  • How to empty a socket in python?

    - by luc
I need to empty the data on a socket (making sure that there is nothing to receive). Unfortunately, there is no function for this in the python socket module. I've implemented something this way: def empty_socket(sock): """remove the data present on the socket""" input = [sock] while 1: inputready, o, e = select.select(input,[],[], 0.0) if len(inputready)==0: break for s in inputready: s.recv(1) What do you think? Is there a better way to do that? Update: I don't want to change the socket timeout. What's why i prefer a select to a read. Update: The original question was using the 'flush' term. It seems that 'empty' is a better term. Update - 2010-02-27 : I've noticed a bug after when the pair has closed. The inputready is always filled with the sockets. I fixed that by adding a maximum number of loops. Is there a better fix?

  • how to escape slashes in perl command in unix script?

    - by understack
end_date=$(date +"%m/%d/%Y") /usr/bin/perl -pi -e "s/_end_date_/${end_date}/g" filename I want to replace string '_end_date_' with current date. Since current date has slashes in it(yes I want the slashes), I need to escape them. How can I do this? I've tried several ways like replacing slashes with "\/" using sed and perl itself but it didn't work. Finally I used 'cut' to break date in 3 parts and escaped slashes but this solution doesn't look good. Any better solution?

  • Read from socket

    - by Alberto
I need to read from an AF_UNIX socket to a buffer using the function read from C, but I don't know the buffer size. I think the best way is to read N bytes until the read returns 0 (no more writers in the socket). Is this correct? Is there a way to guess the size of the buffer being written on the socket? I was thinking that a socket is a special file. Opening the file in binary mode and getting the size would help me in knowing the correct size to give to the buffer? I'm a very new to C, so please keep that in mind.

  • How can I set a default value when incorrect/invalid input is entered in Unix?

    - by user2889968
i want to set the value of inputLineNumber to 20. I tried checking if no value is given by user by [[-z "$inputLineNumber"]] and then setting the value by inputLineNumber=20. The code seems to be working correct when no value is given but I also receive ./t.sh: [-z: not found as message on the console. Is there some way to not print this message. Here's my full script as well. #!/bin/sh cat /dev/null>copy.txt echo "Please enter the sentence you want to search:" read "inputVar" echo "Please enter the name of the file in which you want to search:" read "inputFileName" echo "Please enter the number of lines you want to copy:" read "inputLineNumber" [[-z "$inputLineNumber"]] || inputLineNumber=20 cat /dev/null > copy.txt for N in `grep -n $inputVar $inputFileName | cut -d ":" -f1` do LIMIT=`expr $N + $inputLineNumber` sed -n $N,${LIMIT}p $inputFileName >> copy.txt echo "-----------------------" >> copy.txt done cat copy.txt

  • Multiplayer mobile games and coping with high latency

    - by liortal
I'm currently researching regarding a design for an online (realtime) mobile multiplayer game. As such, i'm taking into consideration that latencies (lag) is going to be high (perhaps higher than PC/consoles). I'd like to know if there are ways to overcome this or minimize the issues of high latency? The model i'll be using is peer-to-peer (using Photon cloud to broadcast messages to all other players). How do i deal with a scenario where a message about a local object's state at time t will only get to other players at *t + HUGE_LAG* ?

