• An annoying printing issue with Crystal Reports 2008

  A little background: I have an extremely annoying printing issue with crystal reports. My environment is crystal reports 2008 SP2 on Windows 7 (64bit), Visual studio 2008 and .net framework 3.5 with all the latest updates for everything. The report is designed basically to render a small shelf label of the size (40mm width and 20mm height). In crystal when I set the page size to the above mentioned values and set orientation to portrait and take a preview, everything is displayed as i expect it to be and issuing a print command, it prints absolutely correct. The problem: The problem comes when i print this report from my program (in vb.net), dynamically setting data to some text fields, the result is that crystal somehow changes the print orientation, NOT the paper orientation as in portrait or landscape. Instead of printing from top left towards the bottom right, it rotates the whole output at 90 degrees to the left and reduces everything so small that it is barely visible, although it prints everything out. I have tested it on Intermec PF8t and Zebra GK420d label printers and a whole bunch of laser printers, but with the above stated page settings the output is always the same. Another strange thing that i noticed while experimenting with page sizes if i switch to landscape mode, the print out is correct in its font sizes and positions but then the text gets truncated due to overflowing the page size. Can anyone help me with this. Does crystal has anything like its own print drivers or something. I have tried to ensure to the best of my abilities that it is not a printer driver problem.

  I've build a command-line tool in Java, which I would now like to profile with YourKit. I launch the command-line tool with something like: $ java -classpath .:foo.bar.jar com.foobar.tools.TheTool arg1 arg2 arg3 It runs to completion in less than 2 seconds. Is there a YourKit API that I could add to my tool that would cause it to block until I've connected with YourKit? Is there a YourKit API or a java command-line option that would create a profiling "snapshot" that I could load and analyze later (after the command-line tool has completed) with YourKit?

• rails + compass: advantages vs using haml + blueprint directly

  I've got some experience using haml (+sass) on rails projects. I recently started using them with blueprintcss - the only thing I did was transform blueprint.css into a sass file, and started coding from there. I even have a rails generator that includes all this by default. It seems that Compass does what I do, and other things. I'm trying to understand what those other things are - but the documentation/tutorials weren't very clear. These are my conclusions: Compass comes with built-in sass mixins that implement common CSS idioms, such as links with icons or horizontal lists. My solution doesn't provide anything like that. (1 point for Compass). Compass has several command-line options: you can create a rails project, but you can also "install" it on an existing rails project. A rails generator could be personalized to do the same thing, I guess. (Tie). Compass has two modes of working with blueprint: "basic" and "semantic" usage. I'm not clear about the differences between those. With my rails generator I only have one mode, but it seems enough. (Tie) Apparently, Compass is prepared to use other frameworks, besides blueprint (e.g. YUI). I could not find much documentation about this, and I'm not interested on it anyway - blueprint is ok for me (Tie). Compass' learning curve seems a bit stiff and the documentation seems sparse. Learning could be a bit difficult. On the other hand, I know the ins and outs of my own system and can use it right away. (1 point for my system). With this analysis, I'm hesitant to give Compass a try. Is my analysis correct? Are Am I missing any key points, or have I evaluated any of these points wrongly?

• "Illegal characters in path." Visual Studio WinForm Design View

  I am putting together a lightweight MVP pattern for a WinForms project. Everything compiles and runs fine. However when I attempt to open the WinForm in design mode in Visual Studio I get a "Illegal characters in path" error. My WinForm is using generics and inheriting from a base Form class. Is there a problem with using generics in a WinForm? • Subversion versus Vault

  I'm currently reviewing the benefits of moving from SVN to a SourceGear Vault. Has anyone got advice or a link to a detailed comparison between the two? Bear in mind I would have to move my current Source Control system across which works strongly in SVN's favor Here is some info I have found out thus far from my own investigations. I have been taking some time tests between the two and vault seems to perform most operations much faster. Time tests used the same server as the repository, the same workstation client, and the same project. This is the kind of information i'm looking for. Usage Comparisons Subversion is edit/merge/commit only. Vault allows you to do either edit/merge/commit or checkout/edit/checkin. Vault looks and acts just like VSS, which makes the learning curve effectively zero for VSS users. Vault has a VS plugin, but it only works if you're going to run in checkout-mode. Subversion has clients for pretty much every OS you can imagine; Vault has a GUI client for Windows and a command line client for Mono. Both will support remote work, since both use HTTP as their transport (Subversion uses extended DAV, Vault uses SOAP). Subversion installation, especially w/ Apache, is more complex. Subversion has a lot of third party support. Vault has just a few things. My question Has anyone got advice or a link to a detailed comparison between the two?

