  • firefox addons and their silly news tabs

    - by jettero
Something like 30% of the addons I have in firefox update every other week and feel the need to pop open a tab about how awesome they are and all the cool things they changed. I just don't care at all and I'm very annoyed by these news tabs. When firefox opens, I want to see my home page. I've been looking for an addon to disable or kill them before I even have to look at them. Rather like addblock-for-addons. Short of finding a plugin that disables them, I'm seeking information about common interfaces so I can try to figure it out on my own. I'm wondering if I could do it in greasemonkey somehow. For example, is there something common about the url for the tabs?

  • PHP product recommendations

    - by David
I'm building up an online store written in PHP. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for open source (or otherwise) product recommendation plugins? Ideally I'd like something that stores all its information locally on my server, and can provide good recommendations of products based on previous purchases and clicks. Any hints appreciated!

  • PHP: Writing non-english characters to XML - encoding problem

    - by Dean
Hello, I wrote a small PHP script to edit the site news XML file. I used DOM to manipulate the XML (Loading, writing, editing). It works fine when writing English characters, but when non-English characters are written, PHP throws an error when trying to load the file. If I manually type non-English characters into the file - it's loaded perfectly fine, but if PHP writes the non-English characters the encoding goes wrong, although I specified the utf-8 encoding. Any help is appreciated. Errors: Warning: DOMDocument::load() [domdocument.load]: Entity 'times' not defined in filepath Warning: DOMDocument::load() [domdocument.load]: Input is not proper UTF-8, indicate encoding ! Bytes: 0x91 0x26 0x74 0x69 in filepath Here are the functions responsible for loading and saving the file (self-explanatory): function get_tags_from_xml(){ // Load news entries from XML file for display $errors = Array(); if(!$xml_file = load_news_file()){ // Load file // String indicates error presence $errors = "file not found"; return $errors; } $taglist = $xml_file->getElementsByTagName("text"); return $taglist; } function set_news_lang(){ // Sets the news language global $news_lang; if($_POST["news-lang"]){ $news_lang = htmlentities($_POST["news-lang"]); } elseif($_GET["news-lang"]){ $news_lang = htmlentities($_GET["news-lang"]); } else{ $news_lang = "he"; } } function load_news_file(){ // Load XML news file for proccessing, depending on language global $news_lang; $doc = new DOMDocument('1.0','utf-8'); // Create new XML document $doc->load("news_{$news_lang}.xml"); // Load news file by language $doc->formatOutput = true; // Nicely format the file return $doc; } function save_news_file($doc){ // Save XML news file, depending on language global $news_lang; $doc->saveXML($doc->documentElement); $doc->save("news_{$news_lang}.xml"); } Here is the code for writing to XML (add news): <?php ob_start()?> <?php include("include/xml_functions.php")?> <?php include("../include/functions.php")?> <?php get_lang();?> <?php //TODO: ADD USER AUTHENTICATION! if(isset($_POST["news"]) && isset($_POST["news-lang"])){ set_news_lang(); $news = htmlentities($_POST["news"]); $xml_doc = load_news_file(); $news_list = $xml_doc->getElementsByTagName("text"); // Get all existing news from file $doc_root_element = $xml_doc->getElementsByTagName("news")->item(0); // Get the root element of the new XML document $new_news_entry = $xml_doc->createElement("text",$news); // Create the submited news entry $doc_root_element->appendChild($new_news_entry); // Append submited news entry $xml_doc->appendChild($doc_root_element); save_news_file($xml_doc); header("Location: /cpanel/index.php?lang={$lang}&news-lang={$news_lang}"); } else{ header("Location: /cpanel/index.php?lang={$lang}&news-lang={$news_lang}"); } ?> <?php ob_end_flush()?>

  • In Perl, how can I iterate over the Cartesian product of multiple sets?

    - by nubie2
I want to do permutation in Perl. For example I have three arrays: ["big", "tiny", "small"] and then I have ["red", "yellow", "green"] and also ["apple", "pear", "banana"]. How do I get: ["big", "red", "apple"] ["big", "red", "pear"] ..etc.. ["small", "green", "banana"] I understand this is called permutation. But I am not sure how to do it. Also I don't know how many arrays I can have. There may be three or four, so I don't want to do nested loop.

