• GRUB2 UEFI booting from LVM on RAID (with XEN)

  I'm experimenting with booting root fs from LVM volume inside the raid (mdraid superblock 1.x) via UEFI with GRUB2. Also I'm using Xen hypervisor. From grub command line I can see my lvm volume (ls command) but I got kernel panic due to "unable to mount root fs". I saw a note in this article telling it's probably impossible to boot root fs from raid via UEFI, but I don't understand the reason why not. Is it possible to boot linux with this configuration without the initramfs (which I don't won't to use)?

• .htaccess enabled, but not working.

  I been having some very frustrating issues with getting .htaccess to work on my new server. I'm not very experienced in managing a server, but I've spent the last three days pouring over documentation and every resource I can get my hands on. I've attempted to try a very basic application of .htaccess, and yet it fails to give the expected results. I've setup a test over at http://173.201.185.217/test/. Immediately within this directory is an .htaccess file with the following command: deny from all If I'm not mistaken, this should deny access to /test, but it doesn't. It just sits there allowing anybody to view the contents. What could be wrong with my server/configuration? The server is running CentOS.

• Staggering java linux process startup to prevent OOM

  I am running a number of java processes on a single Linux machine. From a memory and computing standpoint, everything is fine when things are static. However, periodically we use a configuration management package up upgrade the jar or war files, and restart the java process. The problem is, that is restarts them all relatively quickly, and so we get 10 or so java VMs restarting all at the same time (we use daemontools for the service stops/starts), which wreaks havoc on the machine, in terms of OOMs or just really slow. This is because it's spawning the JVM 10x at the same time. Other than trying to stagger the startups, is there a smarter way of handling this? Maybe a sysctl tuning performance parameters, or a JVM parameter?

• Apache + plesk vhost problem: .htaccess ignored!

  Hi guys, i have a problem with a simple apache configuration. When the user ask for https://mydomain.com i have to redirect it to https://www.mydomain.com, becose my https certificate is valid just for the domain with www. I create the vhost.conf into my /var/www/vhosts/mydomain.com/conf/ directory, with inside: <Directory /var/www/vhosts/mydomain.com/httpsdocs> AllowOverride All </Directory> And my .htaccess file into the /var/www/vhosts/mydomain.com/httpsdocs/ is: RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{HTTPS_HOST} ^mydomain\.com RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://www.mydomain.com/$1 [R=301,L] But seem like the .htaccess is completely ignored. Any idea?

• VMware Fusion / New Machine / verify VMs?

  I just got a 15" MacBook Pro with 8GB RAM, 2.66 i7 and 500GB SSD. Very sweet and fast! My old machine was 2.66 Core 2 Duo. I used Migration Assistant to migrate my old MBP to the new. When I started VMware to run Windows and Ubuntu I got the message first This VM has been moved or copied to a new machine. Did you move or copy it? I answered Copied. Then I got the message this CPU is a different configuration than the machine that created the VM. You may get unpredictable results. I answered Open Anyway. Windows XP, Windows 7, and Ubuntu all seem to work OK, but how can I verify? Is there some form of test harness for a VM? I have had a VM degrade and become unusable with very catastrophic data loss (on Parallels...), so I am a bit paranoid. Thanks,

• Connecting/Adding a private network on windows server 2008

  Hey all, I have a dual server configuration on a host provider using VPS. I was told by my Host provider that in order to use free bandwidth between my two servers (they are in the same location) I need to add a alias "subnet" to a specific ip (A private network, VPN). How do I add an aliased ip in widnwos? in Linux the relevant command is supposed to be (By my search in blogs) "ifconfig eth0:1 10.129.175.165 netmask 255.255.255.0" They also said that another way to connect between the servers (should also be faster) is to use "private lan", but as it happens I don't know how to define one :(. Is there a windows equivalent or another way to do this? I have checked my ip config and found no indication of the private lan or the VPN ip.

• Where can I find details on installing and using Solr on Tomcat using the solr-common and solr-tomcat packages?

  I'm seeing lots of Solr/Tomcat installation instructions, but all of them install at least one of these packages from source. Since there's tomcat6, solr-common, and solr-tomcat packages (in Ubuntu 10.4), I'd love to use them, but I can't find any kind of documentation on installing using them. I can't even tell what directory solr is stored in. I get a "Welcome to Solr!" page at http://localhost:8080/solr/, but have no idea where the catalina home is, or where the solr configuration files are in this case. Can anyone point me to documentation?

