• Problems with tk85.dll when shutting down an application that embeds the Python interpreter.

  My C++ application embeds the Python interpreter, but seems to be having some trouble when it shuts down. Right after the main window closes, I get a segmentation fault (this is Windows, but we'll call it a segmentation fault anyway). • ClickOnce and mageUI adding custom file folder problems

  What I do: Publishing .Net 3.5 application via VS, or msbuild (whatever), and now I need to insert to the published application separate directory (Modules - not added as a reference to the project - our project architecture does not allow this). So I'm copying the folder to published location then runs mageUI.exe select the application manifest and then the problems starts. As I press the populate button it's adding also hidden directory? So I remove the directory, after I want to save the manifest file I get the "Warning MSB3110: Assembly 'NAME.Shell.application.deploy' has mismatched identity 'NAME.Shell.application', expected file name: 'NAME.Shell.application.application'". Did you have the same problems, according to http://smartclient.codeplex.com/Project/Download/FileDownload.aspx?DownloadId=5060 it should be easy as 1-2-3 but it's not.

• How to configure a session timeout for Grails application?

  In one of controllers in my Grails application I'm preserving a parameter value in a session variable like this: session.myVariable = params.myValue After that, I can access the saved value from different controllers/GSP-pages as long as I actively use the app. However, if I don't use my app for a while, even though my browser window is still open, the session variable looses it's value. Does this happens because the session expires? I was under impression that a session lives until the browser window is still open, but apparently I was wrong. What should I do to ensure all session variables I define in my Grails app don't expire until the browser is closed? Is there any way to set session timeout manually?   Hi all, For my VFP application, i have a program to check currently who is accessing the server (by using sp_who2), also another progam to check who is currently locking which table. But i wish to know which options my users is accessing at the moment. Am thinking if i can write a SP to get the current connected process ID for a specific client, and insert to a table(ActLog) in SQL with the program name pass into this table during users load the program. And delete that particular record when user unload the program. Then from the ActLog, i can know who is currently accessing to which program. At the moment, i wish to know if i able to get the client process ID? rgds/Andrea

• MySql timeouts - Should I set autoReconnect=true in Spring application?

  After periods of inactivity on my website (Using Spring 2.5 and MySql), I get the following error: org.springframework.dao.RecoverableDataAccessException: The last packet sent successfully to the server was 52,847,830 milliseconds ago. is longer than the server configured value of 'wait_timeout'. You should consider either expiring and/or testing connection validity before use in your application, increasing the server configured values for client timeouts, or using the Connector/J connection property 'autoReconnect=true' to avoid this problem. According to this question, and the linked bug, I shouldn't just set autoReconnect=true. Does this mean I have to catch this exception on any queries I do and then retry the transaction? Should that logic be in the data access layer, or the model layer? Is there an easy way to handle this instead of wrapping every single query to catch this?

• Why do users have to enter a 7-digit twitter PIN to grant my application access?

  I am implementing some ruby on rails code tweet stuff for my users. I am creating the proper oauth link...something like http://twitter.com/oauth/authorize?oauth_token=y2RkuftYAEkbEuIF7zKMuzWN30O2XxM8U9j0egtzKv But after my test account grants access to twitter, it pulls up a page saying "You've successfully granted access to . Simply return to and enter the following PIN to complete the process. 1234567" I have no idea where the user should enter this PIN and why they have to do that. I don't think this should be a necessary step. Twitter should be redirecting the user to the callback URL I provided in the application settings. Does anyone know why this is happening? UPDATE I found this article that states I need to send my users to this URL (note "authenticate" instead of "authorize"): http://twitter.com/oauth/authenticate?oauth_token=y2RkuftYAEkbEuIF7zKMuzWN30O2XxM8U9j0egtzKv I made the change but Twitter redirects the user to the authorize path after he clicks "Allow" which then gives him the 7 digit PIN again!

• Trouble with onscreen keyboard orientation in iPhone OpenGL ES application.

  I need to take keyboard input in my OpenGL ES application, so I just created an empty UITextView and added it as a subview to the main window along with the view that presents my content. I use the UITextview to control the keyboard and it works fine in a single orientation. I then changed my code to support all orientations by rotating the OpenGL content myself based on UIDeviceOrientation notifications. To rotate the keyboard, I overrode the shouldAutoRotateInterfaceOrientation method in the UITextView's controller. But I still see that the keyboard does not rotate according to the orientation. Any clues?

• Problem sending mail with simple .net application. Server refusal error.