  • C Minishell Command Expansion Printing Gibberish

    - by Optimus_Pwn
I'm writing a unix minishell in C, and am at the point where I'm adding command expansion. What I mean by this is that I can nest commands in other commands, for example: $> echo hello $(echo world! ... $(echo and stuff)) hello world! ... and stuff I think I have it working mostly, however it isn't marking the end of the expanded string correctly, for example if I do: $> echo a $(echo b $(echo c)) a b c $> echo d $(echo e) d e c See it prints the c, even though I didn't ask it to. Here is my code: msh.c - http://pastebin.com/sd6DZYwB expand.c - http://pastebin.com/uLqvFGPw I have a more code, but there's a lot of it, and these are the parts that I'm having trouble with at the moment. I'll try to tell you the basic way I'm doing this. Main is in msh.c, here it gets a line of input from either the commandline or a shellfile, and then calls processline (char *line, int outFD, int waitFlag), where line is the line we just got, outFD is the file descriptor of the output file, and waitFlag tells us whether or not we should wait if we fork. When we call this from main we do it like this: processline (buffer, 1, 1); In processline, we allocate a new line: char expanded_line[EXPANDEDLEN]; We then call expand, in expand.c: expand(line, expanded_line, EXPANDEDLEN); In expand, we copy the characters literally from line to expanded_line until we find a $(, which then calls: static int expCmdOutput(char *orig, char *new, int *oldl_ind, int *newl_ind) orig is line, and new is expanded line. oldl_ind and newl_ind are the current positions in the line and expanded line, respectively. Then we pipe, and recursively call processline, passing it the nested command(for example, if we had "echo a $(echo b)", we would pass processline "echo b"). This is where I get confused, each time expand is called, is it allocating a new chunk of memory EXPANDEDLEN long? If so, this is bad because I'll run out of stack room really quickly(in the case of a hugely nested commandline input). In expand I insert a null character at the end of the expanded string, so why is it printing past it? If you guys need any more code, or explanations, just ask. Secondly, I put the code in pastebin because there's a ton of it, and in my experience people don't like it when I fill up several pages with code. Thanks.

  • What can cause a spontaneous EPIPE error without either end calling close() or crashing?

    - by Hongli
I have an application that consists of two processes (let's call them A and B), connected to each other through Unix domain sockets. Most of the time it works fine, but some users report the following behavior: A sends a request to B. This works. A now starts reading the reply from B. B sends a reply to A. The corresponding write() call returns an EPIPE error, and as a result B close() the socket. However, A did not close() the socket, nor did it crash. A's read() call returns 0, indicating end-of-file. A thinks that B prematurely closed the connection. Users have also reported variations of this behavior, e.g.: A sends a request to B. This works partially, but before the entire request is sent A's write() call returns EPIPE, and as a result A close() the socket. However B did not close() the socket, nor did it crash. B reads a partial request and then suddenly gets an EOF. The problem is I cannot reproduce this behavior locally at all. I've tried OS X and Linux. The users are on a variety of systems, mostly OS X and Linux. Things that I've already tried and considered: Double close() bugs (close() is called twice on the same file descriptor): probably not as that would result in EBADF errors, but I haven't seen them. Increasing the maximum file descriptor limit. One user reported that this worked for him, the rest reported that it did not. What else can possibly cause behavior like this? I know for certain that neither A nor B close() the socket prematurely, and I know for certain that neither of them have crashed because both A and B were able to report the error. It is as if the kernel suddenly decided to pull the plug from the socket for some reason.

  • How to determine an invalid CFSocket

    - by Chris
Hi Everyone, how can I avoid, to send data via CFSocketSendData to an invalid socket? I've try to determine the socket state with CFSockerIsValid, but this method returns still true when the other side is close. So how can I determine if the socket is valid? In order so avoid Errors. Thank Chris

  • udp can not receive any data

Here is my code Socket sck = new Socket(AddressFamily.InterNetwork, SocketType.Dgram, ProtocolType.Udp); sck.Bind(new IPEndPoint(IPAddress.Any, 0)); // Broadcast to find server string msg = "Imlookingforaserver:" + udp_listen_port; byte[] sendBytes4 = Encoding.ASCII.GetBytes(msg); IPEndPoint groupEP = new IPEndPoint(IPAddress.Parse("255.255.255.255"), server_port); sck.SetSocketOption(SocketOptionLevel.Socket, SocketOptionName.Broadcast, 1); sck.SendTo(sendBytes4, groupEP); //Wait response from server Socket sck2 = new Socket(AddressFamily.InterNetwork, SocketType.Dgram, ProtocolType.Udp); sck2.Bind(new IPEndPoint(IPAddress.Any, udp_listen_port)); byte[] buffer = new byte[128]; EndPoint remoteEndPoint = new IPEndPoint(IPAddress.Any, udp_listen_port); sck2.ReceiveFrom(buffer, ref remoteEndPoint); //<<< I never pass this line I use above code to try find a server. First I broadcast a message and then I wait for a response from the server. A test I made with the server written in C++ and running in Windows Vista, client written in C# and run on the same machine with server. Problem is: The server can receive message which client broadcast, but client can not receive anything from server. I try to write a client with C++ and it work like a charm, I think my problem is in C# client.

