• Printer recommendation

  Hi guys, I'm looking to buy a printer for home use and I'm not sure which one to get. I'm not very good when it comes to printers. Here's what I'm looking for: cheap (least $ per page) good quality (last longest, any specific brands to avoid?) not heavy printing (let's say ~5 pages per week) OK quality (I don't need "the best". • Fosfor EPUB Reader

  Instead of creating a fullblown NetBeans Platform application for doing WYSIWYG editing for EPUB, similar to Sigil, I decided to focus purely on the very narrow scope of EPUB reading. The scope is narrower and, since the application will be a lot less ambitious and smaller, a pure JavaFX implementation makes sense. When you somehow get, e.g., buy, an EPUB file, you typically read it on a tablet or mobile device. However, some people in the world, e.g., me, still have laptops. Therefore, I'm creating a small JavaFX application that unzips EPUB files, into a temp directory, and then loads them into a JavaFX WebView. Arabic support: For an application like this, simplicity is the most important thing. Very few buttons, very few options, preferably no configuration of anything. Just let the user open the EPUB file and read it, that's it, nothing fancy. CSS stylesheets and images are correctly read. It's exactly what it looks like, a reader for EPUB files. The back and forward buttons are working and you can also switch to the table of contents. When it is complete, which it pretty much is right now, publishers of EPUB files can make this small app available from their site, to simplify life for their readers, since it will run easily and well on all operating systems.

• Possible to redirect from HTTPS to HTTP behind load-balancer?

  I have a basic ASP.NET application that sits behind an F5 load-balancer. Incoming SSL requests (over HTTPS) terminate at the load-balancer and all internal communication between the load-balancer and my application servers is unsecure (over HTTP). When a unsecure request comes in, my app is able to use Response.Redirect("https://...") to redirect a secure URL with no problems. However, the other direction appears to be impossible - I cannot redirect from HTTPS to HTTP using Response.Redirect() from my application. The URL remains HTTPS for the client and does not change. Could the F5 be preventing the redirect for ever reaching the client? Is there any special configuration necessary to let this happen?

• How do I make the PC Zune download a movie, not stream it?

  As the title suggests - I have bought a TV show series season on PC Zune. My girlfriend watched the show, and now I'd like to be able to watch the show too. The catch - I'm going to go overseas on a trip soon, and I'd like to be able to watch the show from outside the US. Given that Zune won't let me stream things overseas (past experience, anyway), I would like to download the show to my computer and watch it that way. The problem is that although the full season has been "watched" it appears it was only streamed, not downloaded. Or rather, that one episode was downloaded, and the rest streamed. I bought a season pass (so all the episodes at once) and the show was bought, not rented. How do I make Zune download, not stream, a show?

• DVD wont mount Ubuntu 12.04

  I can't seem to be able to mount my optical drive. I have tried numerous solutions from this site with no results. I am not able to see the device inside the file browser either. There is a DVD in the drive. I am running 12.04 on an HP g60-235dx portable. I have a link below to the specs. I will also list what I have tried (that I can find back right now.) I know the drive is functioning, because just before Windows 7 crashed and my MBR went fubar I was watching movies just fine. I am fairly new to linux, so don't assume I know anything. • Cannot boot: FGLRX 8.780 + Kernel 2.6.35-25

  The situation before this all happened is pretty standard. I have a HP Pavillion dv5 laptop with an ATI Mobility Radeon 4200 series. It always worked fine with Ubuntu for as long as I can remember. However, at one point, something happened and truly made a majestic mess of things. It might've been extra repos I enabled with Ubuntu Tweak - I do not know. But something made it so that my system would not boot any longer. And when I say "won't boot", this is what I mean: - Durning a normal bootup, any entries (except Windows) selected with GRUB (or BURG, not even sure which one I'm using anymore) will spawn the Ubuntu loading screen - then try to start X (or GDM) 5 times. The screen goes to dark, black and back to the Ubuntu loading screen. Then it just stays there until I spawn another TTY. I have no idea what is happening or why. There are no errors in my logs, and I'm truly at a loss here. • How can I make my browser(s) finish AJAX requests instead of stopping them when I switch to another page?

  I usually need to deal with things on a page right before switching to yet another page, this ranges from "liking / upvoting a comment or post" up to "an important action" and doesn't always come with feedback on whether the action actually proceeded. This is a huge problem! I assume the action to proceed once I start the particular AJAX request, but because I switch to another page it didn't actually happen because the AJAX request got aborted. This has left me several times with coming back to the page and seeing my action didn't take place at all; to give you an idea how bad this is, this even happened once when commenting on Super User! Is there a way to tell my browser to not drop these AJAX connections but simply let them finish?

