  • Restoring Windows 2008 Server X86 and X64

    Restoring Windows 2008 Server (Domain Controller) We are using Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 to Image our DC. Now this software has a feature to convert the backup into a vmware or hyper-v VM I have also used disk2vhd to convert one of our dc's to a vhd and when I connected it into Hyper-V, it booted fine, I can login - BUT :-) As soon as I login, I get the activation error, that change product key, this product key isn't good for this machine etc. Question is : When in a real recovery situation, what would be the procedure to restore it either virtual or onto a physical box but be able to login and change product key etc ? In this scenario its just locked down and I cant' do anything, if this is the case, how would I replicate my production environment via these tools ? Any Ideas ? Will be grateful for some real world examples here. Same thing happens with our exchange backup / test restore either physical or virtual, can login but nothing else. Now we don't have the keys as they are OEM keys and just wondering what will happen in a real scenario, would we be purchasing another KEY or using the OEM key on our new server ? This is a test environment I am trying to create by restoring our backups either into hyper-v or physical test machines. Also, If I build up a machine (Server 2008) in a VM (Hyper-V), How can I restore just the system state backup of my DC into it ? will that give me the activation error too ? even though I would use the TRIAL ISOs provided by Microsoft ?   • Virtual Windows 2008 Server Activation with ESX

    I had a decommissioned server (Dell PE2950) that we could still use, it had OEM Windows 2003 Std on it but wanted to use it as a new host with VMware ESX5 to put a couple legacy severs on it. I wiped it clean and maxed out the memory. But when I added the memory I noticed the product key sticker was a "WindowsServer08 Std 1-4cpu" product key, and it also had a Virtual Key. Not sure why it had Win2003 and not Win2008 from the start, but I would like to use that license if I can. The virtual host would stay on the same physical server, so there shouldn't be a problem with licensing... but I do not want to use Hyper-V unless I can not help it. I have installed ESX5 on the server, but I cannot get the Windows 2008 server to activate. The product key is hard to read, and I have checked the key quite a few times. But my question is... Is it because Hyper-V was not installed on the host? But I thought you could use the product key alone on a virtual host? Maybe because I am not using a Dell Windows 2008 disk but iso from MS directly via the Volumne Licensing site? EDIT: well, Im pretty sure I got the product key correct. If its not the product key, could the activation problem be because Im not using hyper-v or maybe the correct install dvd? EDIT2: maybe because I added 28GB of memory? Originally 4GB...

    Hello I have just installed Windows 2008 web server to have a development/test site on my office. In the test network I only have 2 machines: Windows server 2008 Web Edition Vista x64 client machine with Visual Studio The client and the server are networked using a NETGEAR router. I have enabled Remote desktop on the server and when I try to connect to it within the Vista client I get the credential window as in the following screenshot. But even if I write the correct credentials I am not able to remote login on the server. Where am I doing wrong? Update 1 I have even tried to create a folder share on the server. But I am not able to access it for the same reason. User or password invalid it says. But this is impossible as I am logging in the server with the same credentials. Update 2 If I try to browse the network from the RDP client I receive a message saying that there are no server running Terminal Services in my network.... :O

    I have 2008 r2 64bit server that is stuck on installing updates. It shows message "Please do not power off or unplug your machine. Installing 57 of 61.." This message is shown for 3 hours now. I was trying to connect to this server using mmc. runas /user:AdministratorAccountName@ComputerName "mmc %windir%\system32\compmgmt.msc" RUNAS ERROR: Unable to run - mmc C:\Windows\system32\compmgmt.msc 1311: There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request. What else can I do? Update: Remote Desktop does not work. It just disappear after entering username and password from Win7-64 computer Update: I have disconected server.     Issue: Double logins when connecting to RemoteApps or Remote Desktop Environment: Gateway = 1 server 2008 R2 - Roles = Gateway, Session Broker, Connection Mgr, Session Host Configuration server Session hosts = 2 servers 2008 R2 - Roles = App Manager and Session host configuration Testing: I can get to the url http://RDS.domain.com/rdweb - I get prompted for authentication (1) Pass authentication, get list of remote apps. Click on remoteapps or remote desktop, get prompted for authentication again (2). Pass authentication, I get access to app or RDP. Done so far. On session host Signed rdp files with cert. Added the following to the custom RDP settings: Authenticaton level:i:0 = If server authentication fails, connect to the computer without warning (Connect and don’t warn me). prompt for credentials on client:i:1 = RDC will prompt for credentials when connecting to a server that does not support server authentication. enablecredsspsupport:i:1 = RDP will use CredSSP, if the operating system supports CredSSP. Edited the javascript file as found in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/977507 Added Connection ID, and added Web Access server to TS Web Access Computers group on the Session host servers, and Signed apps as found in hxxp://blogs.msdn.com/b/rds/archive/2009/08/11/introducing-web-single-sign-on-for-remoteapp-and-desktop-connections.aspx Note: This double login happens internally and externally.

