  • Threads are facing deadlock in socket program [migrated]

    - by ankur.trapasiya
    I am developing one program in which a user can download a number of files. Now first I am sending the list of files to the user. So from the list user selects one file at a time and provides path where to store that file. In turn it also gives the server the path of file where does it exist. I am following this approach because I want to give stream like experience without file size limitation. Here is my code.. 1) This is server which gets started each time I start my application public class FileServer extends Thread { private ServerSocket socket = null; public FileServer() { try { socket = new ServerSocket(Utils.tcp_port); } catch (IOException e) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e.printStackTrace(); } } @Override public void run() { try { System.out.println("request received"); new FileThread(socket.accept()).start(); } catch (IOException ex) { ex.printStackTrace(); } } } 2) This thread runs for each client separately and sends the requested file to the user 8kb data at a time. public class FileThread extends Thread { private Socket socket; private String filePath; public String getFilePath() { return filePath; } public void setFilePath(String filePath) { this.filePath = filePath; } public FileThread(Socket socket) { this.socket = socket; System.out.println("server thread" + this.socket.isConnected()); //this.filePath = filePath; } @Override public void run() { // TODO Auto-generated method stub try { ObjectInputStream ois=new ObjectInputStream(socket.getInputStream()); try { //************NOTE filePath=(String) ois.readObject(); } catch (ClassNotFoundException e) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e.printStackTrace(); } File f = new File(this.filePath); byte[] buf = new byte[8192]; InputStream is = new FileInputStream(f); BufferedInputStream bis = new BufferedInputStream(is); ObjectOutputStream oos = new ObjectOutputStream( socket.getOutputStream()); int c = 0; while ((c = bis.read(buf, 0, buf.length)) > 0) { oos.write(buf, 0, c); oos.flush(); // buf=new byte[8192]; } oos.close(); //socket.shutdownOutput(); // client.shutdownOutput(); System.out.println("stop"); // client.shutdownOutput(); ois.close(); // Thread.sleep(500); is.close(); bis.close(); socket.close(); } catch (IOException ex) { ex.printStackTrace(); } } } NOTE: here filePath represents the path of the file where it exists on the server. The client who is connecting to the server provides this path. I am managing this through sockets and I am successfully receiving this path. 3) FileReceiverThread is responsible for receiving the data from the server and constructing file from this buffer data. public class FileReceiveThread extends Thread { private String fileStorePath; private String sourceFile; private Socket socket = null; public FileReceiveThread(String ip, int port, String fileStorePath, String sourceFile) { this.fileStorePath = fileStorePath; this.sourceFile = sourceFile; try { socket = new Socket(ip, port); System.out.println("receive file thread " + socket.isConnected()); } catch (IOException ex) { ex.printStackTrace(); } } @Override public void run() { try { ObjectOutputStream oos = new ObjectOutputStream( socket.getOutputStream()); oos.writeObject(sourceFile); oos.flush(); // oos.close(); File f = new File(fileStorePath); OutputStream os = new FileOutputStream(f); BufferedOutputStream bos = new BufferedOutputStream(os); byte[] buf = new byte[8192]; int c = 0; //************ NOTE ObjectInputStream ois = new ObjectInputStream( socket.getInputStream()); while ((c = ois.read(buf, 0, buf.length)) > 0) { // ois.read(buf); bos.write(buf, 0, c); bos.flush(); // buf = new byte[8192]; } ois.close(); oos.close(); // os.close(); bos.close(); socket.close(); //Thread.sleep(500); } catch (IOException ex) { ex.printStackTrace(); } } } NOTE : Now the problem that I am facing is at the first time when the file is requested the outcome of the program is same as my expectation. I am able to transmit any size of file at first time. Now when the second file is requested (e.g. I have sent file a,b,c,d to the user and user has received file a successfully and now he is requesting file b) the program faces deadlock at this situation. It is waiting for socket's input stream. I put breakpoint and tried to debug it but it is not going in FileThread's run method second time. I could not find out the mistake here. Basically I am making a LAN Messenger which works on LAN. I am using SWT as UI framework.