• Compilation problem [closed]

  I am trying to compile a program called Triangle Mesh Generator. It is an open source code written in ANSI C. I need it to bo a callable lib so I am using a switch (#define) created by it's Author. However I get this error: /usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-linux-gnu/4.6/../../../x86_64-linux-gnu/crt1.o: In function `_start': collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make: *** [triangle] Error 1 I am not sure why such an error occurs. Worth adding is that compiling it as a stand alone program is succesful. I am using GCC on 12.04. The lines quoted above constitute the total output. What I put in the terminal is just make in the proper folder. There are no other errors, warnings, or other messages. Link to the sources I found some additional instructions. I'll get back after reading them :] EDIT: I have found some additional instructions that let me compile it. Thanks for help. I am closing question right now. Regards

• Cisco 2950 Express Setup

  I've been donated a Cisco Catalyst 2950 Switch by the company I work for to have a play with. I've reset it back to Factory Defaults, but having an issue with getting to Express Setup. I've followed the Express Setup (And Factory Reset) guide as listed here: Catalyst 2950 Switch Getting Started Guide Everything goes fine, until I get to step 10, I enter 10.0.0.1 into the browser, but I just get a Error 324 response. • Why is an Ext4 disk check so much faster than NTFS?

  I had a situation today where I restarted my computer and it said I needed to check the disk for consistancy. About 10 minutes later (at "1%" complete), I gave up and decided to let it run when I go home. For comparison, my home computer uses Ext4 for all of the partitions, and the disk checks (which run around once week) only take a couple seconds. I remember reading that having fast disk checks was a priority, but I don't know how they could do that. So, how does Ext4 do disk checks so fast? Is there some huge breakthrough in doing this after NTFS came out (~10 years ago)? Note: The NTFS disk is ~300 GB and the Ext4 disk is ~500 GB. Both are about half full.

• Updating, etc., automatically

  Is there a way to set up Ubuntu 12.04 (or earlier versions) so that all recommended updates are done automatically, say once a week? When I say automatically, I mean no password entry or user intervention required. This sounds like a stupid request, so let me tell why I'm asking. My grandfather knows nothing about computers; he uses his solely to read Yahoo! mail. I want to get rid of his clunky, spyware-ridden Windows XP and install Ubuntu. I want to set it up so when he turns the computer on, after a couple minutes, voila!, Yahoo! mail, already signed in, ready to go. The problem is I don't want to have to go over there every week or so and make sure everything is up-to-date, he hasn't accidentally installed any spyware, etc. So can this be done? Is this the best way to set things up for my grandfather? Are there other things I should be worried about when it comes to keeping things hassle-free for him? Please don't post anything like "why not teach him how to... blah blah blah". My grandfather is 80 years old and has made it clear email is the only thing he will ever use a computer for! Thanks!

• Incremental search in Visual Studio

  Visual studio is a Great IDE and there are still lots of feature that not known to developers. Incremental search is one of them. This is a amazing feature to find code in particular document and its available from Visual Studio 2010 and carried over in Visual Studio 2012. Incremental search allows developers to search in document without blocking UI and allow to search as they type. Interesting!! right.. So let’s open visual studio and see how it works. Once you open Visual Studio and press Ctrl + I and type something it will find the string without blocking your visual studio UI. Just like following. In the above code you can see that, I have typed Cons and You can see that whole console word is highlighted. Even you can see that find dialog box on top right corner of visual studio 2012 like following. Same way if you see the footer in visual studio where it is finding cons in current document like following. • Where to ask a question about startups?

  I've got some questions about how to better run my web application development business, which has only been running for a little more than two years. It's still in its early phases, as I consider the first five years the 'early years'. Being inexperienced with business in general, I always have a lot of questions as to whether I am making the right decisions (for example, I often worry about my hiring practices, and I often worry that I may have priced new products wrongly). Is there a good site on the Stack Exchange to ask questions about things like this (for example, this site, the Project Management site, the Salesforce site, or perhaps the Personal Finance site)? I'm combing through questions and answers on each of these sites, now, and I can see questions that mimic my own. Nothing precisely the same, but things that are similar on all sites. Apart from just reading through previously asked questions, what is a good way to get a sense of whether or not my question fits on a site in the exchange? If you recommend going out of the exchange, please also let me know.

• Windows network: deny file access to another user if file is currently open

  Some users on my network are having difficulties saving files, because the file is open elsewhere. Let's say Lemuel wants to edit a file, but Bernice in the next office over is working on it. Lemuel opens, edits, and tries to save, but then gets a "no write access" error. Bernice chortles with glee (since earlier that week Lemuel stole her sandwich). Unfortunately, various softwares will not warn the user that they have opened a read-only file. Is there a way (in Windows) to limit file access to ONE user only, i.e. 777 for the first user to open the file, and 000 for all users after that? (Sorry for the Linux terminology but it gets my point across).