  • "Network Error - 53" while trying to mount NFS share in Windows Server 2008 client

    CentOS | Windows 2008 I've got a CentOS 5.5 server running nfsd. On the Windows side, I'm running Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise. I have the "Files Services" server role enabled and both Client for NFS and Server for NFS are on. I'm able to successfully connect/mount to the CentOS NFS share from other linux systems but am experiencing errors connecting to it from Windows. When I try to connect, I get the following: C:\Users\fooadmin>mount -o anon 10.10.10.10:/share/ z: Network Error - 53 Type 'NET HELPMSG 53' for more information. (IP and share name have been changed to protect the innocent :-) ) Additional information: I've verified low-level network connectivity between the Windows client and the NFS server with telnet (to the NFS on TCP/2049) so I know the port is open. I've further confirmed that inbound and outbound firewall ports are present and enabled. I came across a Microsoft tech note that suggested changing the "Provider Order" so "NFS Network" is above other items like Microsoft Windows Network. I changed this and restarted the NFS client - no luck. I've confirmed that the share folder on the NFS server is readable/writable by all (777) I've tried other variations of the mount command like: mount 10.10.10.10:/share/ z: and mount 10.10.10.10:/share z: and mount -o anon mtype=hard \\10.10.10.10:/share * No luck. As per the command output, I tried typing NET HELPMSG 53 but that doesn't tell me much. Just "The network path was not found". I'm lost on how to proceed with troubleshooting. Any ideas?

  • New SBS 2011 installation (not migration) in an existing 2008 R2 domain

    My current network setup has two servers: a Windows 2008 R2 with TMG 2010 as edge firewall (TMG server), a second 2008 R2 with DC, DNS and Hyper-V roles (DCDNS server). I was trying to install SBS 2011 as a child partition on DCDNS, first I installed SBS 2011 in English and did the migration successfully. However, later on, I found that I can't change the display language in SBS 2011 once it's installed (but the clients require a different language), so I had to re-install the SBS in a different language. It is during the re-installation that the problem came up: the migration can't be completed with some error message stating "can't access the source server". I re-ran the migration preparation tool, but it didn't make any difference. I wonder if it's because the source server can only be "migrated" once. Since I only need to setup a handful of users and computers, so I decided to do a new install of SBS and picked a different domain name. But I can't get the SBS to connect to LAN: it can't ping other servers, neither can other servers ping the SBS server. I've tried to stop the DC/DNS services on DCDNS and restart SBS, but with no difference. Anyone has idea how to fix this problem?

  • Interesting phenomenom with Windows Server 2008 R2 user access controls and NTFS ACLs

    One to try, and I'd appreciate any thoughts on this. On a Windows Server 2008 R2 box (or presumably 2008 R1, Windows Vista or Windows 7): i) Logon as an administrator, and create a new NTFS volume ii) Blow away the standard MS ACLS on the root of the volume (which are laughable), and replace with Administrators:Full Control, System:Full Control, e.g.: echo Y|cacls.exe d:\ /g "Administrators:F" "SYSTEM:F" iii) Now, from a Command Prompt shell window or PowerShell window, switch to that drive (cd /d D:\ or set-location D:\ ). Works fine... no issues. iv) Now, try to browse to the root of the new volume using MS Explorer... Access denied. Now, I've kind of convinced myself that it is UAC getting in the way, as you can add "Authenticated Users:List" access to D:\ and Explorer then works. I can only assume that MS Explorer isn't able to use the "admin" token for the Administrator. Browsing to explorer.exe and doing a "Run as administrator" has no effect. Any thoughts?   • Windows Server 2008 - RAID 5 Fails on Reboot

