• creating extended partition

  this is my current hard disk status(Running linux Mint LIVE CD) i have- Ubuntu 12.04 on 206 GB partition at dev/sda1. dev/sda2 system reserved. Windows 7 on 90GB partition at dev/sda3 and linux swap in extended partition. what i want to do- I want to install Linux mint KDE on my system for that i want to create a new partition of 30GB(by shrinking the free space available at dev/sda1), i can't create that because i can create only 4 Primary partitions which are already there. so do i have to delete the Swap partition? and if i did how to force Mint KDE and Ubuntu 12.04 to use/share same swap space in new logical partition?

  I'm fresh on Ubuntu, still learning how to use it. Recently I've been trying to install utorrent, which I already was able to do so, but I need the port 8080 free to use run tomcat/glassfish and on port 80 php. Briefly, how can I change utorrent port from 8080 to another one? I've been trying to find a solution for this issue for about 3 days now, I saw some solutions, such as create a utserver.config, but I have no clue in how to use it or config it by terminal or on properties, that is something hardly explained by anyone. Any help will be appreciated :D.

• Update failing. Not enough space on /tmp

  Im not being able to run update manager as I get the error saying that there is not enough free space in the /tmp directory. I've practically cleaned out the tmp directory but the error persists. • Problem installing Ubuntu 13.10 alongside Windows 8

  What I have: Sony Vaio laptop (SVE1512E6EW) with preinstalled Windows 8. I disabled Secure Boot some time ago in BIOS. I already had Ubuntu (previous version) installed on it, but removed it some time ago. After that, the default Windows boot menu is showing up everytime I boot up computer, and the only entry is Windows 8. What I did: Burned Ubuntu 13.10 DVD Restarted computer and booted from it Chosen Install Ubuntu (not Try Ubuntu) Created new ext4 partition from free space Installed Ubuntu on it What happened: After the installation I restarted computer. Windows default boot menu showed up (just as before) and the only entry was still Windows 8. If you have any additional questions I will try to answer them as fast as possible.

• How to calculate shot angle and velocity to hit a moving target?

  I am developing a 2D Android game and I am making an aiming algorithm for AI projectiles to hit enemies either following a path, or free moving. At the moment it just calculates where the target will be after a distance and fires a projectile to meet it at that distance. Of course this means varying the projectile speed to meet the target. Does anyone have any tips for a simple-ish algorithm (optimal-ish) to calculate when the projectile needs to fire and where it needs to aim if it can only travel at a constant velocity? Say the projectile goes twice the speed of the target? The only way I can think of involves searching and seems quite large.

  I previously used this tutorial to dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 perfectly. Now I have upgraded my Windows 7 to Windows 8. And I would like to do a fresh install (and start all over again like the tutorial) of Ubuntu 12.10 replacing existing Ubuntu 12.04. I like the way the tutorial presents thus can anyone kindly let me know if the tutorial is compatible with what I wanna do now? I have tried doing little research whether this has been asked, but all I got are not too similar to my question, if there are topics like this I do apologise and feel free to close it.   I know that 25 lines of lock free code is harder to do than 1000 lines of On_Click()... code but I wonder does anybody know in general what is the productivity of the average programmer in top tech companies. Motivation: I often go ??? mode when I see how low LoC/ day i produce(Im new to the my current language and Im part of the big project, but still..) and I would like to know how bad I am. :) If you are gonna warn me that LoC is a terrible measure I agree, but it is most exact one in a sense that I cant go and write 0.01% of Chrome or IE and say it took me this long so....

Roll your own Install Something Like Wordpress Use a hosted service like Tumblr Obviously, if you can get away with Option 3 you have done yourself a favor. I have been using Tumblr and pointing blog.mydomain.com to the domains.tumblr.com CNAME to get a free blog that looks like it belongs to my site. I want to be able to display my blog on my root level hostname like mydomain.com/blog. The whole point of moving from blog.mydomain.com to mydomain.com/blog is for SEO purposes. Whats the best way to go about this and still get to leverage a hosted blogging platform like Tumblr?