  Hi, I'm new to WPF and I have some difficulties when I'm trying to populate a ListView with a list of custom objects. internal class ApplicationCode { public int Code { get; set; } public IEnumerable<string> InstrumentCodes { get; set; } } I have a list of ApplicationCode which I set to ItemsSource to a ListView. I need to display the ApplicationCode.Code as a string and for the rest of the columns a check box which can be checked/unchecked depending if the column name is contained in the InstrumentCodes collection. • Why would javascript click-areas not be working in IE8?

Since the above HTML is generated by a third party control (Janus, http://www.janusys.com/controls), we don't have the source code. has anyone experienced any similar problems with IE8? I've determined that it actually fires the onMouseDownCommand command also the CSS of the button area is different in IE8, it doesn't have color shading that it does in IE7. I can imagine that somewhere the HTML is not valid and IE8 being stricter is not playing along, but where? any advice on how to narrow in on this bug welcome ANSWER: Turned out to be that the application was not checking the navigator.agent for "MSIE 8.0" and was thus treating IE8 has a non-Internet-Explorer browser. Thanks Lazarus for the tip, the IE8 Javascript debugger is very nice, like a Firebug for IE, will be using it more!

If I inspect the page using FireBug, I see that the HTTP status code that was returned is a 200 OK. According to this blog post, I should be seeing this exception. Except I'm not. What am I doing wrong here?

• How to dispatch a new property value in an object to the same property of two other objects

  In WPF, I've three objects exposing the same DependencyProperty (let's say it's an integer). I want all three property values to remain synchronized, i.e. that whenever the int value changes in an object, this value is propagated to the two other objects. I think of multibinding to do the job, but I don't know how to detect which object changed, thus which value should be used and propagated to the other objects. I understand I could solve the problem by creating an X_Changed event in the 3 types and then have each object registering to the two other objects event. I don't like this "manual" way and would prefer to bind the 3 properties together.

  Hello, I have a situation where i have a listbox of comboboxes , mainly it binds to a bridge entity so the object contains foreign keys . • IIS6 configuration for WCF/Silverlight

  I am trying the simple senario of running a WCF service to return Active directory information on a user. (http://rouslan.com/2009/03/20-steps-to-get-together-windows-authentication-silverlight-and-wcf-service/) using Silverlight 4 & .net 4 However, I am being driven insane by trying to set this up in IIS. Currently I have my solution working in VS, but when I try to run the service in ISS a debug window tries to open... (and I can't get rid of it, is is complaining about the WCF call). <basicHttpBinding> <binding name="winAuthBasicHttpBinding"> <security mode="TransportCredentialOnly"> <transport clientCredentialType="Ntlm"/> </security> </binding> </basicHttpBinding> The Insanity: I have got the IIS to successfully call a WCF service (but can't reproduce), I have created 5 projects to try and get this working, but in my 5th I can't even browse the site (says it can't download silverlight application, but mime type are setup). My next step is to install Server2008 on a test machine and try IIS7... as all the various walkthrough's I have found just dont seem to work in IIS6.

• VPython in Eclipse - thinks it has the wrong architecture type.

  Evening, So I've recently installed VPython on my MacBook (OS X, Snow Leopard) - and it works absolutely fine in IDLE and from the command line (interactive mode). However, eclipse has issues. Firstly it couldn't find it (which is a bit of an issue actually with all these 'easy install' python modules - when they don't tell you where they actually install to!) but I searched it out in the depths of Library\Frameworks... and added that to the System PYTHONPATH listbox in Eclipse. Now it can find it, but it says the following: Traceback (most recent call last): File "/Users/duncantait/dev/workspace/Network_Simulation/src/Basic/Net_Sim1.py", line 15, in <module> import visual File "/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/lib/python2.6/site-packages/visual/__init__.py", line 59, in <module> import cvisual ImportError: dlopen(/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/lib/python2.6/site-packages/visual/cvisual.so, 2): no suitable image found. Did find: /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/lib/python2.6/site-packages/visual/cvisual.so: mach-o, but wrong architecture I am guessing that VPython might not be built for a 64-bit architecture (Intel), but the fact remains that it works in both IDLE and command prompt... • WDK build-process hooks: need incremental build with auto-versioning

