• Shadow mapping: what is the light looking at?

  I'm all set to set up shadow mapping in my 3d engine but there is one thing I am struggling to understand. The scene needs to be rendered from the light's point of view so I simply first move my camera to the light's position but then I need to find out which direction the light is looking. Since its a point light its not shining in any particular direction. How do I figure out what the orientation for the light point of view is?

  Amikor HA (High Availability - Magas Rendelkezésre Állás) megoldásokról beszélünk, általában elsoként a klaszterek, redundáns megoldások jutnak eszünkbe. Pedig nem csak a hardver hibákra kell gondolni, hanem a tervezett leállásokkal is érdemes foglalkozni. Az egyik talán legkevésbé megoldott probléma az, ha egy alkalmazás verzió váltást kell végrehajtani úgy, hogy közben változik az adatstruktúra is. Ez nyilván azt eredményezi, hogy le kell állítani az adatbázist is, és az átszervezéseket, akár adat átalakításokkal együtt végre kell hajtani. De a legnagyobb probléma talán az, hogy amennyiben valami rosszul sül el, és vissza kell állni a kiinduló állapotra, akkor az adatbázis mentést is vissza kell tölteni, hiszen átmenetileg minden felhasználó aki épp használatba vette az új alkalmazás verziót már egy új adatstruktúrába kezdett dolgozni. Az Oracle Database Online Application Upgrade képessége, vagy pontosabb nevén az Edition Based Redefinition pontosan ezt a problémát célozza meg. Az Edition Based Redefinition 3 alap objektummal muködik, ezek: edition, editioning view és crossedition trigger. Az edition egy új nonschema objektum típus. 11gR2 verziótól minden adatbázis rendelkezik legalább egy edition-nel, melynek neve Ora$Base. Minden új edition egy már létezo gyermeke kell, hogy legyen. Amikor kapcsolódunk az adatbázishoz, meghatározható, hogy melyik edition-höz kapcsolódjunk. Kizárólag nézetek, szinonímák és PL/SQL ojektum típusoknak lehet több edíciója (ezek metadat típusú objektumok, nem tartalmaznak adatokat). Azok az objektumok, melyek több edícióval rendelkeznek egyedileg csak úgy azonosíthatók, ha az owner, name, namespace mellett az edition-t is megnevezzük. Azaz két vagy több példánya is létezhet egy adatbázison belül ugyanazzal az owner, name és namespace azonosítókkal rendelkezo objektumnak, amennyiben használjuk az edition-based redefinition-t. Egy új objektum típus, az editioning view is edicionálható. Mivel a fizikai tábla nem edicionálható (elkerülendo az adatok többszörös tárolását és teljesítmény gondokat), ezért az editioning view feladata egy adott tábla egyszeru leképezése egy nézet formájában, ami már több edition-ben is létezhet, és képes elfedni a tábla módosításait. Amennyiben a tábla módosítások olyan táblákat érintenek, amelyek tartalmát  az alkalmazás felhasználók módosítják, szükség van olyan triggerekre, amelyek az egyes editioning view-k között a módosításokat karbantartják. Ezek a crossedition triggerek. Természetesen ahhoz, hogy az online application upgrade muködjön, minden érintett tábla elé el kell készíteni az editioning nézetet és a megfelelo crossedition triggereket. Ezeket használva az alkalmazás két vagy több különbözo verzió képes ugyanazon adatbázison párhuzamosan futni, és ha megtörtént a verzióváltás, akkor még mindig egyszeru visszaállni a régi verzióra egészen addig, amíg a régi edition eldobásra nem kerül. • Everything turning black when pitching down

  Just a quick questions about something that's occurring in my world. Every time I pitch my camera downward, everything starts turning black, and if I pitch upward, everything sort of intensifies. I'm multiplying my normals by the normal matrix in the shader, and I'm multiplying my lights direction by the model view matrix. If I leave the normal and light dir in world space everything ends up fine. I thought putting them both in view space would not cause those weird things to happen?

