• Can I make a business in teaching home users Ubuntu [on hold]

  I was thinking about a way to bring Ubuntu to the bigger public, since it has great advantages for people in the lower income class that only use a PC for basic usage. They pay for a windows licence without actually needing windows because 95% of what they do is in a browser and the other 5% is typing a word document or making a simpel Excel sheet. So for these people something like Ubuntu is ideal, they can prolong the life of their old PC or laptop with Ubuntu and thus saving extra money. And as we all know, saving money is not only interesting for the lowest of income but for most of us. But when I talk to people they don't want to use Ubuntu because they know Windows and they don't know this, they'll complain about having to adapt to windows 8 but adapting to Ubuntu seems a bridge too far. But what if someone in the neighborhood gave simple Ubuntu courses. Teaching people about Ubuntu, stuff like: What is an OS What is Ubuntu How do I obtain Ubuntu How do I install Ubuntu How do I set up my email in Ubuntu How do I make a text document in Ubuntu How do I update my facebook wall in Ubuntu ... Simple basic PC usage, but within Ubuntu. But as much as I would like to work for free all day, I can't do this for free for people outside of my social circle. So I was wondering if it is possible to make a business and make money with giving Ubuntu courses, or are their steps to be taken before this is possible. However... Do I need an Ubuntu or Canonical license? Do I need to get a certificate? Do I have to make some kind of deal or contract with Canonical? Just to be clear this is all just an idea in my head at this point, I'm just gathering information. I'm not a teacher at a school, just a programmer that is thinking about options in life. I think internship programs are a great opportunity for young people to gain experience and also to start building a career. As companies are looking for the candidates with the best skills and some experience, it’s difficult to get a job. It’s a paradox isn’t it? You are applying for a entry-level position, but you won’t get it because they’ll be searching for someone who has experience. This is why internship is a good solution to improve your skills. You will learn many things, you might get a mentor and also perform given tasks. What else could you do? In my opinion you should invest in yourself. Try to focus on both education and skills. In order to get a good job in an international and successful company, it’s not enough a university diploma. You could learn a foreign language because it’s usually required. Employers are also looking for good computer skills, so this could be something you could take into consideration before applying to a job. There are also some personal characteristics like communication abilities, self-reliance, self-confidence or ability to solve the crisis situations that companies look at when hiring a person. You could consider attending some training in order to improve these soft skills. Getting a job is difficult, but also when you make it and get one you’ll still finding challenging to stay there. You might realize it is not the dream job, but being patient and trying to learn as much as possible will help you to achieve more. I think every experience is valuable. • Windows Embedded Compact 7 in Padua

  Yesterday I did a presentation about Windows CE at the University of Padua Even if the picture seems to suggest that I just showed and empty slide, I illustrated the new features of the OS and did a quick demo of Silverlight for Windows Embedded on Windows Embedded Compact 7 (I’ve to get used to this new name), showing the new tools that provide a better integration between Expression Blend and Visual Studio for the development of Silverlight applications (I hope to be able to write more on this topic soon!). The Operating System was running on some real hardware (TI OMAP3530 evaluation board) and many people had a chance to interact with the new customizable shell. Most of the 60 people attending were still awake at the end of the one hour and a half session, and some of them even asked questions! I would like to thank all the people attending and all the people of Arrow, Fortech Embedded Labs and the University of Padua that made this event possible and provide me the tool and the time to do this presentation. • WiFi problems on several Ubuntu installations

  Okay this is the first time I have ever had to ask a question as usually the Ubuntu community have answered everything already but on this occasion there are many people asking for the answer but not one good solution has become available so far so someone please help or I will have to install Windows on my sons and my girlfriends PCs and that would be a disaster as I am trying to help convince people to move from Windows. I installed 12.04 on three computers on the same day. Dell Inspiron (Works Perfect) Toshiba Satellite Home built Desktop The Dell works perfect but the other two either keep losing connection to the wireless Internet and even when they are connected they stop connecting to web sites, for some reason it searches Google fine but will not connect to web sites when a link is clicked. So far people have recommended in other forums: Removing network manager and installing wicd (didn't solve it) Changing the MTU in the wireless settings (didn't solve it) All sorts of messing about with Firefox settings (this doesn't solve it and even if it did this would leave most average PC users scratching their heads and wishing they had stuck to windows) The problem exists on two very different machines and different wireless cards so I doubt its a driver or hardware issue, also many other Ubuntu users are having the same problem with a vast array of different machines and wireless cards. Can someone please give a good solution to this as its going to turn a lot of people away from Ubuntu if they cannot get this sorted. I would give some PC specs but the two machines are vastly different and the other people complaining of this problem also have very different systems all showing the same problem.

