• Screen Resolution stuck at 640x480 after installing Bumblebee

  I have a Dell XPS 15z laptop. As you can see here, there are some issues with NVidia drivers. The site recommends installation of Bumblebee (instructions given in the link). I am posting it again for ease: $ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bumblebee/stable $ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade $ sudo apt-get install bumblebee bumblebee-nvidia $ sudo usermod -a -G bumblebee $USER After restarting the computer however, the screen resolution was stuck at 640x480 and I got the following error message as soon as I logged in: **Could not apply the stored configuration for monitors** none of the selected modes were compatible with the possible modes: Trying modes for CRTC 63 CRTC 63: trying mode 640x480@60Hz with output at 1366x768@60Hz (pass 0) CRTC 63: trying mode 640x480@60Hz with output at 1366x768@60Hz (pass 1) Trying modes for CRTC 64 CRTC 64: trying mode 640x480@60Hz with output at 1366x768@60Hz (pass 0) CRTC 64: trying mode 640x480@60Hz with output at 1366x768@60Hz (pass 1) Prior to the update, the display was absolutely normal and thus there is no doubt about the cause. Albeit, there was no support for graphic drivers. In case it helps, some features of graphics drivers seem to be functional after bumblebee, ie, all features are in order except for the resolution. And if the resolution can't be fixed, please suggest a way to retract the changes so that atleast the prior state may be reachieved. Any help in the matter would be highly appreciated.

• Can't customize the application switcher

  I'm trying to change the shortcut for switching applications from Alt+Tab to Ctrl+Tab, but changes in the System Settings > Keyboard > Shortcuts > Navigation are being ignored. Even if I disable the Switch applications shortcut entirely, it still maps to Alt+Tab. At one point I had some keys remapped with xmodmap, but since then I have deleted that configuration and rebooted. My keyboard layout settings are all defaults. The OS is Ubuntu 12.04, with all software updated this afternoon. It would also be nice to have the variation of application switching that includes one icon per window, instead of one icon per application, since I am frequently switching between windows of an application and would rather not wait for the switcher to realize I want a different window of the current application. My other Ubuntu 12.04 install has the application switcher that I like, but I'm not sure how to choose between them on this install (which was set up by my university department). Thanks if anyone can help me with this.

  Just now installed whm/cpanel, created some accounts, created mail account in one of them and entered squirrelmail to check the mail. • Record 8 separate Line IN Channels from M-Audio Delta 1010 Card

  I want to record the 8 separate Line IN Channels from my M-Audio Delta 1010 Card. The card is recogniced nicely and a can record a single channel via arecord -d 10 -f cd -t wav -D channel1 out2.wav. I've set up the different channels in ~/.asoundrc. Now if I want to record a second channel in parallel (arecord -d 10 -f cd -t wav -D channel2 out2.wav) I get the error arecord: main:564: audio open error: Device or resource busy As I understand the delta 1010 is a single Access Card, so only one application can access it at a time. Is this correct? The next step was to configure a dual channel input in .asoundrc # envy24 channel 1+2 only pcm.test { type plug ttable.0.0 1 ttable.0.1 1 slave.pcm ice1712 } Which works ok when I do a arecord -d 10 -f cd -t wav -D test -c 2 out.wav (BTW can anyone point me to a tool to split a multi channel wav into a file per channel?) But when I want to record the channels separately with (-I option) arecord -d 10 -f cd -t wav -D test -c 2 -I channel1.wav channel2.wav I get no recordings. Did I miss something with the configuration or what are my options to record all 8 channels via arecord. I've no experience with jackd. Is it an option to install jackd and record the line ins via jackd?

• Is there a resource that explains the benefits of layered programming?

