  • One of the partion on a usb harddisk cannot automount

    It is a very strange problem. My usb harddisk has four partitions, one is primary, the other three are logical (contained within an extended partition). When I plug in the disk, three of the partitions are mounted automatically except one--the first logical partition in the extended partition. Initially I thought it is the problem of system (at that time I used Mint). But after I change to Ubuntu 12.04, the problem wasn't solved. I don't want to add a rule in fstab, and I want to know what happened.   • One Step-Ahead A-Star

    I am attempting to create a server-centric RTS (as opposed to usual parallel synchronised simulation route of most RTS games today) - however I am still leveraging the discreet N-turns-ahead paradigm discussed by one of the AOE developers on Gamasutra. I have [possibly questionably?] decided that the path finding should only ever find the next cell the entity needs to move to, and was wondering if anyone has any clever ideas on how to optimize the algorithm for this specific scenario - or any other ideas on how to keep the pathfinding as lean as possible on the server. I have investigated a few possible algorithms but could only come up with one appropriation: Tiered A-Star - Relatively large T1 tiles, work out (and cache) each cell as you enter it. Other than that: doing the full A-Star pass and caching the entire path, which might use too much memory if a large amount of units are present. I know about the existence of naive progressive pathfinding algorithms (if you hit a block, turn in the direction closer to your target etc.) but they suffer from infinite feedback loops - and very poor pathing even if visited blocks are memorised.   • How to target just one search engine and optimise for that

    I've been dabbling with SEO a lot in the last 6 months, and one thing that has surprised me is the disparity between Google and Bing in the way they deliver results. A website ranked for a specific keyword/phrase on Google may rank 3rd on the first page, but using the same keyword/phrase on Bing will display the same website but ranked 15th for the exact same keyword/phrase. I came up with the idea to increase traffic to my website by targetting Bing instead of Google for several reasons. The biggest one is that while it's not the biggest search provider, people still use it, and I feel that if other websites have been "neglected" and not optimised for Bing my website would stand a better chance of getting near the top of their search rankings. The question is though how would I do this? A lot of the SEO advice on the internet is generic, but I can't help feeling it's Google orientated for obvious reasons. How could I optimise my website to be Bing friendly, rather than Google friendly? I know it sounds like suicide as I'm taking myself out of the Google mindset, but I feel it could work wonders for traffic to the site.

  • How to focus on one topic? [closed]

    I have a huge problem while reading computer books. Every couple pages I'll end up googling something I want to learn more about, but then I'll find something on that page that I'll want to learn more about and google that (sometimes programming related, sometime hardware related). Normally after wasting around 3 hours going into different subjects I'll return to the original text only to repeat the process a few pages later. Any advice for sticking to one subject and learning that in-depth? I have tons of programming books I've read half-way through since I'll become interested in other languages/topics (not that I'm not interested in the books I've started). Also, what would be worth focusing on in depth? I've gone into Python in the most depth but for classes I'm learning Java and assembly (ARM and Motorola 68000). Also, I've taken a class on C++. Lately I've been spending most of my time learning about Linux instead of programming though. I'm not sure what would be worth focusing on the most to get a job. In other words, how can you focus on one topic and not let curiosity about everything else get in the way? Thanks in advance, Brian

  • Ubuntu One has high CPU usage but no syncing

    over the weekend I updated my computer to Windows 8. So far Ubuntu One was running smoothly, but ever since the update (clean, new install) Ubuntu doesn't sync any more. In Windows 7 it would start to sync at full internet speed as soon as I drop a file. But now in Windows 8, as soon as I drop a new file into the Ubuntu One folder, CPU usage goes up to about 50 % and no network traffic occurs. This stays like that for a couple of minutes, CPU usage goes back to normal and then the client says that all is in sync - which isn't true. Is it too early for Windows 8? Do others have the same problem or is there something I can do about it? I try a couple of different things, and realized that if the file size is 20 MB the files get uploaded. The original file was 1.5 GB. I also didn't work with 200, 100 and 50 MB large files. But even with 20 MB large files, the upload is very slow and not steady. The log give plenty of this error: - twisted - ERROR - Failure: exceptions.TypeError About which I don't know the meaning. By the way, the account works just fine on the Ubuntu 12.04 partition. Any help is greatly appreciated. -Peter

  • What kinds of issues can one expect when changing a domain names registar? (3 questions)

    Assuming that there are no 'unusual' items that come up, what kind of disruptions can one expect when moving a domain between registrars? I understand some of the below may vary over registrars. But assuming both ends are large proficient registrars: a) Will the NS settings be mirrored? We use a dedicated dns service provider so we are not using the originating registrars name servers. All that we are concerned about is that the existing NS values are mirrored at the target registrar. b) Are incoming domain transfers automated on the target registrar end? Eg: If we begin the transfer process during business hours at the source registrar, will someone have to manually approve the inbound transfer (most likely during their business hours) at the target registrar? c) Is the domain ever 'in limbo'? At any time in the process is there ever a time when the NS values for the domain are not populated (as they were prior to initiating the transfer) OR one does not have access to populate them (at the target registrar)?     Had to show someone the door today... bummer.     At Big Robot Games we really only have one rule and it's not all that complex:   If you're going to hang out here all day, you should satisfy AT LEAST one of the following criteria: 1) You buy some food and/or drinks. 2) You occasionally buy product. 3) You play as part of a sanctioned tournaent or gaming group. 4) You act like you have some sense (i.e. have manners.)   We would love it if you manage to do all of the above, of course, but we're really perfectly content to settle for only getting a 1-2 of them at a time.    We don't have a problem with people bringing food in, and we understand that you aren't going to buy a game every time you come here. And yes, we know that people enjoy hanging out here with their friends. We can even overlook your odd quirks and personality issues, provided you're spending a little money once in a while (this IS a BUSINESS, after all.)   However... if you can't manage to do ANY of the things I listed above, and then you get lippy with me about it, well... it's time to say goodbye.

