• How can we leverage NSAppearance?

  I was reading the Cocoa documentation and stumbled across some new features in the 10.9 API. From the docs I gather that the NSAppearance class and a related protocol NSAppearanceCustomization Appear to be a means of customizing the appearance of NSView and its descendants. An NSAppearance object represents a file that specifies a standard or custom appearance that applies to a subset of UI elements in an app. An app can contain multiple appearance files and—because NSAppearance conforms to NSCoding—you can use Interface Builder to assign UI elements to an appearance. Typically, you customize a window by using Xcode to create an appearance file that contains the views you want to customize and the custom art that should be applied to them. Xcode transforms the file’s art content into a runtime format that AppKit can draw when the specified views are displayed. Well that all sounds neat and promising, but nowhere in the documentation can I find what an appearance file is or how to make one. Google searches are coming up empty other than for the thin documentation I have already read. I do see that UIKit has a similar sounding UIAppearance class, but from what I can tell this is not a straight port of the UIKit class. Does anybody know how to make this magic "appearance file" and what exactly we can do with it?

• Design approach, string table data, variables, stl memory usage

  I have an old structure class like this: typedef vector<vector<string>> VARTYPE_T; which works as a single variable. This variable can hold from one value over a list to data like a table. Most values are long,double, string or double [3] for coordinates (x,y,z). I just convert them as needed. The variables are managed in a map like this : map<string,VARTYPE_T *> where the string holds the variable name. Sure, they are wrapped in classes. Also i have a tree of nodes, where each node can hold one of these variablemaps. Using VS 2008 SP1 for this, i detect a lot of memory fragmentation. Checking against the stlport, stlport seemed to be faster (20% ) and uses lesser memory (30%, for my test cases). So the question is: What is the best implementation to solve this requirement with fast an properly used memory ? Should i write an own allocator like a pool allocator. How would you do this ? • jQuery modal Dialog over iFrame

  I am using jQuery UI dialog for modal popups. I have some iframes in my page as well. The iFrame (z-Index = 1500) sits on top of the parent page (z-index =1000). I open the modal dialog from the parent page. I am trying to set the z-index using $('modal').dialog('option','zIndex',3000); but this is not working. I also tried stack:true (to stack it on top), and .dialog( 'moveToTop' ) as well, but they don't seem to work. • Modify python USB device driver to only use vendor_id and product_id, excluding BCD

  I'm trying to modify the Android device driver for calibre (an e-book management program) so that it identifies devices by only vendor id and product id, and excludes BCD. The driver is a fairly simply python plugin, and is currently set up to use all three numbers, but apparently, when Android devices use custom Android builds (ie CyanogenMod for the Nexus One), it changes the BCD so calibre stops recognizing it. The current code looks like this, with a simple list of vendor id's, that then have allowed product id's and BCD's with them: VENDOR_ID = { 0x0bb4 : { 0x0c02 : [0x100], 0x0c01 : [0x100]}, 0x22b8 : { 0x41d9 : [0x216]}, 0x18d1 : { 0x4e11 : [0x0100], 0x4e12: [0x0100]}, 0x04e8 : { 0x681d : [0x0222]}, } The line I'm specifically trying to change is: 0x18d1 : { 0x4e11 : [0x0100], 0x4e12: [0x0100]}, Which is, the line for identifying a Nexus One. My N1, running CyanogenMod 5.0.5, has the BCD 0x0226, and rather than just adding it to the list, I'd prefer to eliminate the BCD from the recognition process, so that any device with vendor id 0x18d1 and product id 0x4e11 or 0x4e12 would be recognized. The custom Android rom doesn't change enough for the specifics to matter. The syntax seems to require the BCD in brackets. How can I edit this so that it matches anything in that field?