  I've previously gotten incremental builds with auto-versioning working in a team build setting for user-mode code, but now I'm dealing with the builds of WDK device drivers. It's a whole new ball-game. I need to know what extension point, or hook, is available in the WDK build that occurs after the driver has been selected to be incrementally built, but before it actually starts building the object files. More specifically, I have a .rc file that contains the version of the device driver. I need to update the version in that file ONLY IF the driver is going to be built anyway. If I bump the value in the .rc file prematurely, it will cause the incremental build to kick-off (that is bad). If I wait too long, then the incremental build won't see that I've changed the .rc file. Either way, I do need the WDK to realize that the new version I've placed into the .rc file needs to be built into a new .res file and linked. How do I do this? What suggested extension points should I play with? Is there a link-tutorial on the WDK build process that is particularly revealing regarding this topic?

• C++ .NET DLL vs C# Managed Code ? (File Encrypting AES-128+XTS)

  I need to create a Windows Mobile Application (WinMo 6.x - C#) which is used to encrypt/decrypt files. However it is my duty to write the encryption algorithm which is AES-128 along with XTS as the mode of operation. RijndaelManaged just doesn't cut it :( Very much slower than DES and 3DES CryptoServiceProviders :O I know it all depends on how good I am at writing the algorithm in the most efficient way. (And yes I my self have to write it from scratch but i can take a look @ other implementations) Nevertheless, does writing a C++ .NET DLL to create the encryption/decryption algorithm + all the file handling and using it from C# have a significant performance advantage OVER writing the encryption algorithm + file handling in completely managed C# code? If I use C++ .NET to create the encryption algorithm, should I use MFC Smart Device DLL or ATL? What is the difference and is there any impact on which one I choose? And can i just add a reference to the C++ DLL from C# or should I use P/Invoke? I am fairly competent with C# than C++ but performance plays a major role as I have convinced my lecturers that AES is a very efficient cryptographic algorithm for resource constrained devices. • How can I process an image in .NET for a full-page print with a quality like Windows Photo Gallery d

  I'm writing a printing routing in C#, using the .NET PrintDocument class, handling the OnPrintPage event. I've managed to maximize the margins and print the Image in landscape mode, but it simply does not look as good as when I print the same image file from Windows Photo Gallery (formerly Windows Picture and Fax Viewer), the default image preview program in Windows Vista. I noticed an option there for selecting "Sharpen Image for Printing", but what does that do? I've thought about printing copies of the image from Windows Photo Gallery first, then sending the sheets through the printer a second time to print the custom overlays I need, but it's hard to make it line up every time, since the printer sucks the sheet in without the kind of precision I need... so I really need to do ALL the drawing commands within C#, including the image. Does anyone know how to perform pre-processing on the bitmap so that it prints as nicely as Windows Photo Gallery does it? Are there any simple print drivers that can intercept Photo Gallery printing output as a standard image file (bmp, png, etc.) that can be read by the .NET Image class? I'm all for creativity here.

• Don't Allow link generates a 500 Internal Error

  I'm developing an application for Facebook using the iframe mode and ASP.NET. I'm able to use the new OAuth method that combines the allow and the extended permissions. When I click on the Allow everything works as expected, but when I click on the "Don't Allow" I get a 500 internal error. • emacs frustration with web development

  I really liked flexibility of emacs but it is really annoying to make it work. I want to use it for web development html, css, javascript, php. I first tried emacs-starter-kit . It didn't included nXhtml. Also C-g key binding does not work (they call it starter kit but basic key command does not work). I think it is mapped for git control. That's a frustration for a beginner. Then I replaced emacs-starter-kit with nXhtml. At least C-g is working. But code completion sucks, M-tab does not work. I tried code completion from nXhtml menu with no success. Also NXhtml mode did'nt colorized my file if css is mixed with html. Isn't it recommended for mixed html, css,php files. So why it doesnt work?. Why Emacs folks do not aware of convention over configuration? Dam! ship it something works! Please help me before I am getting crazy. I use Ubuntu 10.04 and emacs-snaphot-gtk 23.1.50-1. Please guide step by step with your working dotfile url. Even I accept I am a dummy it really annoying and frustrating to use emacs.

