• Is it possible to set a SRV record with xname.org

  According to XName's (not up-to-date) ChangeLog Thu Oct 19 2006 Yann Hirou ([email protected]) Adding SRV records - including modification of dns_records it appears to be possible to set a SRV record for one of your zones. However, I just can't find a way to do this in the UI. I've contacted Yann Hirou, but didn't receive any answer (he is either submerged by emails, or only responds to "paying supporters") It might be that the feature is available in the source code, but that the instance running on XName has not been updated (since 2006?) Has anyone using XName been able to set up such records? Otherwise I might be forced to switch to another free DNS service...

• Is SQL Azure a newbies springboard?

  Earlier today I was considering the various SQL Server platforms that are available today and I wondered aloud, wonder how long until the majority of #sqlserver newcomers use @sqlazure instead of installing locally Let me explain. My first experience of development was way back in the early 90s when I would crank open VBA in Access or Excel and start hammering out some code, usually by recording macros and looking at the code that they produced (sound familiar?). The reason was simple, Office was becoming ubiquitous so the barrier to entry was incredibly low and, save for a short hiatus at university, I’ve been developing on the Microsoft platform ever since. These days spend most of my time using SQL Server. I take a look at SQL Azure today I see a lot of similarities with those early experiences, the barrier to entry is low and getting lower. I don’t have to download some software or actually install anything other than a web browser in order to get myself a fully functioning SQL Server  database against which I can ostensibly start hammering out some code and I believe that to be incredibly empowering. Having said that there are still a few pretty high barriers, namely: I need to get out my credit card Its pretty useless without some development tools such as SQL Server Management Studio, which I do have to install. The second of those barriers will disappear pretty soon when Project Houston delivers a web-based admin and presentation tool for SQL Azure so that just leaves the matter of my having to use a credit card. If Microsoft have any sense at all then they will realise the huge potential of opening up a free, throttled version of SQL Azure for newbies to party on; they get to developers early (just like they did with me all those years ago) and it gives potential customers an opportunity to try-before-they-buy. • External hard drive encryption

  I've got a complete backup of my main PC on 1.5 TB external hard drive that I carry around with my laptop so I can have access to all of my files while I'm on the move, however it has just dawned on me that if someone nicks my external hard drive they now have access to everything! Hence I'm looking for a way to encrypt my external hard drive. I'm after something that is: Secure (if I need to carry around a USB dongle to keep the key on so be it) Fast (the performance of the drive should still be reasonable) Cross-platform (I regularly use other peoples computers - Sometimes they are not windows based and might not even have internet access, however I still want to be able to access my files) Cheap (preferably free / open source!)

• Disk full, du tells different. How to further investigate?

  I have a SCSI disk in a server (hardware Raid 1), 32G, ext3 filesytem. df tells me that the disk is 100% full. If I delete 1G this is correctly shown. However, if I run a du -h -x / then du tells me that only 12G are used (I use -x because of some Samba mounts). So my question is not about subtle differences between the du and df commands but about how I can find out what causes this huge difference? I rebooted the machine for a fsck that went w/out errors. Should I run badblocks? lsof shows me no open deleted files, lost+found is empty and there is no obvious warn/err/fail statement in the messages file. Feel free to ask for further details of the setup.

• Microsoft Terminology: .NET C++ vs. traditional C++

  I've recently been working with a team that's using both .NET C++ and pre-.NET C++. I fully understand the technical differences between the two technologies. However, I sometimes feel like I'm floundering when it comes to the terminology used to differentiate the two. Example: Say we have two projects: ProjectA contains "C++" code that builds a .NET assembly DLL. ProjectB contains Visual C++ code that builds a traditional native Windows DLL. What is the best way to succinctly and terminologically draw a distinction between the two projects? Again, I'm not asking for an in-depth technical description of the differences between the two technologies. I'm just looking for names and labels. This is how, today, I might try to make the distinction when talking to someone: "ProjectA is a managed .NET C++ project" and "ProjectB is an unmanaged native C++ DLL project." However I am not at all certain that this terminology is ideal, or even correct. Please describe what you feel the ideal language to use in this situation (or similar situations) might be. Feel free to motivate your answer.

• serving static assets via http is really slow compared to sshfs (apache2/nginx)

  After migrating to a new VPS I had some users complaining about slow loading images on their sites. After creating some test files with dd I realized that I can download all files via sshfs with full speed while downloads via web are painfully slow. The larger the file is and the longer the transfer takes, the slower the transfer speed gets. I thought I had some problems with Apache and just spend the whole evening with replacing Apache2 against nginx for static file serving - with no effect at all. No I/O wait states in top. Tons of RAM free, no high CPU utilization and hdparm shows a decent I/O performance at all times. I just have no idea anymore, what's happening on this server. • New Visual Studio 2010 Extension - Collapse Solution