• Chrome mistakenly downloads localhost/wordpress pages, but Firefox doesn't

  I have Wordpress installed at http://localhost/wordpress When I try and view a page in Chrome, it downloads the PHP file rather than showing the page. When I view in Firefox, everything works fine. when I create localhost/test.php containing simply <?php echo "hello world" ?> it displays in both browsers. Any ideas on what might be wrong? $ dpkg -l | grep apache outputs: apache2, apache2-mpm-prefork, apache2-utils, apache2.2-bin, apache2.2-common, libapache2-mod-php5

  Different SOA Domain Configurations In this blog entry I would like to introduce three different configurations for a SOA environment.  I have omitted load balancers and OTD/OHS as they introduce a whole new round of discussion.  For each possible deployment architecture I have identified some of the advantages. Super Domain This is a single EDG style domain for everything needed for SOA/OSB.   It extends the standard EDG slightly but otherwise assumes a single “super” domain. This is basically the SOA EDG.  I have broken out JMS servers and Coherence servers to improve scalability and reduce dependencies. Key Points Separate JMS allows those servers to be kept up separately from rest of SOA Domain, allowing JMS clients to post messages even if rest of domain is unavailable. JMS servers are only used to host application specific JMS destinations, SOA/OSB JMS destinations remain in relevant SOA/OSB managed servers. Separate Coherence servers allow OSB cache to be offloaded from OSB servers. Use of Coherence by other components as a shared infrastructure data grid service. Coherence cluster may be managed by WLS but more likely run as a standalone Coherence cluster. Benefits Single Administration Point (1 Admin Server) Closely follows EDG with addition of application specific JMS servers and standalone Coherence servers for OSB caching and application specific caches. Coherence grid can be scaled independent of OSB/SOA. JMS queues provide for inter-application communication. Drawbacks Patching is an all or nothing affair. Startup time for SOA may be slow if large number of composites deployed. Multiple Domains This extends the EDG into multiple domains, allowing separate management and update of these domains.  I see this type of configuration quite often with customers, although some don't have OWSM, others don't have separate Coherence etc. SOA & BAM are kept in the same domain as little benefit is obtained by separating them. Key Points Separate JMS allows those servers to be kept up separately from rest of SOA Domain, allowing JMS clients to post messages even if other domains are unavailable. JMS servers are only used to host application specific JMS destinations, SOA/OSB JMS destinations remain in relevant SOA/OSB managed servers. Separate Coherence servers allow OSB cache to be offloaded from OSB servers. Use of Coherence by other components as a shared infrastructure data grid service. Coherence cluster may be managed by WLS but more likely run as a standalone Coherence cluster. Benefits Follows EDG but in separate domains and with addition of application specific JMS servers and standalone Coherence servers for OSB caching and application specific caches. OSB may be kept running independent of other domains, allowing service virtualization to continue independent of other domains availability. All domains use same OWSM policy store (MDS-WSM). Drawbacks Multiple domains to manage and configure. Multiple Admin servers (single view requires use of Grid Control) Multiple Admin servers/WSM clusters waste resources. Additional homes needed to enjoy benefits of separate patching. Cross domain trust needs setting up to simplify cross domain interactions. Startup time for SOA may be slow if large number of composites deployed. Shared Service Environment This model extends the previous multiple domain arrangement to provide a true shared service environment.This extends the previous model by allowing multiple additional SOA domains and/or other domains to take advantage of the shared services.  Only one non-shared domain is shown, but there could be multiple, allowing groups of applications to share patching independent of other application groups. Key Points Separate JMS allows those servers to be kept up separately from rest of SOA Domain, allowing JMS clients to post messages even if other domains are unavailable. JMS servers are only used to host application specific JMS destinations, SOA/OSB JMS destinations remain in relevant SOA/OSB managed servers. Separate Coherence servers allow OSB cache to be offloaded from OSB servers. Use of Coherence by other components as a shared infrastructure data grid service Coherence cluster may be managed by WLS but more likely run as a standalone Coherence cluster. Shared SOA Domain hosts Human Workflow Tasks BAM Common "utility" composites Single OSB domain provides "Enterprise Service Bus" All domains use same OWSM policy store (MDS-WSM) Benefits Follows EDG but in separate domains and with addition of application specific JMS servers and standalone Coherence servers for OSB caching and application specific caches. Coherence grid can be scaled independent of OSB/SOA. JMS queues provide for inter-application communication. Patch lifecycle of OSB/SOA/JMS are no longer lock stepped. JMS may be kept running independently of other domains allowing applications to insert messages fro later consumption by SOA/OSB. OSB may be kept running independent of other domains, allowing service virtualization to continue independent of other domains availability. All domains use same OWSM policy store (MDS-WSM). Supports large numbers of deployed composites in multiple domains. Single URL for Human Workflow end users. Single URL for BAM end users. Drawbacks Multiple domains to manage and configure. Multiple Admin servers (single view requires use of Grid Control) Multiple Admin servers/WSM clusters waste resources. Additional homes needed to enjoy benefits of separate patching. Cross domain trust needs setting up to simplify cross domain interactions. Human Workflow needs to be specially configured to point to shared services domain. Summary The alternatives in this blog allow for patching to have different impacts, depending on the model chosen.  Each organization must decide the tradeoffs for itself.  One extreme is to go for the shared services model and have one domain per SOA application.  This requires a lot of administration of the multiple domains.  The other extreme is to have a single super domain.  This makes the entire enterprise susceptible to an outage at the same time due to patching or other domain level changes.  Hopefully this blog will help your organization choose the right model for you.