  • Game Timer In C++

    I need to be able to find out how many milliseconds since that last update. Is there any way I can find it out with time rather then a thread that counts like I did below? #include <iostream> #include<windows.h> #include<time.h> #include<process.h> using namespace std; int Timer = 0; int LastTimer = 0; bool End = false; void Update(int Ticks) { } void UpdateTimer() { while (true) { LastTimer = Timer; Timer++; Sleep(1); if (End) break; } } int WINAPI WinMain(HINSTANCE par1, HINSTANCE par2, LPSTR par3, int par4) { _beginthread(UpdateTimer, 0, NULL); while(true) { if (Timer == 1000) Timer = 0; Update(Timer - LastTimer); } }

MATE isn’t available in Ubuntu’s repositories, but the MATE developers offer an official repository for Ubuntu. Unlike some methods that recommend you use Linux Mint’s repository on Ubuntu, this won’t mess up your system. - by Jason Fitzpatrick
    If you’re looking to pick up a Kindle Fire on the cheap, Amazon is offering them–refurbished with a 1-year warranty–for $139. $139 is an even better price than we see on our local Craiglist (where Kindle Fires usually go for $180 or so) and it comes with a 1-year warranty. We’ve purchased several Kindle Keyboard units through Amazon’s refurbished warehouse deals over the last two years and, frankly, we can’t tell them apart from the brand new ones–if you’re looking to pick up a Kindle Fire this is a great deal. • Ceská obchodní banka, a.s. Upgrades to Oracle Database 11g On Time, On Budget and without Disrupting Business Operations

    - by jgelhaus
    You want the new features of the latest release, but upgrading a database is one of those things DBAs can "lose sleep" over.  Ceská obchodní banka, a.s."CSOB" needed to upgrade its production systems in the Czech Republic and Slovakia that supported 90 key applications for its retail, corporate, internet, and ATM services from Oracle Database 9i to Oracle Database 11g with simultaneous migration from Alpha processors/OpenVMS-based hardware to a Power7, AIX system. Oracle Consulting helped to complete the upgrade within schedule and budget, while meeting tight restrictions on downtime. Knowledge transfer by Oracle Consulting to the bank’s IT team has improved self-sufficiency in support and maintenance while the technical and advisory services of Oracle Consulting Expert Services continue to optimize performance and availability while lowering cost of ownership. Read how CSOB maximized the value of its investment in Oracle Database technology with an upgrade to Oracle Database 11g.

  • What are the relative merits for implementing an Erlang-style "Continuation" pattern in C#

    - by JoeGeeky
    What are the relative merits (or demerits) for implementing an Erlang-style "Continuation" pattern in C#. I'm working on a project that has a large number of Lowest priority threads and I'm wondering if my approach may be all wrong. It would seem there is a reasonable upper limit to the number of long-running threads that any one Process 'should' spawn. With that said, I'm not sure what would signal the tipping-point for too many thread or when alternate patterns such as "Continuation" would be more suitable. In this case, many of the threads do a small amount of work and then sleep until woken to go again (Ex. Heartbeat, purge caches, etc...). This continues for the life of the Process.

  • Login timeout disable?

    - by Sk606
    How can I disable automatic timeout entries in the login screen? Allow me to explain. My typical experience goes something like this: I put my laptop to sleep, then wake it. When it wakes, it comes up with the login screen. I type in my password and it will usually reject it, with a message indicating the login timer has expired. I then enter my password a second time and it logs in. Not the end of the world, but annoying nonetheless. Any suggestions?

  • KDE Sometimes Glitches On Wakeup

    - by Mew
    Well, a picture is work 1k words: Looks bad, huh? I am using the 331-updates latest 331.67 drivers from NVidia's website on a Dell Latitude e6400. Everything else is up-to-date. This only happens when I resume from sleep, or I switch to a VT and back. It also doesn't ALWAYS happen, which I find odd. Graphics Card: Nvidia Quadro NVS160M UPDATE AFTER TESTING: This problem only exists with KDE (specifically QT). I can go into Unity or Mint or any non QT-based GUI and it works perfectly with no resume errors. UPDATE: This only happens when I use KWin (and KDE). I have upgraded to 14.04 and the problem is not occurring as frequently. Also, sometimes this effect doesn't happen, but instead the top menu bar simply goes out of focus with the rest of the screen goes blank.

  • How to Use a 64-bit Web Browser on Windows

    - by Chris Hoffman
    64-bit version of Windows don’t use 64-bit browsers by default – they’re still in their infancy, although even Adobe Flash now supports 64-bit browsers. Using a 64-bit browser can offer significant performance benefits, according to some benchmarks. This article is for Windows users – 64-bit Linux distributions include 64-bit browsers, so you don’t have to do anything special on Linux. • How To Prevent Your Computer From Waking Up Accidentally

    - by Chris Hoffman
    If you find your Windows computer waking from sleep for no apparent reason, your computer is either being woken up by a hardware device – such as your mouse — or scheduled task set to wake your computer. In some cases, the cause may not be obvious. For example, if your laptop occasionally wakes up for no apparent reason, it’s possible that the floor is shaking a bit, causing the mouse to vibrate slightly and wake the computer. • Android Loading Screen: How do I use a stack to load elements?