• Ubuntu for Phones / Touch vs Android, IOS and BlackBerry OS

  Currently I have a LG Google Nexus 4 with lots of issues because of the latest android 4.3 update. Since the update my battery drains within 7 hours when in it's standby / idle and even faster when I use it normaly! Before the Nexus 4 I had an Iphone but got sick of IOS because for me it's to much of a closed operating system and I dislike having to work with either Windows or Itunes. At this point neither Google or LG is willing to provide me (and all the others that have similar Nexus 4 problems) with a solution or even a reaction... Also i'm not very fond of the idea that the NSA (and maybe others) can and is currently monitoring millions of Android, IOS and BlackBerry OS devices all over the world. Since i've been using Ubuntu now very happily for almost 5 years I see Ubuntu for Phones / Touch as the only remedy for all this BS. Please be so kind to let me know when you will have a fully functioning version of your Ubuntu for Phones / Touch ready for consumer use. I'm realy sad that the Ubuntu Edge campaign didn't work out and hope to see lots and lots of future smartphones outfitted with Ubuntu a.s.a.p.! Keep up the good work!

• How to force ADF to speak your language (or any common language)

  When I started working for Oracle, one of the first tasks I was given was to contribute some content to a great ADF course Frank and Chris are building. Among other things, they asked me to work on a module about Internationalization. While doing research work, I unearthed a little gem I had overlooked all those years. JDeveloper, as you may know, speaks your language - as long as your language is English, that is. Oracle ADF, on the other hand, is a citizen of the world. It is available in more than 25 different languages. But while this is a wonderful feature for end users, it is rather cumbersome for developers. Why is that? Have you ever tried to search the OTN forums for a solution with a non-English error message as your query? I have, once. But how can you force ADF to use English for its logging operations? Playing with your system settings will not help, unfortunately. By default, ADF will output its error messages in the selected locale for the operating system account the application server runs on. The only way to change this behavior is to pass initialization parameters to the JVM used by the application server. It is even possible to specify the language and country/region separately. In the example below, we choose English and the United States respectively. -Duser.language=en -Duser.country=US In the case of WebLogic Server, it is possible to add such parameters in setDomainEnv.sh (or .cmd) to apply the settings to all the managed servers present on a node. • Multiple IPs from one router

  I would like to know if it is possible (and if so, how) to configure a router running dd-wrt (or openwrt) to supply connected devices with two ip addresses. The network looks like this: [Internet] | [Router] | | [Comp1] [Comp2] ... My ISP provides me with enough public IP adresses to give all devices on my network one each. The easiest way to set that up is to just use the router as a switch. This will however lead to problems with some LAN based applications. I would still like to use Samba-shares between the computers as well as a vpn server. What I am looking for basically is if it is possible to use the router as a DHCP server for a local network (let's say giving IP adresses 192.168.1.xx to connected computers) while at the same time passing through public IP addresses to each as well?

  I host my own multiple Websites on my server. How do i setup my own child nameserver? There are 4 different websites, with .com and .net and .ro at the end. I moved them to my own server. My Domain Administration (Registrar) let's me define my own child nameserver with my own IP and i've added my nameserver as my domain nameservers list. ns.something.ro as the first and only in the nameservers list ns.something.ro with my own IP address as the child nameserver I've setup everything and it works (kind of). When i use my ns IP adress directly i can of course access everything. Using "normal" external dnses will not work. As expected others on the web can't resolve correctly. What's wrong? Am i missing something?

• Best way to allow fans/users to contribute to a facebook page now that discussions are gone? [migrated]

  I run a facebook page with over 23,000 fans. I formerly had users submit recipes to the discussions tab. However, now that it is gone, I'm having difficulty finding a way to let users share recipes. If they simply post it in the stream, it goes away much to quickly. I've tried creating a new note with my personal account and tagging my page, but that does not make it show up in my pages "notes" section. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

• How can I set Qmail to relay all mail to one address

  I'm new to qmail it's setup and working like it should. I need to set it to do something a bit different. I need it to take all mail that would be incoming to it and relay all of that to one address as opposed to whatever address they could have possibly set it to. The idea is we have setup a test enviroment and we want no e-mails from a test server to actually go out to real people so this relay server will catch all of that outgoing mail and throw it into a test e-mail account inbox to check for errors and so forth. I'm honestly not sure if this is even possible so if it's not let me know now so I can come up with a different method to manage all these test e-mails. Thanks

• How do I restore the Gnome Panel volume control in Ubuntu 10.04?

  I use alsa, and I don't have a volume control applet on my Gnome Panel. When I right click and select "add to panel", there is nothing that has to do with "sound", "audio" or "volume" in the list, and the "Indicator Applet" or "Indicator Applet Session" things have no volume controls, or properties that would let you enable any sort of volume control. How can I get a volume control in Ubuntu, so I don't have to run aumix in a terminal or something? I've been using Linux since Redhat 5, it's beyond me why these sorts of problems are still around. Someone should just put a damn "Volume Control" element in the list of things to add to the panel, even if it doesn't work, perhaps showing an error message.

• Monitoring the wall time of a process on windows?

  Windows Task Manager has the ability to show the current CPU time of any given running process on windows, is there any way (not necessarily through Task Manager) to get the current wall time of a process? An example, let's say I have a script that reliably runs for about 45 minutes. Without adding a progress bar to the script, is there any way to figure out for how long it has been running? The math behind this seems pretty straight forward; WallTime = CurrentWallTime - WallTimeProcessStarted. Likewise, since the math is so simple, is there anyway to get the time that a process was started at?