    Hey, I've got an install of Windows Server 2008 Enterprise. It's running software RAID-5 with five disks. The disks were originally formatted under Windows Server 2003, but came up fine once I installed Windows Server 2008. The issue I'm having is that every time I reboot the server, the RAID comes up with a "Failed Redundancy" - the data stays available. I have 4 disks on a PCI SATA controller, and one of the disks connected to the motherboard's on-board SATA ports. (The other on-board port has the system disk connected.) I was having Disk #4 fail consistently, so I tried swapping the cables on the controller end. I swapped the on-board RAID disk with one on the PCI controller. Same issue now, expect with disk #1. Once the system's up, I can reactivate the RAID, it will resync for a while, then go to "Healthy", and will stay that way for an indefinite amount of time - until I reboot. As soon as I reboot, the disk drops again. I've ruled out disk + cable with the recabling. I don't believe it would be the controller as it seems to work fine most of the time - only failing on reboot, and the other port on the same controller connects the system disk - which is clearly working. I did look in the event log, but didn't see anything particularly relevant (although I didn't know what I was looking for - just looked for anything with a "Warning" or "Error" symbol that looked disk-related :)). I'm not particularly familiar with RAID on Windows, does anyone have any idea why this might be doing this? Any idea how to fix it? Any suggestions appreciated! -- Adam

  • High memory utilization with firebird + windows server 2008 r2

    i have a Windows Server 2008 R2 (64bit) running a 64bit installation of Firebird 2.1.4.18393_0 in a 4GB phisical server. After a while, the task manager show that all memory is used, but the sum of the memory of all process does not stack to the half of the memory. Unfortunally, it's start swapping. Using RAMMAP, i can see that my entire database file is mapped into the memory. This only occours in windows server 2008 r2 and windows 7 64 bit. i can use firebird 32 or 64bit installations, doesn't matter. How can i prevent this? Why this only occours in w2k8r2 and w7? tks in advance ** UPDATE Aparently, this occours by the use of all memory by the file system cache. The microsoft documentations explain that this WAS a issue in windows xp, 2k3, vista and 2k8, but it was solved in 7 and 2k8r2. also adds that this issue is more common in 64bit hosts. (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976618) there are some tools (DynCache, setcache and the Get/SetSystemFileCacheSize system calls from windows API) that allows me to fix a upper limit to the memory usage by the fscache, but the documentation argues that i should not do this in w2k8r2 because it will severely impact on the overall system performance. anyway, i tried, the performance remained the same shit and the use of the page file remained, although there is now more the 1gb of free memory.

    I've been trying to install ionCube onto my server but have not been having a lot of luck! My server is: Windows 2008 64bit PHP 5.3.14 Thread Safe disabled running as FastCGI In my PHP.ini I have : zend_extension="C:\Program Files (x86)\PHP\ext\ioncube_loader_win_5.2.dll" The path is correct. The DLL is from the x86 NONTS VC9 version of ionCube and PHP is using the MSVC9 (Visual C++ 2008) compiler though I have also tried using the x86 NONTS VC6 version of ionCube. I'm not getting any error but I'm also not getting ionCube when using phpinfo(): This program makes use of the Zend Scripting Language Engine: Zend Engine v2.3.0, Copyright (c) 1998-2012 Zend Technologies Apart from the mail application pools I have also set all the applications in the application pool in IIS7 to use 32bit mode. I don't know if FastCGI is running under 64 or 32 bit mode nor how to switch it or whether it would make a difference? I know it can be a problem installing ionCube onto 64bit Windows but I have also come across threads whereby other people have also [somehow] managed to get it working but even though I seem to be doing the same as them I still can't get it working.

    I have this web site written in c#. around 400-500 users online at any time. it was on windows 2008 32 bit machine before and never ever locked/slowed down due to increased memory consumption up until i upgraded it's server to win 2008 r2 64 bit. Old server had only 4 gig ram and quad core cpu at 2ghz. site was working just fine. since i've upgraded the server i noticed (2 times with in 10 days) it started to eat ram. last night it went up to 4 gb ram. with ram increase response slows down quite a lot. recycling app pool doesn't help. I have to restart it's worker process to recover. i've noticed this usually happens if there are continuous errors. as i didn't change anything in the code am i safe to assume it is not related to memory leak in the code? did anyone came across something like that? same thing happens if i create continuous errors with classic asp. thanks

