• "Misaligned partition" - Should I do repartition (how?)

  Tried to install Ubuntu 12.04 from USB-stick alongside the existing Win7 OS 64bit, and now I'm not sure if install was completely successful: Disk Utility tool claims that the Extended partition (which contains Ubuntu partition and Swap) is "misaligned" and recommends repartition. What should I do, and if should I do this repartition, how to do it (especially if I would like not to lose the data on Win7 partition)? Background info: A considerably new Thinkpad laptop (UEFI BIOS, if that matters). Before install there were already a "SYSTEM_DRV" partition, the main Windows partition and a Lenovo recovery partition (all NTFS). Now the table looks like this: SYSTEM_DRV (sda1), Windows (sda2), Extended (sda4) (which contains Linux (sda5; ext4) and Swap (sda6)) and Recovery (sda3). Disk Utility Tool gives a message as follows when I select Ext: "The partition is misaligned by 1024 bytes. This may result in very poor performance. Repartitioning is suggested." There were couple of problems during the install, which I describe below, in the case they happen to be relevant. Installer claimed that it recognized existing OS'es fine, so I checked the corresponding option during the install. Next, when it asked me how to allocate the disk space, the first weird thing happened: the installer give me a graphical "slide" allocate disk space for pre-existing Win7 OS and new Ubuntu... but it did not inform me which partition would be for Ubuntu and which for Windows. ..well, I decided to go with the setting installer proposed. (not sure if this is relevant, but I guess I'd better mention it anyway - the previous partition tools have been more self-explanatory...) After the install (which reported no errors), GRUB/Ubuntu refused to boot. Luckily this problem was quite straightforwardly resolved with live-Ubuntu-USB and Boot-Repair ("Recommended repair" worked just fine). After all this hassle I decided to check the partition table "just to be sure"- and the disk utility gives the warning message I described.

• Can't access Terminal anymore, only shows a cursor

  I run OS X. Following these directions (Installing MySQL on Mac OS X) I added a file to /usr and the contents were PATH=/usr/local/mysql/bin:$PATH Actually I was trying to get the mysql command to work now I cannot access terminal. All I get is a cursor but no command line. I also cannot find the file I created in the Finder. I used command shift G to find the folder /usr and the file is not there. Edit: I Solved the problem by restarting my computer. I am really not sure what the problem was. I got the idea because Could not open a new pseudo-tty. appeared in my terminal after following slhck directions to remove my .profile file. • Can't boot from USB - 11.04 / Exopc

  I can't find the answer to this anywhere. I am new to Ubuntu, please help! I have a wetab, except now I don't, because I put Ubuntu 10.10 over the top of it (meant to dual boot, but that's another story). I upgraded to 11.04 out of curiosity. It's good, but not for touchscreen tablets - no multi touch for example. I want to get back the wetab OS now. I have all the files, and I have a bootable gparted USB stick. The problem is I can't seem to boot from USB. The "wetab" PC is actually an ExoPC, so it has only the hardware button and a soft button in the top corner. Using the wetab OS method of reaching BIOS with the hard and soft buttons doesn't work now, I only get a menu asking if I want to run Ubuntu in recovery mode, run a limited command line, or do a memory check. I need to either repartition the drive so I can dual boot with WeTabOS, or just wipe over Ubuntu and start again. How do I do this? I have also tried hammering F11, Del, F8, F1, many other combinations! Edit: I do have access to USB keyboard and mouse

  I installed Ubuntu 13.04 on Windows 8. Yes I can access both of them, but the process is kind of long. In BIOS, EFI is for Windows 8, legacy support is for Ubuntu. If I choose EFI first, the startup just go straight to Win8 without offering me a choice. If I choose legacy first, the starup will offer me a choice between win8 and ubuntu. But I can only choose Ubuntu. If i choose win8, there will be a mistake(file missing under configuration). That is to say, every time i wanna switch to another OS, I have to go into BIOS and change the priority settings. I heard something about secure boot might be the cause of this situation. But the thing is that there is not even an option called "secure boot" in my BIOS, which means i cannot disable it. All I want is that an option menu appears everytime i turn on my computer so i can easily choose what OS I want for today. Can anyone help me plz? Thank you very much!!

• Splitting Pygame functionality between classes or modules?

