  Why does left(FIELD, replace(nullif(charindex('-', FIELD), 0), null, len(FIELD))) always return null? The idea behind the query is that if charindex() returns 0, then convert the results into null, then convert the null into the length of the field. So if '-' does not exist, show the whole string. For some reason it makes every row equal null. Thank you.

  This is a very generic question about software products. I would like to know what compliance standards are applicable to any software product. I know that question gives away nothing. So, here is an example to what I am referring to. CiSecurity Security Certification/Compliance lists out products ceritified by them to be compliant to the standards published at their website, i.e, cisecurity.org. Compliance could be as simple as answering a questionnaire for your product and approved by a thirdparty like cisecurity or it could apply to your whole organization, for instance, PCI-DSS compliance. I would be very interested in knowing the standards that products you know/designed/created, comply to. To give you the context behind this question: I am the developer of a data-masking tool. The said tool helps mask onscreen html text in a banking web application using filters. So, for instance, if the bank application lists out user information with ssn, my product when integrated with the banking product, automatically identifies ssn pattern and masks it into a pre-defined format.So, I have my product marketing team wanting more buzz words like compliance to be able to sell it to more banking clients. Hence, understanding "compliances that apply to products" is a key research item for me at this point. By which I meant, security compliances. Appreciate all your help and suggestions.

I am trying to login to Google/Youtube using clientLogin, retrieve an AuthSub token, exchange it for a multi-session token and then use it in our upload form. Just a note that we are not going to have other users logging into our (secure) website, this is for our use only (no multi-users). We just want a way to upload videos to our YT account via our own website without having to login/upload to YouTube. Ultimately, everything is dependent on the first step. • Edges on polygon outlines not always correct

  I'm using the algorithm below to generate quads which are then rendered to make an outline like this http://img810.imageshack.us/img810/8530/uhohz.png The problem as seen on the image, is that sometimes the lines are too thin when they should always be the same width. My algorithm finds the 4 verticies for the first one then the top 2 verticies of the next ones are the bottom 2 of the previous. This creates connected lines, but it seems to not always work. How could I fix this? • Is it worth moving from stored procedures to linq ?

  I'm looking at standardizing programming in an organisaiton. Half uses stored procedures and the other half Linq. From what i've read there is still some debate going on on this topic. My concern is that MS is trying to slip in it's own proprietry query language 'linq' to make SQL redundant. If a few years back microsoft had tried to win customers from oracle and sybase with their MSSQL database and stated that it didn't use SQL by their own proprietry query langues ie linq. I doubt many would have switched. I believe that is exactly what is happening now by introducting it into the applicaiton business layer. I have used MS for many years but there is one gripe that I have with them and that is that they change their direction a lot. By a lot I mean new releases of .net, silverlight etc are more than 30% different from previous version. So by the time you become productive a new release is on the way. As things stand now a web developer using .net would need to know either vb.net or c#, xml, xaml,javascript,html, sql and now linq. That doesn't make for good productivity in my books. My concern is that once we all start using linq MS will start changing it between releases. and it will become an ever changing landscape. I believe that 'linq to sql' has already been deprecated. At leas with SQL we are dealing with a more stable and standardized language. Are we looking at a programming revolution or a marketing campaign? As far as I know other languages like Cobol have stayed the same for years. A cobol program from 20 years ago could pick up todays code and start working on it. Could a Vb3 person work on a modern .net web app ? Would these large changes need to be made if the underlying original foundation had been sound ? I worry about following MS shaking roadmap with it's deadends and double backs. are there any architects out there who feel the same ? regards Josef

  ...regardless of font size. Its an mx:Text object. (The Text object is actually being used as a mask so don't know if that's the problem.) If underline is set with the <u> tag in Text.htmlText, or Text.textField.setTextFormat, the underline thickness is always just one pixel which is not acceptable. (There are other problems with <u> so I'm limited to using setTextFormat currently.) Can the thickness of an underline be set through CSS? (textField.styleSheet, etc.) I may have another problem as I already use setTextFormat extensively, and the documentation says you can't use textField.setTextFormat if you use textField.setStyleSheet. I primarily need the underline to simulate correctly the look for an anchor tag.

  I think the default dir gets a trailing slash. But what if the user selects a different directory? Is there a way for the INSTALLDIR to NOT have a trailing slash? It's not that I want it to not have a trailing slash. I want to know if I can count on it, so that, for example, [INSTALLDIR]Filter.dll ...will always resolve to a real, valid filesystem path. Currently I use [INSTALLDIR]\Filter.dll and I get a double-slash in there. It's valid and resolves, but I'd like to eliminate the double slash. thanks.

