• Pure Front end JavaScript with Web API versus MVC views with ajax

  This was more a discussion for what peoples thoughts are these days on how to split a web application. I am used to creating an MVC application with all its views and controllers. I would normally create a full view and pass this back to the browser on a full page request, unless there were specific areas that I did not want to populate straight away and would then use DOM page load events to call the server to load other areas using AJAX. Also, when it came to partial page refreshing, I would call an MVC action method which would return the HTML fragment which I could then use to populate parts of the page. This would be for areas that I did not want to slow down initial page load, or areas that fitted better with AJAX calls. One example would be for table paging. If you want to move on to the next page, I would prefer it if an AJAX call got that info rather than using a full page refresh. But the AJAX call would still return an HTML fragment. My question is. Are my thoughts on this archaic because I come from a .net background rather than a pure front end background? An intelligent front end developer that I work with, prefers to do more or less nothing in the MVC views, and would rather do everything on the front end. Right down to web API calls populating the page. So that rather than calling an MVC action method, which returns HTML, he would prefer to return a standard object and use javascript to create all the elements of the page. The front end developer way means that any benefits that I normally get with MVC model validation, including client side validation, would be gone. It also means that any benefits that I get with creating the views, with strongly typed html templates etc would be gone. I believe this would mean I would need to write the same validation for front end and back end validation. The javascript would also need to have lots of methods for creating all the different parts of the DOM. For example, when adding a new row to a table, I would normally use the MVC partial view for creating the row, and then return this as part of the AJAX call, which then gets injected into the table. By using a pure front end way, the javascript would would take in an object (for, say, a product) for the row from the api call, and then create a row from that object. Creating each individual part of the table row. The website in question will have lots of different areas, from administration, forms, product searching etc. A website that I don't think requires to be architected in a single page application way. What are everyone's thoughts on this? I am interested to hear from front end devs and back end devs.

• Camera rotation - First Person Camera using GLM

  I've just switched from deprecated opengl functions to using shaders and GLM math library and i'm having a few problems setting up my camera rotations (first person camera). I'll show what i've got setup so far. I'm setting up my ViewMatrix using the glm::lookAt function which takes an eye position, target and up vector // arbitrary pos and target values pos = glm::vec3(0.0f, 0.0f, 10.0f); target = glm::vec3(0.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f); up = glm::vec3(0.0f, 1.0f, 0.0f); m_view = glm::lookAt(pos, target, up); i'm using glm::perspective for my projection and the model matrix is just identity m_projection = glm::perspective(m_fov, m_aspectRatio, m_near, m_far); model = glm::mat4(1.0); I send the MVP matrix to my shader to multiply the vertex position glm::mat4 MVP = camera->getProjection() * camera->getView() * model; // in shader gl_Position = MVP * vec4(vertexPos, 1.0); My camera class has standard rotate and translate functions which call glm::rotate and glm::translate respectively void camera::rotate(float amount, glm::vec3 axis) { m_view = glm::rotate(m_view, amount, axis); } void camera::translate(glm::vec3 dir) { m_view = glm::translate(m_view, dir); } and i usually just use the mouse delta position as the amount for rotation Now normally in my previous opengl applications i'd just setup the yaw and pitch angles and have a sin and cos to change the direction vector using (gluLookAt) but i'd like to be able to do this using GLM and matrices. So at the moment i have my camera set 10 units away from the origin facing that direction. I can see my geometry fine, it renders perfectly. When i use my rotation function... camera->rotate(mouseDeltaX, glm::vec3(0, 1, 0)); What i want is for me to look to the right and left (like i would with manipulating the lookAt vector with gluLookAt) but what's happening is It just rotates the model i'm looking at around the origin, like im just doing a full circle around it. Because i've translated my view matrix, shouldn't i need to translate it to the centre, do the rotation then translate back away for it to be rotating around the origin? Also, i've tried using the rotate function around the x axis to get pitch working, but as soon as i rotate the model about 90 degrees, it starts to roll instead of pitch (gimbal lock?). Thanks for your help guys, and if i've not explained it well, basically i'm trying to get a first person camera working with matrix multiplication and rotating my view matrix is just rotating the model around the origin.

• Tracking the popularity of a package over time?

  Is there any software or website that allows the user to view a graph of how popular a particular package is? The popcon.ubuntu.com site has raw information on how many people (who have installed popularity-contest) have installed a particular package, but it would be interesting to see how a package's popularity changes over time. I remember using a website that graphed this, but I don't know if it still exist.

• Perforce: Best diff editor on Linux ?

  I'm looking for a Linux based diff viewer/editor for Perforce, which would allow me to retain my VIM editing shortcuts, at the same time having the navigational advantages of a diff editor (goto next/previous edit, view old and new side by side). I have a very good Windows diff viewer(BC3), so please don't suggest anything for Windows. If that editor doesn't require X server (i.e it can be used from cmd line in a putty session), that would be ideal !!

