  Hi, I'm trying to write Jython where the Python file imports classes from Java I'm using Eclipse with PyDev. I've tried exporting the Java project and adding the .jar to the Jython Class Path for the Python project. I'm not sure what to do to get this to work.

Reading Coders at work I saw that lot of the interviewees suggest to dive into a project source code to learn best practices to be aware of bad habits and of course to take new inspirations for how to do things. I decided to pick a project as more self contained as I could find. My choice was Sinatra since It's 1000 LOC. Is It a good project to learn? Do you suggest another one more simple (i.e. less LOCs)? I've tried to see rails machinery before but I came out scared from It.

  Hi, I'm using Python on Appengine and am looking up the geolocation of an IP address like this: import pygeoip gi = pygeoip.GeoIP('GeoIP.dat') Location = gi.country_code_by_addr(self.request.remote_addr) (pygeoip can be found here: http://code.google.com/p/pygeoip/) I want to geolocate each page of my app for a user so currently I lookup the IP address once then store it in memcache. My question - which is quicker? Looking up the IP address each time from the .dat file or fetching it from memcache? Are there any other pros/cons I need to be aware of? For general queries like this, is there a good guide to teach me how to optimise my code and run speed tests myself? I'm new to python and coding in general so apologies if this is a basic concept.   I need to define a data structure recursively in Javascript. Here is a simple example of a circular linked list: // List a very simplified example of what the actual (non list) code does. function List(f, r) { return function(){ return [f, r]; }; } var head = List('a', List('b', List('c', head))); When this is executed, head in List 'c' is resolved to undefined, not List 'a' as I need. List is an example function that returns a function (It is not an Javascript list that I can append to). I tried to wrap the definition of head is a self executing named function, but that blew the stack when head was resolved. What is the Javascript style solution that I am overlooking?

• Why does UITableViewCell have a contentView property?

  What's the point of this contentView property? I mean: Why aren't all the subviews just added to self? Let me get that right: Every cell is a view (UITabvleViewCell is a UIView subclass). And this fat view has another fat view with same bounds sitting on top of it, called contentView. That contentView then carries all those other subviews. Now why didn't they save that extra chunk of memory? Is there any genius logic behind this decision? Would love to understand the reason for this.

• Flash content in eLearning: one SWF vs. many?

  I am designing a Flash-based language course, and I am not sure which architecture I have to choose. The content won't be uploaded to the Internet, it will be used only locally. Possible architectures: 1) A single SWF with all the data stored internally - it seems a rather clumsy and inefficient way (or it's not?). 2) To make a Flash-based interface, and to keep the data saved in a MySQL database. It presumably allows to organize the content better, avoiding self-repetitions. The problem is that the language teacher (who is not an IT specialist) will have to install additional software to handle MySQL. 3) To make a number of separate SWF files, and to make a simple HTML-file with the index. (and some other solutions I didn't think of) Which is the right architecture, most usable for the teacher and most elegant from the IT point of view?

• Cocoa - Localized string from NSDate, NSCalendarDate...

  I'm using NSDate to get a string such as "18 Jun 09", with code: NSDate *theDate = [NSDate date]; NSString *dateString = [theDate descriptionWithCalendarFormat:@"%d %b %y" timeZone:nil locale: nil]; This works, but only results in an English output. I need the output to be localized in the user's default language. Does Cocoa (Mac OS X 10.4, 10.5 in this case) provide a facility for this localization or do I have to manually localize for each case of day and & month names my self? (I have provided a locale, but although that does provide a locale-specific ordering of the date, it does not appear to do any localization of day-month names.)

• Setting Corner Radius on UIImageView not working

  I'm at a bit of a loss. I've used the layer property of UIView to round the corners of multiple elements in my app. However, this one UIImageView is simply not complying. Not sure what I am missing. The UIImageView (called previewImage) is contained in a Table View Cell.   Let there be class Example defined as: class Example def initialize(test='hey') self.class.send(:define_method, :say_hello, lambda { test }) end end On calling Example.new; Example.new I get a warning: method redefined; discarding old say_hello. This, I conclude, must be because it defines a method in the actual class (which makes sense, from the syntax). And that, of course, would prove disastrous should there be multiple instances of Example with different values in their methods. Is there a way to create methods just for the instance of a class from inside that instance? Thanks so much.