  I have a very simple .net application for testing SMTP on .net. But i am receiving this weird error. "System.Net.Mail.SmtpException: Failure sending mail. --- System.Net.WebException: Unable to connect to the remote server --- System.Net.Sockets.SocketException: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it" SMTP server is remote and doesn't need any kind of authentication so i don't need credentials. But i can send mails from this computer with outlook using same smtp server and same smtp settings without any problem. Any ideas? It will be appreciated so much. • Using a DataSet instead of custom business entities in soa and n-tier architecture

  I’m working on a large and a high volume transactional enterprise application which has been designed using n-tire application architecture .And it was developed in the .NET platform utilizing C#,VB.NEt, Framework 3.5, ObjectDataSources, DataSet, WCF, asp.net update panel, JavaScript ,JSON, 3rd Party tools. The application is supposed to accomplish a really scalable / easily maintained / robust application / integrations, and to make sure that my services are created using a format that can be understood by other systems. The problem is, this application is about 70% complete but now I was wondering if the following would cause us future issues, I’m using a DataSet and a DataTable to (get /set) the data (form /to) the stored procedure in the database using the ObjectDataSources and was wondering if this would prevent my application from achieving the above goals. Actually, I am not anti-OO. I write lots of classes for different purposes, but I didn’t use the entity objects(custom business entities) instead of the previous way because I have a large database that may contain 50 tables and I was just afraid to create entities for each table and then in the future if I need to change the schema of the database, it might cause a huge affect on the application ?

  There are many security reasons why one would want to drop an HTTP connection with no response (eg. OWASP's SSL best practices). When these can be detected at the server level then it's no big deal. However, what if you can only detect this condition at the application level? Does Rails, or more generally Rack, have any standard way of telling the server to drop the connection without a response? If not, are there some standard headers to pass in that will accomplish that in common web servers (I'm thinking Nginx or Apache)? Even if there is not a standard header is there a reasonable way to configure that behavior? Is this a fool's errand?

I have server appliaction on may computer(Win Form application) and client applucation as web site(Silverlight application). I use policy server which open port 943. Everything works fine on this application. But now I need to write another client-server application. Server for that application olso use port 943 for policy connection. When I try to run this 2 server applications on the same compyeter an excepten is thrown which says that only one application can work on port 943. How can I solve this problem? Thanks.

  I have a 3rd party DLL that I am trying to use in a win32 C++ application. The DLL alone is all that I have. I believe this library is written in C and I assume is not exposed to COM. Is LoadLibrary() the function must commonly used for this task in Windows? If so can someone provide me with an example of how it is used? I created a blank win32 in VS so I don't have any of the windows specific headers included etc. Thanks!

  When I try to change the ASP.NET version to v4 on IIS 6, I receive the following warning: Changing the Framework version requires a restart of the W3SVC service. Alternatively, you can change the Framework version without restarting the W3SVC service by running: aspnet_regiis.exe -norestart -s IIS-Viirtual-Path Do you want to continue (this will change the Framework version and restart the W3SVC service)? How do I work out IIS-Virtual-Path? I have tried the obvious paths i.e.: aspnet_regiis.exe -norestart -s "/WebSites/Extranet/AppName" Where WebSites is the name of the folder in IIS, Extranet the name of the root app and AppName the name of the Virtual Directory application I am trying to change. Thanks!   I have a survey application, where users can create surveys and give choices for every survey. Other users can choose their answers for the aurvey and then polls are taken to get the results of the survey. I already have the database schema for this Questions id, user_id, category_id, question_text, date_started Answers id, user_id, question_id, choice_id, explanation, date_added Choices id, question_id, choice_text As for now, users can choose their own choice answers to their surveys... but I want to be able to add a default "I dont care" or "I dont know" choice to every survey for people who simply dont care about the topic to take sides or who cant choose. So lets say theres a survey that asks who was a better president, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagon, or Richard Nixon... I want to be able to add a default "I dont care" option. I was thinking to just add that extra choice EVERY TIME a user creates a survey, but then I wouldn't have much control over the text for that choice after that survey has been created, and I want to know if theres a better way to do this, like create another table or something Thanks

  I downloaded the Web Deployment Project plug-in for Visual Studio 2005. I installed it. I have a project that I am working on that is a Web Application Project. The Add Web Deployment Project Build menu selection is not in the Build Menu or Solution Explorer. If I create a raw test Web Site Project, the menu item magically appears. Is this by design or am I missing something. Also, I am completely up to date on all the VS 2005 updates.

• ASP.Net 2.0 Web application cannot find specified module.

