• XCode - Copy sqlite DB from simulator and copy onto device for testing

  Hello, I am working on a Core Data app, and have populated the sqlite file in the iPhone Simulator with all of the fixtures/data that I use to test the app. I would like to use that sqlite file as a standardized set of testing data. The devices that I test the app on all have different data sets, and I would like to standardize on the one in the simulator. Is there a way in XCode (3 or 4) to add a step to the build/install process that will copy the sqlite file from the iPhone Simulator and install it over the file on the phone (if one exists)? • Why isn't Passenger respecting my custom log format?

  I need to change the log format of my rails app. I put this file in lib directory and required it in development.rb env file. require 'hodel_3000_compliant_logger' config.logger = Hodel3000CompliantLogger.new(config.log_path) and I should get the output of the development.log file as follows: Jun 28 03:05:13 millisami-notebook rails[18243]: Memory usage: 86888 | PID: 18243 I get this exact log when I start my app with script/server (Mongrel). But when I run the app via Passenger, the format being logged is Rails' default. Why doesn't Passenger write to the log file like Mongrel does?

• Suggestions for a mashup application

  I have to write a mashup application for an university course and I have to use some APIs, but I need to choose by myself what to use and what the final application should do. Unfortunately I never made an application like this, so I'm not sure what to do... I don't want to code a stupid app which uses google maps' APIs since the web seems to be full of stuff like this. Have you got any suggestion for me? Is there any mashup web app you want that's still not there?? I can use JAVA, GWT (and google app engine of course) or python, but I also accept suggestions for other languages. Thank you in advance!

• OutOfMemoryException, stack size is huge, large number of threads

  Hello, I was profiling my .net windows service. I was trying to discover OutOfMemoryException and discovered that my stack size is huge and is growing because the the number of threads keeps growing. Each thread gets 1024 KB on Windows x64 machine. Thus when my app has 754 threads the stack size would be 772 MB. The problem for me is that i don't know where these thread come from. Initially my app has a very limited number of threads and they keep growing with time. I have two suspicions - either these threads are created by WCF or by database connection. My application uses both WCF and datasets. Also I tried to profile my app in Ants do Trace i can see large number of System.ServiceModel.Channels.ClientReliableDuplexSessionChannel and this number is increasing with time. I can see thousands of these objects created. So what I want to know is who is creating threads (tools to discover, profilers) and if it is WCF who is creating these threads.

• SilverLight WebApp Calling Webservice in the same solution

  Hi, I have a website solution that is composed of a SilverLight Project and an ASP Site that contains an asmx Webservice. The SilverLight project calls various methods in the Webservice, and this works fine on my home PC. When i publish the site (using 123-Reg if that makes a difference), it appears that the SilverLight app is no longer able to call the webservice. I have tried debugging the app by pointing my local version of the site to my published webservice and i get a "policy" issue. I know that 123 Reg have .Net 3.5 running on their servers, so i would assume that the site should "just work" when i publish it. Am i making a hugely stupid assumption there? Is there anything that i can do to change the "policies" within my app? Or is there another way around what i am trying to do ( i need to keep the webservice, as i want for it to be used from other places, and dont really want to duplicate code and create the same methods within the SilverLight project). • System.UnauthorizedAccessException from Serial Port in VB.NET

  I am using VB.NET 2008 Express Edition to access Serial Port which is a USB to Serial port. Since this is removable, the app user can disconnect it at any time in app. I am getting an unhandled exception when I remove the USB Serial Port. After research, it seems like a known problem in .NET (even in 3.5) I am looking for some solution to get this done. I today start to search articles about MVVM pattern which i want use in my Silverlight app, and i am confused :/ It's hart to me understand how works this pattern. I am find 3 frameworks which supports MVVM pattern in Silverlight - Caliburn, MVVM Light Toolkit and GoodLight. Should i start from own implementation of pattern or use framework? Is this frameworks only a project solutions in which i can insert my code? Which framework is the best for novice and which for professional? I ask for this, cause i must start to rewrite my app from asp.net to Silverlight and i don't know that i can do it first and later (when i understand MVVM pattern and framework) implement this pattern in finished app ? Or from begining rewrite project to MVVM framework?

• Inserting nil Values into Sqlite Database?

  I am working on an iPhone App where I am pulling data from an XML file and inserting it into a sqlite database located in the App. I am able to successfully do this process, but it appears that if I try to sqlite3_bind_text with a NSString that has a value of "nil", the App quickly dies. What i want is follow some design pattern or architecture that will be help me in decoupling my code. I have idea about MVC and MVP architectures for Web App but i need different from that. I want to use OOPS concepts using abstract classes and interfaces, polymorphism etc in my app but not MVC and MVP. I dont know why? • Correct way to (re)launch a Java application with hardware-dependent VM parameters?