    - by tom_mai78101
    I have some problems with figuring out what value I should put in the function: int value_needed_to_figure_out = X; ProgressBar.incrementProgressBy(value_needed_to_figure_out); I've been researching about loading screens and how to use them. Some examples I've seen have implemented Thread.sleep() in a Handler.post(new Runnable()) function. To me, I got most of that concept of using the Handler to update the ProgressBar, while pretending to do some heavy crunching work. So, I kept looking. I have read this thread here: How do I load chunks of data from an assest manager during a loading screen? It said that I can try using a stack it needs to load, and adding a size counter as I add elements to the stack. What does it mean? This is the part where I'm totally stumped. If anyone would provide some hints, I'll gladly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

  • BlissControl Is a Settings Management Dashboard for Popular Social Networks

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
    BlissControl is a simple web app that organizes the different settings menus of over a dozen social networks and services into a streamlined dashboard to help you change your profile pic, privacy settings, and more. Much like previously reviewed NotificationControl and MyPermissions (which help you check and set email notifications and app permissions, respectively), BlissControl also takes the very convoluted menus of web-apps and social media sites and makes them super easy to navigate. You can easily click right through the page you need on Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, and more–you’ll no longer need to visit each service and click through a maze of menus to get to the right place to change your password or swap your profile pic. BlissControl is simply a dashboard that directs you to the appropriate page within the service you already use–you never share your login credentials with BlissControl. • How to Tweak the Low Battery Action On Your Windows 7 Laptop

Here’s how to tweak the settings so it alerts you or goes into sleep mode at a more reasonable time. Note: obviously if you don’t have a great battery in your laptop, you should probably be careful with these settings or you might lose data. • Suspend/hibernate doesn't work on an Asus Laptop

    - by b1ackjosh
    I'm having issues suspending 11.04 on my new Asus U30sd-XA1 laptop, it's a new laptop on the market and I'm wondering if anyone else has had this issue and maybe have a fix for it. Basically whenever I close or put the laptop to sleep the screen goes black but the video card doesn't actually turn off, then the fan spins up even faster then it was before and gets hot. I did see that some people were having similar issues on other laptops and they set the kernal back. I'm newish to ubuntu and I'm not super comfortable messing with the kernal. If anyone has any other solutions that would be great. I am not using the 520m nvidia driver because it won't load unity after it's installed. I've also heard quite a few bad things about the drivers on the ubuntu forums, so I deactivated the driver.

  • Using Interlocked.Exchange(ref Enum, 1) to prevent re-entrancy [migrated]

System.Threading.Interlocked.CompareExchange<TrustPointStatusEnum> (ref tp.TrustPointStatus, TrustPointStatusEnum.NotInitalized,TrustPointStatusEnum.Loading); Based on my research think I have the following options: I can use Threading.SpinWait (for very quick IO tasks) at the cost of CPU I can use Sleep() which has an unreliable wake up time I'm not sure of any other option, but what I want to make sure of is that all these options work with the .NET 4 async and await keywords, especially if I use Task to run them on a background thread

  • Throttle and overheating on Dell XPS Studio 1645

    - by Ross
    I realise there is an older thread on the very subject but that seems to be pretty dead. I just got a Dell Studio XPS 1645 laptop and the fan noise and overheating is pretty ridiculous. This is actually a well known problem with the laptop that is apparently solved with the combination of a BIOS update and the purchase of their 130w charger. I plan on buying this charger as soon as possible, however I've noticed that since installing Ubuntu the fan noise has became more permanent and the overheating is quite a bit worse too. I've had to turn it off twice to let it cool down for an hour or so because it starts seriously affecting the performance. It makes watching things, listening to music or leaving the laptop on while I sleep a real pain. If anyone has some new information on this issue or could help out in anyway at all I'd be very grateful. Thanks.

  • How to completely shutdown Ati card

    - by Celso
    I would like to know how do i prevent my Ati card from turning on when i enter on ubuntu 11.10. My bios only lets-me shutdown intel hd card or leave the both on but i want to know if is possbible to completely shutdown without having to access to the bios.( if is possible to turn of without using Vgaswitcheroo even better!) My system is: Acer 3820tg-- intel core i3 350M, 2.26 Ghz L3, Ati Mobility Radeon HD 5470 up to 2138 MB hyper memory, 13,3" HD LED LCD, 4gb DDR3, SSD corsair 60GB sata 2. EDIT: I now know what is missing on the answers! I edited /etc/rc.local file and added the next lines: Sleep 3 echo ON /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch echo IGD /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch echo OFF /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch And then save the file and restart. It should be possible to use only the intel card now. By the way, i didn't blacklisted the radeon driver because doing it make my ati card wake up. (use it at your own risk. i only tested in my system)
