  • Should I never put a transactional replication distributor on a subscriber server?

    - by Stuart Branham
What factors into choosing a distribution server for transactional replication? In our topology, we've always had the distributor reside on the publishing server. We rarely generate snapshots and performance is good enough, so this is okay for us today. One of our instances is moving to a cluster, so we need to move the distributor off for resilience/symmetry. Right now our two choices are to use a server physically close to the publishers, or our single subscription server. Our publisher is in our main office, and our subscriber is in a colocation facility off-site which our ISP runs. We have a pretty good line to it. The reason we're even considering the latter is to save work and licensing costs.

  • Release Notes for 6/28/2012

Here are the notes for this week’s release on CodePlex: Improved the diff viewer to take you directly to the first diff when viewing a file’s diff. We decreased the size of all of our form elements to be more in line with the rest of the content of our site. Fixed various issues around interacting with the diff viewer, especially around scrolling and interacting with the splitter. Fixed an issue where non-project members were seeing inapplicable TFS connection instructions when clicking on the source code details of a project. Fixed an issue where searching with the enter key on the advanced issue tracker was not working. Removed the confirmation pop-up when picking SVN as a source control option. Fixed an issue where the bulk editing dialog of issues in Internet Explorer would become unusable if there were values to choose. Fixed an issue where project logos would not show up when browsing under https in FireFox and Chrome. Fixed an issue affecting the formatting of code in pull request code comment notifications. • Release Notes for 7/6/2012

Happy belated 4th of July, everyone! Here are the notes for this week’s release on CodePlex: Implemented performance improvements to Git repositories. Fixed an issue that caused the final “click here” download link to fail in projects that display ads. Fixed an issue for certain projects that made it impossible to edit releases. Fixed an issue where the URL for a diff of a file would not take users to the diff in question. Fixed a rare issue that prevented a small subset of projects from modifying their project details. Fixed an issue where scrollbars were missing in our side-by-side diff viewer. Super- and sub-scripts now work properly in documentation. Addressed several usability issues around the diff viewer. Fixed an issue where the scrollbar could disappear in the advanced issue tracker if a user opens a modal dialog. Have ideas on how to improve CodePlex? Visit our ideas page! • Remotely initiate windows updates

    - by TetraFlash
I have a network with countless workstations on it and the windows updates are done through WSUS in push cycles to allow us to use a generic image and configuration and avoid network congestion. I have a number of workstations in storage that are connected once a month for a few days to recieve updates, however not all of them fall within their push cycle. I want to avoid going to each machine and clicking "check updates" as that would require me to connect a monitor, mouse and keyboard. Is there a way (preferably through powershell but im open minded) to initiate a check and install of updates on a remote system? Lets say for 1 system at a time right now, I can add a file reader and a look later. NOTE: the configuration of the WSUS server is above my pay grade, im simply being asked to ensure these machines are updated. Thanks for any help or hints

Hi I have a Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 running and I need to have a WDS with mixed mode so I can deploy Windows 7 & Windows XP images. I went to setup the first image and after the wizard was done copying the correct files I got: Single Instance Storage Groveler: Service did not start (or something like that). I checked event viewer and got this: Event Type: Error Event Source: Service Control Manager Event Category: None Event ID: 7023 Date: 3/26/2012 Time: 7:03:21 PM User: N/A Computer: SERVER2 Description: The Single Instance Storage Groveler service terminated with the following error: The service has not been started. This server is needed very soon because we just got a shipment of several Windows XP capable laptops and need to deploy Windows XP over PXE and this is keeping us from proceeding. Any help is great!!!

  • Missing Desktop Icon Labels in Windows 7

    - by Buzzedword
Hey guys. Big problem that has been bothering me to no end. My desktop icons have been stripped of their icon labels, and nothing seems to be recovering them. To be clear, when I attempt to rename, the text shows up, and when I view my desktop in an explorer window, all text is preserved. System restore to a stock state will not recover. No changes have been done to the computer-- no installs or downloads for two weeks prior to this error. Rebuilt the icon cache, still no response. Anybody know what can be causing this problem? Screenie below. Thanks in advance. OS: Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit Profile: Local, non-roaming Image: http://img688.imageshack.us/img688/5152/capturemr.png

  • Moving soon, fiancee has new job: how to transition?

    - by Anonymous
I've found myself in a sort of conundrum lately and I figured Stack Overflow would be the place to ask this question. I normally post under my personal account here, but I'm writing in anonymously this time so as to make sure my co-workers don't find out too early that I'll be leaving them behind in a few months. My fiancee just landed a great software development job at a very large, stable company. She'll be starting after she graduates and just after we get married (May to June-ish). Her compensation and benefits package will be more than enough to take care of both of us, so I agreed to step down from my current position so we could move to a larger city with more opportunities. I'll probably take a few weeks off to decompress, but I don't want to stay unemployed very long. Since there will be less pressure on me to bring home a second income though, we're not as adverse to risk as we normally would be. I'm currently debating whether to eventually seek employment at a small company, a larger company, do contract work, or do something else entirely. I haven't been in the software development business long (2-3 years plus some small personal projects), but I've seen what things can be like at a startup (my first job) and at a more established, mid-sized business (my current job). Most importantly what I'm looking for out of a new employment opportunity is challenge and variety. Does this situation describe anyone on SO? If so, what did you do/what are you doing? How is it working out for you? Programming is a pleasure as well as a career skill for me, so I want to make sure it stays that way. Thanks to all in advance for any responses.