  • PC hangs and reboots from time to time

    - by Bevor
Hello, I have a very strange problem: Since I have my new PC, I have always had problems with it. From time to time the computer freezes for some seconds and suddendly reboots by itself. I've had this problem since Ubuntu 9.10. The same with 10.04 and 10.10. That's why I don't think it's a software failure because the problem persist too long. It doesn't have anything to do with what I'm doing at this time. Sometimes I listen to music, sometimes I only use Firefox, sometimes I'm running 2 or 3 VMs, sometimes I watch DVD. So it's not isolatable. I could freeze once a day or once a week. I put the PC to the vendor twice(!). The first time they changed my power supply but the problem persisted. The second time they told me that they made some heavy performance tests 50 hours long but they didn't find anything. (How can that be that I have daily freezes with normal usage). The vendor didn't check the hard discs because they used their own disc with Windows. (So they never checked the Linux installation). Yesterday I made some intensive hard disc scans with "SMART" but no errors were found. I ran memtest for 3 times but no errors found. I already had this problem in my old flat, so I doubt that I has something to do with current fluctuation. I already tried another electrical socket and changed to connector strip but the problem persists. At the moment I removed 2 of the RAMs (2x 2GB). In all I have 6GB, 2x2GB and 2x1GB. Could this difference maybe be a problem? Here is a list of my components. I hope that anybody find something I didn't think about yet. • Incorporating Sound in UPK 3.6.1

    - by [email protected]
UPK 3.6.1 now offers developers the ability to easily record and edit sound from right within the UPK Developer. Sound can be recorded in either the concept pane or individual topic frames. A developer can record sound at the same time they're capturing a transaction or by adding sound after recording, on a frame-by-frame basis. The sound editor in UPK 3.6.1 allows developers to perform a variety of editing functions: play, insert sound or silence, delete, adjust amplification, and import or export sound files, just to name a few. Internally, Oracle Product Management is using this functionality to create "UPK-casts" for enablement purposes. We do this by capturing PowerPoint slides, then adding sound, allowing us to create our own recorded "webcasts". Because we develop these independently, we control the content and have more flexibility to edit the content as needed. Whether it's a change to a single frame or an entire topic, we can react quickly, providing our users with the most up-to-date information. And you don't need expensive equipment or a sound studio to achieve good sound quality. Depending on how your end users are accessing your content, a $35 head set can do the trick. Just be sure to follow the best practices for sound recording as outlined in the UPK documentation. Tip: we've found that we get the best results with sound consistency when we record all the sound for a topic at one sitting. UPK 3.6.1 is now available for download from Oracle E-Delivery. Upgrade today and have fun creating more robust, engaging content for your users! - Karen Rihs, Oracle UPK & Tutor Outbound Product Management

  • Closed-loop Recommendation Engines: Analyst Insight report on Oracle Real-Time Decisions (RTD)

    - by Mike.Hallett(at)Oracle-BI&EPM
In November 2011, Helena Schwenk of MWD Advisors, published her analysis on Oracle Real-Time Decisions.  She summarizes as follows: "In contrast to other popular approaches to implementing predictive analytics, RTD focuses on learning from each interaction and using these insights to adjust what is presented, offered or displayed to a customer. Likewise its capabilities for optimising decisions within the context of specific business goals and a report-driven framework for assessing the performance of models and decisions make it a strong contender for organisations that want to continuously improve decision making as part of a customer experience marketing, e-commerce optimisation and operational process efficiency initiative." This is an outstanding report to share with a prospect or client as it goes into great detail about the product and its capabilities.  It also highlights the differences in Oracle's Real-Time Decisions product vs. other closed loop recommendation engines. I encourage you to share this report with your clients and prospects. It can be downloaded directly from here - MWD Advisors Vendor Profile: Oracle Real-Time Decisions. (expires in November 2012) Highlights: "At the core of RTD lies a learning engine that combines business rules and adaptive predictive models to deliver recommendations to operational systems while simultaneously learning from experiences." "While closed-loop recommendation engines are becoming more prevalent... there are a number of features that distinguish RTD: It makes its decisions in the context of the business objectives, such as maximising customer revenue or reducing service costs Its support for operational integration offers organisations some flexibility in how they implement the offering."

  • If the bug is 5+ years old, then is it a feature?