  Some developers I know favor what I would call a procedural programming style. I recognize that procedural programming has its uses, albeit not in the business application world of .NET programming. So let's say we have a winform application with a buttonclick event. The buttonclick handles everything from the UI configuration to the database call and data manipulation. So you end up with a method that is 100's of lines of code long. Outside the fact that this code can't be considered test-able for various reasons, this style of programming is fragile to change. I can talk bout OO, Anti-patterns, etc. The problem is that any distinct topic I can dream up requires a great deal of explanation to understand the potential benefits. Outside of finding a new job (lots of businesses program this way), how can I teach these kinds of developers how to write better code? Obviously we can't sit around a round table and discuss pro's and con's all day due to time constraints and real work that has to be done. Although, training and intense training is the only thing I can think of to fix these problems. Not to say I write perfect code, I most certainly do not. I do believe there are certain best practices that should be followed as a rule E.G. OO in the context of .NET. The most common excuse I hear is "we can't write code fast enough if we do it like that".

• Synaptics touchpad scroll doesn't work on many applications

  The Synaptics touchpad in my new laptop doesn't scroll at all in a number of applications, including Steam and Zune. I've narrowed the problem down to Synaptics not sending mouse wheel messages, but rather manipulating scroll bars. I'm only looking into one-finger side-of-touchpad scrolling, not two-finger scrolling. Is there a way to make it send wheel messages so that it is compatible with all applications? • Selecting a JAX-RS implementation for a new project

  I'm starting a new Java project which will require a RESTful API. It will be a SaaS business application serving mobile clients. I have developed one project with Java EE 6, but I'm not very familiar with the ecosystem, since most of my experience is on the Microsoft platform. Which would be a sensible choice for a JAX-RS implementation for a new project such as described? Judging by Wikipedia's list, main contenders seem to be Jersey, Apache CXF, RESTeasy and Restlet. But the Comparison of JAX-RS Implementations cited on Wikipedia is from 2008. My first impressings from their respective homepages is that: CXF aims to be a very comprehensive solution (reminds me of WCF in the Microsoft space), which makes me think it can be more complex to understand, setup and debug than what I need; Jersey is the reference implementation and might be a good choice, but it's legacy from Sun and I'm not sure how Oracle is treating it (announcements page doesn't work and last commit notice is from 4 months ago); RESTeasy is from JBoss and probably a solid option, though I'm not sure about learning curve; Restlet seems to be popular but has a lot of history, I'm not sure how up-to-date it is in the Java EE 6 world or if it carries a heavy J2EE mindset (like lots of XML configuration). What would be the merits of each of these alternatives? What about learning curve? Feature support? Tooling (e.g. NetBeans or Eclipse wizards)? What about ease of debugging and also deployment? Is any of these project more up-to-date than the others? How stable are them?

• log in to v20z console using serial management

  I have a Netra T1 (SPARC) which has LOM that enable to log in to the OS console locally for troubleshooting without plug in a monitor and keyboard. I also have a SunFire V20z (x86) which has a SP. However I do not find any equivalent command to reach the console. It would not be ideal for me to bring along monitor and keyboard to the data center for troubleshooting locally. For example, I accidentally messup the OS network configuration and unable to log in the OS. I have to log to the console through serial management/LOM to troubleshoot it. However it seem doesn't work in x86 machine. Is there anyway I can able to do the same thing on x86 machine?

  I have a couple IIS/6.0 servers that security is asking me to remove a couple of response headers that are sent to client browsers on requests. They are concerned about divulging platform information through response headers. I have removed all the HTTP-HEADERS out of the IIS configuration for the website (X-Powered-By or some such header). (I personally do know that this information can be easily found out, even if it is hidden, but it isn't my call.) Headers I want to remove: Server - Microsoft-IIS/6.0 X-AspNet-Version - 2.0.50727 I also know that ASP.NET MVC also emits its own header too, if you know how to remove it also, that would be helpful. • How to better integrate a unix development environment into Windows

