• problems with studying algorithms

  hello everyone, I'm currently studying computer science at the Institute, and I have some problems with course which is named Algorithms, I've just begun to study it, but I'm already feeling, that I'm going to fail it, my problem is that while understanding different algorithms on graphs I need to keep in my mind a lot of info, and usually I can't do it, I forget some points of the exercise or can't proceed to final result, I'm very desperate about it cause I like programming very much. Did somebody feel the same while studying in the University? thanks in advance for any help P.S. I began to program only two years ago, may it be the problem?

• Which prediction model for web page recommendation?

  I am trying to implement a web page recommendation wherein registered users will be given a recommendation of which page to visit depending upon the previous data.So with initial study I decided to go on with clustering the data with rough sets and then will move forward to find out the sequential patters with the use of prefix span algorithm.So now I want to have a better prediction model in place which can predict the access frequency of pages.I have figured out with Markov model but still some more suggestions will be valuable.Also please help me with some references of the models too.Is it possible to directly predict the next page access with the result of PrefixSpan.If so how?

• Studying parallel programming

  I'm currently finishing my Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and thinking a lot about which specialisation to choose in my Master's degree. One subject I'm particularly interested in is parallel programming. However, this topic does not seem to be a standard topic in Computer Science degrees, although it is something that is used more and more - new processors nowadays are usually dual or quad cores. So I was wandering: does anybody know a good study program in this field? I was mostly looking for it at universities in Germany, but they tend to combine the application side with some type of engineering or natural science. Thus, programs are more the "Computational Engineering" or "Computational Science" type, but I'm more interested in the Computer Science part of it, i.e. parallel programming, languages and compilers, algorithms and hardware.

• Cleaning a dataset of song data - what sort of problem is this?

  I have a set of data about songs. Each entry is a line of text which includes the artist name, song title, and some extra text. Some entries are only "extra text". My goal is to resolve as many of these as possible to songs on Spotify using their web API. My strategy so far has been to search for the entry via the API - if there are no results, apply a transformation such as "remove all text between ( )" and search again. I have a list of heuristics and I've had reasonable success with this but as the code gets more and more convoluted I keep thinking there must be a more generic and consistent way. I don't know where to look - any suggestions for what to try, topics to study, buzzwords to google?

  In my research study, I need to identify the key features of user story management tools that can be used to support agile development. So far, I identified the following general groups of features: User role modeling and personas support, User stories and epics management, Acceptance testing support, High-level release planning, Low-level iteration planning, and Progress tracking. Each group contains some specific features, e.g., support for story points, writing of acceptance tests, etc. Which features of user story management should an agile team look for especially when switching from tangible tools (index cards, pin boards and big visible charts) to a software tool?   Considering the PCWorld review that came out in March: Free Android Apps Packed with Ads are Major Battery Drains ...Researchers from Purdue University in collaboration with Microsoft claim that third-party advertising in free smartphone apps can be responsible for as much as 65 percent to 75 percent of an app's energy consumption... Is there a best practice for integrating advert support into mobile applications, so as to not drain user battery too much? ...When you fire up Angry Birds on your Android phone, the researchers found that the core gaming component only consumes about 18 percent of total app energy. The biggest battery suck comes from the software powering third-party ads and analytics accounting for 45 percent of total app energy, according to the study... Has anyone invoked better ways of keeping away from the "3G Tail", as the report puts it? Is it better/possible to download a large set of adverts that are cached for a few hours, and using them to populate your ad space, to avoid constant use of the Wi-Fi/3G radios? Are there any best practices for the inclusion of adverts in mobile apps?

  How do I pass a test of programming knowledge for a higher score on oDesk.com? I have passed php and javascript tests but I have passed them with low scores and barley passing. This doesn't look too appealing for clients and I'm afraid that is the reason I am not being hired for a job. I know I am capable of doing web work and such. But I haven't been accepted for an interview or anything. Any idea how to study for something like this ?

• What's a good starting point to learn about JIT compilers?

  I've spent the past few months learning about stack based virtual machines, parsers, compilers, and some elementary things about hardware architecture. I've also written a few parsers and compilers for C like languages to understand the generic parser/compiler pipeline. Now I'd like to take my understanding further by learning about optimizing compilers and JIT compilers but I'm having a hard time finding material at the right level. I don't yet understand enough to dive into a code base like PyPy or LuaJIT but I also know more than what most introductory compiler books have to offer. So what are some good books for an intermediate beginner like to me to look into?

• 'Situations gone wrong' for web apps...

  Hi all I know there's some decent material floating around relating to more specific areas, but wanted to get some opinions from people who have had bad experiences in the past. I have a project where I can have a say on the design of a B2C web app, which has some external API interfaces. UX is crucial as is speed. Not sure what technology will be used at this stage. In designing this application, I want to make sure obvious features are not left out (i.e. ones that make maintenance/development easier). So can you guys tell me about 'situations gone wrong' that could have been avoided had more consideration taken place? Am looking to gather feedback in general, so don't worry if your example is industry/technology specific - so long as it pertains to web. Thanks for reading, I look forward to your responses!