• cookieless sessions with ajax

  ok, i know you get sick from this subject. me too :( I've been developing a quite "big application" with PHP & kohana framework past 2 years, somewhat-successfully using my framework's authentication mechanism. but within this time, and as the app grown, many concerning state-preservation issues arisen. main problems are that cookie-driven sessions: can't be used for web-service access ( at least it's really not nice to do so.. ) in many cases problematic with mobile access don't allow multiple simultaneous apps on same browser ( can be resolved by hard trickery, but still.. ) requires many configurations and mess to work 100% right, and that's without the --browser issues ( disabled cookies, old browsers bugs & vulnerabilities etc ) many other session flaws stated in this old thread : http://lists.nyphp.org/pipermail/talk/2006-December/020358.html After a really long research, and without any good library/on-hand-solution to feet my needs, i came up with a custom solution to majority of those problems . Basically, i'ts about emulating sessions with ajax calls, with additional security/performance measures: state preserved by interchanging SID(+hash) with client on ajax calls. state data saved in memcache(or equivalent), indexed by SID security achieved by: appending unpredictible hash to SID egenerating hash on each request & validating it validating fingerprint of client on each request ( referrer,os,browser etc) (*)condition: ajax calls are not simultaneous, to prevent race-condition with session token. (hopefully Ext-Direct solves that for me) From the first glance that supposed to be not-less-secure than equivalent cookie-driven implementation, and at the same time it's simple, maintainable, and resolves all the cookies flaws.. But i'm really concerned because i often hear the rule "don't try to implement custom security solutions". I will really appreciate any serious feedback about my method, and any alternatives. also, any tip about how to preserve state on page-refresh without cookies would be great :) but thats small technical prob.   HI, I have the following entities I'm trying to map: public class Product { public int ProductId { get; private set; } public string Name { get; set; } } public class SpecialProduct : Product { public ICollection<Option> Options { get; private set; } } public class Option { public int OptionId { get; private set; } } And the following mappings: public class ProductMap : ClassMap<Product> { public ProductMap() { Id( x => x.ProductId ); Map( x => x.Name ); } public class SpecialProductMap : SubclassMap<SpecialProduct> { public SpecialProductMap() { Extends<ProductMap>(); HasMany( p => p.Options ).AsSet().Cascade.SaveUpdate(); } } public class OptionMap : ClassMap<Option> { public OptionMap() { Id( x => x.OptionId ); } } The problem is that my tables end up like this: Product -------- ProductId Name SpecialProduct -------------- ProductId Option ------------ OptionId ProductId // This is wrong SpecialProductId // This is wrong There should only be the one ProductId and single reference to the SpecialProduct table, but we get "both" Ids and two references to SpecialProduct.ProductId. • How can I internationalize strings representing C# enum values?

  I've seen many questions and answers about mapping strings to enums and vice-versa, but how can I map a series of localized strings to enums? Should I just create an extension method like this that returns the proper string from a resource file? Is there a way to localize attributes (like "Description") that are used in solutions like this? Which is the preferred solution - extension method or attributes. It seems to me that this isn't the intended purpose of attributes. In fact, now that I think about it, if I were to use an extension method an attribute seems like something I'd use to specify a key in a resource file for the localized string I want to use in place of the enum value. EDIT - example: Given the following enum, public enum TransactionTypes { Cheque = 1, BankTransfer = 2, CreditCard = 3 } I would like a way to map each type to a localized string. I started off with an extension method for the enum that uses a switch statement and strongly typed references to the resource file. However, an extension method for every enum doesn't seem like a great solution. I've started following this to create a custom attribute for each enumerated value. The attribute has a base name and key for the resource file containing localized strings. In the above enum, for example, I have this: ... [EnumResourceAttribute("FinancialTransaction", "Cheque")] Cheque = 1, ... Where "FinanacialTransaction" is the resx file and "Cheque" is the string key. I'm trying to create a utility method to which I could pass any value from any enumeration and have it return the localized string representation of that value, assuming the custom attribute is specified. I just can't figure out how to dynamically access a resource file and a key within it.