  If your team has recently upgraded to Visual Studio 2010, take a second to check out the new Extension Manager. You can use it to browse through or install tons of tools, controls, or templates from the Visual Studio Gallery. My friend, Cory Cissell, and I recently teamed up and created an extension of our own called "Collapse Solution". It adds an option called Collapse Solution to the context menu of the solution node in the solution explorer. It also adds an option called Collapse Project to the context menu of each project node in the solution explorer. When that option is clicked, it will walk through the solution explorer tree and collapse any expanded child nodes in that section (projects, folders, code behind files, designer files, etc.). I use to have an add-in that did this in Visual Studio 2008 but it wasn't compatible when we upgraded to 2010 so we decided to write our own. The old tool was also packaged with a bunch of other junk that we didn't need so we figured it would be a much cleaner tool if it was broken off into its own extension. There's no need to install extra tools if you don't really need them.   I use an old copy of altaris SVS (link to lifehacker - symentec gutted the old altaris website) for testing applications - it lets me capture the changes one executable makes, or changes to a whole system into a bundle, and remove the whole bundle once i'm done. However symentec bought over altaris and apparently killed off the product, or merged it into some other bigger product. I'd like the same fine grained control SVS had, something that just does this, and preferably free (for personal use) or not too expensive. I'd like this to run on at least windows XP 32 bit, but windows 7 and 64 bit support would be nice too

  If you’re using external hard drives with your Windows Home Server, they might get unplugged and create an error. Here we look at running the Repair Wizard to quickly fix the issue. If an external drive that is included in your drive pool becomes unplugged or loses power, you might see the following error under Home Network Health when opening the WHS Console. To fix the issue verify the drive has power and is plugged in correctly and click Repair. The wizard launches and you’ll need to agree that you may lose data during the repair of the backup database. In this example it was a simple problem where an external drive became unplugged from the server…so you can close out of the wizard. If you look under Server Storage you can see the drive is missing…To fix the issue verify the drive has power and is plugged in correctly. WHS will add the drive back into the pool and when finished you’ll see it listed as healthy and good to go. Using external drives that are part of your storage pool may not be the best way to have your home built WHS setup, but if you do, expect occasional errors such as this. • Is a Model Driven Architecture in Language Oriented Programming (MPS) feasible at this time

  As a side project I am developing some sort of DSL where I describe a data model, and generate desired code files from it. I believe this is called Model Driven Architecture. My partial existing implementation uses C#, CodeDOM, XML and XSLT to do this manually. I discovered there already exist better environments to do this in. The one which fascinated me the most is called MPS, which follows the Language Oriented Programming paradigm. This article, written by a cofounder of JetBrains was a real eye opener for me. I truly believe LOP has a very good chance of becoming the next big programming paradigm once it has broader support. From my short experience with MPS, I noticed it is still mainly Java-oriented. My question is, how feasible is it to generate code files for other (multiple) languages instead of just Java. I don't need full language support from the start, so preferably, I need to be able to implement a language in a agile way. E.g. first support only one type, add access modifiers, ... Perhaps some other (free) environment already provides this out of the box. P.S.: I find it important to have a lot of control over the naming conventions and such of the generated code. This is one of the reasons why I started my own implementation.

  I think we've all been there: You hear of someone say "hey, wouldn't it be nice if platform X had feature Y?" You look around (on SO!), the feature really doesn't exist, even though it probably would be useful in many contexts. So it's pretty generic. Your mind wanders for a bit. "How tough would it be? Well, it'd probably be just a snippet. And an ad-hoc function. And maybe a wrapper." And boom, before you know it, you've spent a dozen hours of your free time implementing a FooFeature that's really neat and generic. The kind of code you might not even have the time to spit and shine at work, that would be a bit rushed and not so documented. So now you wonder "wouldn't this be useful to others?" And you've got your blog, maybe a CodeProject account, and your colleague who asked if FooFeature exists might, haphazardly, come accross that blog entry, had it existed before they told you. On the otherhand, the NDA agreement. It's sort of vague and general. It doesn't forbid you from coding at home, but it's clear on sharing company code, that's a big NO. But this isn't company code. Or is it? Or will it be? So, what do you do with code (that's more than just a snippet) you wrote in your off time with universality in mind but an idea that came from work, and that will most likely be used at work? Can it be published?

• Reflector Pro has now been released!

  After moving into the .NET division in May , and having a great time working on Reflector, I'm pleased to say that the results of that work are now available. Reflector Pro has now been released! The old Reflector as you know and love it is still available free of charge, and as part of this project we've fixed a number of bugs in the de-compilation that have been around for a long time. The Pro version comes as an add-in for Visual Studio - this offers dynamic de-compilation and generation of pdb files which allow you to step into the de-compiled code. Alex has some good pictures of this functionality on his beta post from around a month ago. Thanks to the other guys who've worked on this for taking me along for the ride - Alex, Andrew, Bart and Jason. Stephen did some great usability work, Chris Alford did some great technical authoring and Laila handled the launch publicity. Like all projects, there's always more I'd like to have done, but what we have looks like a pretty powerful addition to the developer's set of tools to me. Please try it and give us feedback on the forum.

