• Are there some methodologies to define a game's rules?

  I would like to write some rules for a game I have in head but I don't know how to do that. So are there some methodologies or modeling tools (like UML) to do that? I'm thinking about a kind of tree of competencies or some kind of map to be sure that the game is well balanced. I always wonder how the team who imagines some powers in magic the gathering for example does it. Do they have some diagrams to be sure the powers or creatures they imagine are well balanced for the entire game? I'm pretty noob in the game creation so I'll be happy with some directions to seek.. Technical terms or basic principles to learn. Thanks for help.

• Testing what is happening inside your BizTalk solution

  As BizTalk developers we all know that one of the common challenges is how to test your BizTalk solution once it is deployed to BizTalk. Hopefully most of us are using the BizUnit framework for testing, but we still have the limitation that it's a very Black Box test. I have put together a sample and video to show a technique where I'm using the Logging Framework from the BizTalk CAT Team at Microsoft and where by BizUnit test is able to make assertions against the instrumentation going through the framework. This means that I can test for things happening such as the fact a component was executed or which branch of an orchestration was executed by simply using my normal instrumented code. • SQL Server Data Tools–BI for Visual Studio 2013 Re-released

  Customers used to complain that the tooling for creating BI projects (Analysis Services MD and Tabular, Reporting Services, and Integration services) has been based on earlier versions of Visual Studio than the ones they were using for their other work in Visual Studio (such as C#, VB, and ASP.NET projects). To alleviate that problem, the shipment of those tools has been decoupled from the shipment of the SQL Server product. In SQL Server 2014, the BI tooling isn’t even included in the released version of SQL Server. This allows the team to keep up-to-date with the releases of Visual Studio. A little while back, I was really pleased to see that the Visual Studio 2013 update for SSDT-BI (SQL Server Data Tools for Business Intelligence) had been released. • WF4 &ndash; It has suddenly got interesting

  I was at Teched two years ago when one of the Microsoft leads said there were three new area’s that we needed to pay attention to for development, namely: WPF WCF WF At the time I was just getting back into development work and had a look at WPF and immediately was sold on the approach. While I haven’t been to involved with WCF directly, I know that some of the guys in my dev team have been and that it too was a success. So what happened to WF? It seemed clunky, and all the demo’s that I saw of it left me scratching my head wondering how if it was going to be useful. Fast forward two years later and while I have had a brief look at WF4, I can immediately see areas where we can use the technology. Does that mean that I think WF4 is the bees knees? I don’t know enough about it yet to really have a solid opinion, but I do think that it is finally going in the right direction. A good introduction to WF4 can be found here.

• Cant install ubuntu 12.10?

  I believe i have tried every trick in the book but Ubuntu just wont install. Windows has no issue with it. I burned a DVD of Ubuntu 12.10 and it has passed all checks, but i keep getting different errors while installing. Mainly while "Creating the Partition in dev" and some times during "Copying files". The errors are: Errno 30, Errno 33, Installer crashed, failed to create partition etc... I have Intel core 2 duo 2.66Ghz, 4gb ram and ASrock motherboard. I really want to install Ubuntu 12.10 and 12.10 only! Also Should i prefer 32bit or 64bit? I have burned a 32bit version. Thank you

  I just got done with college and I have a full time job with a large software company that I have been an intern at for over a year. As an intern I was on the web team doing lots of architecture and developing UI in ExtJS and some Java backend experience. Now as a full time employee I am mainly doing ExtJS applications, which I enjoy a lot, and I want to stay in the web development field, but: Am I limiting my career options with just doing ExtJS stuff? Will experience in ExtJS help or hinder my programming skills? Will I be looked down upon because I'm only gaining experienced with ExtJS?

• How to make Ubuntu LiveCD be able to use USB Flash drive and external hard drive?

  I am booting up Ubuntu 2012.04 LiveCD... and was able to do /sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt and be able to see files in /mnt, which is the main hard drive that can't boot up any more. So to copy files from /mnt to an external hard drive or USB flash drive, I connected a 1TB external hard drive and 2 USB flash drives to the computer, but for some reason, in "File Systems", I can't drag and drop files from /mnt into those external hard drive or USB flash drives? I can't open or look into those drives either... How to make it work?

• Half the time Linux drop into BusyBox; the rest of the time the boot happens normally

  I just installed Ubuntu x64 onto a USB3 Drive from a DVD, and half the time it appears to skip the grub menu and boots directly into BusyBox. Since the USB3 drive is an SSD, I ran through the full installation (installing on an ext4 partition, along side a 1GB boot partition at the start of the disk), skipping the swap partition. Part of the time that the Grub Menu does shows, it boots into BusyBox with an error: ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/[uid] does not exist. Dropping to a shell! What could cause such an issue?

First, here's some background, we got some experienced developers and we also got new hires with almost zero programming practice. we'd like to perform fast and short iterations to release our product. we all team members locate at same site. The advantages of code review before commit I've learned, mentor new hires try to prevent errors, failures, bad designs in early developing cycle learn from others knowledge backup if someone quits But I also got some bad experience, like low efficiency, some changes may be reviewed over days hard to balance speed and quality, especially for newbies some guy felt distrust As to post-review, I just knew little about this, but the most thing I worried about is the risk of losing control, people never review. • How do I install Ubuntu to a USB key?