• [JOGL] my program is too slow, ho can i profile with Eclipse?

  hi juys my simple opengl program is really toooo slow and not fluid i'm rendering 30 sphere with simple illumination and simple material. the only hard(?) computing stuffs i do is a collision detection between ray-mouse and spheres (that works ok and i do it only in mouseMoved) i have no thread only animator to move spheres how can i profile my jogl project? or mayebe (most probable..) i have some opengl instruction that i don't understand and make render particular accurate (or back face rendering that i don't need or whatever i don't know exctly i'm just entered in opengl world)

• How to derive euler angles from matrix or quaternion?

  Currently working on steering behavior for my AI and just hit a little mathematical bump. I'm in the process of writing an align function, which basically tries to match the agent's orientation with a target orientation. I've got a good source material for implementing this behavior but it uses euler angles to calculate the rotational delta, acceleration, and so on. This is nice, however I store orientation as a quaternion and the math library I'm using doesn't provide any functionality for deriving the euler angles. But if it helps I also have rotational matrices at my disposal too. What would be the best way to decompose the quaternion or rotational matrix to get the euler information? I found one source for decomposing the matrix, but I'm not quite getting the correct results. I'm thinking it may be a difference of column/row ordering of my matrices but then again, math isn't my strong point. http://nghiaho.com/?page_id=846

• What is the increase in developer productivity while using Hibernate?

  I was curious to find out the percentage increase in developer's productivity by using Hibernate. We use both Hibernate and NHibernate extensively and find them to be extremely elegant frameworks but haven't undertaken any study to find out the time savings by using them. IMHO, one could get a good 30 to 40% jump in developer productivity as one doesn't have to write the basic CRUD operations and bother about caching. But, are there are any formal case studies which prove that point? I would really appreciate if someone could direct me to a published white paper about some statistics about the productivity gains.

• How seriously would an employer take a job application from an applicant studying at the Open University [closed]

  I ask the question because I am considering applying to a traditional bricks and mortar university to do mathematics, computer science or software engineering. However I am in my late twenties and have a young family so I am seriously considering going down the Open University route and working in the software development industry at the same time. If I do attend Open University, I will definitely study Mathematics. I fell in love with PHP and the common web technologies a few years back and it has slowly progressed into learning C++, Java and also Python. If I spent the next year increasing my knowledge of those languages whilst studying at the Open University, would an employee consider a self taught programmer who is 20% of the way through a Bsc in Mathematics?

• Lesser-known Github features that I'm missing out on with Bitbucket? [closed]

  I've been using Bitbucket for my small-team development projects, with the assumption that it is more-or-less a Github clone with pricing that is better for my situation and support for Mercurial (which I don't need). However, I'm seeing there are material-if-not-overwhelming differences, e.g. Github's appealing and useful branches page versus Bitbucket's overly simple branch drop-down list. This makes me wonder: what else am I missing out on? What are the lesser known Github features that folks like me using Bitbucket to save money are missing out on?   first sorry for contact me here. Recuro to you after reading all the material I found about it and so it does not get set. My question is: I can configure load balancing in any way out? I have a hub with 3 USB 3G modems, I got the 3 simultaneously connect with an upload speed of about 500kb in each approx. and a dynamic ip each. I do a unicast streaming with vlc rtp with a bandwidth of 1.5mb. Bone the sum of the three modems. I was searching on ifenslave, iproute. Then I found a draft vlc MultiCat. I understood that this could end, but configure it only moves a card. If I can help extend the information willingly. From now eternally grateful.

• Applying for MS CS with an un-related Bachelor's Degree [closed]

  I received a BA in Economics and went to work and started developing a passion for programming while on the job. This lead to learning more and more about computer science in general. I want to go for a Masters in Computer Science. I'm taking courses at the local college to get some of the undergrad CS courses out of the way (Data Structures etc.). However I'm not sure what to focus on for my application. Should I take the GRE for CS? A lot of college application procedures recommend it if you didn't go to undergrad for CS. Should I try to improve my GRE general test? I took it a month after college ended and got mediocre scores, so I could definitely study a bit harder and improve my scores. Anything else that's necessary? My current job is not exactly in a related field, but I do get to do some programming/coding.

• Language-independent sources on collision detection

  While making a Pong clone with a friend, we had to implement some collision detection. For research purposes, my friend dug up a book called "AdvancED Game Design with Flash" by Rex Van Der Spuy. This book was clearly targeted at implementing collision detection in ActionScript, and I also have some problems with how the concepts are presented, e.g. presenting one method as better than another, without explaining that decision. Can anyone recommend some good material on collision detection? I'd prefer it if kept the implementation details as language-independent as possible, e.g. by implementing the concepts in pseudo-code. Language-specific materials are not completely unwelcome though, though I'd prefer those to be in either Java, C#, F# or Python or similar languages, as those are the ones I'm most familiar with. :-) Lastly, is there perhaps widely known and used book on collision detection that most people should know about, like a 'the book on collision detection'?

• How do I get my polygons to be lighted by either side?

  Okay, I am using Ogre3D and Gorilla(2D library for ogre3D) and I am making Gorilla::Screenrenderables in the open scene. The problem that I am having is that when I make a light and have my SR(screenrenderable) near it, it does not light up unless the face of the SR is facing the light... I am wondering if there is a way to maybe set the material or code(which would be harder) so the SR is lit up whether the vertices of the polygon are facing the light or not. I feel it is possible but the main obstacle is how I would go about doing this.
