  If i want to develop a registry-like System for Linux, which Windows Registry design failures should i avoid? Which features would be absolutely necessary? What are the main concerns (security, ease-of-configuration, ...)? I think the Windows Registry was not a bad idea, just the implementation didn't fullfill the promises. A common place for configurations including for example apache config, database config or mail server config wouldn't be a bad idea and might improve maintainability, especially if it has options for (protected) remote access. I once worked on a kernel based solution but stopped because others said that registries are useless (because the windows registry is)... what do you think?

• What is the benefits and drawbacks of using header files?

  I had some experience on programming languages like Java, C#, Scala as well as some lower level programming language like C, C++, Objective - C. My observation is that low level languages separate out header files and implementation files while other higher level programming language never separate it out. They use some identifiers like public, private, protected to do the jobs of header files. I saw one benefit of using header file (in some book like Code Complete), they talk about that using header files, people can never look at our implementation file and it helps with encapsulation. A drawback is that it creates too many files for me. Sometimes, it looks like verbose. It is just my thought and I don't know if there are any other benefits and drawbacks that people ever see and work with header file This question may not relate directly to programming but I think that if I can understand better about programming to interface, design software.

• Help with IE bugs when writing JSON via an ASPX response

  I have an ASPX page that I am using to write JSON. It works great in Firefox and Chrome, but when I try and use it in IE 8 it gives me an "The XML page cannot be displayed" error instead of allowing jQuery to load the JSON being written by the response. Any ideas?   There is a file that hosted remotely on a server that is not supporting Shell Access. I bought a new server that supports Shell Access so now I want to copy a file that is on the non-supporting server to new server via a Shell Command using Putty. File url is like this http://www.domain.com/file.gzip and it is username/password protected. To be more specific, I want to copy a backup of a home directory from cPanel to my new server via Shell command. I have done this few months ago but I don't remember it now and also I failed to Google it.

However, if I didn't stop the timer, seems the checking will execute every 10s ... • SQL Compact Edition 3.5 SP 1 - LockTimeOutException - how to debug?

  Intermittently in our app, we encounter LockTimeoutExceptions being throw from SQL CE. We've recently upgraded to 3.5 SP 1, and a number of them seem to have gone away, but we still do see them occasionally. I'm certain it's a bug in our code (which is multi-threaded) but I haven't been able to pin it down precisely. Does anyone have any good techniques for debugging this problem? The exceptions log like this (there's never a stack trace for these exceptions): SQL Server Compact timed out waiting for a lock. The default lock time is 2000ms for devices and 5000ms for desktops. The default lock timeout can be increased in the connection string using the ssce: default lock timeout property.   Let's assume I have Component (say Graph like Yahoo Finance) rendered on the page. Component view template contains bunch of a_hrefs which I wanto to switch period in graph. I created Event and Event handler in Component. I have two questions: How to raise event on Graph Component via those a_hrefs (should they be part of Graph?)? How to redraw Graph without loosing curent page context (section, filter - specified as $_GET values)? • Copying pointers in C++

  Hello, I have a class A containing two pointers to objects of another class B. I want to initialize one pointer or the other depending on which one is passed to init(), which also takes other parameters. My situation is thus the following: class A { public: A(); init(int parameter, int otherParameter, B* toBeInitialized); protected: B* myB; B* myOtherB; }; Now my point is that I want to call init() as: init(640, 480, this->myB); or init(640, 480, this->myOtherB); Now, my init is implemented as: void init( int parameter, int otherParameter, B* toBeInitialized ) { toBeInitialized = someConstructorFunction(parameter, otherParameter); } The problem is that the two pointers are not initialized, I suspect that toBeInitialized is overwritten, but the original parameter is not modified. I am doing something wrong? Should I use references to pointers? Thank you Tommaso

• A simple string array Iteration in C# .NET doesn't work

  This is a simple code that should return true or false after comparing each element in a String array with a Session Variable. The thing is that even when the string array named 'plans' gets the right attributes, inside the foreach it keeps iterating only over the first element, so if the Session Variable matches other element different than the first one in the array it never returns true... You could say the problem is right there in the foreach cicle, but I cant see it... I've done this like a hundred times and I can't understand what am I doing wrong... • Visual C++ 9 Linker file size limitation.

  It appears that the visual C++ 9 linker has a file allocation algorithm that doubles the size of the file every allocation, so you get 512mb, 1024mb, 2048mb, 4096mb. The problem is that it is using a library that cannot handle files larger 2048MB, and as such crashes with an error such as "cannot read file at is the disk full or write protected". Is there a way to bypass this limitation or otherwise replace the linker with something else that works? A bit of background, I have a code generator that generates a large number of files, ~15k cpp files, I've managed to reduce the number of files to something about 6k to get something that at least completes the linking process, I would like to be able to include all 15k without having to create multiple libs.

  I am adding rows dynamically on code behind depending on the Row currently bounded on RowDataBound event. I want that added row to be the same state (Alternate or Normal) of the currently bounded row is this possible? I'm doing something like this but it doesn't follow what I want. I'm expecting the added row dynamically would be the same as the current row.
