• How to Clean Up and Fix Your Music Library with the MusicBrainz Database

  Over the years, some of us accumulate lots and lots of music files. Since these come from a variety of sources, they’re not always as neat as they could be. If your music library is in a bit of a jumble with tags missing, oddly named files and incomplete albums, read on to see how easy it is to make it neat once and for all. MusicBrainz is an online database that uses audio “fingerprints” to identify music tracks even when they’re incorrectly labelled. We’ll be using this database through a free client called Picard, available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. So first thing, head on over to Picard’s download page and get the installer. If you use Linux, you can install Picard using your package manager. Once you finish going through the installer, run Picard. Your firewall might pop up an alert telling you Picard is trying to access the Internet; you should agree to let Picard through. You will now see the main Picard interface. Click View > File browser (or press Ctrl+B). • Advise on VMWare hardware requirements and host OS

  Hi All, I'm a newbie developer wanting to learn a bit about Virtualization (from the IT point of view, not theoretical/academic). What I'd like to do: Prepare a machine Install VMWare or VirtualBox Prepare 3 Guest OSes (one for Win2k8 server, 2 for Ubuntu Server) Win2k8 will run SQL Server 2k8 and IIS (for ASP.NET MVC deployment) 1 Ubuntu Server for Drupal, SugarCRM, MediaWiki, typical LAMP stuff 1 Ubuntu Server for Java (Tomcat/Jetty + MySQL/PostgreSQL) What I'd like to know: What would be the ideal Host OS such that the Host OS should not spend too many resources on itself but should boost these instances of VMs (e.g: does Win2k8 performs better vs Linux?) What would be the ideal machine for this (preferably AMD base chip) I'm not expecting the best performance out of this setup, just a decent one to host one drupal instance, one ASP.NET MVC (future, not now), and one Tomcat/Jetty instance. NB: If you have a better suggestions on the setup, feel free to let me know (e.g: maybe Drupal and Tomcat can be in one instance but move the database to another instance instead of 1 instance map to 1 webserver and 1 dbserver). • Should I convert my AAC M4A files to MP3?

  Due to Apple, I have a large majority of my music files in the AAC M4A format. They do NOT have DRM so I don't have to worry about that. I'm getting tired of Apple products and really want to switch to a different brand player (and something more compatible with Linux). It appears most MP3 players support...well...MP3 and not AAC. Should I convert my library to be free of Apple and open to other players? Is this a lossless conversion? Can it be lossless? If I will lose quality, I'm not interested. Am I even doing the right thing? AAC is the better format, but I'm not seeing a lot of support for it yet. I'll be honest and say that I need some education in this department. Any helpful advice is most welcome.

  If been using "dbForge Query Builder" lately and I'm gotten used to the ease of building and testing a query, specially for those complex ones with inner joins, aliases and multiple conditionals. The expiry date of the trial is about to come, and while wanting to remain on the legal side for this I'd rather not pay the 50USD it costs (although I must say it's pretty cheap for what it does). So my question would be: Are there any free alternatives to replace this visual query builder? I've failed to find any and fear that my only two options are paying for it, or going to the dark side.

• Google earth will not reinstall

  I was trying to perform the the fix found at this link http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2012/01/how-to-make-google-earth-look-native-in-ubuntu It requires you to delete certain files from the /opt/google/earth/free folder and then add some new ones that you download. I deleted the files but the links to download the new ones were unusable. I was using gksudo nautilus so trash was disabled meaning I could not restore the files I had deleted. I the tried to go to the Google Earth website and reinstall it. I downloaded the .deb but when I tried to install it it gav me an error message saying "cannot install ia32-libs" I tried installing this via terminal and it gave me an error message saying chad@chad-Lenovo-G570:~$ sudo apt-get install ia32-libs [sudo] password for chad: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. • Researching runtime technologies (Xmas fun with HTML5)

  The Internet Explorer 9.0 team just posted about Pirates love Daises. This is a showcase game for the power of HTML 5 running inside IE 9.0 – and the author has done a fantastic job (you can get more details from Grant’s blog post). A game developer is an ISV (Independent Software Vendor) – a B2C  ISV. In my role I don’t (typically) work with B2C ISVs, hence a reasonable question is “Why blog about it?”. I think applications like this demonstrate the power of HTML 5 and IE9 for delivering really rich user experiences which have the promise of working cross browser and cross platform - in the future as HTML5 capable browsers become the norm. Microsoft is investing heavily in implementing a great “run time” in IE9 if cross platform is an important requirement for your UX. And the other reason for blogging this… it is nearly Xmas and we all should be having a little more fun on the run in. • Transfer Books from Mac to Kindle App on the Nexus 7

  I have some e-books that I've downloaded from Project Gutenberg and some other sources to my MBP. They are all DRM free. Excluding e-mail them to my Kindle as a personal document as a method (the total size is more than 5 GB, the space provided by Amazon), is there any way to transfer these books to my Kindle App on my Nexus 7 (Android Tablet). I have the Kindle App version 3.1.7 I've already seen the question Can I sync books I didn't buy from Amazon via Kindle app? but that is not the answer I'm looking for. Thanks

• How can I make WinXP bind to ports other than 1025-5000 for outgoing TCP connections?

  (I originally posted a similar question on StackOverflow but readers recommended I post here instead) When you create outgoing TCP connections, most applications let the operating system choose which port to use. Most OSes use the IANA recommended dynamic port range of 49152-65535 for this purpose. But in Windows 2003 and earlier (including XP) Microsoft uses ports 1025-5000. Microsoft lets you change the high end of this range via the MaxUserPort TcpIP registry setting, but I see no way to change the low end. I need to have port 4160 free for incoming connections and on rare occasions an outgoing connection steals that port from me before I bind that port.

But in My home I don't have a faster internet connection. I downloaded a Windows 8.1 ISO from cafe, but when I started installing, it asks for a key. I typed my original Key for windows 8, but it didn't work. Is there any way for me to update to Windows 8.1 without an internet connection and without purchasing another key? Thank you

• Move files and resize partition automatically?

  I'm in a bit of an odd situation. I've recently been working on switching from debian to arch, and I've got my home partition for both pointing to the same partition (different usernames, so that's not an issue). What I want to do is one of two things, either: Set up user on arch with same username and group as debian, and have everything just sort of work! OR Move files I'd like to share between home folders to their own partition, and mount it with fstab. For the second one, I have around 150gb of files that would need moved to their own partition, and i've got about 15gb of free space on my home partition. So what I'd want to do is somehow make a 10gb ext4 partition, move 10gb-ish of files, expand the partition again, move files again, etc until all the files are moved to their own partition. I can do it manually, but it'd be easier if I could say "Move 10GB-ish of files from here to there, and then resize it and repeat until I'm out of files". Is that even possible?

• Mount shared folder (vbox) as another user

  I'm trying to mount my vbox shared folder every time my ubuntu starts. So, I added an entry on /etc/init with this: description "mount vboxsf Desktop" start on startup task exec mount -t vboxsf Desktop /var/www/shared Seems to work, except by the fact that all the files are owned by "root", and I don't have permission to write on the folder (neither chmod nor chown seems to be working). So, how can I make all the files under this shared folder to be owned by www-data user/group? Thanks ps.: The main reason for me to have an automatic shared folder, is so I can create/edit files from the HOST on the GUEST www folder. If you have a better idea for that, instead of sharing the folder, fell free to say.

• Central Ohio Day of .Net 2010 Slides and Files