  I'm mostly a Windows user but I do most of my development (essentially web development) using unix tools and software. I've been going back and forth between using a dedicated lubuntu virtual machine on Virtualbox and using some tools directly in windows (msgit, python, django), but none of these approaches is entirely satisfactory. I'd like to hear of ways other devs use to better integrate a unix workflow into windows. For instance tighter integration between a linux and vm and windows. The vagrant demo showed how a VM could work off of a windows project folder and I found that nice. I'd like to hear of other tools and tips that would help mimic the workflow one can find on OS X (of course I understand that it cannot be as tightly integrated on Windows as it doesn't have the same unix underpinnings). PS: I have tried cygwin as well EDIT for clarifications about What I find lacking (thanks to axblount for pointing that out) : unix tools like msys et al do not work as well as their native unic counterparts. Many scripts, installers require further configuration or do not work at all. For instance getting virtualenvwrapper to work is not very straightforward. virtualbox: ideally I would like to use windows software (photoshop, sublime text 2) seamlessly with linux. I mostly use a FTP client atm to move over files edited on the windows side which is a tedious process.

• Package manager borked with gforge

  I've been having a problem with the package manager. I seemed to have installed gforge, partially, but it keeps giving me errors whenever I install something. (Note that the thing I'm trying to install actually does get installed, but there is always an error returned). Here it is: Creating /etc/gforge/httpd.conf Creating /etc/gforge/httpd.secrets Creating /etc/gforge/local.inc Creating other includes invoke-rc.d: unknown initscript, /etc/init.d/postgresql-8.4 not found. dpkg: error processing gforge-db-postgresql (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 100 Errors were encountered while processing: gforge-db-postgresql E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) When I try to remove it with: sudo apt-get purge gforge-common I get this: Reading package lists... • Hybrid USB Install Method - netboot and iso

  I was following the steps here ("Preparing Files for USB Memory Stick Booting") https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/installation-guide/i386/boot-usb-files.html to create a installation usb drive for 12.1. The very first paragraph of the article states "The second is to also copy a CD image onto the USB stick and use that as a source for packages, possibly in combination with a mirror." However, the only instructions mentioned regarding an iso image is to simply copy one somewhere on the drive (after its been made bootable and syslinux, vmlinuz and initrd.gz installed/copied): "you should now copy an Ubuntu ISO image onto the stick." I thought it strange there where no configuration steps for "pointing" the kernel to the iso (like a line in syslinux.cfg or a boot: option or something), but went ahead with the install anyway. I don't think the iso was used at all, it appeared that all the OS files where downloaded during the install process. Therefore, I was wondering if anyone knew how to use this local iso image in this particular installation technique (I know the image can be installed with dd, but thats a different technique), b/c I need to reinstall (I installed unity, but it's wayy to much for my little Atom based netbook) ? • Struggling to get set up with JOGL2.0

  I guess that Game Dev' is a more sensible place for my problem then SO. I did have JOGL1.1 set up and working, but I soon discovered that it did not support the latest OpenGL, so I started work on upgrading to JOGL2.0 it's not gone too well. Firstly, is it worth me trying to get JOGL to work, or should I just move over to LWJGL? I am fairly comfortable with OpenGL (via C++) and from what I did get working with JOGL1.1, I seem to be OK adapting to it. Assuming that I stick with JOGL, am I foolish for trying to use JOGL2.0? From what I can gather, JOGL2.0 is still in beta, but I am willing to go with it as I want to make use of the latest OpenGL I can. I have been using the Eclipse IDE and have set up a user library for JOGL, here is a screen shot of the configuration and I have added this user library to my own Eclipse project. the system variable %JOGL_HOME% points to "C:\Users\edacosh\Downloads\JOGL2.0" so that should work fine. Now, the problem I actually having, when I try to run my code, on the line GLProfile glp = GLProfile.getDefault(); The code stops with the following message... Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com/jogamp/common/jvm/JVMUtil at javax.media.opengl.GLProfile.<clinit>(GLProfile.java:1145) at DiCE.DiCE.<init>(DiCE.java:33) at App.<init>(App.java:17) at App.main(App.java:12) Caused by: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com.jogamp.common.jvm.JVMUtil at java.net.URLClassLoader$1.run(Unknown Source) at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method) at java.net.URLClassLoader.findClass(Unknown Source) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(Unknown Source) at sun.misc.Launcher$AppClassLoader.loadClass(Unknown Source) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(Unknown Source) ... 4 more I have also set my project to ensure that it is using jre6 along with jdk6, as I was having some issues. • Horrible performing RAID

