  • Can XNA Content Pipeline split one content file into several .xnb?

    Let's say I have an xml file which looks like this <Weapons> <Weapon> <Name>Pistol</Name> ... </Weapon> <Weapon> <Name>MachineGun</Name> ... </Weapon> </Weapons> Would it be possible to use a custom importer/writer/reader to create two files, Pistol.xnb and MachineGun.xnb which I can load individually with Content.Load()? While writing this I realized I could just import a Weapon[] list and split them up with a helper, but I'm still wondering if this is possible?

  • What is the primary use of Vertex Buffer Objects?

    From what I've read, it seems VBOs are purely for performance. I'm working on a very rudimentary learning project in lwjgl and I'm just trying to figure out what more advanced features of the library I should be delving into, and what their use is. My understanding is that VBOs allow a person to keep vertexes in VRAM while they aren't currently being drawn in a scene. In my case, I'm just drawing quads and performance probably isn't a concern at all, but I'm trying to piece together what's happening under the hood. If I'm drawing quads directly, I'm drawing from the CPU memory, correct? Also, if I'm not doing any checks for visibility, does that mean I'm rendering absolutely everything in the "scene", regardless of whether its in view? Are VBOs a way to store objects and only render what's needed?

  • How do I render from one render target to another?

    I have two render targets: a fake backbuffer; a special render target where I do all my rendering. a light render target; where I render my light fx. I'm sure I'm rendering correctly on both. The problem arises when I overlay the light render target onto the fake backbuffer by drawing a quad covering it: DxEngine.DrawSprite(0.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f, (float)DxEngine.GetWidth(), (float)DxEngine.GetHeight(), 0xFFFFFFFF, LightSurface->GetTexture()); Regardless of what's in the light target, nothing is rendered onto the other target. I tried clearing the light target with full-white or full-black, but still get nothing. Fake backbuffer created with Direct3dDev->CreateTexture(Width, Height, 1, D3DUSAGE_RENDERTARGET, D3DFMT_X8R8G8B8, D3DPOOL_DEFAULT, &Texture, nullptr); Light render target created with Direct3dDev->CreateTexture(Width, Height, 1, D3DUSAGE_RENDERTARGET, D3DFMT_A8R8G8B8, D3DPOOL_DEFAULT, &Texture, nullptr); I also tried to create both with D3DFMT_A8R8G8B8, again without difference. However, if I use this code: using (StreamWriter streamWriter = new StreamWriter("C:/Users/Michael/Documents/Visual Studio 2010/Projects/PuzzleGame/PuzzleGame/PuzzleGameContent/player.TXT", true)) { streamWriter.Write("Hello!"); streamWriter.Close(); } The program will work as intended and add "Hello!" to the save file. Is there any way I can do this without hardcoding the path?

  • How can I derive force vectors from velocity vectors?

    I'm making a 2d shooter ala Geometry Wars. I've got my own simple physics at work driving the background grid and all my entities. To move anything in the world I apply a Vector2d force to it. The 'engine' calculates the resulting acceleration and therefore the velocity. I am trying to port some code I found which implements the classic 'Boids' flocking algorithm, but the code I have works by calculating the Boids' velocities directly, so If i use it as is, it bypasses my physics engine. How I can translate the velocity vectors into force vectors that I can apply to the Boids and which will result in the proper velocities via my physics engine.

    I've been trying to find a tutorial on how to best make animations in Android. I already have some animations for my enemies and my character that are controlled by rectangles and changing rectangleframe between updates using a picture like this: When I'm shooting my enemies they lose HP, and when their HP == 0 they get removed. aslong as im using an arrayList (which I do for all enemies and bullets) I'm fine, since I can just use list.remove(i). But when I'm on a boss-level and the Boss's HP == 0, I want to remove him and play an animation of an explosion of stars before the "End-screen". Is there a preferred way to do temporary animations like this? If you can give me an example or redirect me to a tutorial, I'd be really grateful!

  • What's wrong with this Open GL ES 2.0. Shader?

