server, it is possible to add such parameters in setDomainEnv.sh (or .cmd) to apply the settings to all the managed servers present on a node. • How do I make the PC Zune download a movie, not stream it?

  As the title suggests - I have bought a TV show series season on PC Zune. My girlfriend watched the show, and now I'd like to be able to watch the show too. The catch - I'm going to go overseas on a trip soon, and I'd like to be able to watch the show from outside the US. Given that Zune won't let me stream things overseas (past experience, anyway), I would like to download the show to my computer and watch it that way. The problem is that although the full season has been "watched" it appears it was only streamed, not downloaded. Or rather, that one episode was downloaded, and the rest streamed. I bought a season pass (so all the episodes at once) and the show was bought, not rented. How do I make Zune download, not stream, a show?

• meeting availability using iPhone/iOS calendars

  Our management team all use iPhones with the built-in iOS calendar app. We're looking into getting Microsoft Exchange for everyone here, but that'll take us some weeks to plan and roll-out across the enterprise. In the meantime, I need to provide something so group meeting availability can be determined from those calendars. Google Calendar would be ideal ("find a time") if I could find a way to link to/export the iCloud calendars, but Apple don't seem to want to do that. I could ask the management team to recreate their events for the next few weeks in individual Google Calendars, but they won't want to do that and it's wasteful rekeying of data. Any suggestions you can provide will be gratefully received.

• Is there such thing like a "refactoring/maintainability group" role in software companies?

  So, I work in a company that does embedded software development, other groups focus in the core development of different products' software and my department (which is in another geographical location) which is located at the factory has to deal with software development as well, but across all products, so that we can also fix things quicker when the lines go down due to software problems with the product. In other words, we are generalists while other groups specialize on each product. Thing is, it is kind of hard to get involved in core development when you are distributed geographically (well, I know it really isn't that hard, but there might be unintended cultural/political barriers when it comes to the discipline of collaborating remotely). So I figured that, since we are currently just putting fires out and somewhat being idle/sub-utilized (even though we are a new department, or maybe that is the reason), I thought that a good role for us could be detecting areas of opportunity of refactoring and rearchitecting code and all other implementations that might have to do with stewarding maintainability and modularity. Other groups aren't focused on this because they don't have the time and they have aggressive deadlines, which damage the quality of the code (eternal story of software projects) The thing is that I want my group/department to be recognized by management and other groups with this role officially, and I'm having trouble to come up with a good definition/identity of our group for this matter. So my question is: is this role something that already exists?, or am I the first one to make something like this up?

Fortunately, not everyone misses this perspective, including well-respected Java veteran Yakov Fain. Yakov recently started a free online video tutorial series focused on Java and Java EE for absolute beginners. The first few parts of the series focused on Java SE but now Yakov is beginning to cover the very basics of Java EE.   We run Pfsense as our primary firewall. We also have OpenVPN server running on that box to allow us to remotely connect to our network. My question is: if we have a customer's mostly unattended server that we want to access remotely, what security vulnerabilities are there to installing openvpn on the customer's server as a client connecting to our network. Presumably, we would want to limit/restrict that server's access to the rest of our network. How do we lock openvpn down and are there ways to detect abnormal activity coming from an openvpn client?

• Chef command to create new ec2 instance with second ebs volume attached and mounted instead of the default ephemeral volume?

  We currently use this command to create a new ec2 instance with chef: knife ec2 server create --node-name=prod-apache-1 --availability-zone us-east-1c --image ami-3d4ff254 --distro ubuntu12.04-gems --groups "default" --ssh-key foo --identity-file ~/.ssh/id_rsa --ssh-user ubuntu --flavor m1.small After this command we then run further chef commands to finish provisioning the server. I was wondering if it would be possible while first setting up the instance I wanted a 100 gb volume created and mounted at /mnt and to have the ephemeral storage mounted at /tmp or /mnt-ephemeral instead. If not what further commands in chef would you advise running? I know how to do this via the aws console and can probably figure out how to do it via the ec2 command line tools but I am knew to chef and a bit overwhelmed.

• Which simple server virtualization solution to use?

  For one part of our hosting platform we are currently using VMware Server 2 to create two virtual machines on one physical machine. One VM is used for hosting of small websites, the other VM is used as a staging environment. Both the host OS and guest OSes run CentOS Linux. Support for VMWare Server 2 has been discontinued and we are currently looking for a replacement. We only use basic functionality (we don't use snapshots, moving around VMs to different physical machines, or other 'advanced' functionality'). Just a box, with two VMs. We are looking for a virtualization solution that has long-term support, is stable and allows configuration/management from Mac OSx (I understood that Xen only has a Windows client). What would be the right solution for us?