  • How to handle activity life cycle involving sockets in Android?

    - by Henrik
Hello all, I have an Android activity which in turn starts a thread. In the thread I open a persistent TCP socket connection. When the socket connects to the server dynamic data is downloaded. The thread sends messages using Handler-class to the activity when data has been received. Now if the user happens to switch from portrait to landscape mode the activity gets an onDestroy call. At this moment I close the socket and stop the thread. When Android has switched landscape mode it calls onCreate yet again and I have to do a socket re-connect. Also, all of the data the activity received needs to be downloaded once more because the server does not have the ability to know what has been sent before, i.e. there is no "resume" feature. Thus the problem is that there is alot of data which is resent all the time when landscape mode is changed. What are my options here? Should I create a service which handles the socket traffic towards the server thus I always got all the data which the server has sent in the service. Or should I disable landscape mode all together perhaps? Or would my best bet be to rewrite my server which is a VERY BIG job :-) All input is welcome :-) / Henrik

  • Java: Efficiency of the readLine method of the BufferedReader and possible alternatives

    - by Luhar
We are working to reduce the latency and increase the performance of a process written in Java that consumes data (xml strings) from a socket via the readLine() method of the BufferedReader class. The data is delimited by the end of line separater (\n), and each line can be of a variable length (6KBits - 32KBits). Our code looks like: Socket sock = connection; InputStream in = sock.getInputStream(); BufferedReader inputReader = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(in)); ... do { String input = inputReader.readLine(); // Executor call to parse the input thread in a seperate thread }while(true) So I have a couple of questions: Will the inputReader.readLine() method return as soon as it hits the \n character or will it wait till the buffer is full? Is there a faster of picking up data from the socket than using a BufferedReader? What happens when the size of the input string is smaller than the size of the Socket's receive buffer? What happens when the size of the input string is bigger than the size of the Socket's receive buffer? I am getting to grips (slowly) with Java's IO libraries, so any pointers are much appreciated. Thank you!

  • saslauthd + PostFix producing password verification and authentication errors

    - by Aram Papazian
So I'm trying to setup PostFix while using SASL (Cyrus variety preferred, I was using dovecot earlier but I'm switching from dovecot to courier so I want to use cyrus instead of dovecot) but I seem to be having issues. Here are the errors I'm receiving: ==> mail.log <== Aug 10 05:11:49 crazyinsanoman postfix/smtpd[779]: warning: SASL authentication failure: Password verification failed Aug 10 05:11:49 crazyinsanoman postfix/smtpd[779]: warning: ipname[xx.xx.xx.xx]: SASL PLAIN authentication failed: authentication failure ==> mail.info <== Aug 10 05:11:49 crazyinsanoman postfix/smtpd[779]: warning: SASL authentication failure: Password verification failed Aug 10 05:11:49 crazyinsanoman postfix/smtpd[779]: warning: ipname[xx.xx.xx.xx]: SASL PLAIN authentication failed: authentication failure ==> mail.warn <== Aug 10 05:11:49 crazyinsanoman postfix/smtpd[779]: warning: SASL authentication failure: Password verification failed Aug 10 05:11:49 crazyinsanoman postfix/smtpd[779]: warning: ipname[xx.xx.xx.xx]: SASL PLAIN authentication failed: authentication failure I tried $testsaslauthd -u xxxx -p xxxx 0: OK "Success." So, I'm now at a loss... I have no idea where to go from here or what steps I need to do to get this working =/ Anyone have any ideas? EDIT: Here is the error that is coming from auth.log ... • eSata plugged into Sata socket via adaptor cable very slow

    - by Jon
Why would an external eSata Drive (xSonic with 500Gb notebook Hard Drive) run ok on a Silicon Image based PCI-E to eSata adaptor at about 35MB/s, But then run really slow when plugged into NForce4 Sata socket via cable? I have another version of the problem with Really slow 1MB/s!!! performance on a ASUS P5K Pro Motherboard with E8400 CPU. This time the same card is plugged into a PCI-E socket. The same eSata drive is plugged into the Esata port on the card. All this is running on Windows XP Pro 32bit. Any suggestions on how to diagnose the problems??