  Internally we work with metric units and use decimal fractions for sub units, e.g. 1cm or 0.35cm or 23mm) We're building a user oriented design tool for laying out reports and was wondering what the most most common approach taken by UI developers who are still working in Imperial measurements (Inches etc.) when it comes to decimalised fractions. Most of my cultural references point to people using 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 or 1/32 inch when measuring fractions. But when faced with decimal equivalent what do people tend to do? For example do people use 0.5, 0.25, 0.125 etc or do you people roll these up to say 0.5, 03, and 0.1 inch? Sorry for the confusing question.

• What videoconferencing platforms work best for distributed software development teams?

  Today I had a religious experience: I participated in a videoconference using a high quality Polycom system. This made a huge difference in communication quality -- people that I had a terrible time understanding previously now sounded like Shakespeare. Seeing a high quality video image was enormously helpful. I asked operations how much the Polycom cost and they said that it cost $20K new and $4K off eBay. So this solution doesn't work for people who work from home or who work in offices but are in groups of 3 or fewer people. My budget for a videoconferencing system is a few hundred dollars per person. Skype is not nearly good enough. And I haven't seen a consumer webcam that is good enough either. Does such a solution exist? I'm looking to collaborate both with people who are close by (in the same city but not in the same room) and far away (on different continents).

• Single Form with Multiple Dynamic Buttons

  I've spent hours/days trying to figure this out and now I'm completely perplexed so I thought I'd give stackoverflow a try. I'm (a newb) working in Java/JSP using Eclipse hosting on Google App Engine trying to develop an app for a volunteer organization I'm a member of. Rather than embarrass myself by showing my current code I'd love just a nudge in the right direction. I have a form (which doubles as a report basically) showing "people" grouped under the "task" they are currently working on. I would like to select multiple people from multiple tasks and reassign them to another task e.g. Bill and Jane are Gardening, Jeff is Painting. I want to select Jane and Jeff (all people have an associated checkbox in the form) and re-assign them to Sweeping (which is a task on the form but has no people assigned to it yet). Ideally, the re-assignment to Sweeping would be via a Sweeping button (each task would have a dynamically-created task button) that would pass the "Sweeping" value to a servlet along with an array or list of people whose checkbox has been checked. The servlet would handle the request (creating an Assignment "object/entity" with timeStamp, personId, taskId) and then re-direct back to the form/report which would then repaint with the current tasks/people generated from the Assignments class in the datastore. All the tasks are user-defined and retrieved from the database when building the form. Ditto the people. I've been trying to keep the jsp for presentation and the servlets for the processing but I'm no purist and would just like to get unstuck. Many thanks in advance for your assistance.

  I might be doing this wrong, if I am, let me know, but I'm curious if the following is possible: I have a class that holds a number of dictionaries, each of which pairs names to a different set of objects of a given class. For example: items = {"ball" : ItemInstance1, "sword" : ItemInstance2} people = {"Jerry" : PersonInstance1, "Bob" : PersonInstance2, "Jill" : PersonInstance3} My class would then hold the current items and people that are availible, and these would be subject to change as the state changes: Class State: def __init__(self, items, people): self.items = items self.people = people I would like to define a iter() and next() method such that it iterates through all of the values in its attributes. My first question is whether or not this is possible. If it is, will it be able to support a situation as follows: I define items and people as above then: state = State(items, people) for names, thing in state: print name + " is " + thing.color items[cheese] = ItemInstance3 for names, thing in state: print name + " weighs " + thing.weight While I feel like this would be usefull in the code I have, I don't know if it's either possible or the right approach. Everything I've read about user defined iterators has suggested that each instance of them is one use only.