• Android ListView background colors always showing grey.

  I have a ListView that I'm populating from a custom ListAdapter. Inside the Adapter (in the getView(int, View, ViewGroup) method) I'm setting the background color of the View using setBackgroundColor(int). The problem is that no matter what color I set the background to it always comes out a dark grey. It might also be worth noting that I'm using the Light theme. Relevant (simplified) bits of code: AndroidManifest.xml: <activity android:name=".MyActivity" android:theme="@android:style/Theme.Light" /> MyAdapter.java: @Override public View getView(int position, View convertView, ViewGroup parent) { LayoutInflater inflater = LayoutInflater.from(mContext); View av = inflater.inflate(R.layout.my_row, parent, false); av.setBackgroundColor(R.color.myRow_red); mName = (TextView) av.findViewById(R.id.myRow_name); mName.setText("This is a name"); return av; } Any ideas/suggestions?

  In my fortran code I made the following call to dnrm2 routine d = dnrm2(n, ax, 1) Just a simple call that would return me a double precision result. The problem is whether I should declare the function at the start of my script. I found that if I don't declare it, and when I compile the code in 32 bit Windows, then the result is correct. But if I compile the code in 64 bit Windows, then the result won't be correct. Why this is so? Is external routine must always be declared?

• Why does TheyWorkForYou (TWFY) web API always returns '{}'

  I'm calling a web API exposed by TheyWorkForYou (TWFI). http://www.theyworkforyou.com/api/ I'm using the Python bindings provided by twfython: http://code.google.com/p/twfython/ I wrote some code to call this API a few months ago, at which time it worked fine. But now I dig it out to run it again, no matter what query I ask of the API, it always returns '{}' (an empty dictionary). For example the following code, which should return a list of all MPs: from twfy import TWFY API_KEY = 'XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX' twfy = TWFY.TWFY(API_KEY) print twfy.api.getMPs(output='js') Am I being really dumb? What else should I check?

• CacheManager.getCacheFileBaseDir() always returns null

  Hi, I've been trying to use the CacheManager for caching some http requests but it failed every time with a nullpointer exception. After some digging I believe I found out why: CacheManager.getCacheFileBaseDir() always returns null so when I try to use CacheManager.getCacheFile() or CacheManager.saveCacheFile() they fail. CacheManager.cacheDisabled() returns false :S I hadn 't created a cache partition via the AVD manager so I thought the problem lie there. But after creating a cache partition getCacheFile() still return null: 03-16 00:25:16.321: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(296): Caused by: java.lang.NullPointerException 03-16 00:25:16.321: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(296): at android.webkit.CacheManager.getCacheFile(CacheManager.java:296) What could be the problem?   I have a DevXpress ASPXGridview, and I am using ObjectDataSource for custom paging. This is my objectDataSource code on aspx page. <asp:ObjectDataSource ID="ObjectDataSource1" runat="server" SelectMethod="GetItems" EnablePaging="true" TypeName="BLL.Item" StartRowIndexParameterName="startIndex" MaximumRowsParameterName="pageSize" SelectCountMethod="GetTotalItems" > <SelectParameters> <asp:ControlParameter ControlID="hfNumber" Name="number" Type="string" /> <asp:ControlParameter ControlID="hfDesc" Name="description" Type="string" /> </SelectParameters> </asp:ObjectDataSource> When I put breakpoints in BLL code, I see that it always executes with startIndex and pageSize as 0. It does pass the other two selectparameters correctly. Also the SelectCountMethod (GetTotalItems) never gets executed.

• TextToSpeech setOnUtteranceCompletedListener always returns -1 error?

  I've been working with Android's TTS functions with general success however, one piece of it refuses to work for me; I can not successfully assign an OnUtteranceCompletedListener to my TextToSpeech object. I've tried implementing OnUtteranceCompletedListener in one of my classes and I've tried creating a new, stand-alone OnUtteranceCompletedListener instance. Both approaches are simple enough to implement and appear to yield proper listeners without exceptions...yet setOnUtteranceCompleteListener(myListener) ALWAYS returns -1 (ERROR). The documentation for this seems straight forward. Has anyone gotten this to work? I'm targeting SDK 4. Are there known issues with this with SDK4/v1.6?