    - by Job
Allow me to add details: I work at an institutional place with many coders, testers, QA analysts, product owners, etc. and here is something that bugs me: We have been able to sell crappy (albeit pretty functional) software for over a decade. It has many features and the product is competitive, but there are a some serious bugs out there, as well as thousands of "paper cuts" - little annoyances that clients need to get used to. It pains me to look at some of the things because I firmly believe that if computers do not help to make our lives easier, then we should not use them. I have confidence in my colleagues - they are smart, able, and can improve things when the focus is on doing that. But, it can be difficult to file bugs against some old functionality without seeing them closed or forgotten. "It worked like that for ions" is a typical answer. Also, when QA does regression, they tend to look for anything that is different as much as anything that does not seem right. So, a fix to an old problem can be written up as a bug, because "it has been like that before even my time". The young coder in me thinks: rewrite this freaking thing! As someone who had the opportunity to be close to sales, clients, I want to give a benefit of a doubt to this approach. I am interested in your opinion/experience as well. Please try to consider risk, cost-to-benefit, and other non-technical factors.

  • Database schema for Product Properties

    - by Chemosh
As so many people I'm looking for a Products /Product Properties database schema. I'm using Ruby on Rails and (Thinking) Sphinx for faceted searches. Requirements: Adding new product types and their options should not require a change to the database schema Support faceted searches using Sphinx. Solutions I've come across: (See Bill Karwin's answer) Option 1: Single Table Inheritance Not an option really. The table would contain way to many columns. Option 2: Class Table Inheritance Ruby on Rails caches the database schema on start-up which means a restart whenever a new type of product is introduced. If you have a size able product catalog this could mean hundreds of tables. Option 3: Serialized LOB Kills being able to do faceted searches without heavy application logic. Option 4: Entity-Attribute-Value For testing purposes, EAV worked fine. However it could quickly become a mess and a maintenance hell as you add more and more options (e.g. when an option increase the prices or delivery time). What option should I go with? What other solutions are out there? Is there a silver bullet (ha) I overlooked?

  • Disk Drive not working

    - by user287681
The CD/DVD drive on my sisters' (I'm helping her shift from Win. XP (now officially deprecated by Microsoft) to Ubuntu) system. Now, it may end up being a failed attempt, all together (Almost the whole last year (when she's been on XP) the disk drive hasn't (not even powering on) been working.), I just want to make sure I've explored every remote possibility. Because I figure, "Huh, now that I've got Ubuntu running, instead of XP, that (just) might make a difference.". I have tried using the sudo lshw command in the terminal, to (seemingly) no avil, but, who knows, you might be able to make something out of it. • URL routing similar to Facebook (related to AJAX and the URL)

    - by Guilherme Cardoso
In this article i'm gonna show you how i do when i have to update some content with AJAX and i have to change the URL. First, let's see an example to understand it better. If the user is reading a News with Id 1 and he clicked on another News with Id 2, if we update the content with AJAX the user is now reading the News Id 2 but the URL remains the same, for example: http://localhost/News/Read/1 Now let's see another example from Facebook. If i'm reading my profile and i click on Photos, Facebook updates it with AJAX and the URL switch to: http://www.facebook.com/guilhermegeek#!/guilhermegeek?sk=photos If we enter on that URL, it's mapped to: http://www.facebook.com/guilhermegeek?sk=photos The trick here is the parameters that we use after the #!. Those parameters are never sent to the server side, so we handle them on the client side (javascript). In the example of Facebook, he receives my profile name (guilhermegeek) and the action is to read photos. A few time ago i've written an article in my Portuguese blog explaining how to use an alternative to clients with javascript disabled. Like this: <a onclick="javascript:ReadNews(id);" href="#!News/Read/@id/">Title</a> When the user enter the link of that news, my function Read(); fills the News in the page. Then, i add the #!News/Read/@id/ to my URL. It's gonna stay something like this: http://localhost/News/Read/1#!News/Read/2 As i explained before, the News that the user is reading has the Id 2.The next step is to use javascript to check if the URL that the user typed has other News Id, because if we enter on the above URL our controller will get the Id 1 (everything after to the # isn't sent to the server side). $(document).ready(function () {             var h = window.location.hash;             if (h != null) {                 var parts = window.location.href.split('#!');                 if (parts.length > 1) {                     window.location.replace("http://localhost/" + parts[1]);                 }             }    }); It's pretty simple. I'm cutting everything after the #!, then i redirect the user to a new page. So, it's gonna stay:http://localhost/News/Read/2