Over the past four years I was a member of two web development firms' small QA teams dedicated to testing the deployment of websites for national/international non profits, governmental organizations, and for profit business, to name a few: -Brookings Institution -Senate -Tyco Electronics -Blue Cross/Blue Shield -National Geographic -Discover Channel I have a very strong understanding of the: -SDLC -STLC of bugs and website deployment/development -Use Case & Test Case development In March of this year, my last firm downsized and lost my job as a QA tester. I have been networking and doing a very detailed job search, but have had a very difficult time getting my next job within the QA industry, even with my background as a manual black box QA tester in the website development context. My direct question to all of you: What are some ways I can be more competitive and get hired? Options that could get me competitive: Should I go back to school and learn some more 'hard' skills in website development and client side technologies, e.g.: -HTML -CSS -JavaScript Learn programming: -PHP -C# -Ruby -SQL -Python -Perl -?? Get Certified as a QA Tester, there are a countless numbers of programs to become a Certified Tester. Most, if not all jobs, being advertised now require Automated Testing experience, in: -QTP -Loadrunner -Selenium -ETC. Should I learn, Automated testing skills, via a paid course, or teach myself? --Learn scripting languages to understand the automated testing process better? Become a Certified "Project Management Professional" (PMP) to prove to hiring managers that I 'get' the project development life cycle? At the end of the day I need to be competitive and get hired as a QA tester and want to build upon my skills within the QA web development field. How should I do this, without reinventing the wheel? • Technical development decision for my newly established software company

  I have a new software company where I am planning to develop CRM system. So I have settled down on the technological approach I am going to use:- I will use an open source Java-based CRM engine. I will use a third party reporting tool named JasperReports for providing reports capabilities for the CRM. I will develop the interface and any customization which the customer might ask for using asp.net mvc framework since my knowledge and experience are based on asp.net. And I will use the CRM API to integrate my asp.net web application with the Java-based CRM. I have developed a simple demo which integrate these three main components (CRM engine, asp.net application and the reporting tool) and they worked well. But I am afraid of the following risk that I might face if I go with the above approach: I should hire developers with different skills and experience: Developers with Java skills to be able to modify the Java-based CRM and writing plug-ins -when needed- to extend the CRM capabilities. Other developers with asp.net skills to be able to build the application such as application forms, the portal from where users will be able to start the CRM processes, searching capabilities, etc. So might the above point raise some risks when I start hiring a new team and start building the CRM application, OR I am on the right track at this early stage?

• Public Speaking in software development.

  Greetings my fellow cubicle dwellers. I've found my role gradually change from "feature-maintainer" to "feature-developer". While much of the former would consist of fixing and/or updating an existing feature (and quietly grumbling about it's implementation with complete naiveté), in this new role I find: Have to communicate with immediate management to define the development requirements to turnaround the new feature Have to communicate with design to determine the user requirements of the new feature Have to communicate with QA to determine test sets for the new feature, as well as it's current state during development. Have to communicate with producers/project-managers to define remaining turnaround time as well as updates in development requirements. and finally, have to occasionally communicate with upper-management to defend the new feature and demonstrate it's minimized risk to the upcoming release. The last item is key here, and this took me a couple occasions to completely realize. In all, though, it becomes very apparent that communication skills ARE important, even or especially as such for developers who feel they 'own' the feature they're working on. All of this said, I recognize it's importance and would like to improve my skills in this area further. I enjoy one-on-one communication but find I tend to stutter a bit when speaking to any group larger than a few people I know well. Where can I find good resources to improve my own communication skills?

• Migration of PowerBuilder application to multiplatform

  I developed a client/server application with PowerBuilder in the past for medical clinics and done maintenance for it until now. Now, some clients are asking me to develop a release for Mac/Linux and need some advice about what programming language/technology is best suited for it and the learning curve. It’s not a very very big program but I’m the only developer and have done it in my spare time. PowerBuilder is very productive for this kind of projects (database centric), but it’s not multiplatform and it’s hard to sell PowerBuilder application now days (web, .NET, java sells a lot better with his marketing). My programming skills: - I studied C and C++ in the past (university) but never used it on real projects - Have some Java experience but not in desktop applications - Some experience with Ruby on Rails for web projects - Good skills with PowerBuilder and C# (.NET) (there are my main developing languages) My first dilemma is if I change the desktop application to a web interface, but I think the user will lose some user-experience, and some doctors don’t have a clinic (they are alone at home with my software). I think installing a web application (with webserver) for one user will be overwhelming. If I continue developing desktop application, what is at the moment a good framework/toolset to learn having my skills? Somebody has had similar experiences? A lot of thanks