  I have a small GlusterFS Cluster with two storage servers providing a replicated volume. Each server has 2 SAS disks for the OS and logs and 22 SATA disks for the actual data striped together as a RAID10 using MegaRAID SAS 9280-4i4e with this configuration: http://pastebin.com/2xj4401J Connected to this cluster are a few other servers with the native client running nginx to serve files stored on it in the order of 3-10MB. Right now a storage server has a outgoing bandwith of 300Mbit/s and the busy rate of the raid array is at 30-40%. There are also strange side-effects: Sometimes the io-latency skyrockets and there is no access possible on the raid for 10 seconds. The file system used is xfs and it has been tuned to match the raid stripe size. Does anyone have an idea what could be the reason for such a bad performing array? 22 Disks in a RAID10 should deliver way more throughput.

• How do I configure an ordinary TV remote control to work with lirc on Linux?

  I am running MythTV on Ubuntu 9.10 and I would like to use a TV remote to control it. I know that lirc needs a configuration file for the remote, but none of my remotes is in the official database. If I point a remote at the receiver on my TV card (a Pinnacle PCTV "Solo", model 72e) and press a button, dmesg logs the code generated by the remote, so I assume I just have to make a config file with a list of commands assigned to these codes. I've read a few how-tos but I still don't understand exactly how to create the config file. Some of the guides I've read refer to IR receivers on TV cards working at a "higher level of abstraction", which I take to mean that they decode the signal and provide a code, like the ones I can see in dmesg, rather than just giving raw data, but none of them explain where to go from there! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  I have a Ubuntu 12.04 server installed on my machine. I am trying to install request-tracker4. Here's what I have done so far : a) Installed request-tracker via "sudo apt-get install request-tracker4" b) I then tried configuring RT_SiteConfig.pm in /etc/request-tracker4 but then ran into problems in populating the MySQL database. c) I then did sudo dpkg-reconfigure request-tracker4 d) It solved my problems of not being able to populate / setup mysql etc. e) Now, I am trying to setup rt under www.mydomain.com/rt I have read various how-to's and bestpractical's own guides but I am not very much a expert in Apache configurations so stuck. My Current Ubuntu 12.04 server setup: Apache2, Fastcgi installed (checked in /etc/apache2/mods-enabled Web Server document root is default /var/www/ Web user www-data Question is : 1 ) Where and What shall I put in Apache configuration to start using RT via the web-interface ? I have seen two files in /etc/request-tracker4/ apache2-fastcgi.conf and apache2-fcgid.conf I even tried making a ln -s apache2-fastcgi.conf /etc/apache2/conf.d but when I tried opening that file in root while in the conf.d directory it said too many levels. Any request tracker experts on ubuntu ?:-) Your help will be very useful and appreciated Thanks Please let me know if you need further info !

• How to configure cookieless virtual host in Apache2?

  We run over a hundred web applications (growing daily) on a LAMP stack using Apache2 on Ubuntu 10.04. We've would like all requests to static content to be cookieless. We host applications on many different domains, a majority of which as SaSS applications. Many of the domains host instances of the applications on sub domains, ie. myapp.example.com, myapp2.example.com myapp.otherexample.com etc.. At the moment all static content is server relative to the (sub)domain requesting it. As far as I understand the process, I would need to setup a new domain, eg. staticexample.com. In this case is special configuration in the virtual host for this domain required to ensure no cookies are served? Also, would it be possible to instead use static.example.com? In this case what configurations would I need in my virtual host for this subdomain to ensure no cookies are served?