  • 2 Servers setup for redundency, backup

    I presently have 1 dedicated virtual server running my website/blog/mail, etc. This is on Hyper-V with 512MB RAM. Windows Web2008. With the VM, I have these running within it: SmarterMail – for emails MS DNS – I have my own nameservers on this server SQL Express IIS7 2 IP Address I have now leased 2 physical servers : P4 2.6Ghz 1GB RAM 80GB HDD. With these new servers, I get 2 IPs per server as well. These are running Windows 2008 Standard. With the VM the HDD was obviously on a RAID setup so I was not worried about hardware issues as it fell on the provider to manage. However, with the new servers the HDD is not RAID’d, hence my concern is that if it fails I need a backup position. What would be the most ideal setup to go for? I am thinking: Server 1: (Web/PrimaryDNS) DNS – NS1 SQL Express – OFF turn on when required, ie. Server2 is down SmarterMail – OFF turn on when required, ie. Server2 is down IIS 7 Server2:(SQL/Backup) DNS – NS2 SQL Web Edition SmarterMail IIS 7 How can I set it up so that if 1 goes down I can have everything on 2 instantly or by manual switching over. I am confused as other DNS servers will cache the web servers IP address for requests, and if that server goes down, the backup server will have a different IP. How do I make this work? I will be doing routine backups, in which case I will keep copies of backups on both servers. If I am copying the same stuff on both servers like a mirror then I am losing on using the true performance out of it. It's like 1 server is always on standby. Ideally I want SQL and web on 2 diff machines for best performance. If Server1 goes down, I should be able to switch to Server2 fairly easily. I don't have a problem with manual intervention to start the sql/mail services, etc. In terms of scalabilty, the VM has coped pretty well to date. Moving forward the SQL and IIS workload is going to double pretty quickly. Some ideas would be great.

For example, has anyone found any way to open it by default in the Recent or Browse tabs (which is what I use 90% of the time), to avoid the other tabs' slowness?     This is a question related to a previous question I posted (see here). I need to configure a .csproj file to copy some files from a directory to another one (let me call them SOURCE and DESTINATION). I also need to change the SOURCE path depending from the configuration I'm using. For example, if I compile my project in Debug mode, the SOURCE path must contain a subfolder called Debug. I tried the solution proposed by Schmitt in the previous post, using $(ConfigurationName) to set the dynamic directory into the SOURCE path. When I opened the solution containing that project, a list of links to the source files appeared in the main tree of the project and they were correctly related to the Debug mode. But when I changed to the Release mode, I saw that the path of the linked source files were set again to the Debug version. Is there a way to specify a parameter in the Include attribute of the SourceFiles element? Thank you.

    I'm using Google Test Framework to set some unit tests. I have got three projects in my solution: FN (my project) FN_test (my tests) gtest (Google Test Framework) I set FN_test to have FN and gtest as references (dependencies), and then I think I'm ready to set up my tests (I've already set everyone to /MTd (not doing this was leading me to linking errors before)). Particularly, I define a class called Embark in FN I would like to test using FN_test. So far, so good.     In VS2008, I have a web-site project. When I use find in files and search for a string, the find results window will list every occurence twice. What could be causing this? [EDIT] Below is the screen capture from VS. I was searching for the work CommissionBucketProductID within my website project. Notice that each line is returned twice. [EDIT2] In response to your questions. I am only searching within the project, not the whole solution. I currently don't have these files under VSS, although they were in the past.

    Project Output Path of the the main application is set to ......\bin\Release\ and was published flawlessly by ClickOnce before. For some strange reason, ClickOnce now fails with the following error: "Could not find file 'obj\Release\EMS.OCC600.Infrastructure.Shell.exe'. c:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5\Microsoft.Common.targets 2341 9 Infrastructure.Shell" Anyone run into this before?   • Visual Studio 2008 - Focus on textbox doesn't work when run from VS2008 as admin

    This is a minor, esoteric problem and not a showstopper, but I'm wondering what other VS2008 idiosyncrasies are out there. If you make a web app, add a textbox and run a focus function for the textbox on page load, it works when you run VS not as administrator from a Vista non-administrator account or if you run the page from a browser instance run on its own, not from VS. If you browse the page from VS as Admin, the focus doesn't work. This for Cassini and from the local IIS. Stuff like this just makes me trust VS a tad less.