    I just can't understand this. The code works perfectly on the emulator(Which is supposed to give more problems than phones…), but when I try it on a LG-E610 it doesn't compile the vertex shader. Since I removed the log in a previous edit I will just say i'm looking for feedback on compiling shaders. Solution + More questions: Ok, the problem seems to be that either ints are not working(generally speaking) or that you can't mix floats with ints. That brings to me the question, why on earth glGetShaderInfoLog is returning nothing? Shouldn't it tell me something is wrong on those lines? It surely does when I misspell something. I solved by turning everything into floats, but If someone can add some light into this, It would be appreciated. Thanks.

    I have a client that sends data at 1KHz (i.e. 0.001 sec) to a master over Internet using UDP protocol. In Master, I need to draw an object, but the problem is that the update of GLUT is slower than the client's update. I have tried to use glutTimerFunc(0,glutIdle, 0); but still slow. Is there a way to speed up the update rate of drawing? I need to update Display() every 0.001 sec. Any suggestions? I'm using windows 7.

This will be used to consequently draw a vector from the camera's position through the player's click-coordinates to determine the world coordinates they clicked (or could've clicked). Also, when I set the camera coordinates, do I set the coordinates of the camera or do I set the coordinates of the image plane? Thank you for your help. EDIT: So, I managed to solve how to calculate the distance of the camera...     In Panda3d, I load a model and place 10000 references to it in the scene-graph. It runs at (say) 2Hz. I load a 3d model containing 10000 copies of that exact same object, and it runs at (say) 60Hz. As does using the flattenStrong() command which is effectively the same thing but at runtime. So the question is: is this behaviour a peculiarity of Panda3d, or is it a fundamental law which applies to all games engines?

  • Object array updates one instance repeatedly [on hold]

    I'm making a 2D shooter, and the player object holds an array of bullets that represent how many shots the player can have on screen at once. At least, this is what I'm trying for. What's happening is that each time any of the objects in the array is called, it seems to update a single object in memory. So, if I fire and then fire again, the object "starts over" from where I shot from and moves twice as fast. I've spent weeks trying to fix this and I've managed nothing. Hopefully another pair of eyes will see something I've missed.   • Can you run OpenGL 2.0 on modern machines?

    I'm looking to get into 3d with OpenGL, using SDL to help with other stuff. I found plenty of good tutorials (lazyfoo is a big one), but "Learning Modern 3d Graphics Programming" uses a newer version of openGL that I'm not able to run! I opened up OpenGL extensions viewer, and I can only run OpenGL 2.0, whereas most tutorials are in higher versions. I ask this because I've heard that just about everything in 2.* got depreciated in the newer versions, so I'm worried that my code might not work. I'm looking at a few other tutorials, but I'm so used to SDL that those just confuse me... So should I bother trying to do graphics programming now, or should I just wait until I can upgrade my computer?

I want to be able to rapidly design visual debugging tools and I am not proefficient enough in graphics rendering to do it myself (writing the low level stuff that is). The library would have to be for C/C++. I've already taken a look at the open-source 3d engine, but I feel those are too big for what I really need. Do any of you know if such library exist? If so, links would be appreciated!

    I want to build and android app that visualize real time data , I set up a UDP channel that get the data , now I want to visualize it . I now that I can use openGL ES. but I have now back ground and in a few weeks I dont think that i'm able to learn that . what about android processing ? could it be used for extensive visualization task like this? or it's limited ? I heard it's not hard to learn that. any other option ?

  • Simulating a sine wave/oscillating pattern for enemies

    I'm creating a simple top down shooter, right now I have an enemy which simply follows the player. I'd like to change things up and have the enemies move towards the player but in a wave like motion. I have looked at some similar questions like this but they don't take into account for the Y changing. How can I simulate a wave like pattern for my enemies whilst they are homing into their target.   • Bubble sorting my array does not sort it