• Using Apache2 to set up a basic webpage

  I am having a problem with a test page I set up for my website. The config file (index.html) looks like this <html> <head> <title>Welcome to website.net!</title> </head> <body> <h1>Success! The website.net virtual host is working!</h1> </body> </html> Which should display a page like this in my browser when I navigate to www.mywebsite.net Welcome to website.net! Success! The website.net virtual host is working! However I get a 403 "forbidden" error when I navigate to the page. What am I missing? I have the directory installed on /var/www/mywebsite.net/public_html/index.html I have the permissions of the /var/www directory set to 755 so that others can read and exicute it but it does not seem to be working. I also have port 80 open on my iptable. The server is a VPS server if that makes a difference however I have added a DNS record for the ip address. Any help is appreciated! • BizTalk 2009 - The Community ODBC Adapter: Receive Location

  I have previously talked about the installation of the Community ODBC adapter and also using the ODBC adapter to generate schemas.  But what about creating a receive location? An ODBC receive location will periodically poll the configured database using the stored procedure or SQL string defined in your request schema. If you need to, begin by adding a new receive port to your BizTalk configuration. Create a new receive location and select to use the ODBC adapter and click Address. You will now be shown the ODBC Community Adapter Transport properties window.  Select connection string and you will be shown the Choose data Source window.  If you have already created the Test Database source when generating a schema from ODBC this will be shown (if not go and take a look in my previous post to see how this is done).   You will then need to choose the SQL command that will be run by the recieve port.  In this case I have deployed the Test Mapping schemas that I created previously and selected the Request schema. You should now have populated the appropriate properties for the ODBC Com Adapter. Finally set the standard receive location properties and your ODBC receive location is now ready.

• How to move unseen windows => Cannot access my application after switching monitors

  I switch monitors really often: At work I have a very poor computer, and gpu too, which is bad at keeping its configuration, resolution and monitor position between each reboot. Both monitor are different size and resolution. When doing that I often have applications that were on one of the monitors that remember their last position opened... so now they are unseen, at screen coordinates I cannot access. I know there is a shortcut that can access the move functionnality of a window. Could you remind it to me. Do you have other trick to center all opened windows into the visible screens ?

• Virtual PC - Display Issue with Ubuntu Server

  Hi Everyone, I just did a clean install of Ubuntu Server 9.04 in Virtual PC on the Windows 7 RC, and it seems to be having a bit of an issue with the virtual machine's display adapter. I've tried setting a VGA flag in the GRUB configuration to no avail. This is a guess, but I think it has something to do with the color console mode that gets enabled by default at boot time. The system starts booting just fine (i.e. the console looks "normal" when I'm asked to enter an LVM passphrase, etc.), but then the display goes wonky after a few seconds and I end up with this. Typing commands in bash works just fine: it's not like the system is frozen or anything, I just can't see anything that I type. The console looks exactly the way it does in the image below.

  First, has anyone EVER configured ISC bind 9.5.0 OR greater with support for GSS-TSIG Dynamic DNS Updates AND gotten it to work? If so, what is the configuration that was used to make that happen? I feel close to having this working. I see that GSS cred passes w/o apparent error during the TKEY negotiation with an Active Directory DC and the BIND DNS server: client 192.168.0.30#52314: query gss cred: "DNS/[email protected]", GSS_C_ACCEPT, 4294967256 gss-api source name (accept) is [email protected] process_gsstkey(): dns_tsigerror_noerror client 192.168.0.30#52314: send But, when the Update is sent, it is refused: client 192.168.0.30#58330: update client 192.168.0.30#58330: updating zone 'example.com/IN': update failed: rejected by secure update (REFUSED) client 192.168.0.30#58330: send Does anyone have this working in the real world?