I then fire up XBMC from a terminal on the PC monitor using DISPLAY=:0.1 xbmc XBMC fires up quite nicely on the TV however I can no longer use the main PC monitor / mouse / keyboard as XBMC on the TV screen seems to have focus. I was hoping to have XBMC running on the TV and let the kids use the MCE remote whilst I get on with my work on the PC monitor. Does anyone have any idea how to overcome this? • is my xml cached by IIS7?

  Hi guys, I have a flashplayer on my website. Behind it, there is an xml file which keeps the configuration of the products shown on that flashplayer. I do not understand why, if i modify something in the xml config file, the flash player is not updated at that moment, but after hours... Do you know why? I have not defined any rule for output caching in IIS7 so there is probably something default? Of course, i've tried Ctrl+f5 but does not work. Thanks.

• How do I mount a CIFS share via FSTAB and give full RW to Guest

  I want to create a Public folder that has full RW access. The problem with my configuration is that Windows users have no issues as guests (they can RW and Delete), my Ubuntu client can't do the same. We can only write and read, but not create or delete.   In my network, I've some Ubuntu machines which need to download files from nl.archive.ubuntu.com. Since it's quite a waste of time to download everything multiple times, I've setup a squid proxy for caching the data. Another use for this proxy was rewriting requests for archive.ubuntu.com or *.archive.ubuntu.com to nl.archive.ubuntu.com because this mirror is faster than the US mirrors. This has worked quite well, but after a recent install of my caching machine, the configuration was lost. I remember having a separate perl program for handling this rewrite. How do I setup such a squid proxy which rewrites the host *.example.com to www.example.com and cache the result of the latter?

• How to debug high memory usage by registry?

  I have a windows 2008 r2 server running ADFS2 and some web apps that is having issues with low memory. Digging around I found that the 5.5 GB were being used under Kernel Memory (paged). Further digging with Poolmon, I discovered that the majority of that (5GB+) was being used by CM - configuration manager. Also known as the registry. I'm really now sure how to tell why the registry is using so much memory however, or how to release it? Looking at the physical registry files they don't appear that large.   Hi, I've just installed Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 in Windows XP SP3 When trying to run MS word or any other office app (Excel, PowerPoint), I get the following message: this application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect This also happens with other applications, for instance, Acrobat Reader. A bit of Googling around this error message suggests that this might be due to a mismatch of library versions. In fact, most of the articles and forum messages I found mention a programmer writing an application in Visual C++ and sending it to someone else, who then runs into that error. This is hardly my case ! I looked into Office's files and the manifest file for Excel suggests that Office is trying to use Microsoft VC80.CRT version 8.0.50608.0. However, in my Windows System folder, I can only find the assemblies for 8.0.50727.762 My next step will be trying to find version 8.0.50608.0. How can I find and download it ?

• Why does Unity not extend to my 2nd monitor, even when it is displaying an X-Screen?

  I recently added a 2nd video card to my system, but unity refuses to extend my desktop over to the second screen. Although the secondary monitor initialises when I boot and I can move the mouse cursor over to the 2nd screen, the screen is otherwise blank (showing no wallpaper or interface elements) and I am unable to move any windows to this monitor. Moving the mouse cursor over to the 2nd monitor changes it from the default cursor to the old-style X cursor, such as the one that appears when you run X-kill, indicating that this screen is initialised in the X Server but that Unity is not recognising it. Although the Nvidia X Server Settings application can see both monitors, the unity systems settings application does not detect the 2nd adapter. Sometimes the additional drivers application can see both adapters, but it doesn't consistently show options for them both. Xrandr also fails to detect the 2nd monitor, but iNex lists both adapters. I have experimented with several different drivers for each adapter and with setting each of the graphics cards as the primary adapter in the BIOS, but this has made little difference. The two adapters are an onboard Geforce 8200 and a PCIE Geforce 7200 GX. The onboard adapter is currently set as the primary, however this adapter crashes whenever I use the Nouveau driver and I have to switch over to the PCIE as a primary whenever I purge the proprietary drivers (switching back when the 304 driver has been reinstalled). It doesn't matter which adapter I set as my primary, the results are the same : one screen showing the unity interface and one screen showing an X-Screen that only displays the mouse cursor. All I want is to be able to run this system in a dual screen configuration. I am not a gamer, nor do I require 3D rendering capabilities. Anything you can suggest to get the desktop to extend across both screens will be massively appreciated!