  EDIT I don't want to use Java Web Start I've got a Java application that I'd like to run with different VM parameters depending on the amount of memory the system it is launched on has. For example if the machine has 1 GB of memory or less I'd like to pass "-Xmx200m" and "-Xmx400m" if it has 2 GB and "-Xmx800m" if it has 8 GB (these are just examples). Is there a portable way to do this? I've tried having a first tiny Java app (hence portable) that determines the amount of memory available and then launches a new Java app but I don't think this is very clean. As of now I've written Bash shell scripts that invoke the Java app with the correct parameters depending on the config but it only works on Linux on OS X. What is the correct way to solve this? Would application packager package ;) help ?

• Why aren't Admob click callback delegate methods getting called?

  I'm integrating the latest version of the admob sdk (version 20100412) into my app. The ads get displayed, but I need the app to make some changes when an ad is clicked and admob displays a full-screen browser. However, none of the callback methods (willPresentFullScreenModal, didPresentFullScreenModal, willDismissFullScreenModal, and didDismissFullScreenModal) are called, even though other delegate methods are. Why aren't these callbacks being made? They were in the previous versions of the SDK, and the sample app doesn't use them, so it's no help. EDIT: removed the double negative from the question title

• Logging from multiple apps/processes to a single log file

  Our app servers (weblogic) all use log4j to log to the same file on a network share. On top of this we have all web apps in a managed server logging errors to a common error.log. I can't imagine this is a good idea but wanted to hear from some pros. I know that each web app has its own classloader, so any thread synchronization only occurs within the app. So what happens when multiple processes start converging on a single log file? Can we expect interspersed log statements? Performance problems? What about multiple web apps logging to a common log file? The environment is Solaris.

• Rails: Internationalization of Javascript Strings?

  So, we have an existing Rails 2.3.5 app that does not support Internationalization at all. Now, I'm well familiar with Rails I8n stuff, but we have a LOT of output strings inside /javascripts/. I'm not a huge fan of this approach, but unfortunately it is too late to fix it now. How might we internationalize strings stored in JS files in a Rails app? Rails doesn't even serve the JS files... I'm thinking I could always have the Rails app serve up the JS files, but that seems pretty gross. Are there plugins to do this? Yikes.

  I have setup the combination Codeigniter + HMVC + Twitter Bootstrap using this tutorial. I have created two modules named app and session. The app module contains the twitter bootstrap sample. When I click on About link, a new login page is displayed which is the session module configured using <?php echo Modules::run('session/session/index'); ?> The problem I am facing is that when I include the twitter bootstrap in both the views, the app module gets realigned and corousal doesnt work. How do I get the CSS to work with the session module ?

  We currently have a .NET 2.0 web app that uses forms authentication via cookies. Associated with this web app is an old VB6 client application that has its own login system. Currently, the users have to login to the VB6 app, and then when they click on a link, need to authenticate themselves again with the .NET forms authentication system. I'm wondering if it's possible to create a client side .NET application, give it the username and password, and set the forms authentication cookie (without the browser being opened). Is that possible??

• iPhone + alternative to drop downs

  Hello, I am developing native iPhone app. I have one requirement that, there are 5 drop downs in the screen, where user will select each value and based on that there will be a graph generated on screen. Also the drop downs are cascading, meaning that depending on value selected in upper drop down, the values in lower drop downs will change. If it was a web app than, I had no problem as we have drop downs available. But it is a native iPhone app and we don't have drop down in iPhone SDK. • How can I programatically convert SQL data-types to .Net data-types?

  Can anyone show me a way of converting SQL Server data-types (varchar for example) to .Net data-types (String for example). I'm assuming that automatic conversion is not possible? I have an 'EntityProperty' object and would like it to have an appropriate 'Type' property (string, decimal, int32 etc), at the moment this property is just a string - 'int32' for example. A little background: I'm using SQL DMO in an internal code generation app to query a database and generate a stored procedure based DAL from the database. Being an internal app I can take quite a few shortcuts and make quite a few assumptions. To get the app working at the moment this data-type conversion is handled by a Select Case statement which just converts the types to strings and generates a set of properties based on these strings but I would prefer a little more flexibility in being able to handle the types (use of TypeOf etc). Anyone worked on something similar? I know EF, nHibernate, Subsonic etc could do all this for me but in this case, for various reasons, I am having to roll my own. :)

• ACL suggestions needed for a small light framework developed

  Hello all, I've developed a small framework that was needed for the firm that I work. The problem is I've not made a full level framework, as developers are finding tough time to understand what is what, So I made a simple structure with app/controllers, app/models, app/views so that they can clearly separate the code and can get used to higher frameworks later. All other things like components/modules/helpers are just coded for now in a file called app_functions.php. The above framework is derived from cakePHP, not all, but just the framework uses a modified code of dispatcher of cake. The models all work with normal sqls, and views with pure html using a template engine. Now I'm trying to develop a small application over it, it cameout well, but ACL is something which many versions of it have not proved that satisfactory. Can anybody suggest a good ACL. I've checked phpGACL(too heavy), Zend_ACL likely won't be compatible, Cakephp's ACL which wont fit in the structure,as we are not using cake's SQLs, as there too many queries hitting the database for one page display.