• Loading UINavigationController subclass from a Nib

  My situation is as follows: My class SettingsViewController is a subclass of UINavigationController. That class contains the logic of its rootViewController. For example, it acts as the delegate and data source for two table views in that root view controller. I have no problem setting this up programmatically. In the initializer of SettingsViewController, I can create an additional UIViewController to serve as the root view controller, position the table views in its view, and set their delegates and data sources to self. But I want to load that root view via a Nib. The problem is, I do not know how to connect that Nib with my SettingsViewController, how to set the delegates and data sources. The SettingsViewController is not accessible from within the Nib. 'File Owner' represents the root view controller, not the SettingsViewController. How do I access my UINavigationController subclass from within my root view controllers Nib? Thanks in advance.

The documentation is using SecTrustSettingsSetTrustSettings for changing the settings and reevaluate the trust. but I couldn't find this method (or the SecTrustSetting) for iOS, only for Mac. Thanks

• iPhone - a question about @property

  Hi, I am kind of newbie on Objective-C and I was looking at a code, trying to understand a few things, and I come across with this .h file: there was a declaration like that on the @interface section MyVideoClass *contrast_; then below we have @property (nonatomic, retain) MyVideoClass *contrast; @property (nonatomic, retain) FetchClass *fetchMe; The strange part is that the first has an underscrore after the name and the second one, doesn't. The other strange thing is that the guy has a call to these properties like this: FetchClass *fetchOne = [self.fetchMe contrast]; What kind of call is that? This seems pretty insane to me. I simply cannot understand what is going on here, but the code works. pretty insane. Can you guys explain me that? Forgive the stupid question, but I am still learning... thanks

  Im Working on a creation of a query who uses INSERT SELECT statement using MS SQL Server 2008: INSERT INTO TABLE1 (col1, col2) SELECT col1, col2 FROM TABLE2 Right now the excecution of this query is inside a transaction: Pseudocode: try { begin transaction; query; commit; } catch { rollback; } If TABLE2 has around 40m of rows, at the moment of making the insert on the TABLE1, if there is an error in the middle of the INSERT, will the INSERT SELECT statement make a rollback itself or I need to use a transaction to preserve data integrity? It is necessary to use a transaction? or SQL SERVER it self uses a transaction for this type of sentences.

  I know there is no concept of abstract class in ruby. But if at all it needs to be implemented, how to go about it? I tried something like... class A def self.new raise 'Doh! You are trying to instantiate an abstract class!' end end class B < A ... ... end But when I try to instantiate B, it is internally going to call A.new which is going to raise the exception. Also, modules cannot be instantiated but they cannot be inherited too. making the new method private will also not work. Any pointers?

• release viewcontroller after presenting modally

  I was watching CS193P Stanford course on Itunes, and in one of the lectures a demo was given and There it was said you could present the viewcontroller modally and then release it. Roughly like this (I know this isn't perfect but I'm on my PC atm) [self.view presentcontentmodally:myVC] [myVC release]; However this seems to produce problems. If I put a NSLog(@"%d", [myVC retainCount]) between those two lines then it returns 2 implying it is ok to release. However when I dismiss the myVC the app crashes. Nothing in the NSlog and the debugger won't show where it stopped. But I used malloc-history or something that some blog said would help. And found that it was the myVC. So should I be releasing myVC? (also when the modalVC has been dissmissed should the app's memory usuage go back to before the modalVC was presented?)

  I am defining naming conventions for a simple plugin framework. For example: index.php - the main plugin file info.php - returns an array with plugin information install.php - self-explanatory can you think of an elegant, short-hand name for a PHP file that contains the code that is to be executed before any HTML is output? Do any examples from other frameworks come to your mind? What I have been thinking of: head.php - misleading, could be mixed up with HTML <head> before_output.php - clumsy, too long init.php - not exactly correct start.php - current favourite