  If you are hurrying to reply, System ? Administration ? StartUp Disk Creator -- no, that's not what I'm talking about. I want to try Ubuntu 11.04's Unity without touching my existing Ubuntu install. To do this, I need to install the nVidia drivers first (sigh). To do this, I need changes to persist a reboot. To do this, I need to really install Ubuntu on a USB key. How do you do that? What I tried I tried to make a USB key from Testdrive, then boot from it, then choose "Install Ubuntu." The installer refused to install to the installation media itself. I tried, from my installed copy of Ubuntu: sudo kvm /dev/sdb --cdrom .cache/testdrive/iso/ubuntu_natty-desktop-i386.iso ...but the installer didn't detect the disk properly.

• Are there references discussing the use parallel programming as a development methodology? [closed]

  I work on a team which employs many of the extreme programming practices. We've gone to great lengths to utilize paired programming as much as possible. Unfortunately the practice sometimes breaks down and becomes ineffective. In looking for ways to tweak our process I came across two articles describing parallel pair programming: Parallel Pair Programming Death of paired programming. Its 2008 move on to parallel pairing While these are good resources I wanted to read a bit more on the topic. As you can imagine Googling for variations on parallel pair programming nets mostly results which relate to parallel programming. What I'm after is additional discussion on the topic of parallel pair programming. Do additional references exist that my Google-fu is unable to discern? Has anyone used the practice and care to share here (thus creating a reference)?

• Best practices on separating Update and Draw on game loop

  I've been working on my first HTML5 prototype and I found a good model that uses the regular Update and Draw loop we see in game dev. My question is, where does one end and the other begins? The question popped when I wanted to rotate and draw an Image, and I kept wondering if the work of changing the tranformation matrix (that I presume would be a bit expensive since it works on the whole pixel array of an image) and calculating the right position do draw it would characterize drawing work, or maybe not, since after that I may need to check for collision or something similar. Thinkig of it, seems like a silly question, but I would like some advice from more experienced developers. Where does does update ends and draw starts? Thanks in advance.

• Twitter Customer Sentiment Analysis

  The breakable toy that I am currently working on is a twitter customer sentiment analyser. It scrapes twitter for tweets relating to a particular organisation, applies a machine learning algorithm to determine if the content of tweet is positive or negative, and generates reports of the sentiment data over time, correlated to dates, events and news feeds. I’m having lots of fun building this, but I would also like to learn if there is a market for quantified sentiment data. So that I can start to show people what I have in mind I have created a mockup of the simplest and most important report. It shows customer sentiment over time, with important events highlighted. As the user moves their mouse to the right (forward in time) the source data area scrolls up to display the tweets from that time. The tweets are colour coded based on sentiment rating. After I started working on this project I discovered that a team of students have already built something similar. It is a lot of fun to enter your employers name and see what it says.

• Problem with WindowsXp on VirtualBox in 12.10

  When I try to start it I get: Failed to open a session for the virtual machine WindowsXp. The virtual machine 'WindowsXp' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1. Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005) Component: Machine Interface: IMachine {5eaa9319-62fc-4b0a-843c-0cb1940f8a91} and in another dialog: Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908) The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall the kernel module by executing '/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup' as root. If it is available in your distribution, you should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary. When I try to run: $ sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup [sudo] password for umpirsky: sudo: /etc/init.d/vboxdrv: command not found Any idea?

• No mention of ARM versions of Lubuntu .. on the main website?

  Just a question for the Lubuntu team really - I am a huge fan of Lubuntu - thank you and congratulations on creating a great distribution. I am just surprised to notice that, the main website doesn't mention that there are ARM versions - or provide any links to download. Is that because they are 'unofficial' in some sense ? I am running Lubuntu 11.10 on an Allwinner A10 device (the MK802) and it works a treat. Don't "hide your light" guys - tell the world Lubuntu is a cracking OS for ARM systems.

I know it probably doest not belog here, but I could not find any stackexchange site that I could ask this. ok. So, what does this "social is the new search" mean from a webmaster/dev standpoint? While I Know that some people were disappointed that Microsoft didn't Say more about the XBox One, I was pleased with the information we got for developing Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone applications. Add to that the ability to pick the brains of MVPs and product team members was really worth the price of admission. It is going to take a while to digest all of the material and weeks to go through all the videos. In the end there is a lot of information that is going to improve my projects.  I look forward to what Microsoft has coming next seeing every one at the next BUILD. • Bit copy of encrypted home and other partitions

  My laptop is overheating so I need to save all my files before I format the hard drive. I learned how to copy dev/sdX using dd command. However, I am not sure what to copy. Picture from GParted here: http://is.muni.cz/www/256590/fig.png should I copy sda5 and sda6 only? Or sda2 and sda1? I do not need to use these data on another disk, I just want to be able to access them - therefore I want to put them on external hard drive. And last question - how I will then mount my encrypted home? Will it work? Thanks a lot!

• My Favourite Two Buttons in Denali CTP1 SSIS

  In SSIS for SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2008 when you delete something from the design surface it is gone.  The only real way of getting the deleted item(s) back is to revert to a previous version of the package or to redo the deleted items manually.  Neither of these options is particularly great.  I have made this mistake before and cursed not having CTL+Z and CTL+Y.  Denali changes this.  We can now undo and redo.  Very very welcome.  Well done, finally, the SSIS team.
