  • 'schema' design for a social network

    I'm working on a proof of concept app for a twitter style social network with about 500k users. I'm unsure of how best to design the 'schema' should I embed a user's subscriptions or have a separate 'subscriptions' collection and use db references? If I embed, I still have to perform a query to get all of a user's followers. e.g. Given the following user: { "username" : "alan", "photo": "123.jpg", "subscriptions" : [ {"username" : "john", "status" : "accepted"}, {"username" : "paul", "status" : "pending"} ] } to find all of alan's subscribers, I'd have to run something like this: db.users.find({'subscriptions.username' : 'alan'}); from a performance point of view, is that any worse or better than having a separate subscriptions collection? also, when displaying a list of subscriptions/subscribers, I am currently having problems with n+1 because the subscription document tells me the username of the target user but not other attributes I may need such as the profile photo. Are there any recommended practices for such situations? thanks Alan

    I was recently wondering how http://500px.com calculates their "Pulse" rating. The "Pulse" is a score from 1..100 based on the popularity of the photo. I think it might use some of the following criteria: Number of likes Number of "favorites" Number of comments Total views maybe the time since the photo has been uploaded maybe some other non-obvious criteria like the users follower count, user rank, camera model or similar How would I achieve some sort of algorithm like this? Any advice on how to implement an algorithm with this criteria (and maybe some code) would be appreciated too.

  • How to use two templates for ListViewItem using WPF

    Hi, I would like to have a ListView that would have have items similar to Microsoft Outlook inbox with items arranged by Conversations (see the attached photo). An item can either be a simple textblock containing the topic of the conversation (on the photo this are the blue lines) or it can contain email information specified by the ListView's header. It would be best if the items with conversation topics would be push buttons so that emails inside that conversation could be shown or hidden by pressing this button. Any ideas how can I achieve this? Do I specify two ListViewItem templates? If yes, how do I tell in the code which template to use for each item? Any help will be GREATLY appreciated!!     I have a form that lets users upload a photo of themselves. This seems to work. The photo does exist on the server once uploaded. When I try to access the file I get a "403 forbidden - you don't have permission to access this url on this sever" and also I get "Additionally, a 410 Gone error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request."     hello, searching a photo by dominant colors using mysql is quite simple. assuming that the r,g,b values of the most dominant colors of the photo is already stored in the database, this could be achieved for example by something like: SELECT * FROM colors WHERE ABS(dominant_r - :r) < :threshold AND ABS(dominant_g - :g) < :threshold AND ABS(dominant_b - :b) < :threshold i wonder, if it's anyhow possible to store the colors in sphinx and perform the querying using the sphinx search engine? thanks!

  • Change UIImagePicker Navigation Bar style to blue

    All of my view has a blue navigation bar but when I want user to choose a photo, the UIImagePicker is black. I tried to set the navigation bar of UIImagePickerController to blue using UIBarStyleDefault but it does not work for me, the color is still black. I tried with other UIBarStyle like UIBarStyleBlack and UIBarStyleOpaque as well but it doesn't change the navigation bar of the picker anyway. Here is my code // Let the user choose a new photo.     hi, I am developing an iPhone app that resizes and merges images. I want to select two photos of size 1600x1200 from photo library and then merge both into a single image and save that new image back to the photo library. However, I can't get the right size for the merged image. I take two image views of frame 320x480 and set the view's image to my imported images. After manipulating the images (zooming, cropping, rotating), I then save the image to album. When I check the image size it shows 600x800. How do I get the original size of 1600*1200? I've been stuck on this problem from two weeks! Thanks in advance.

    I have an user control. I add dynamicly control to this control on its Page Init. This user control's parent Page's every postback, its page init works fine. After I added an different user control to Page. In Second User control, user select photos and uploads them with asyncfileupload control(AJAX). And I save all of them with a button at the end of Page. In EveryPostBack Parent Page Load event works. If I dont select any photo from Second User Control, First User Control's Page Init event works fine when I click Save Button. But if I select a photo, first User Control dont work. What is the problem?

    I'm implementing an IFilter for indexing image formats. One problem is photos - many users have tons of photos, photos are huge and loading and searching for text on them is time consuming. Yes, sometimes people use cameras instead of scanners for digitizing documents, but the potential problems IMO far outweight the possibility of encountering a document digitized with a photo camera. So my implementation will not extract text from photos at all. What should the IFilter do once it detects that a given file is a photo image - indicate an error or return empty text?

  • Does Flickr "Know" if a Hotlinked Image Does Not Link Back to Source?