• WCF identity when moving from dev to prod. environment

  I have a web service developed with WCF. In the development environment the endpoint has the following identity section under the endpoint configuration. <identity> <dns value="myservice.devdomain.local" /> </identity> myservice.devdomain.local is the dns name used to reach the development version of the service. The binding used is: <basicHttpBinding> <binding name ="myBinding"> <security mode ="TransportCredentialOnly"> <transport clientCredentialType="Windows"/> </security> </binding> </basicHttpBinding> I am about to put this into production. The binding will be the same, but the address will be a new production address myservice.proddomain.local. I have planned to change the dns value in the configuration to myservice.proddomain.local in the production environment. However this MSDN article on WCF Identity makes me worried about the impact on the clients when I change the identity. There are two clients - one .NET and one Java using this service. Both of those have been developed against the dev instance of the service. The idea is to just reconfigure the endpoint used by the clients, without reloading the WSDL. But if the identity is somehow part of the WSDL and the identity changes when deploying to prod that might not work. Will the new identity in the prod version cause issues for the clients that were developed using the dev wsdl? Do the Java and the .NET clients handle this differently?

• SQLDeveloper using over 100MB of PGA

  Perhaps this is normal, but in my Oracle 11g database I am seeing programmers using Oracle's SQL Developer regularly consume more than 100MB of combined UGA and PGA memory. I'd like to know if this is normal and what can be done about it. Our database is on the 32 bit version of Windows 2008, so memory limitations are becoming an increasing concern. I am using the following query to show the memory usage: SELECT e.SID, e.username, e.status, b.PGA_MEMORY FROM v$session e LEFT JOIN (select y.SID, y.value pga, TO_CHAR(ROUND(y.value/1024/1024),99999999) || ' MB' PGA_MEMORY from v$sesstat y, v$statname z where y.STATISTIC# = z.STATISTIC# and NAME = 'session pga memory') b ON e.sid=b.sid WHERE (PGA)/1024/1024 > 20 ORDER BY 4 DESC; It seems that the resource usage goes up any time a table is opened in SQLDeveloper, but even when it is closed the memory does not go away. The problem is worse if the table is sorted while it was open as that seems to use even more memory. I understand how this would use memory while it is sorting, and perhaps even while it is still open, but to use memory after it is closed seems wrong to me. Can anyone confirm this? Update: I discovered that my numbers were off due to not understanding that the UGA is stored in the PGA under dedicated server mode. This makes the numbers lower than they were, but the problem still remains that SQL Developer seems to use excessive PGA.

In my dev environment, where speedy deployments are a bit more important for productivity than a production deployment, I have been working on speeding up the process. I have a bash script that has been working decently but has some limitations. I fire up multiple 'svn updates' with the following bash command: (svn update /repo1) & (svn update /repo2) & (svn update /repo3) & These all run in parallel and it works pretty well. I also use this pattern in the rest of the build script for firing off each ant build, then moving the wars to Tomcat. However, I have no control over stopping deployment if one of the updates or a build fails. I'm re-writing my bash script with Python so I have more control over branches and the deployment process. I am using subprocess.call() to fire off the 'svn update /repo' commands, but each one is acting sequentially. I try '(svn update /repo) &' and those all fire off, but the result code returns immediately. So I have no way to determine if a particular command fails or not in the asynchronous mode. import subprocess subprocess.call( 'svn update /repo1', shell=True ) subprocess.call( 'svn update /repo2', shell=True ) subprocess.call( 'svn update /repo3', shell=True ) I'd love to find a way to have Python fire off each Unix command, and if any of the calls fails at any time the entire script stops.

• OpenGL ES, UIView and Status Bar mess

  I have iPhone (iPhoneOS 3.x) OpenGL ES app that: can be in landscape/portrait orientation can be with/without status bar shown I do this by changing status bar orientation and hidden state, then updating OpenGL view frame so it won't overlap status bar and setting projection matrix appropriately. OpenGL view is in portrait orientation at all time. View controller's shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation: method returns false always, so the status bar won't start autorotating when app is in landscape mode. The problem I have is that I want to use some other UIViews, like: UIWebView, MFMailComposeView, MPMediaPicker. I could show them as modals, but this this have some drawbacks: views will always show in portrait orientation, even if they support landscape orientation views will not autorotate, even if they support it What I do is I take OpenGL view of the window with removeFromSuperview, set transform to the other view so it will be in portrait/landscape orientation when it shows up and place the other view on the window with addSubview:. This works fine without the status bar, but with it there are some problems I cannot work out: MPMediaPicker is sized to fit under status bar, but it slides under it anyway MFMailComposeView does not show navigation bar until it autorotates on device orientation change Does anyone has an idea how can I get it to work?