• Start TLS and 389 Directory

  I'm trying to configure Start TLS on 389 Directory server, but I'm having all sorts of issues. I've been following this doc: https://access.redhat.com/knowledge/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Directory_Server/9.0/html/Administration_Guide/managing-certs.html which specifies that I should create a certificate for both the directory server and admin server. I've imported the CA cert on both servers. I've tried to use the same server certificate for both. It will not allow me to do so. However, the admin and directory servers reside on the same host. If I generate a new certificate it will need to use the same hostname. I'm not sure if that's valid... Has anyone out there set this up before? Any direction would be helpful. I have multmaster replication set up. From an external client, I'm attempting to do an ldapsearch -ZZ -x -h "myhost" -b "dc=example,dc=com" -D "cn=Directory Manager" -W "", and I'm getting a protocol error.

• Group policy doesn't let me execute Chrome

  Where I work, the admins just migrated us to Windows 7. They gave me admin rights but still, I had to "Run as Administrator" my Google Chrome installation. After I managed to install it, I realized I even have to go through the "Run as Administrator" shortcut every time I have to execute the application. I even edited the properties of the shortcut to check "Always run as Administrator" but nothing changed. The message I get when I'm trying to launch Chrome is "This program is blocked by group policy. For more information contact your system administrator"... Is it something I could work out alone or I have to convince them to change the "policy"?

  In some cases, I want to use referentially transparent callables while coding in Python. My goals are to help with handling concurrency, memoization, unit testing, and verification of code correctness. I want to write down clear rules for myself and other developers to follow that would ensure referential transparency. I don't mind that Python won't enforce any rules - we trust ourselves to follow them. Note that we never modify functions or methods in place (i.e., by hacking into the bytecode). Would the following make sense? A callable object c of class C will be referentially transparent if: Whenever the returned value of c(...) depends on any instance attributes, global variables, or disk files, such attributes, variables, and files must not change for the duration of the program execution; the only exception is that instance attributes may be changed during instance initialization. When c(...) is executed, no modifications to the program state occur that may affect the behavior of any object accessed through its "public interface" (as defined by us). If we don't put any restrictions on what "public interface" includes, then rule #2 becomes: When c(...) is executed, no objects are modified that are visible outside the scope of c.__call__.   We have a wcf service, that expects to return a huge XML data. It worked ok in testing, but in production it failed with error  "Maximum number of items that can be serialized or deserialized in an object graph is '65536'. Change the object graph or increase the MaxItemsInObjectGraph quota."The MSDN article about   dataContractSerializer xml configuration  element  correctly  describes maxItemsInObjectGraph attribute default as 65536, but documentation for of the DataContractSerializer.MaxItemsInObjectGraph property and DataContractJsonSerializer.MaxItemsInObjectGraph Property are talking about Int32.MaxValue, which causes confusion, in particular because Google shows properties articles before configuration articles.When we changed the value in WCF service configuration, it didn't help, because the similar change must be ALSO done on client.There are similar posts:http://stackoverflow.com/questions/6298209/how-to-fix-maxitemsinobjectgraph-error/6298356#6298356You need to set the MaxItemsInObjectGraph on the dataContractSerializer using a behavior on both the client and service. • How to tell from what Ubuntu or Debian repository a package comes?

  On a Debian-based system, including Ubuntu, how can one tell which repository a package will be downloaded from, without actually beginning the download? aptitude show and apt-cache info will show the section (e.g., metapackage, base, graphics), but not the repository to which a package belongs (e.g., http://ppa.launchpad.net/mactel-support/ppa/ubuntu or http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/). When installing the package, the actual repository appears during the download (it is printed out in the "downloading from ..." output from apt and similar programs), but how can one obtain information on the repository containing the package (or a specific version of a package) without downloading and installing it first? Additionally, how can one determine the source repository for a package that is already installed?

• How is the Trac Project List page customised?

  We've been using Trac for a while now for our developers only. However we are now opening it up for our (internal) clients. We have a project listing page (based on the default one that comes with Trac). What we'd like to do, is display more information about the project than what is currently available. I have searched google and here, to see if I can find how to get more information. There seems to be a variable called $project which has .name, .description and .href as attributes. Is there somewhere, a list of the attributes available? Or perhaps a different solution altogether that will allow us to display more information on the project list page. Such as the number of open tickets etc.

• One way sync with either Dropbox or Google drive on linux and windows

  I could not google this one. I would like to use Dropbox or Google drive only as backup, so I would like to ensure I only upload to those services and never download (unless done manually via the web interface). There would be several of us uploading stuff to one account, so we would need to ensure we don't accidentaly delete something on another guy's machine by doing some changes on our local machine. Is there a simple way to do this automatically - i.e. by running a daemon that will upload eveyuthing in a given folder but never download anything? I am on linux, so that complicates things a bit, but I am also interested in windows solutions.