    From Flickr's community guidelines: "Do link back to Flickr when you post your photos elsewhere. The Flickr service makes it possible to post images hosted on Flickr to outside web sites. However, pages on other web sites that display images hosted on flickr.com must provide a link from each photo back to its photo page on Flickr." Our company currently allows image hotlinking for user-uploaded images. It turns out that this has been more popular than we had expected, and I would like to capitalize on this if possible. We will be altering the guidelines to include a clause similar to Flickr's, quoted above. As hotlinking costs us, both in terms of server load and bandwidth, we would like to get at least something out of it, other than merely a warm feeling inside. My question: Does Flickr "know" if a hotlinked image does not link back to its source? Bonus: if Flickr knows, how?

    hi, I am using a WebBrowser to render some HTML text. The WebBrowser is located within a rich client. I can detect the window's orientation when the rich client is launched. How do I make the text rendered within the WebBrowser to be dispayed in RTL order. I have tried body.setDir("rtl"), but it only aligned all the text in the WebBrowser to the right. It does not really reverse the content. For example, I have a photo that is displayed on the left and then a segment of text displayed on the right. After calling body.setDir("rtl"), it only aligned everything to the right in the WebBrowser, but it did not move the photo to the right, and it did not move the text to the left. Thanks a lot!

    I am creating a Domino Document via AJAX that contains a photo. I am able to get the base64 image data back to the server in a Notes Domino Document. Data is stored in a Richtext (textarea) field as "data:image/jpeg;base64,/9j/4AAQSkZJRgABAQAAAQABAAD/2wBDAFA..........." - (this goes on for several lines) I am trying to display on the Domino Webpage using passthru tag <<image id= "pic1" >> in the onLoad event of the Form i try to shove the data into the image element using this code: //Photo Stuff alert(document.forms[0].photo1.value); document.getElementById("pic1").src = document.forms[0].photo1.value; The alert is showing the data.   • Using setSourceType with image picker up hides status bar

    I am pretty sure this is a bug but I thought I would check. I used the camera overlay to add a button so that on the iphone a user can switch from the camera view to the photo library. When button is taped the source type switches fine but the status bar is missing from the photo library. Throughout the rest of that session the status bar remains missing from all views evet thougth isStatusBarHidden reports NO. This is how the camera overlay view is created if (cameraOverlayView == nil) { [[NSBundle mainBundle] loadNibNamed:@"CameraOverlayView" owner:self options:nil]; } If camera is available this is when I set source type and add overlay if ([UIImagePickerController isSourceTypeAvailable:UIImagePickerControllerSourceTypeCamera]) { [imagePicker setSourceType:UIImagePickerControllerSourceTypeCamera]; [imagePicker setCameraOverlayView:cameraOverlayView]; } Here is the action statement to change source type. (IBAction)selectImage; { [imagePicker setSourceType:UIImagePickerControllerSourceTypePhotoLibrary]; } If I don't tap the button on the overlay there is no problem with the status bar. PS. I did submit a bug report on this.

    I have a person object. class Person { private $name; ... } I need to be able to change how they are displayed on the front-end ( visitors have control ). They can choose list view, grid view, photo view for example. class PersonDisplay { public function displayList() { // Query database // Output html to display in list mode } public function displayPhoto() { // Query database // Output html to display in photo mode } } Is this an acceptable way to handle the presentation of the items on the front-end or is there a specific design pattern I should be researching to help me with this task? Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas where this could go wrong or if this could potentially make maintenance a nightmare? The Person object was just an example very similiar to what I am using.

    Hi, I am using Uploadify on one of my client's web sites to allow them to upload a large amount of pictures at once to their photo gallery. I am seeing issues lately. They seem to upload large photographs (3 MB and above). I am wondering, is it possible to compress (reduce their size) on the client side, instead of doing it on the server (just like facebook does it). I know I could easily do it on the server, but I am working on another project right now, where I am expecting a large flow of photo uploads. It would require significant amount of CPU time to process them all. So I thought, I'd ask about the client side processing. Thanks.

  • UIActivityViewController 101

    I'm starting to get familiar with the new iOS 6 way to share: UIActivityViewController (the same as when you share a photo from the native iOS photo app), but I'm experiencing a few problems. First, when I choose to share via email, I can't find a way to set the subject of the email. Second, when I post on twitter, I can't find how to post a URL (except explicitly writing it in a NSString). Before, on iOS 5, I was using MFMailComposeViewController for Mail and SLComposeViewController for Twitter. It worked well. If there's no way to choose the subject with UIActivityViewController, could there be a way that I put my own custom buttons on the ActivityViewController, buttons that will call MFMailComposeViewController and SLComposeViewController when touched? I'm just speculating here. Thanks!