• Question about BoundingSpheres and Ray intersections

  I'm working on a XNA project (not really a game) and I'm having some trouble with picking algorithm. I have a few types of 3D models that I draw to the screen, and one of them is a switch. So I'm trying to make a picking algorithm that would enable the user to click on the switch and that would trigger some other function. The problem is that the BoundingSphere.Intersect() method always returns null as result. For every object marked as switch (I use simple numbers to determine which object is to be drawn), a BoundingSphere is created (center is on the coordinates of the 3D object, and the diameter is always the same), and added to the list. The objects are drawn normally (and spheres.Count is not 0), I can see them on the screen, but the Window title always says "Empty" (of course this is just for testing purposes, I will add the real function when I get positive results) meaning that there is no intersection between the ControlRay and any of the bounding spheres. I think that my basic matrices (world, view and projection) are making some problems, but I cant figure out what. Please help.

Main idea, that i have left bottom, right bottom, left top, right top points, that camera can not move outside, so player will not see map out of bounds. The problem that I have is that the sever is on my laptop and every time I log off or close my laptop, they are losing connection to the DB and can not add or view any more. It seems that the port is closed or something. Is there a way to keep the port and their connection established all the time even when I'm logging out?

• Strategy to use two different measurement systems in software

  I have an application that needs to accept and output values in both US Custom Units and Metric system. Right now the conversion and input and output is a mess. You can only enter in US system, but you can choose the output to be US or Metric, and the code to do the conversions is everywhere. So I want to organize this and put together some simple rules. So I came up with this: Rules user can enter values in either US or Metric, and User Interface will take care of marking this properly All units internally will be stored as US, since the majority of the system already has most of the data stored like that and depends on this. It shouldn't matter I suppose as long as you don't mix unit. All output will be in US or Metric, depending on user selection/choice/preference. In theory this sounds great and seems like a solution. However, one little problem I came across is this: There is some data stored in code or in the database that already returns data like this: 4 x 13/16" screws, which means "four times screws". I need the to be in either US or Metric. Where exactly do I put the conversion code for doing the conversion for this unit? The above already mixing presentation and data, but the data for the field I need to populate is that whole string. I can certainly split it up into the number 4, the 13/16", and the " x " and the " screws", but the question remains... where do I put the conversion code? Different Locations for Conversion Routines 1) Right now the string is in a class where it's produced. I can put conversion code right into that class and it may be a good solution. Except then, I want to be consistent so I will be putting conversion procedures everywhere in the code at-data-source, or right after reading it from the database. The problem though is I think that my code will have to deal with two systems, all throughout the codebase after this, should I do this. 2) According to the rules, my idea was to put it in the view script, aka last change to modify it before it is shown to the user. And it may be the right thing to do, but then it strikes me it may not always be the best solution. (First, it complicates the view script a tad, second, I need to do more work on the data side to split things up more, or do extra parsing, such as in my case above). 3) Another solution is to do this somewhere in the data prep step before the view, aka somewhere in the middle, before the view, but after the data-source. This strikes me as messy and that could be the reason why my codebase is in such a mess right now. It seems that there is no best solution. What do I do?