  I am attempting to make my pygame application more modular so that different functionalities are split up into different classes and modules. I am having some trouble getting pygame to allow me to draw or load images in secondary classes when the display has been set and pygame.init() has been done in my main class. I have typically used C# and XNA to accomplish this sort of behavior, but this time I need to use python. How do I init pygame in class1, then create an instance of class2 which loads and converts() images. I have tried pygame.init() in class 2 but then it tells me no display mode has been set, when it has been set in class1. I am under the impression i do not wnat to create multiple pygame.displays as that gets problematic I am probably missing something pythonic and simple but I am not sure what. • How can I get my monitor's maximum resolution without the proprietary AMD graphic driver installed?

  I am using Ubuntu 14.04. I have an AMD Radeon 5570 HD graphic card. Actually, the default open source REDWOOD drivers aren't allowing me to choose my monitor's maximum screen resolution(which is 1366 x 768). I just have two resolutions displayed which are 1024x768 and 800x600 . If I give the command : xrandr -s 1366x768 then the output is: Size 1366x768 not found in available modes So just for the sake of getting 1366x768 resolution I am forced to install the proprietary graphic driver that AMD gives me from its site. But if I install it(which itself is quite a problem-prone process), I undergo a lot of 'inconvenience'. Sometimes after an OS update, the driver crashes unity. Then I will have to uninstall that driver from a tty and google around for a solution. Also I encounter screen tearing problems occasionally. In addition I also cant see my login screen(See this question which states this particular problem). The main problem is AMD does not update its driver as quick as Ubuntu updates its OS. This is quite irritating. So, I want the maximum resolution(and performance) that my graphics card and monitor can give me without installing the 'problematic' proprietary graphic card driver that AMD gives. Is this possible? • I keep getting blue screen - Windows 7 x64 (maybe ram?)

  I have +- 5yrs old pc runnig windows 7 and I've been getting blue screen recently. I had win 8 and I got a lof of erros with ram memory, so I reinstalled back to Win 7. (I have 2x 2 GB RAM) To make a better image of my errors - I get them while writing email, installing nvidia driver, sound driver, running RAM test. I got a log of my last error, could anyone tell me what is it? Should I get new RAM memories? • How can I define custom keyboard mappings to resize, move, and manage windows?

  I just returned to ubuntu (13.04) after a year using OS X exclusively. I love the improvements that have come to ubuntu and unity, and I'm glad to be back. There's just one thing, though... Slate is a simple OS X tool that allows users to quickly create powerful keyboard macros and really take advantage of their screen space. I have to say I was spoiled by it. Even on a tiny laptop, my workflow was never interrupted by changing workspaces or leaving the keyboard to adjust a window, because perfect adjustment was a keystroke or two away. For example: bind h:ctrl;alt;cmd resize -10% +0 # this increases the window's left width by 10% bind h:shift;alt nudge -10% +0 # this moves the window left by 10% You make a big config file, and like vim, tmux, and everything else, it just becomes muscle memory. I can't seem to find a way to achieve anything close to this in linux or ubuntu. I've tried to make do with compiz window settings and the built-in stuff Ubuntu offers, but it's not even in the same realm. Although to be fair, this level of tuning isn't something most people care about. Thanks, guys. :) Any feedback would be appreciated.

  Hi, I used to use VMWare Workstation and made several VMs with Win Server 2008, which worked fine. My first tasks were to setup RDP, updates, and activate the OS. I deleted Workstation and thus did not have my VMs available to use for about 2 months. Now I have VMWare Server 2.0.2 as I this is free and I am going to get Hyper-V on a host Win Server in about March, but when I have accessed one of my VMs (haven't tried the others yet), it complains that the copy of Windows is not genuine. I now have a black screen but can access all my apps on the VM. Will the OS eventually shut me out from accessing it? I got my key from the Action Pack but the standard R2 key has been taken down and replaced with the Enteprise R2 key. I have Enterprise R2 but apparently the autorun is corrupt! Thanks

  I am a programmer from China. And I like to use English words to name my files and folders Whether it is for work or life. For example, suck as Movie, Work, QtProjects, Music and so on.And I keep the habit of initial the first letter for file name or folder name in Windows. But now I work on Ubuntu, and I found that all file name and folder name are lowercase in addition to the default folder such as Music, Movie and so on. And then I realize that in Linux world, most peoloe like to use all lowercase to name their files and folders for two reasons (1. Linux is Case sensitive. 2. It is fast for shell command.). And after work, when I switch from Linux to Windows, I confuse to use all lowercase or the first letter uppercase style to name my files in Windows. I'm caught in a dilemma. I think that all lowercase is more efficiency but the first letter uppercase is more readable. I thought for a long time and want to come up with a good answer to blance the two style name conversion. But I failed. I want to ask you that how you balance the uppercase or lowercase habbit in Windows, Mac, Linux between work and personal life style? Thank you very much! (My current solution is that when I am in Linux, I use all lowercase for files and folders, but when I am in Windows and Mac OS X, I couldn't find a good reason to convince me to use all lowercase ( I think in Windows and Mac OS X, the first letter uppercase style for me is more readable and beautiful).