  • Pressing zero key brings up lock/switch user screen in W7

    - by qinghua
This issue started after my cat walked all over the keyboard... Whenever I press the "zero" key, the screen goes black and I'm taken to the lock/switch user screen. The other functions of the key work fine - it can produce ) and / like usual. Numlock is off, and as far as I know, my computer doesn't have Function Lock. If I log out of my user account and sign in as a guest, the "zero" works again, but if I create a new user profile, it doesn't work. I get the same issue when I hit "zero" using the on-screen keyboard. My keyboard layout is set to US English. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the ATK package, and updated my keyboard drivers. I have an ASUS U43JC-X1 laptop running Windows 7, and I haven't installed any new programs lately.

  • Is it wrong to not support IE or older browsers? [closed]

    - by XToro
Possible Duplicate: So now Google has said no to old browsers when can the rest of us follow suit? Normally a SO browser but this question doesn't fit there, hopefully it fits here. I just want to ask from web designers' point of view if it's wrong to not care about supporting Internet Explorer or older browsers. The site I'm designing looks great in all browsers except IE9-. There are certain things that IE doesn't support or behave like other browsers; AJAX, JQuery, webkit stuff, some CSS styles, drop-and-drop files from OS etc etc, but it all works great in Safari, FireFox, Chrome etc. Should I be that concerned? I know there are several people that use IE, but it's limitations have just been causing me more work by having to come up with workarounds. From what I've read, many of the issues I've been having should be solved with IE10, but not everybody keeps up to date. I know of several people who are still using IE6! Again, I'm hoping this is the right place to ask a question like this, and if not, please point me to the right stack exchange site instead of just downvoting me. Thanks!

  • HyperV management through Windows 8

    - by Snake
Consider the following setup: 1 Hypervisor 3 Clients (Server 2012 with AD, Server 2012, Windows 8). Now we can remote desktop into the Hypervisor and manage the VMs with the manager. This also works from the Server 2012 (I installed the manager there). But it doesn't work from the Windows 8 machine. All machines are in the same domain. Am I forgetting something? I followed this long page http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc794756(v=ws.10).aspx But I find it so weird that it works for the same user on Windows Server 2012, but not on Windows 8.

  • How to stop windows from adding additional keyboards to languages

    - by MMavipc
I have the English language setup with the normal en-us layout, and only this layout. I have the Spanish language setup with united states - international layout. When I switch to English it gives me the option to select the regular keyboard or the international version. Only the regular version is listed under EN in my language settings. How do I get it to remove the international keyboard from English? Sometimes it switches to international while I'm on English mode and screws up my typing, which is a pain in the ass.

  • What is the correct way to code incoming links for SEO?

    - by DC01
Our site is giving out 'badges' to our authors. They can post these on their personal blogs and they will serve as incoming links to our site. We want to give out the best possible code for SEO without doing anything that would get us flagged. I would like to know what you're thoughts are on the following snippet of code and if anyone has any DEFINITE advice on dos and donts with it. Also, let me know if any of it is redundant or not worth it for SEO purposes. I've kept the css inline since some of the writers would not have access to add link to external CSS. I've changed the real values, but title, alt etc would be descriptive keywords similar to our page titles etc (no overloading keywords or any of that) <div id="writer" style="width:100px;height:50px;> <h1><strong style="float:left;text-indent:-9999px;overflow:hidden;margin:0;padding:0;">articles on x,y,z</strong> <a href="http://www.site.com/link-to-author" title="site description"> <img style="border:none" src="http://www.site.com/images/badge.png" alt="description of articles" title="View my published work on site.com"/> </a> </h1></div>

  • Setup non-MS email (gmail) in Windows 8 Mail app

    - by CoolUserName
All documentation I have found online seems to apply to an older or different version of Windows 8. I am using the 90 evaluation copy of Windows 8 Enterprise (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/jj554510.aspx). Is it disabled because it is enterprise edition? Basically, I can start the mail app, bring up the settings (windows+i), but all I am given for options are Permissions and Rate and Review. In other documentation I've seen this is where you add an account. Is this possible? If this is a restriction to Windows 8 Enterprise, is there a trial version of normal Home editions somewhere?

