• Using usbdrive as ram in ubuntu

  In windows it is possible to use usb flash drive as a virtual ram. I wonder if it is possible to do so in ubuntu? If it is, how could one do it? [Edit]: I mean Ready boost equivallent for ubuntu. I know that it is not a perfect replacement for ram and it is not advisable for longterm use. Is creating swap file in a usb flash drive similar to it? Will it demonstrate performance gains over a swap file in a Hard Disk Drive?

  I am writing a report which requires the analysis of performance of each individual team member. This is for a software development project developed using the Unified Process (UP). I was just wondering if there are any existing group & individual appraisal metrics used so I don't have to reinvent the wheel... EDIT This is by no means correct but something like: Individual Contribution (IC) = time spent (individual) / time spent (total) = Performance = ? (should use individual contribution (IC) combined with something to gain a measure of overall performance).... Maybe I am talking complete hash and I know generally its really difficult to analyse performance with numbers but any mathematicians out there that can lend a hand or know a somewhat more accurate method of analysing performance than arbitrary marking (e.g. 8 out 10)

• how to create texture for modelmesh?

  Is there a possibiltiy to create a texture from a meshpart in xna. By getting a flat version of the mesh. So I can create a texture for it and edit that texture(via rendertarget)? I need to get the texture(wich is not yet a texture) so I can put another texture on it. I can create a texture and put it on a certain mesh. But I just cant figure out how I can create a texture with the right size. I also already found out i can use text2dproj in hlsl. But when i do this i get a gray stripe in the look. Is there a better solution?

• Align tetrahedrons

  I'm currently generating tetrahedron meshes in Unity When a player clicks the side of a mesh, a new one spawns aligned with it, like this. I'm not sure how nor can I find any information on implementing a tetra hedron grid. I tried playing around with the vertices until I realized I need to adjust position & rotation. Any ideas? EDIT: To be clear, the second image was manually placed objects in the Unity Editor. I'm looking to make an algorithm that places the meshes correctly.

• How is this number calculated?

  I have numbers; A == 0x20000000 B == 18 C == (B/10) D == 0x20000004 == (A + C) A and D are in hex, but I'm not sure what the assumed numeric bases of the others are (although I'd assume base 10 since they don't explicitly state a base. It may or may not be relevant but I'm dealing with memory addresses, A and D are pointers. The part I'm failing to understand is how 18/10 gives me 0x4.   I was just goofing around in a vm to test what would happen if I purgen unity: sudo apt-get remove --purge unity* I found that I get an startup error, but when I proceed, I got this awesome login screen: It has an sexy effect and is just the gnome style my whole pc has got. So can any one please tell me how I change the default login screen program without having to bother clicking "fix this error" on every boot? Thanks in advance. • Getting a Conexant CX23885 TV Capture Card working

  I'm new to Linux, and am trying to get my Capture Card working on 11.04. The only command that I know to run to find out any information is lspci, which tells me that I have 02:00.0 Multimedia video controller: Conexant Systems, Inc. CX23885 PCI Video and Audio Decoder (rev 04) I've looked at using Me TV, but haven't worked out how to configure it for my card, or what I need to do to get it running. I'm not fussed on what software I use to run the Capture Card, but I've currently got only Me TV installed. Edit: When I run tvtime, I get the following errors: videoinput: Cannot open capture device /dev/video0: No such file or directory mixer: find error: Success mixer: Can't open mixer default, mixer volume and mute unavailable. mixer: Can't open device default/Line, mixer volume and mute unavailable. • Lwjgl or opengl double pixels

  I'm working in java with LWJGL and trying to double all my pixels. I'm trying to draw in an area of 800x450 and then stretch all the frame image to the complete 1600x900 pixels without them getting blured. I can't figure out how to do that in java, everything I find is in c++... A hint would be great! Thanks a lot. EDIT : I've tried drawing to a texture created in opengl by setting it to the framebuffer, but I can't find a way to use glGenTextures() in java... so this is not working... also I though about using a shader but I would not be able to draw only in the smaller region...

  gDEbugger states that OpenGL's program objects only occupy an insignificant amount of memory. How much is this actually? I don't know if the stuff I looked up in mesa is actually that I was looking for but it requires 16KB [Edit: false, confusing struct names, less than 1KB immediate, some further behind pointers] per program object. Not quite insignificant. So is it recommended to create a unique program object for each object of the scene? Or to share a single program object and set the scene's object's custom variables just before its draw call?

• I want a non admin user to install software. What commands do I need to add to sudoers?

  I want to edit the /etc/sudoers file so that a non-admin user can install software via the Software Center in Linux Mint 10. The reason for this is that I want a user to have the capability to install programs, but not make any other configuration changes to the system. So far I have the following (some of these may not make sense, I was just trying whatever I thought of) username ALL= /usr/bin/aptitude username ALL= /usr/bin/dpkg username ALL= /usr/local/bin/apt-get username ALL= /usr/lib/linuxmint/mintUpdate/mintUpdate.py username ALL= /usr/bin/software-center username ALL= /usr/bin/synaptic So far, it allows me to do updates without asking for my password, but it will not let me install software without entering an admin password. I am aware of this question, How can I set the Software Center to install software for non-root users?, but this goes the route of modifying the PolicyKit, whereas I'm interested in a sudo solution, because it seems a simpler way to go.

I cannot find any binary downloads, but cannot build the package, because I have no other linux PC. • adjust resolution on Ubuntu Server 10.04?