  My ever-growing interest in computers is making me ask deeper questions, that we don't seem to have to ask anymore. Our computers, at boot, as far as I understand it, are in text mode, in which a character can be displayed using the software interrupt 0x10 when AH=0x0e. We've all seen the famous booting font that always looks the same, regardless of what computer is booting. So, how on earth do computers output graphics at the lowest level, say, below the OS? And also, surely graphics aren't outputted a pixel at a time using software interrupts, as that sounds very slow? Is there a standard that defines basic outputting of vertices, polygons, fonts, etc. (below OpenGL for example, which OpenGL might use)? What makes me ask is why OS' can often be fine without official drivers installed; how do they do that? Apologies if my assumptions are incorrect. I would be very grateful for elaboration on these topics!

  After trying to install both OS during 2 days, I'm confused and getting mad... I have SSD 128 GB and HDD 500 GB both empty. My laptop is Asus K55VM. BIOS support UEFI. What I have done: Install new SSD (Samsung 830 128GB) Use GParted on liveCD to create new table of partitions (GPT) and create 3 partitions (in the SSD) for different purposes: Partition 1: 80 GB (w7); Partition 2: 30 GB (Ubuntu 12.04 -Just / -); Partition 3: 10 GB unused (for future extesion of the other partitions) Install Windows 7 (with UEFI) in Partition 1. This create: /dev/sda1 - 100 MB for System (UEFI boot I guess) - FAT32 /dev/sda2 - 100 MB aprox. for MSR /dev/sda3 - 79.800 MB aprox. for Windows7 data In this point everything works fine. I have W7. Now I install Ubuntu 12.04 amd64 (with UEFI) as follows: Install / in Partition 2 - /dev/sda4 30 GB ext4, and in the hdd I install /home and swap. I select bootloader in /dev/sda1 (where it's supposed to be the UEFI boot). I install updates and reboot. Problem: Now just appears grub menu with Ubuntu entries and not Windows 7. Alternative solution found: When I turn on laptop, before loading GRUB I press ESC key and appear BIOS boot, so I can select to boot the Windows partition, Ubuntu partition, DVD, USB, etc... but I think is not the best way to boot different OS. I've tried: sudo update-grub2 with no success. What can I do??

  OK I run a streaming website and my CMS is giving me an error when uploading videos "Failed To Find Flength File" ok so I did some research. The answer I got from the coder was below. I did do all that, but the only thing I could not do is turn off what he refers to as performance cache, talked about in the last sentence... I am on a Cent OS Assuming the script is set up properly, you are probably dealing with some kind of write-caching. Some servers perform write-caching which prevents writing out the flength file or the entire CGITemp file during the upload. The flength file or the CGITemp file do not actually hit the disk until the upload is complete, making it worthless for reporting on progress during the upload. This may be fixed using a .htaccess file assuming your host supports them. Here is a link to an excellent tutorial on using .htaccess files. I strongly recommend giving it a quick read before attempting to install your own .htaccess file. 1. A mod_security module for Apache. To fix it just create a file called .htaccess (that's a period followed by "htaccess") and put the following lines in that file. Upload the file into the directory where the Uber-Uploader CGI ".pl" scripts resides, or in some directory above it (like your server's DOCUMENT_ROOT, i.e. the top-level of your webspace). htaccess files must be uploaded as ASCII mode, not BINARY. You may need to CHMOD the htaccess file to 644 or (RW-R--R--). # Turn off mod_security filtering. SecFilterEngine Off # The below probably isn't needed, # but better safe than sorry. SecFilterScanPOST Off If the above method does not work, try putting the following lines into the file SetEnvIfNoCase Content-Type \ "^multipart/form-data;" "MODSEC_NOPOSTBUFFERING=Do not buffer file uploads" mod_gzip_on No 2. "Performance Cache" enabled on OS X SERVER. If you're running OS X Server and the progress bar isn't working, it could be because of "performance caching." Apparently if ANY of your hosted sites are using performance caching, then by default, all sites (domains) will attempt to. The fix then is to disable the performance cache on all hosted sites.