  Recently my ASP.NET application quit working. It is local to my machine. It quit working after installing and uninstalling some third party developer tools. (I believe) I emptied out my directory and started adding modules until I narrowed it down to a managed C++ dll. When I load the dll into Dependency Walker it says that "c:\windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft.vc80.debugcrt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.762_x-ww_5490cd9f\MSVCM80D.DLL" loads fine, but "MSVCR80D.DLL" could not be found. However this dll exists in the same directory. The managed dll contains an embedded manifest and I am using Visual Studio 2005 service pack 1.

Presumably, that should make them available on the classpath when I select the java module that contains "main" and do a "run as" application. What's the problem? I suspect it may be related to 64-bit vs 32-bit VMs....

  We have a Web Role that we are hosting in Windows Azure that uses an old ASMX based Web Reference to contact an external system. The Web Reference proxy code is big enough that instantiating it the first time has a significant cost. We'd like to be able to have this run when the Web Role starts instead of on the first request. I know IIS 7.5 has an Application Warm-Up module that would allow us to achieve this, but I'm having trouble figuring out if something similar exists with hosting on Windows Azure. Thanks, Corey

  AFAIK, ngen turns MSIL into native code (also reffered to as pre-JIT), however I never payed too much attention at it's startup performance impact. Ngen'd applications still require the .NET base class libraries (the runtime). Since the base class libraries have everything our .NET assemblies need (correct?) would it be possible to ship the framework's DLLs with my ngen'd application so that it does not require the runtime to be installed? (e.g., the scenario for most Windows XP machines) Oh, and please don't bother mentioning Remotesoft's Salamander Linker or Xenocode's Postbuild. They are not for my (and many's) current budget (and they seem to simply bundle the framework in a virtualized enviroinment, which means big download sizes and slow startup times I believe)

  I have a need to store files on Amazon AWS S3, but in order to isolate the user from the AWS authentication I want to go via an ASP page on my site, which the user will be logged into. So: The application sends the file using the Delphi Indy library TidHTTP.Put (FileStream) routine to the ASP page, along with some authentication stuff (mine, not AWS) on the querystring. The ASP page checks the auth details and then if OK stores the file on S3 using my Amazon account. Problem I have is: how do I access the data coming in from the Indy PUT using JScript in the ASP page and pass it on to S3. I'm OK with AWS signing, etc, it's just the nuts and bolts of connecting the two bits (the incoming request and the outgoing AWS request) ... TIA R

  I have got a monitor with multitouch overlay on top of it. It works fine with Windows 7 but I want to write a multitouch application in C# for Windows XP which doesn't support touch feature out of the box. There is no documentation whatsoever and I emailed the manufacturer but never got a reply. However the device works with Google Earth, which doesn't natively support multitouch, on Windows XP. So I think it generates many types of messages together i.e. WM_TOUCH for Windows 7, one for Google Earth COM API, and probably its own messages either in UDP or Windows message form. How can I trap all communications and learn the protocol?

  I have an .Net 3.5 based web service running at http://localhost/serivce.svc/. Then I have a Asp.Net application running at http://localhost/myApp. In Application_Load my App reads some XML configuration from the web service. That works fine on my machine, but: On Vista with IIS7 the request to the web services fails. The web service can be accessed via the browser without any problem. I configured the app pool of my App to run as admin. I added the admin to the IIS_USRS group, but it still cannot access the web service. impersonate=true/false seems not to make a difference.

  Here's my context: I am writing a WPF add-in for an application. This Application's main thread is unmanaged. I want to add a global exception handling system for this add-in to handle any unhandled exceptions. Here's what I've tried but not working: I cannot add a try-catch block to my Application.Run() code line. Because I am an add-in, that code fragment is in the application. System.Windows.Forms.Application.ThreadException is not working too. There might not be an WinForm Application exists. (WPF hosting in unmanaged code.) AppDomain.CurrentDomain.UnhandledException is not working too. Because maybe it's handled by the Application itself. It just doesn't enter my code. So, any ideas for this situation?

• Monitoring process-level performance counters in Windows Perfmon

  I am sure everybody has bumped into this. As you scale a web server that uses multiple application pools, it's valuable to collect performance counters for each application pool 24x7. The only problem is - Perfmon links counters to application pools by process ID, so whenever an application pool recycles you have to remove the counters for the old process ID and add them for the new process ID. Since application pools recycle quite often (whenever you release a new version or patch the server), it's a major pain. I wonder if anybody has found a workaround for this? Perhaps a programmatic way to update Perfmon settings whenever an application pool starts up or some way to reference application pools by name instead of process ID? I'll appreciate any hints on this!