  • gunicorn + django + nginx unix://socket failed (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)

    - by user1068118
Running very high volume traffic on these servers configured with django, gunicorn, supervisor and nginx. But a lot of times I tend to see 502 errors. So I checked the nginx logs to see what error and this is what is recorded: [error] 2388#0: *208027 connect() to unix:/tmp/gunicorn-ourapp.socket failed (11: Resource temporarily unavailable) while connecting to upstream Can anyone help debug what might be causing this to happen? This is our nginx configuration: sendfile on; tcp_nopush on; tcp_nodelay off; listen 80 default_server; server_name imp.ourapp.com; access_log /mnt/ebs/nginx-log/ourapp-access.log; error_log /mnt/ebs/nginx-log/ourapp-error.log; charset utf-8; keepalive_timeout 60; client_max_body_size 8m; gzip_types text/plain text/xml text/css application/javascript application/x-javascript application/json; location / { proxy_pass http://unix:/tmp/gunicorn-ourapp.socket; proxy_pass_request_headers on; proxy_read_timeout 600s; proxy_connect_timeout 600s; proxy_redirect http://localhost/ http://imp.ourapp.com/; #proxy_set_header Host $host; #proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr; #proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for; #proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto $my_scheme; #proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Ssl $my_ssl; } We have configure Django to run in Gunicorn as a generic WSGI application. Supervisord is used to launch the gunicorn workers: home/user/virtenv/bin/python2.7 /home/user/virtenv/bin/gunicorn --config /home/user/shared/etc/gunicorn.conf.py daggr.wsgi:application This is what the gunicorn.conf.py looks like: import multiprocessing bind = 'unix:/tmp/gunicorn-ourapp.socket' workers = multiprocessing.cpu_count() * 3 + 1 timeout = 600 graceful_timeout = 40 Does anyone know where I can start digging to see what might be causing the problem? This is what my ulimit -a output looks like on the server: core file size (blocks, -c) 0 data seg size (kbytes, -d) unlimited scheduling priority (-e) 0 file size (blocks, -f) unlimited pending signals (-i) 59481 max locked memory (kbytes, -l) 64 max memory size (kbytes, -m) unlimited open files (-n) 50000 pipe size (512 bytes, -p) 8 POSIX message queues (bytes, -q) 819200 real-time priority (-r) 0 stack size (kbytes, -s) 8192 cpu time (seconds, -t) unlimited max user processes (-u) 1024 virtual memory (kbytes, -v) unlimited file locks (-x) unlimited

  • Unix domain socket firewall

    - by lagab
Hello, everyone. I've got a problem with my debian server. Probably there is some vulnerable script at my web-serser, which is running from www-data user. I also have samba with winbind installed, and samba is joined to windows domain. So, probably this vulnerable script allows hacker to bruteforce out domain controller through winbind unix domain socket. Actually I have lots of such lines at netstat -a output: unix 3 [ ] STREAM CONNECTED 509027 /var/run/samba/winbindd_privileged/pipe And our DC logs contain lots of recorded authentication attems from root or guest accounts. How can I restrict my apaches access to winbind? I had an idea to use some kind of firewall for IPC sockets. Is it possible?

  • Simplest way to expose UNIX mailboxes via IMAP or POP3 on RHEL 5.6

    - by db2
We've got a web server running RedHat Enterprise Linux 5.6, and it has all the usual local UNIX mailboxes. As is typical, the root mailbox gets all the cron output, logwatch results, etc. I'd like an easier way to keep an eye on this mailbox besides running mail via ssh. What should I install/enable to allow access to these system mailboxes via IMAP or POP3 with minimal fuss? Either protocol would be fine for what I'm doing, as I could then add it as an account in Outlook. A bit of searching led me to cyrus-imapd and dovecot, but it seems like they are meant for more serious mail hosting operations. Either they use their own mailbox system exclusively, or don't have a simple way of making the UNIX mailboxes available. If I'm wrong about that, then I'm fine with using either of them as long as I can get to the mailboxes of the existing accounts on the box.