    I spoke to my first potential client today and he told me about the requirements of his project - an Android app. He is a well-known designer / photographer in my country and now wants me to "convert the website into an app, custom-tailored". So the requirements, details stripped out, are as follows: eCommerce Aggregating all his content like videos, blogs, tweets, etc. into the app Live streaming any of his studio demos Augmented reality. So that people can see what his painting will look like on their wall before they buy it Taxi Sharing Now, for a freelance project, it seems too over-scoped. I am not saying that I cannot do it. I can. But let me be realistic: There is a steep learning curve when it comes to VR. I am not a tester. I have never white-box tested my own apps. I always black-box test. Since he is a renowned artist, something short of perfect might harm his public image So, I asked him for 2 weeks' worth of time before I give him the final answer. Now knowing whom to consult for advise, I am posting the question here. Although interesting and personally challenging, I am split-minded about accepting a project like this. I will be the only developer for this. Should one reject a project that seems to be over-scoped for one's own abilities?

    I'm trying to change the XAMPP's web root default directory /opt/lampp/htocs to another one like /home/me/Dropbox/public_html without success. I've edited the file /opt/lampp/etc/httpd.conf # old line: DocumentRoot "/opt/lampp/htdocs" DocumentRoot "/home/me/Dropbox/public_html" #...etc... # old line: <Directory "/opt/lampp/htdocs"> <Directory "/home/me/Dropbox/Work/public_html"> # # Possible values for the Options directive are "None", "All", # or any combination of: # Indexes Includes FollowSymLinks SymLinksifOwnerMatch ExecCGI MultiViews # etc... I've did this as said in this article: Using Ubuntu One to synchronise htdocs? Then I've restarted Apache and I've got a permission error 403 on every page I've called with the web browser. So I've changed folder and files permission to 755. I've did this as said in this article: What file permissions should I set on web root? The problem still remains the same, I have the 403 error on every page I try to reach with the web browser. I have the same problem on a Mac using XAMPP. So everythig works fine if the folder remains the original /opt/lampp/htocs. How can I change it correctly?

  • Can I have a computer with 2 physical HDs, & Dual boot option, one for Windows & one for Ubuntu

    When my HD failed in my old computer with a dual core, I immediately went out and bought a new 6 core PC because I needed it for business and had to have an immediate solution. The old computer was otherwise a good computer. I don't want to spend a $100+ for a new operating system for the old computer because the Windows 7 Professional opperating system for the new computer will only allow one install. So, I decided to look and see if there were any free operating systems and found Ubuntu. I downloaded it and burned a live CD and would like to try it on the old computer. I found a 200 GB HD I can buy for $30 and the seller will format it any way I want. There are also other HDs available at a similar price. What I was thinking I would like to do is buy 2 HDs. Then I can have one formatted for Ubuntu 12.04 and install Windows XP Pro SP1 on the other HD for which I have the original installation CD. Then I would like to have a dual boot option so that when I power up the computer, I can choose whether to use Windows XP or Ubuntu. Is this possible? If so, how would I do it, that is, arrange it so a dual boot option presents itself on power up.

    Yesterday I’ve release an updated version of QueryUnit, the version 0.0.0.8. QueryUnit now supports AreNotEqual, Greater, and Less assertions and is more capable of managing strings results. I must say that I cannot live anymore without a proper Unit Testing of a BI solution. Just yesterday happened that one of the unit tests at a customer site failed showing a subtle situation where the release of a new version of custom application would have corrupted the source of BI data with a very low chance that someone would have noticed it before several days. It may happen when you have more the 15 systems that handles the data needed by your BI solution. The key message of this situation is “Trust No One”: if your data hasn’t passed quality testing it’s not trustable. Period.   • Apply LADSPA filter to only one channel of multichannel output with Alsa and PulseAudio

    I want to apply a filter, specifically SWH's glame-bandpass-iir, to only one of several output channels. I want unfiltered output to go to the front, rear and LFE channels with bandpass filtered output for the center channel. I'm assuming that this needs to be done with Alsa's /etc/asound.conf but I cannot understand the documentation well enough to figure out how. If there is a better way, via PulseAudio, Jack or whatever, I'm open to whatever works. Thanks.

The question I keep asking myself is: should I stick to one language when looking for a tool to do a particular task (e.g. NLTK, PDFMiner, CLD, CRFsuite, etc.)? Or is it OK to mix and match looking for the best tool regardless of what language it's written in (e.g. OpenNLP, ParsCit, poppler, CFR++, etc.) and warp my code around them?

  • Pack of resources in one big file with XNA

    Is it possible to pack all the little .xnb files into one big file? Given the level of abstraction of the XNA Framework I though this would come out of the box but I can't find any well integrated solution. So far the best candidate is XnaZip but in addition to having to compile the resources in a post-build event, and a little trouble porting the game to XBOX I have to rename all the references to resources I have already implemented.