    I sort an array of chunks by doing this: for (int i =0; i<this.getQueue().size();i++) { for (int j =0; j<this.getQueue().size()-i-1;j++) { Chunk temp1 = this.getQueue().get(i); Chunk temp2 = this.getQueue().get(i+1); if (temp1 != null &&temp2 != null && temp2.getLocation().getY() < temp1.getLocation().getY()) { this.getQueue().set(i, temp2); this.getQueue().set(i+1, temp1); } } } What I want is the the chunks with the lowest Y coordinate will be at the start of the array and the ones with the bigger Y coordinate will be at the end of the array. And this is my result: 1024.0 944.0 1104.0 944.0 1104.0 ----BEFORE----- 944.0 1024.0 944.0 1104.0 1104.0 ---AFTER--- Why is this not working It seams fine. I dont want to use a comparator so dont suggest it. More info, the Y cords are floats. I got the result by for each looping on this queue and printed the Y locations.

  • Is this a reliable method of parsing glGetShaderInfoLog()?

    I want to get a list of errors and their line numbers so I can display the error information differently from how it's formatted in the error string and also to show the line in the output. It looks easy enough to just parse the result of glGetShaderInfoLog(), look for ERROR:, then read the next number up to :, and then the next, and finally the error description up to the next newline. However, the OpenGL docs say: Application developers should not expect different OpenGL implementations to produce identical information logs. This makes me worry that my code may behave incorrectly on different systems. I don't need them to be identical, I just need them to follow the same format. So is there a better way to get a list of errors with the line number separate, is it safe to assume that they'll always follow the "ERROR: 0:123:" format, or is there simply no reliable way to do this?

  • Dynamic object creation with HashMap

    I want to use a HashMap to dynamically create objects based on the key. I have a Random Map Generator that stores the maps in 3D Arrays of Type Integer[][][]. Upon creation of the actual map I iterate through this array and based on the Integer I want to create the right block. Example: Integer[][][] map ... map[6][6][6] = 3; 3 is a Earth-Block and now I want to initialize a new Block of this type and give it the right coordinates. Currently I store my Bindings from Integer to Class in a HashMap(Integer, String) and create my objects like that: int id = array[x][y][z]; String block_name = Blocks.map.get(id); Block block = (Block) Class.forName(block_name).newInstance(); block.setPosition(x,y,z); But I want to avoid newInstance() if possible. I've never worked that dynamically with Java before and I couldn't find a solution like changing the HashMap to (Integer, Class) or something. I just need to create a new Object based upon the Integer. Any ideas/solutions? Thanks in advance and have a wonderful day!

    I am currently using DirectX 9 on a machine with two GPUs and three monitors. I am currently trying to draw a triangle on each monitor using vertexbuffers; A directx helloworld with multiple monitors if you will. I am familiar with some DirectX coding, but new to multiple monitor DirectX coding. I may be going about this the wrong way, so please do correct me if I'm doing something wrong. I have created a Direct3D Device for each enumerated adapter sharing the same Form handle. This allows me to successfully use all three monitors in full-screen mode. For Each Adapter In Direct3D.Adapters Dim PresentParameters As New PresentParameters 'Setup PresentParameters PresentParameters.Windowed = False PresentParameters.DeviceWindowHandle = MainForm.Handle Dim Device as New Device(Direct3D, Adapter.Adapter, DeviceType.Hardware, PresentParameters.DeviceWindowHandle, CreateFlags.HardwareVertexProcessing, PresentParameters) Device.SetRenderState(RenderState.Lighting, False) Devices.Add(Device) Next I can also draw text to each device successfully using a different Font for each Device. When I render a triangle using a different VertexBuffer for each Device, only two monitors display the triangle. One of the two monitors on the same GPU, and the monitor on it's own GPU display properly.   • Limiting the speed of a dragged sprite in Cocos2dx

    I am trying to drag a row of sprites using ccTouchesMoved. By that I mean that there is a row of sprites (they are colored squares) lined up next to each other and if I grab one with a touch the rest follow it. However, if the sprite that is selected by touch moves too fast it creates a slight gap between it and the following sprites. How do I go about limiting the speed that I can drag the sprite with ccTouchesMoved? This is the only solution I could think of to my problem. If anyone has another suggestion to prevent this sprite gap from happening I would appreciate it.