  • When NOT to use virtualisation? [closed]

    - by Nils
When virtualisation was new, we tried to virtualized everything. Then came the cases where the virtual machine was very much slower than a physical one. It boils down to the following ruleset (with us) when not to virtualize: Network-io-intesive applications (i.e. with many interrupts/packets) Disk-io-intensive (if not on SAN storage) RAM-intensive (this is the most precious resource) Now this is true for a combination of XEN using local DRBD storage. The same seems to be true for Hyper-V using DAS. I wonder - is it true for all combinations - and what are your limits on these combinations?

  • remove "items 1-9 of X" from google result

    - by OSdave
the results of my Magento based website's categories includes "items 1 - 9 of X" before the actual description of the category. How can I get rid of this? In this snapshot, what I want to delete is the red rectangle edits: @Su, these are the reason: Having text like (Items 1 - 9 of 144 –) appear in a Google listing uses up the 25 word limit that Google allows us. More importantly, the first few words of the description can persuade or dissuade someone from visiting my site. This text will not positively influence people to visit my site. @DisgruntledGoat this information shows up in the source code of that page, like this: <table class="toolbar" border="0"> <tr> <td class="pager" style="width: 414px;"> <table class="pager" cellspacing="0"> <tr> <td>Items 1 to 9 of 144 total</td> </tr> </table> </td> </tr> </table>

  • Hardware needed for 2000 users? [closed]

    - by Trcx
I have school assignment that is fairly well defined, requiring us to come up with a plan for an environment serving dynamic web applications to 2000 users, and should be able to scale up to six thousand. I have done plenty of research as far as load balancing, redundancy, UPSs, etc, but am having a hard time figuring out how much hardware is actually needed in the way of physical servers, ram, processing power, etc. The assignment states that the server will have a lot of dynamic code, email, and a database are required, all utilizing the appropriate microsoft service (MS SQL, Exchange, IIS). I already plan on splitting them out on to separate servers, but can't even fathom the hardware requirements of something that large scale. Could someone with experience weight in on this, or point me two some good articles?

  • [LINQ] Master&ndash;Detail Same Record (I)

    - by JTorrecilla
PROBLEM Firstly, I am working on a project based on LINQ, EF, and C# with VS2010. The following Table shows what I have and what I want to show. Header C1 C2 C3 1 P1 01/01/2011 2 P2 01/02/2011 Details 1 1 D1 2 1 D2 3 1 D3 4 2 D1 5 2 D4 Expected Results 1 P1 01/01/2011 D1, D2, D3 2 P2 01/02/2011 D1,D4   IDEAS At the begin I got 3 possible ways: - Doing inside the DB:  It could be achieved from DB with a CURSOR in a Stored Procedure. - Doing from .NET with LOOPS. - Doing with LINQ (I love it!!) FIRST APROX Example with a simple CLASS with a LIST: With and Employee Class that acts as Header Table: 1: public class Employee 2: { 3: public Employee () { } 4: public Int32 ID { get; set; } 5: public String FirstName{ get; set; } 6: public String LastName{ get; set; } 7: public List<string> Numbers{ get; set; } // Acts as Details Table 8: } We can show all numbers contained by Employee: 1: List<Employee > listado = new List<Employee >(); 2: //Fill Listado 3: var query= from Employee em in listado 4: let Nums= string.Join(";", em.Numbers) 5: select new { 6: em.Name, 7: Nums 8: }; The “LET” operator allows us to host the results of “Join” of the Numbers List of the Employee Class. A little example. ASAP I will post the second part to achieve the same with Entity Framework. Best Regards

  • Can time skew on Windows be reduced to +/- 5ms?

    - by mbac32768
A number of our Windows workstations, running ntpd, simply cannot keep time. Our Linux workstations and servers running the same ntpd config don't have this problem, they can stay within +/- 5ms of skew. The Windows hosts easily drift to seconds and sometimes minutes apart. This is a problem for us. The only common factor we have been able to isolate is that the hosts that can't keep time are running Windows. Is there something fundamentally impossible with what we're trying to do?

  • Can an Employer turn you down if you have said the fact about current work culture being bad [closed]

    - by MansonRix
I had recently an interview where I scored good in 1st two round of technical interview . Then in the 3rd round was the managerial round where the guy started about my experience and whether I have vaptured any requirement and handled and trained any teams. This went pretty well for around 50 mins . Then there was the awkward question , Interviewer: why amI looking for a change? Me: coz I want to explore my carrier options? Interviewer: But your current company is big enough and you can explore options over there? (This was supposedly the trap) Me: Apart from that I am missing the flexibilty of working with Us and Europe based company as my current company is not that flexible. Interviewer: What exactly you don't find flexible. Me: The login time . Even if you get late by 1sec you might have to explin. Though this is not a big problem , still I will prefer flexibilty as we are working really hard. Interviewer: Allright ( Then couple of more questions) , Hope to C U Ya , that's pretty much it . Now I called up HR and they say , they are yet to get the feedback from Interviewer. Did I screw it? I mean does some one really have to pretend always by saying positive things about company and manager though not saying negative things?