• July, the 31 Days of SQL Server DMO’s – Day 29 (sys.dm_os_buffer_descriptors)

  The sys.dm_os_buffer_descriptors Dynamic Management View gives you a look into the data pages that are currently in your SQL Server buffer pool. Just in case you are not familiar with some of the internals to SQL Server and how the engine works, SQL Server only works with objects that are in memory (buffer pool). When an object such as a table needs to be read and it does not exist in the buffer pool, SQL Server will read (copy) the necessary data page(s) from disk into the buffer pool and cache it. Caching takes place so that it can be reused again and prevents the need of expensive physical reads. To better illustrate this DMV, lets query it against our AdventureWorks2012 database and view the result set. SELECT * FROM sys.dm_os_buffer_descriptors WHERE database_id = db_id('AdventureWorks2012') The first column returned from this result set is the database_id column which identifies the specific database for a given row. The file_id column represents the file that a particular buffer descriptor belongs to. The page_id column represents the ID for the data page within the buffer. The page_level column represents the index level of the data page. Next we have the allocation_unit_id column which identifies a unique allocation unit. An allocation unit is basically a set of data pages. The page_type column tells us exactly what type of page is in the buffer pool. From my screen shot above you see I have 3 distinct type of Pages in my buffer pool, Index, Data, and IAM pages. Index pages are pages that are used to build the Root and Intermediate levels of a B-Tree. A Data page would represent the actual leaf pages of a clustered index which contain the actual data for the table. Without getting into too much detail, an IAM page is Index Allocation Map page which track GAM (Global Allocation Map) pages which in turn track extents on your system. The row_count column details how many data rows are present on a given page. The free_space_in_bytes tells you how much of a given data page is still available, remember pages are 8K in size. The is_modified signifies whether or not a page has been changed since it has been read into memory, .ie a dirty page. The numa_node column represents the Nonuniform memory access node for the buffer. Lastly is the read_microsec column which tells you how many microseconds it took for a data page to be read (copied) into the buffer pool. This is a great DMV for use when you are tracking down a memory issue or if you just want to have a look at what type of pages are currently in your buffer pool. • Interleaving Arrays in OpenGL

  In my pursuit to write code that matches todays OpenGL standards I have found that I am completely clueless about interleaving arrays. I've tried and debugged just about everywhere I can think of but I can't get my model to render using interleaved arrays (It worked when it was configuered to use multiple arrays) Now I know that all the data is properly being parsed from an obj file and information is being copied properly copied into the Vertex object array, but I still can't seem to get anything to render. Below is the code for initializing a model and drawing it (along with the Vertex struct for reference.) • how to reinstall/repair ubuntu 12.04 after dual boot installation fails with windows 7

  I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my preinstalled windows 7 Sony vaio s series laptop following instructions here: http://www.linuxbsdos.com/2012/05/17/how-to-dual-boot-ubuntu-12-04-and-windows-7/ Everything went well and I am able to boot in to windows after complete installation of Ubuntu. Now following instructions on web I tried to add Ubuntu to my BIOS using Easy BCD (but forget to add windows 7 entry). As a result, I loose windows 7 OS and can't boot in to either OS then I successfully repaired windows 7 using recovery CD. Now my problem is that I can't reinstall Ubuntu 12.04 using Live CD it halts every time before disk partition step giving error. "ubi-partman crashed". "ubi-partman failed with exit code 141. further information may be found in /var/log/syslog. Do you want to try running this step again before continuing? If you do not, your installation may fail entirely or may be broken." and, any choice to continue will result in the same error. I looked in to /var/log/syslog but not able to understand what is error. Then, I ran sudo fdisk -l to view my partitions and it shows me only one partition. Probably, all the partitions I created for Ubuntu 12.04 are lost while running windows 7 recovery CD. So, I don't know whether the Ubuntu is still there or probably corrupted. • Should we exclude code for the code coverage analysis?

  I'm working on several applications, mainly legacy ones. Currently, their code coverage is quite low: generally between 10 and 50%. Since several weeks, we have recurrent discussions with the Bangalore teams (main part of the development is made offshore in India) regarding the exclusions of packages or classes for Cobertura (our code coverage tool, even if we are currently migrating to JaCoCo). Their point of view is the following: as they will not write any unit tests on some layers of the application (1), these layers should be simply excluded from the code coverage measure. In others words, they want to limit the code coverage measure to the code that is tested or should be tested. Also, when they work on unit test for a complex class, the benefits - purely in term of code coverage - will be unnoticed due in a large application. Reducing the scope of the code coverage will make this kind of effort more visible... The interest of this approach is that we will have a code coverage measure that indicates the current status of the part of the application we consider as testable. However, my point of view is that we are somehow faking the figures. This solution is an easy way to reach higher level of code coverage without any effort. Another point that bothers me is the following: if we show a coverage increase from one week to another, how can we tell if this good news is due to the good work of the developers, or simply due to new exclusions? In addition, we will not be able to know exactly what is considered in the code coverage measure. For example, if I have a 10,000 lines of code application with 40% of code coverage, I can deduct that 40% of my code base is tested (2). But what happen if we set exclusions? If the code coverage is now 60%, what can I deduct exactly? That 60% of my "important" code base is tested? How can I As far as I am concerned, I prefer to keep the "real" code coverage value, even if we can't be cheerful about it. In addition, thanks to Sonar, we can easily navigate in our code base and know, for any module / package / class, its own code coverage. But of course, the global code coverage will still be low.   Friend of mine and me are working on a flash developed iOS (and later Android) puzzle board game. He's a programmer and I'm a designer/developer so (no surprise) we have a different points of view. anyway, he's method: make small tiles (100x100px) in photoshop join them into the board and then in flash apply effects to the board to avoid repetition (80's not in the good way) my method: precompose the whole board (960x640px+bleed) in photoshop and than mask active and inactive areas in flash what do you think? thank you in advance!

• SEO Pros and cons of having your blog in a subdirectory or subdomain