  Hello, I want to learn about servers, not for any particular application, I simply want to learn. I am looking at LAMP, but I can't find any resources for learning about it. I have a giant book from 2004, would it still be applicable or should I use something more recent? I looked online but couldn't find anything beyond installation. Is there a comprehensive resource, preferably using Python (since I already know it) and preferably free, for learning LAMP? I don't know much about networking, is it a prerequisite for LAMP? • How to convert PowerPoint presentations into a Kindle/E-reader friendly form?

  I have a lot of documents in .ppt and .pptx (blame the co-workers). I would like to read them on way home or elsewhere... when I have a little time to catch up with things. One thing I could do with the documents is cutting them together into one file. But saving that one even if a smaller version of PDF (according to Office 2010) results in a huge file. And PDF is hardly readable on a Kindle. I would need something .epub free, easy-on-the-device way. Is there such a thing? (Manually I could copy all the images down into native text and whatnot and create new presentations, save those, convert them. But that would just take a lot of time.)

• How best to backup 6x Win2k3 Servers

  We have a external HP LTO3 tape drive. It needs to backup 6 Windows 2003 machines every night. Servers are HP DL380 G3 and the tape drive is attached locally to one of them via SCSI. On a budget of $0, and a goal of keeping-it-simple, what is going to be the best way to backup these machines? What software to use? NT Backup? Or does HP have something better for free? We don't need image backups - file system + system state will be adequate. Do we need to copy the files to be backed up onto the machine with the tape drive attached? Edit: Let me ask a more focussed question: Would you use NT Backup or something else? No soap boxing please, we've after some quick advice from someone who's used a similar setup.

• Advice: The first-time interviewer's dilemna

  I've been working in my first job for about 2 years now, and I've been "asked" to interview a potential teammate (whom I might have to mentor as well) on pretty short notice (2 days from now). Initially, I had been given a free rein(or so I thought, and hence agreed), but today, I've been told "not to pose bookish questions" - implying I can only ask basic programming puzzles and stuff similar to the 'fizbuzz' question. I strongly believe that not knowing basic algorithmic notations(the haziest ideas of space/time complexities) or the tiniest idea of regular expressions would make working with the guy very difficult for anyone. I know i'm asking for a lot here, but according to you, what would be a comprehensive way to test out the absolutely basic requirements of a CS guy(he has 2 yrs of exp) without sounding too pedantic/bookish etc ? It seems it would be legit to ask C questions/simple puzzles only....but I really do want to have something a bit different from "finding loops in linked lists" that has kind of become the opening statement of most techie interviews !! This is a face-to-face interview with about an hour or more of time - I looked at Steve's basic phone-screen questions, and I was wondering if there exists a guide on "basic face-to-face interview questions" that I can use(or compile from the community's answers here). EDIT: The position is mostly for a kernel level C programming job, with some smattering of C++ required for writing the test framework.

• Which algorithms/data structures should I "recognize" and know by name?

  I'd like to consider myself a fairly experienced programmer. I've been programming for over 5 years now. My weak point though is terminology. I'm self-taught, so while I know how to program, I don't know some of the more formal aspects of computer science. So, what are practical algorithms/data structures that I could recognize and know by name? Note, I'm not asking for a book recommendation about implementing algorithms. I don't care about implementing them, I just want to be able to recognize when an algorithm/data structure would be a good solution to a problem. I'm asking more for a list of algorithms/data structures that I should "recognize". For instance, I know the solution to a problem like this: You manage a set of lockers labeled 0-999. People come to you to rent the locker and then come back to return the locker key. How would you build a piece of software to manage knowing which lockers are free and which are in used? The solution, would be a queue or stack. What I'm looking for are things like "in what situation should a B-Tree be used -- What search algorithm should be used here" etc. And maybe a quick introduction of how the more complex(but commonly used) data structures/algorithms work. I tried looking at Wikipedia's list of data structures and algorithms but I think that's a bit overkill. So I'm looking more for what are the essential things I should recognize?

• Windows Live SkyDrive: How To Move or Copy Files Between Folders

  Microsoft has very simple and easy to use interface to move files between folders in Windows Operating system. But their own cloud storage service,Windows Live SkyDrive, complicated these simple and daily used operations. We need a guide to figure out how to perform basic copy/move operations. Couple of years ago we wrote about moving files between folders in old version of SkyDrive but the guide does not hold good today as SkyDrive has gone through many user interface changes in the recent past. Today one of our readers asked us how to move/copy files in the latest version of SkyDrive and here are the steps to be followed 1. Login to your Windows Live SkyDrive 2. Select the file you want to Move or Copy by clicking on the information icon (see 2 in below image) 3. After selecting the information icon, expand Information section displayed on the right side panel to access Move and Copy options (see 3 in the below image). 4. To move the selected file to another folder, select Move option and Sky Drive will guide you through folder selection user interface for choosing the target folder. 5. Once you navigate to the target folder where you want to move the file click on “Move this file into <<Target Folder>>”. 6. You are done. Dear Microsoft, SkyDrive provides us tonnes of free storage but please make it’s user interface a bit better so that we don’t need to write guides to perform basic operations.