  • SSH issues: Read from socket failed: Connection reset by peer

    - by nitins
I compiled OpenSSH_6.6p1 on one of our server. I am able login via SSH to the upgraded server. But I am not able to connect to other servers running OpenSSH_6.6p1 or OpenSSH_5.8 from this. While connecting I am getting an error as below. Read from socket failed: Connection reset by peer On the destination server in the logs, I am seeing it as below. sshd: fatal: Read from socket failed: Connection reset by peer [preauth] I tried specifying the cipher_spec [ ssh -c aes128-ctr destination-server ] as mentioned in here and was able to connect. How can configure ssh to use the cipher by default? Why is the cipher required here?

  • Determining End of Line Delimiter

    - by Michael Merchant
How do you verify what the delimiter for a file is? I'm using eclipse to edit a script file on my windows system that I use to deploy on my unix server. The script specifies file names and I'd like to be certain that eclipse is saving the files with unix end of line delimiters. I've set my preferences to use the Unix Line Delimiter on new files using: Window > Preferences > General > Workspace > "New text file line delimiter" And have changed my script file's line delimiter using. File -> Convert Line Delimiters To Is there a way (preferably with the eclipse IDE) to check that there is no "\r"?

  • Maximum number of inodes in a directory?

    - by Dr. UNIX
Is there a maximum number of inodes in a single directory? I have a directory of 2 million+ files and can't get an the ls command to work against that directory. So now I'm wondering if I've exceeded a limit on inodes in Linux. Is there a limit before a 2^64 numerical limit?

  • Socket php server not showing messages sent from android client

    - by Mj1992
Hi I am a newbie in these kind of stuff but here's what i want to do. I am trying to implement a chat application in which users will send their queries from the website and as soon as the messages are sent by the website users. It will appear in the android mobile application of the site owner who will answer their queries .In short I wanna implement a live chat. Now right now I am just simply trying to send messages from android app to php server. But when I run my php script from dreamweaver in chrome the browser keeps on loading and doesn't shows any output when I send message from the client. Sometimes it happened that the php script showed some outputs which I have sent from the android(client). But i don't know when it works and when it does not. So I want to show those messages in the php script as soon as I send those messages from client and vice versa(did not implemented the vice versa for client but help will be appreciated). Here's what I've done till now. php script: <?php set_time_limit (0); $address = '127.0.0.1'; $port = 1234; $sock = socket_create(AF_INET, SOCK_STREAM, 0); socket_bind($sock, $address, $port) or die('Could not bind to address'); socket_listen($sock); $client = socket_accept($sock); $welcome = "Roll up, roll up, to the greatest show on earth!\n? "; socket_write($client, $welcome, strlen($welcome)) or die("Could not send connect string\n"); do{ $input=socket_read($client,1024,1) or die("Could not read input\n"); echo "User Says: \n\t\t\t".$input; if (trim($input) != "") { echo "Received input: $input\n"; if(trim($input)=="END") { socket_close($spawn); break; } } else{ $output = strrev($input) . "\n"; socket_write($spawn, $output . "? ", strlen (($output)+2)) or die("Could not write output\n"); echo "Sent output: " . trim($output) . "\n"; } } while(true); socket_close($sock); echo "Socket Terminated"; ?> Android Code: public class ServerClientActivity extends Activity { private Button bt; private TextView tv; private Socket socket; private String serverIpAddress = "127.0.0.1"; private static final int REDIRECTED_SERVERPORT = 1234; @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); bt = (Button) findViewById(R.id.myButton); tv = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.myTextView); try { InetAddress serverAddr = InetAddress.getByName(serverIpAddress); socket = new Socket(serverAddr, REDIRECTED_SERVERPORT); } catch (UnknownHostException e1) { e1.printStackTrace(); } catch (IOException e1) { e1.printStackTrace(); } bt.setOnClickListener(new OnClickListener() { public void onClick(View v) { try { EditText et = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.EditText01); String str = et.getText().toString(); PrintWriter out = new PrintWriter(new BufferedWriter(new OutputStreamWriter(socket.getOutputStream())),true); out.println(str); Log.d("Client", "Client sent message"); } catch (UnknownHostException e) { tv.setText(e.getMessage()); e.printStackTrace(); } catch (IOException e) { tv.setText(e.getMessage()); e.printStackTrace(); } catch (Exception e) { tv.setText(e.getMessage()); e.printStackTrace(); } } }); } } I've just pasted the onclick button event code for Android.Edit text is the textbox where I am going to enter my text. The ip address and port are same as in php script.