• Moving From IT to Embedded software Developing

  i worked for two years at a channel station, managing various Types of tasks, varying from printers installation, software solution, down to managing and maintaining server automation, to be honest, i always been enthusiastic about programming, i studied at some affordable college and finished my IT path successfully, my graduation project was in C# ADO.NET couple of years ago. Obviously it was so much of a beginner spaghetti code than a well furnished code. I also had the chance; after leaving the IT career, to study about some ASP.NET MVC and web apps development. I have rookie level of coding skills due to the poor level of education i endured, and sufficient resources. Currently i m working as a trainee in a newly opened embedded software development company, that is being said, i am, as i sound, have a little idea about the algorithms included, as i was reading for the past couple of days, embedded system development requires more strict coding skills, including memory management, CPU optimization according to its architect, and couple of other tricks regarding the display, and power management if mobile.. etc. My question is, What type of Algorithms am i supposed to use in such cases, as i mentioned before, i am really enthusiastic about learning programming skills and algorithms related to embedded systems and programming languages, including C/C++, Java, C#, and some EC++ if still operational.

  After working extensively an internet startup in a marketing positions, I've decided to wade into the entrepreneurship pool with a startup of my own. The only problem: I don't have any particular technical skills to speak of. Although I can find a technical co-founder, I'd rather not be the stereotypical 'business guy' drumming his fingers on the desk and asking 'how much longer?' as my technical co-founder codes away. I would like to understand code and what's happening in the backend, even if I don't end up being anything more than a 'passable' programmer. With this in mind, which language should I try to learn first? For the record, I'm quite proficient with HTML, CSS, and a bit of JavaScript. I have some familiarity with PHP because I've toyed around with WordPress a lot, but my knowledge is limited at best. My math skills are quite strong. I took some advanced calculus courses in college since I've always enjoyed the subject. While my goals are to learn web development, I wouldn't mind learning some hardcore object oriented programming skills in C or Java as well.

I code almost exclusively in Ruby/Rails, PHP/CodeIgniter, SQL, and JavaScript. I've slowly gained proficiency with Git. Roughly half the time I am architecting/coding, and half the time I am pounding out HTML/CSS for static brochureware sites. I'd like to make more more money while doing more challenging/interesting work, but I don't know where to start. I have an excellent academic record (math major with many CS credits, 3.9+ GPA), GRE scores, and recommendations, so I am confident that I could be admitted to a great CS master's program. On the other hand, there is the tuition and opportunity cost to consider. I feel like there are a number of practical languages/tools/skills worth knowing that I could teach myself - shell scripting, .NET, Python, Node.js, MongoDB, natural language processing techniques, etc. That said, it's one thing to read about a subject and another thing to have experience with it, which structured coursework provides. So, on to the concrete questions: What programming skills/knowledge should I develop to increase my earning potential and make me competitive for more interesting jobs? Will a master's degree in CS from a top school help me develop the above skills/knowledge, and if so, is it preferable to self-study (possibly for other reasons, e.g., the degree's value as a credential)?

• 25 years old and considering a career change...possible? practical?

  Hi all, I'm new to this site and new to programming as well. I've spent some time going through an intro cs book that uses python as the language of choice. I find the exercises interesting and engaging and I generally have had a favorable experience programming so far. I've gone through some of the basics with python like writing simple programs, basics of GUIs, manipulating strings, lists, defining functions, etc. And I've always loved technology. Although I've never done any real hardcore programming yet, I was inclined to building websites from a very young age but I never really developed my skills. Now, the thing is I'm 25, I have my bacholors in environmental studies and two masters degrees in urban planning and landscape architecture respectively. I know, it would be quite a departure to pursue a career in programming at this point. Currently, I'm working as a geographic information systems intern. I've taken some GIS classes and have a lot of experience with making maps, doing spatial analysis etc. So what I'm thinking is maybe I can learn some solid programming skills and apply these skills in the field of GIS. From what I've seen, .net languages are the norm in this arena. Could you perhaps provide some guidance to me in terms of what languages I should focus on or courses I should take at this point? What about for building web mapping applications? Also, I was thinking about getting a certificate in programming from a university extension program. Do you think it would be worth it? And furthermore, do you think potential employers would be interested in hiring someone like me (once I get a couple of languages down pretty well) as an intern or in an entry level position? I'll be living in the bay area so I feel that there should be decent opportunities even though I don't have a b.s. in cs.