Given that there are multiple plugins, each of them uses this one class, but they need to work with different tables. • NHibernate DuplicateMappingException when mapping abstract class and subclass

  I have an abstract class, and subclasses of this, and I want to map this to my database using NHibernate. I'm using Fluent, and read on the wiki how to do the mapping. But when I add the mapping of the subclass an NHibernate.DuplicateMappingException is thrown when it is mapping. Why? • Error with perl script using module Mail::Sendmail

  I am using below code to connect to SMTP server where authentication is required for connection. While executing script I am getting an error message saying "Error sending mail: Connection error from mail.utiba.com on port 465 ()". However the connection to the mail server is working fine, I can connect to the mail server using other mail clients. Please suggest what I am doing wrong here. • Notifying view controller when subview touch events occur.

  I have a UIViewController whose view has a custom subview. This custom subview needs to track touch events and report swipe gestures. Currently I put touchesBegan, touchesMoved, touchesEnded and touchesCancelled in the subview class. With some extra logic I am able to get swipe gestures and call my handleRightSwipe and handleLeftSwipe methods. So now when I swipe within the subview it calls its local swipe handling methods. This all works fine. But what I really need is for the handleRightSwipe and handleLeftSwipe methods to be in the view controller. I could leave them in the subview class but then I'd have to bring in all the logic and data as well and that kind of breaks the MVC idea. So my question is is there a clean way to handle this? Essentially I want to keep my touch event methods in the subview so that they only trigger for that specific view. But I also want the view controller to be informed when these touch events (or in this case swipe gestures) occur. Any ideas? Thanks.

  Hi, we are currently developing a couple of custom asp.net server controls. Now we'd like to add some Ajax support to some of them. Now basically there would be two options Microsoft Ajax & Microsoft Ajax Control Toolkit jQuery I worked already with the Control Toolkit, writing a complete Extender and it was quite intuitive, once you understand the story behind. But I also like the simplicity of jQuery. So I'd like to hear some of you what you would like to go for (advantages/disadvantages of each of them), considering also that we're mainly dealing with Microsoft technologies. Would you go more for the toolkit or jQuery,...or both? //Edit: I just made some tests and I have to admit that at the moment I find the Toolkit better due to the integration. My purpose is mainly for using it on the server controls, so with the toolkit I have corresponding classes on the server-side where I can do something like CalendarExtender toolkitCalendarExtender = new CalendarExtender(); toolkitCalendarExtender.TargetControlID.... ... this.Controls.Add(toolkitCalendarExtender); This is really nice because in this way I don't have to deal with rendering predefined JavaScript which I construct somehow as string inside my custom server control. • UITableViewCellSeparatorStyleNone does not hide blue separator line when selecting in UITableView

  Before describing the problem, let me first point out that this is a distinct issue from this question. The Problem This screenshot was taken with a break set at tableView:didSelectRowAtIndexPath:, and as you can see in the simulator (far right of the image), there's a single-pixel blue line at the bottom of the selected cell. This is not the design asked for by the client, nor is it how this app used to behave: there should be no separator, even on selection. How I Got Here I'd initially designed this table view using custom UITableViewCell classes with corresponding nib (.xib) files and had no trouble with selections: the separator was hidden as desired. Predictably, scrolling was sluggish due to all the overhead from the view hierarchy, so I reworked the custom cells to use Loren Brichter's fast scrolling solution. Now scrolling is much faster, but I can't get rid of the separator for the life of me. What I've tried At the time of the screenshot above... the table view has "Separator [None]" in IB. the UIViewController that contains the table view has this line in viewDid Load: self.tableView.separatorStyle = UITableViewCellSeparatorStyleNone; As you can see in the screenshot, I inserted some unused lines to prove that separatorStyle is set as desired. Other testing confirms that tableView and self.tableView are equivalent pointers at that same breakpoint. I've also tried setting tableView.separatorColor to black and to clear, all with the same result: the cells look right until a selection is made.