  • wget crawling search results of news website

    - by kiltek
I am trying to crawl the search results of a news website using wget. The name of the website is www.voanews.com. After typing in my search keyword and clicking search, it proceeds to the results. Then i can specify a "to" and a "from"-date and hit search again. After this the URL becomes: http://www.voanews.com/search/?st=article&k=mykeyword&df=10%2F01%2F2013&dt=09%2F20%2F2013&ob=dt#article and the actual content of the results is what i want to download. To achieve this I created the following wget-command: wget --reject=js,txt,gif,jpeg,jpg \ --accept=html \ --user-agent=My-Browser \ --recursive --level=2 \ www.voanews.com/search/?st=article&k=germany&df=08%2F21%2F2013&dt=09%2F20%2F2013&ob=dt#article Unfortunately, the crawler doesn't download the search results. It only gets into the upper link bar, which contains the "Home,USA,Africa,Asia,..." links and saves the articles they link to. It seems like he crawler doesn't check the search result links at all. What am I doing wrong and how can I modify the wget command to download the results search list links (and of course the sites they link to) only ?

  • How do I resolve the error "Binding already being used by a product other than IIS"

    - by magnifico
I have an SSL cert with its own unique IP address on a 2008 R2 server. I have created a basic website using IIS Manager, with a file called “Hello.html” in the root. When trying to add an https binding I receive the following error after choosing my certificate: This binding is already being used by a product other than IIS. If you continue you might overwrite the existing certificate for this IP Address:Port combnation. Do you want to use this binding anyway?" I click Yes to this prompt and the binding is created. When I try to retrieve my file using the server’s own browser, the request times out. I have another server which has a shared configuration with this one, and it works fine. Does anyone have any suggestions how to find out which application may be using this binding other than IIS, and how to resolve?

  • WMIC returns error when querying product

    - by Stu
I'm trying to automate the installation of an MSI on my server, however before the installation can go ahead I need to uninstall the previous version from the server. Searching on the internet I've found that WMIC is the tool required but there seems to be a problem with the setup of WMI on the server. Running the following command gives errors: command promptwmic then inside the tool /trace:on product get name This returns a long string of successes and one failure: FAIL: IEnumWbemClassObject->Next(WBEM_INFINITE, 1, -, -) Line: 396 File: d:\nt\admin\wmi\wbem\tools\wmic\execengine.cpp Node - ENTECHORELDEV ERROR: Code = 0x80041010 Description = The specified class is not valid. Facility = WMI I'm trying to run this on a standard install of Windows Server 2003 R2 with administrator privelages. Thanks Stu

  • Product Recommendation: Good job scheduler for windows servers?

    - by Bret Fisher
Looking for a mostly-GUI tool that is low cost (less then $1k, but not required) and allows you to create scheduled tasks and jobs without writing vbscript, batch files, or powershell. Something simple that speaks SMB/CIFS, SMTP, LDAP, etc. for such things as "delete some files based on a list of folders from this text file" or "disable all users with expired accounts" or "delete all disabled users not in this AD group". I've seen some of the big multi-OS enterprise task automation systems and they just look way overkill. We're a windows-only shop, Server 2003 or newer and there's got to be a simple non-agent based product that is drag-n-drop for some of this basic automation. Today we use all three languages mentioned above, and the scripts are not as reliable as a workflow-based-tool would be. Thanks.

  • Encryption Product Keys : Public and Private key encryption

    - by Aran Mulholland
I need to generate and validate product keys and have been thinking about using a public/private key system. I generate our product keys based on a client name (which could be a variable length string) a 6 digit serial number. It would be good if the product key would be of a manageable length (16 characters or so) I need to encrypt them at the base and then distrubute the decryption/validation system. As our system is written in managed code (.NET) we dont want to distribute the encryption system, only the decryption. I need a public private key seems a good way to do this, encrypt with the one key that i keep and distribute the other key needed for decrpytion/verification. What is an appropriate mechanism to do this with the above requirements?