• How to uninstall AMD Display Driver from other install of Windows

  So my Windows 7 had a BSOD from an Ati driver file then restarting only gives me some wierd coloured lines at the top of the screen. Starting in safe mode causes the boot up to freeze at AtiPcie.sys and overlays the same coloured lines on the safe mode start up display. It seems to be a problem with the display driver but I can't get into the OS at all to uninstall it. Luckily I have an old install of Windows 7 from when I moved to a SSD still on my HDD and that runs just fine so I'm pretty sure its a software problem (Maybe the SSD corrupted a driver file or something). So does anyone know how I can uninstall the driver files from another Windows 7 install on the same PC? EDIT: What I mean is, I'm running on the broken PC right now but using a different HDD's windows install. I have full access to the not booting up OS drive with the Windows so I can delete any files/load the registry etc...

  I have a long running C program in which I've started from the Terminal.app using: gdb program_name gdb run I'm using many printf statements to monitor the progress of the program. Unfortunately, the screen of the computer has been frozen since yesterday, but the process is still running. My question is, can I watch the progress of the program (i.e. the results of the printf statements) remotely?   I would like to remote desktop from my Macbook to my Work's laptop from home. I connect to the work's network via Cisco VPN. My Cisco VPN clients connects fine in Mac OS X but I am unable to remote desktop. I am also unable to ping my work laptop. The laptop is powered on and not sleeping. I can access it via LogMeIn. If I were to actually pug into our network at the building. I can remote desktop to my work laptop from my Macbook. • Deleted info in Boot folder

  First off, I'm using Zorin 7 OS. So my Boot folder was too full to install any new updates, I used a tutorial I found somewhere on here to remove the unneeded linux-image files, and must of also deleted the latest one as well. Now when I attempt to boot I get error: no such partition. grub rescue> I used my MultiSystem USB to install (on a separate partition) a different Linux OS (Kali) and no longer get that error, however, it will ONLY give me the option to boot Kali Linux. Here's the biggest new problem though, I used the built in option of hard drive encryption for Zorin 7 when I initially installed it, so now when I attempt to explore it (to get all my saved data which is REALLY important to me), it asks me for password for encryption. However, the password says it in not recognized, and I know it's right, I had to type it in every single day. So I either need a way to restore my Zorin 7 boot files or GRUB or whatever, so I can boot it up... or I need to know how to fix my encryption problem to save all my info.

  I had programmed a brilliant web page in ASP.NET 4.0 and lo and behold, this one page lost its sessions in Google Chrome. I could run it locally in debug and could not reproduce the issues in Chrome. Didn't happen in IE or Firefox, only Chrome on the published server.   I'm trying to setup both Windows 7 and Ubuntu 14.04 Desktop on the same machine. I've partitioned the disk into 3 parts, so that I can have Windows Ubuntu Shared Partition for Files I've installed Windows 7 on the first partition (which created a small partition of 100MB for boot), so now I have 4 partitions on the disk which is all it can take. Now I am installing Ubuntu, and it's asking me whether I want to: Install Ubuntu inside Windows 7 Replace Windows 7 with Ubuntu (No!) Something else I want the Ubuntu installation to go into the partition that I prepared for it. Should I choose "Something else"? If I do so -- will I be able to choose which OS to load at boot? Can anyone explain how "Ubuntu inside Windows" work? it says that it will allow me to choose which OS to load at boot, which is desired. UPDATE: When choosing "Something else" I see also an option for Device for Boot Loader Installation: /dev/sda -- the ssd disk itself /dev/sda1 -- the Windows 7 loader (100MB partition) /dev/sda4 -- which is one of the other partitions Which one should I choose there? The hard drive is huge, hundreds of gigs, and essentially unfilled. The machine runs Windows 7 Home. Online I have seen mention of creation of partitions from inside Windows 7. But, I have also heard claims that to create the partition to house Ubuntu Windows has to be reinstalled, frying all the data on the machine. So, which one of these claims are right? Can you create additional partitions for other OS on a big Windows 7 hard drive without reinstall?

• Accessing localhost:8080 through local network

  I'm developing a Python WSGI website. I'm running a Paste development server on my Mac (OS X 10.7) on port 8080. I want to test the website on some other devices and OSs I have connected to the local network (Windows 7 VM, iPad, iPhone, etc.), but am having trouble. I turned on Web Sharing, and am able to access that (port 80) without a problem on all my devices. Port 8080 still doesn't work. An excerpt from my Paste configuration: [server:main] use = egg:waitress#main host = 127.0.0.1 port = 8080 The OS X firewall (Settings - Security - Firewall) is off. I have no other firewall software installed. My network is through a Linksys WRT160N router. I haven't done much with the settings, so most of them are at their defaults. I've been Googling all morning, but can't find a solution.