• Forcing Acrobat Reader font

  Hello, I have a netbook with Linpus Linux and I'm trying to open automatically generated documents with Acrobat Reader that use Verdana but without having it embedded inside the PDF file. Linpus doesn't come natively with any Verdana font so I had to install them inside /usr/share/fonts/by doing mkfontdirand fc-cacheto force a recache of the fonts. Then I've been able to select it inside other programs (eg. OpenOffice) but I'm still unable to open these PDFs. It seems that Acrobat is unable to find the font anyway. Since I have no control on how these PDFs are generated, is there a way to force Acrobat to use a specific font is the one it needs is unfound? Or maybe Acrobat needs a different kind of font configuration on Linux? Thanks in advance

• Alerting when a RAID Array disk fails locally on VMWare ESX or ESXi System

  With ESX and ESXi, we recently had two systems where that the boot partition became degraded due to a failed disk. The only alert we managed to capture was the visual alert on the Dell servers. We failed to received any electronic alerts regarding the failed or degraded array. Does anyone have any experience with monitoring for these types of failures? In both cases, the servers were running in a RAID 5 SCSI configuration (5 disks on one system, 3 disks on another) which if we were running a Windows Server OS, we would have had an alert created in the Eventviewer. Where would I begin to look for this solution. Can it be configured in VCenter or vFoglight?

• pfSense - DHCP Relay

  I have 3 pfSense boxes acting as routers on a single subnet (172.22.12.0/26). Router A - 172.22.12.1 Router B - 172.22.12.17 Router C - 172.22.12.33 I want Router A to be the only DHCP server. Router C has DHCP relay enabled that points to Router B. Router B then has DHCP relay enabled that points to Router A. Like this: Router C -- Router B -- Router A (DHCP Server) Router B gets an IP from Router A, but Router C does not. Any ideas why this configuration isn't working? Thanks.

  I can't figure out the difference from just the man pages. I can see what is a daemon and one is a client, but what does that mean practically when using the commands? Also what is the difference between the client and daemon in this case, not just the terms (client and daemon) but functionally wise? EDIT: How are the tasks divided, if the client updates the information on the client, what is the purpose of the daemon. I'm talking about the client daemon in this case dhcpcd not dhcpd. Both come installed by default with some versions of Linux and seem to share the duties of the dhcp client. • Oh snap! My RPi was upgraded to 512MB! Woo-hoo!

  I ordered a Raspberry Pi Model B (256MB) over 4 months ago on backorder. When it finally came I saw it was upgraded to the new half a gig model! Woot! But, all was not perfect. Gary C. told me the shipped configuration of the new RPi models didn't have the right firmware for 512MB, and I had to upgrade the start.elf in the /boot directory to recognize all of the 512MB RAM. I did a "free" command, and sure enough saw only 240MB. Sadness. But, Gary gave me a copy of his start.elf which worked after some trail and error. For anyone ordering the new RPi Model B w/512MB, here are the steps to get you going with full 512MB RAM: sudo apt-get update --fix-missing sudo apt-get upgrade --fix-missing # NOTE: This step takes at least a couple hours on a # fast network wget https://raw.github.com/raspberrypi/firmware/\ 164b0fe2b3b56081c7510df93bc1440aebe45f7e/boot/\ arm496_start.elf sudo mv /boot/start.elf /boot/orig-start.elf sudo mv arm496_start.elf /boot/start.elf sudo reboot free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 497768 210596 287172 0 16892 169624 -/+ buffers/cache: 24080 473688 Swap: 102396 0 102396 So of course this means... • Accessing WindowsXP shared printer from macbook?

  My new printer is setup on WindowsXP, it works and it is configured as a shared printer. I then setup a printer from Mac OSX 10.6.3 using the approved driver from the setup CD. I browsed for the printer via the network. When I send a test page, it queues, but never prints. Its as if the driver thinks the printer is local to the mac and just never finishes printing. THe configuration shows as: smb://dragoneye/CanonMP2 Where dragoneye is the name of the Windows XP server and the CanonMP2 is the little multi-purpose printer. My other Windows' CPU can setup and print. Is this a known problem or am I missing a setting??

I have a huge External drive for All Storage and am not concerned about Data loss just looking for pure speed. And if a Controller will benifit my performance Wht type of card would one suggest?

• How to set specific environment variables for Apache service run on Windows

  I'm facing a problem. I use xampp 1.7.7 on Windows which installs a Apache service. I find that I have to some tweak to have all PHP modules load properly. For example, php_ldap.dll cannot be loaded. It is mysterious why it cannot be loaded until I tried to run httpd.exe from command line, which reveals that libsasl.dll cannot be founded. Actually, there exist D:\xampp\php\libsasl.dll but httpd.exe cannot find it. OK. The best way is to add D:\xampp\php to PATH env-var. Now my question is: How do I set a specific PATH value for that specific Apache service but not system wide. -- because I think it is better not to disturb other processes with that extra PATH value. Is there a general way to do that for a specific Windows service? or, is there a Apache specific way to load extra env-var settings from some specific configuration files?