I'm able to mount and view the digital media folders, but I'm looking for behavior more like the Mac/Windows iExplorer app that will list the /var folder as well as Applications, etc rather than just making it look like an external filesystem. I've found a few options that require jailbreak but I'd rather not go that route if it's at all possible. Thanks!

  One of the first questions people asked when they start using the Oracle Unified Method (OUM) is “how do I find X ?” Well of course no one is really looking for “X”!! but typically an OUM user might know the Task ID, or part of the Task Name, or maybe they just want to find out if there is any content within OUM that is related to a couple of keys words they have in their mind. Here are three quick tips I give people: 1. Open up one of the OUM Views, then click “Expand All”, and then use your Browser’s search function to locate a key Word. For example, Google Chrome or Internet Explorer: <CTRL> F, then type in a key Word, i.e. Architecture This is fast and easy option to use, but it only searches the current OUM page 2. Use the PDF view of OUM Open up one of the OUM Views, and then click the PDF View button located at the top of the View. Depending on your Browser’s settings, the PDF file will either open up in a new Window, or be saved to your local machine. In either case, once the PDF file is open, you can use the built in PDF search commands to search for key words across a large portion of the OUM Method Pack. This is great option for searching the entire Full Method View of OUM, including linked HTML pages, however the search will not included linked Documents, i.e. Word, Excel. 3. Use your operating systems file index to search for key words This is my favorite option, and one I use virtually every day. I happen to use Windows Search, but you could also use Google Desktop Search, of Finder on a MAC. All you need to do (on a Windows machine) is to make sure your local OUM folder structure is included in the Windows Index. Go to Control Panel, select Indexing Options, and ensure your OUM folder is included in the Index, i.e. C:/METHOD/OM40/OUM_5.6 Once your OUM folders are indexed, just open up Windows Search (or Google Desktop Search) and type in your key worlds, i.e. Unit Testing The reason I use this option the most is because the Search will take place across the entire content of the Indexed folders, included linked files.   I have successfully installed OpenManage on a CentOS 5.4 server and I'm able to use OpenManage through the web interface running on port 1311, but I would like to be able to expose this information through the SNMP server. I don't know SNMP particularly well so the configuration is a result of trial and error. I've tried to follow the description pointed out in the Open Manage Server Administrator User Guide. I've followed the documentation regarding SNMP configuration, but without success. • web services access not being reached thru the web browser

  I am trying to reference my .asmx webservices in .NET but my server is not exposed to the internet. When I put on the following address I get the message mentioned below. What's the reason for not being able to see the directory? Am I missing something in my IIS configuraction? Am I missing anything in my permissions? Just as reference I have other folders with webservices and I have the same issue. When I login to the server I am doing it with my windows user and password (I am using windows authentication). It's necessary to mention that when I put the URL I am getting a popup screen to put in my userid and password but it seems that's not able to validate since keeps asking me a couple of times.   My home page in Firefox [v4.0] and Internet Explorer [v9.0.8112.16421, Update Versions RTM (KB982861)] is currently set to Google but when I depress the quick start icon to start up either browser, I am getting the following immediate results: Unable to connect (In Firefox) Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at www.google.com. The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments. If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection. If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web. Things I've tried: HiJackThis Complete scan with Avira AntiVirus Premium. What am I overlooking? What should I do to address this problem?