  Installed Ubuntu Server 10.04 on an old laptop and I noticed that the system is trying to show the CLI below my screen. This means that if I run a script or a program with a bunch of output, once it is done, I have to press return several times to bring the output to the point where I can actually see it on the screen. I also have to clear the screen to be able to see what I am typing at the current command prompt. The laptop is an EliteGroup 536S with a native screen resolution of 1024 x 768 How can I adjust the resolution for Ubuntu Server 10.04? What file do I need to edit if editing a file is the solution? I've seen posts on how to change the resolution on the desktop version of Ubuntu but not the server version.

• How to handle bugs that I think I fixed, but I'm not entirely sure

  There are some types of bugs which are very hard to reproduce, happen very rarely and seemingly by random. It can happen, that I find a possible cause, fix it, test the program, and can't reproduce the bug. However, as it was impossible to reliably reproduce the bug and it happened so rarely, how can I indicate this in a bugtracker? What is the common way of doing it? If I set the status to fixed, and the solution to fixed, it would mean something completely fixed, wouldn't it? Is it common practice to set the status to fixed and the solution to open, to indicate to the testers, that "it's probably fixed, but needs more attention to make sure" ? Edit: most (if not all) bugtrackers have two properties for the status of a bug, maybe the names are not the same. By status I mean new, assigned, fixed, closed, etc., and by solution I mean open (new), fixed, unsolvable, not reproducible, duplicate, not a bug, etc.

  Lately I've been noticing my keyboard usage more and more and how it affects my productivity. It brought to mind a question/problem that I believe has not been truly solved in the programming community (partially based on individual preferences). Are all/most keyboard layouts inherently flawed for programmers? What changes to your keyboard layout do you feel would increase your productivity most? Edit Remember when answering that there are a number of different factors that could make a keyboard layout flawed. For instance, if you type as fast as you believe you need to, but hitting common keys is uncomfortable, said keyboard layout could be considered flawed.

• Why does quickly package --extras fail (where quickly package doesn't)?

When I run package --extras on a clean template it runs fine. soundboardconfig.py is an unmodified appnameconfig.py the template makes. • Is it convenient to use a XML/JSON generated based system? [closed]

  One of my clients insists that we missed a requisite for the project(a little social network, using PHP + MySql), is that all queries are made from XML / JSON static files (using AJAX) and not directly from the database. Edit: The main reason, stated by client, is a way to economize bandwith. Even the file loading, has to be using AJAX, to avoid server side processing. We will still use a database to store and insert data. These XML / JSON files will be (re) generated whenever any data is changed by CMS or users. As the project was developed without this "technique", we'll have a lot of work ahead, so I would like to avoid that. I'm asking if it's convenient to use a XML generated based system, because I think a database is already "optimized" and secure to deal with a lot of data traffic. Other issue I'm afraid of, is a chance of conflict when a user is trying to read a XML/JSON which is being just generated.

• Cheerp -- C++ for web: advance or regression?

  Recently I've run into Cheerp, a C++ to Javascript compiler, which uses a modified version of clang to generate Javascript code from C++ sources. That makes me wonder: why in the seven kingdoms would someone do this in their right mind? I mean: why would you take a language that is not designed for web at all, that is far more convoluted and bureaucratic, write your code and then compile it into Javascript itself? Can anybody see any advantages in doing so? We surely can discard performance as a reason, because in the end it generates pure Javascript code. Is there anyone here that have real experience with this? P.S.: I'm not sure if this is an on topic question, but this is the most general forum about programming that I could find in the StackExchange network. Edit Although this seems like a subjective question, it is not. I am asking for reasons that this tool could be useful. I got interested at first, but started wondering why would someone use it.

• Keyboard shortcuts don't work continuously

  First I had the problem of the keyboard layout resetting itself on each reboot from DE (german) to EN (us). I followed the advice of using dconf in order to make the DE layout my personal default (see Keyboard layout switches to English each time I reboot). However, after that, my shortcuts didn't work properly anymore. In Firefox, Kile etc. everything works fine while in Nautilus, copying/erasing/pasting is impossible even when I change the keyboard layout back to En (us). Also, I'm not even able to select multiple items using the cursor in Nautilus while every acts normal on the desktop. It's quite confusing. I've read about a similar bug (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/1226962) but since German is a latin language there is no appropriate solution given for my problem. Any help is really appreciated here. Edit: The third reboot resolved the problem so the shortcuts finally work in Nautilus again. Still, selecting multiple objects using the cursor isn't possible.

• How forgiving do you need to be on new employees?

  Recently we have a new developer in our team. We are getting him up to speed and he is picking it all up quite fast, but a new developer means new (foreign) coding styles and ways to solve things. It feels kinda petty to start whining about coding styles at the first three classes he codes, but how forgiving are you guys when dealing with new developers? Do you let them muddle on, and point it out later? Or do you wield the scepter of intolerance immediately? When do you draw the line, or if not, why not? P.S. • Free online service to track software issues from users?

I just deployed a program, and I am looking for a FREE ONLINE service that will allow my users to enter new issues and I will be able to respond with comments etc. Doesn't have to be related to code etc. I want it to be private (i.e. only me and my users can view/edit entries. Update: I think I am misunderstood, I am looking for some private service that works like Microsoft Connect or Uservoice - no code involved at all, just a ilst of bugs / feature requests and it's status, ready to use.
