• Long term planning and agile?

  My team has recently went through the process of laying out a nearly one year plan for our direction of work. We have separated the plan into three phases and each phase will include a couple of launches. I wonder, from an agile point of you, is what we do wrong? I think it's not a bad idea, because we haven't spent too much time on designing anything but the first few steps and it's possible for us to change direction. At the same time it's nice that we don't act with only the near term in sight.

• BUILD 2013 &ndash; Summary

  Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/tmurphy/archive/2013/06/28/build-2013-ndash-summary.aspx BUILD was a wonderful experience.  It was great to see old friends, make new friends, learn about the latest Microsoft technology and party with a bunch of geeks.  It didn't hurt getting some awesome swag. While I Know that some people were disappointed that Microsoft didn't Say more about the XBox One, I was pleased with the information we got for developing Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone applications. Add to that the ability to pick the brains of MVPs and product team members was really worth the price of admission. It is going to take a while to digest all of the material and weeks to go through all the videos. In the end there is a lot of information that is going to improve my projects.  I look forward to what Microsoft has coming next seeing every one at the next BUILD. • Is it possible to auto-mount sshfs

  Is it possible to auto-mount a remote FS using sshfs upon instantiating a proper VPN connection? Allow me to explain the scenario, I'm working remotely, to do that it helps if I can mount my home dir from a server in the office. To do that I need to vpn in. So within network manager I select the relevant VPN and connect. It connects but now I have to drop to the command line and mount my home dir on several machines. If I forget to do one machine my local dev environment isn't as efficient. I suppose I could write a quick bash script to do this but I'd rather get it running automatically when I connect.

• Does it makes sense to backup the whole partition as opposed to their files?

  I know that on Windows it's quite futile to try to backup the "C:" partition file-wise and that's why a full partition backup is needed. Is it OK to backup a the root Linux partition file-wise? Are there any downsides? Clarification Here, I don't care about advantages of partial backups. I'm going to do additional separate backups of /home, etc. What I'm interested in here is the comparison of backup of all files from / vs. backup of the whole partition as device What are the advantages of something like dd if=/dev/sda1 ...?

• Google Analytics - bad experiences? (esp. adult content)

  Hello all, I work for a rather large adult website, and we're currently not using Google Analytics. There is an internal debate going on about whether we should start using Analytics, but there is hestitation from certain parties. The main argument is that they fear that Google will get too much insight into our website, and might even block us from the index as a result based on our adult content. Has anyone here ever had such an experience, or know stories about bad experiences with Google Analytics in such a manner? I personally think it will only improve our website if we were able to use Analytics, but the dev team was asked to look into possible negative effects. Any help would be appreciated.

• Problem with WindowsXp on VirtualBox in 12.10

  When I try to start it I get: Failed to open a session for the virtual machine WindowsXp. The virtual machine 'WindowsXp' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1. Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005) Component: Machine Interface: IMachine {5eaa9319-62fc-4b0a-843c-0cb1940f8a91} and in another dialog: Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908) The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall the kernel module by executing '/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup' as root. If it is available in your distribution, you should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary. When I try to run: $ sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup [sudo] password for umpirsky: sudo: /etc/init.d/vboxdrv: command not found Any idea?

• how to find 3g modem signal strength with out AT commands?

  when i try to find signal strength of my modem using AT+CSQ, the usb device is locked by the network manager. To find the signal strength with AT+CSQ i have to first disable network connection using #nmcli nm wwan off to unlock the device inode /dev/ttyUSBX. Is there any nmcli option to get signal strength or any other option? EDIT The gdbus object for NetworkManager don't have any method like getSignalStrength. Network manager is locking device file preventing to use AT commands. nm-applet was able to display signal strength in system tray. so there should be a way to get signal strength form network manager! nmcli is command line counter part of nm-applet. Can i get signal strength using nmcli? nothing about signal strength is mentioned in its man pages.

There may, of course, be undocumented changes where an update was not previously released separately and so has no associated KB article published. According to the Core Team, Volume Licensed, MSDN and TechNet subscribers get access February 16th, 2011. They are often separate applications on the website, but sometimes share UDFs, etc. We currently have 3 public-facing environment websites - i.e. dev.website.com, test.website.com, and www.website.com. As the programmer, I'm trying to find a good solution to allow for UA testing of multiple projects/tasks at once. Currently, I'm finding myself switching between code branches (using SubVersion). What some of my options?

I am working with a team to select a new content management system for a large membership organization (around 25,000 members). The organization has revenue so I'm not looking for a dirt cheap solution. The site currently uses ASI iMIS which is based on ColdFusion. It's difficult to work with and not flexible for our needs. What other possible alternatives to ASI iMIS are there? Ideally the solution would have some sort of support from the vendor. • How to reduce noise in Skype?

  According to Alsamixer I do have a HDA Intel soundcard with Nvidia MCP77/78 HDMI chip (Realtek sound card on MSI notebook). When I use Skype under Ubuntu 12.04 for video calls, the other side hears background noise such as in Windows when you have your microphone boosted. In fact they can hear everything, even the fans turning on. There is nothing tweaked on Ubuntu's fresh installation. Also tried this site: https://code.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-audio-dev/+archive/alsa-daily/+packages , but there are no *.deb files that I can test if any fix the problem. The question is if there is a way to add/tweak something to enable on software level the noise cancellation like the Windows sound drivers have that option. I use my build in mic.

• Decent FREE Web Based FTP Alternatives?

  Like the subject mentions, I'm looking for a free FTP Alternative that's web based. What I need is the ability to grant people like our marketing team the ability to upload marketing images and instantly have those images show up in ourdomain.com/images/newimage.jpg. I have found plenty of excellent file sharing programs that are essentially drop box and sharepoint alternatives but have yet to find an FTP Alternative. Also ideally multiple account authentication would be great. If anyone is familiar with cPanel I'm essentially looking for their File Manager or something very similar to it (obviously stand alone and preferably free). Does anybody know if anything like this exists?

One of them is a wordy, well intended chap who insists on defining the technical solution to our stories before we put down our estimates with Planning Poker. Cricket world Cup 2011 is about to start and its going to be full of action. • Mount external HD ubuntu 12.10

  Although it's an abundantly treated matter, I'm unable to find an answer valid for my needs. I had a 12.04 installation of ubuntu and I decided to install the 12.10. I copied (using GParted) the partition where my system was to an external hd where there is a windows partition. Then I installed the newest ubuntu version and now I want to take back some files (for example my .emacs) from that partition but when I try to mount it, it is not found as sdb and if I mount it from /dev/usb/hddev0 I don't get any output, only a blinking cursor, no errors, no output. I even tried to mount it as an ntfs disk but the result was the same. It's like the hd cannot be detected. So how can I access data to that disk? Could I get them from GParted terminal instead of Ubuntu one? Thanks

• How do you make a real low profile exit from your current job?

She really wanted to make a very low profile exit, but the news leaked and there really was too much noise -- some bad, some downright embarrassing not to mention management foul mouthing her. All of this, despite her contribution to the team being very substantial. So here's my question: How do you make a real low profile exit from a company? Is something like that even a reality given that a fair number of people will know you in office, not to mention your linkedin and facebook.