  My customer, a translations business owner, just told me that he has been reading about Ruby on Rails and told me that "there are more PHP guys around there" and "it seems the community prefers it". What would you, as software engineer and freelancer, say to the customer to achieve these goals: Sell Make him see that the technology is my expert decision and Rails is as good or better than PHP (+ whatever framework) for this particular project. • skype crashes, also audio problems 13.10

  Ive always had problems with skype ususally with audio, trying to keep the usb headphones set correctly. Wha tive found is that when i see the Pulseaudio server in the audio list in Skype, and thats my only option, Skype works good,...stable and reliable. Second issue: Its been crashing a bit, just locks up and the only thing to free it up is a reboot,.. These problems are under the new release 13.10. so concider this a bug report. DEVELOPERS: You all need to make a good channel for people to report bugs,.... OK thats all/

• How to remove items from an arraylist without shrinking the list [migrated]

  I have a case where I am using the ArrayList to keep a list of items that are keyed by their position in the list. Other objects reference the ArrayList items by their position. If I delete one of the items from the list, I don't want the list to shrink because that would invalidate all other references to items in the list (e.g. item 2 is now in position 1). My solution to the shrinking array list problem is to null the position in the arraylist so that the list will not shrink. I am curious whether this will free the memory formerly held by the item at that position. If there is a better way to accomplish this requirement, I would like to know about it.

• Problem running iPhone application on iPhone from Xcode (and in Instruments)

  Hi I have a problem running one application on the iPhone from Xcode (or Instruments). When I try to run the app I get the error message Failed to upload XXX.app in the bottom left corner of Xcode. The strange thing is it actually uploaded the app to the iPhone but it doesn't start it (after this I can start the app by hand on the iPhone). So without being able to start the app from Xcode or instruments I have no chance of debugging/performance testing. Any advice on what might be going wrong here? The iPhone console shows me this: Thu Oct 1 14:25:18 unknown mobile_installationd[1976] <Error>: 00808e00 install_embedded_profile: Skipping the installation of the embedded profile Thu Oct 1 14:25:23 unknown SpringBoard[25] <Warning>: Reloading and rendering all application icons.   In the WIX setup I've got, when upgrading the application I have set a requirement to close down applications which might hold on to files which needs to be updated: <util:CloseApplication Id="CloseMyApp" Target="[MyAppExe]" CloseMessage="no" Description="!(loc.MyAppStillRunning)" RebootPrompt="no" ElevatedCloseMessage="no" /> The application on the other hand will capture closing down the window with a "user friendly" dialog box where the user can confirm that he or she wants to close down the application. I've experienced problems with the CloseApplication, and one theory is that the dialog box stops the application from closing. So the question is: Could this be a possible problem? If so - how can I have this confirmation dialog box and still behave properly when the installer asks the application to close down? Must I listen to Win32 messages (such as WM_QUIT/WM_CLOSE) or is there a .NET API which I can use to respond properly to these events?

• JEE6 vs. Spring 3 stack

  I'm starting a new project now. I have to choose technologies. I need something light, so no EJB or Seam. On the other hand I need JPA(Hibernate or alternative) and JSF with IceFaces. Do you think that such stack on Spring 3 deployed on Tomcat is a good choice? Or a JEE6 web application could be better? I'm afraid that JEE6 is a new technology, not well docummented yet. Tomcat seems to be easier to mantain than Glassfish 3. What's your opinion? Do you have any experiences ?

• What's the best C# recommendation engine or framework?

  Is there anyway to use the examples for the "My Media" Microsoft research project? My Media is a "dynamic personalization and recommendation software framework toolkit" ( http://www.mymediaproject.org ), but out of the box it doesn't provide a sample database (only a LINQ-to-SQL .dbml schema), I don't believe it will be easy to re-create by hand. I was hoping to understand recommendation engines and machine learning with this C#/.Net as a testbed, but without a simple quick start or db it seems impractical. Any suggestions? (I guess it's time to switch to Java with Apache's Mahout, Weka or something similar?)