How to let Fluent-NHibernate know which concrete class to instantiate when the property returns an interface or an abstract base class? EDIT: Explicitly specify the type of component by writing Component<Bar> (as suggested by Sly) has no effect and causes the same exception to occur. • Force a UIView to redraw immediately, instead of during next run loop

  I've created a UIImagePicker / camera view, with a toolbar and custom button for taking a snapshot. I can't really change to using the default way because of the custom button, and I'm drawing on top of the view. When you hit the button, I want to take a screenshot using UIGetScreenImage(); however, the toolbar is showing up in the image, even if I hide it first: //hide the toolbar self.toolbar.hidden = YES; // capture the screen pixels CGImageRef screenCap = UIGetScreenImage(); I'm pretty sure this is because even though the toolbar is hidden, it gets redrawn once the function returns and we enter the next run loop - after UIGetScreenImage is called. I tried making the following addition, but it didn't help: //hide the toolbar self.toolbar.hidden = YES; [self.toolbar drawRect:CGRectMake(0, 0, 320, 52)]; // capture the screen pixels CGImageRef screenCap = UIGetScreenImage(); I also tried using setNeedsDisplay, but that doesn't work either because once again the draw happens after the current function returns.   I want to be able to create a UIButton with an oversized responsive area. I know that one way to do that is to override the hitTest method in a subclass, but how do I instantiate my custom button object in the first place? [OversizedButton buttonWithType: UIButtonTypeDetailDisclosure]; doesn't work out of the box because buttonWithType returns a UIButton, not an OversizedButton. So it seems like I need to override the buttonWithType method as well. • Does Google Maps API v3 allow larger zoom values ?

  If you use the satellite GMapType using this Google-provided example in v3 of the API, the maximum zoom level has a scale of 2m / 10ft , whereas using the v2 version of another Google-provided example (had to use another one since the control-simple doesn't have the scale control) yields the maximum scale of 20m / 50ft. Is this a new "feature" of v3 ? I have to mention that I've tested the examples in the same GLatLng regions - so my guess is that tile detail level doesn't influence it, am I mistaken ? As mentioned in another question, v3 is to be considered of very Labs-y/beta quality, so use in production should be discouraged for the time being. I've been drawn to the subject since I have to "increase the zoom level of a GMap", the answers here seem to suggest using GTileLayer, and I'm considering GMapCreator, although this will involve some effort. What I'm trying to achieve is to have a larger zoom level, a scale of 2m / 10ft would be perfect, I have a map where the tiles aren't that hi-res and quite a few markers. Seeing that the area doesn't have hi-res tiles, the distance between the markers is really tiny, creating some problematic overlapping. Or better yet, how can you create a custom Map which allows higher zoom levels, as by the Google Campus, where the 2m / 10ft scale is achieved, and not use your own tileserver ? I've seen an example on a fellow Stackoverflower's GMaps sandbox , where the tiles are manually created based on the zoom level. I don't think I'm making any more sense, so I'm just going to end this big question here, I've been wondering around trying to find a solution for hours now. I have the native form login in place, I also have Facebook Connect in place, Upon gathering user information I link it to a native account but without a password. At that point I would like to call a link or method to start process of going into the Spring Security Filter Chain. Here is the source code that works, but am trying to modify. It contains all the files I'm taking about. Now from what I understand I need to add a custom FacebookAuthenticationProvider so that my AuthenticationManager knows about it. <bean id="facebookAuthenticationProvider" class="org.springframework.security.facebook.FacebookAuthenticationProvider"> </bean> <security:authentication-manager alias="authenticationManager"> <security:authentication-provider ref="facebookAuthenticationProvider" /> </security:authentication-manager> Then within the FacebookAuthenticationProvider I would have to call an FacebookAuthenticationToken that would take my the current facebook Uid and SessionKey of the user.
