• Which is a better option, OpenGL or a game engine for developing a game for the iphone or ipod touch

  I am new to OpenGL ES, and I'm about to begin a 3D game for the iphone in which we are showing some car pursuit or racing. Is it possible just with the OpenGL ES or UIKit only, or do I have to use other tools for it? I am comfortable with UIKit but newer to OpenGL/OpenGL ES; which would be better to start this game? Or should I use a game engine? If so, then which game engine would give us the 3D feeling, quality of images and motion, and rendering of the views with the sound effects?

• how to profile multi threaded c++ app on linux?

  I used to do all my linux profiling with gprof. However, with my multi threaded app, it's output appears to be inconsistent. Now, I dug this up http://sam.zoy.org/writings/programming/gprof.html howver, it's from a long time ago -- and in my gprof output, it appears my gprof is listing functions used by non-main threads. So, my questions are: 1) in 2010, can I easily use gprof to profile multi threaded linux c++ apps? (ubuntu 9.10) 2) what other tools should I look into for profiling? thanks!

  Hi, I am developing a Blackberry app which should be able to access a DB. Here is my development environment and the tools I am using: Eclipse (Galileo) IDE with the Blackberry plugin installed. Blackberry OS 5.0 SQLAnywhere's DB 11 with UltraLiteJ (I am targeting Blackberrys running OS 4.1 and above) I have successfully executed a sample project for building a Blackberry application that uses the UltraLiteJ DB, following the tutorial in the UltraLiteJ documentation*. The tutorial creates, populates and retrieves data from the DB using java code. Now, I want to be able to access the tables and view data in them from the Eclipse IDE. Something similar to the FireFox plugin for SqlLite or say the Enterprise Manager for Sql Server 2005 which is a DB Explorer providing access to the StoredProcedures, Views, DB Diagrams etc. for a Database. • Web Performance testing using VS2010 "Testing a file download"

  Hi All, I am trying out the VS 2010 testing tools for the first time. And I tried recording a web performance test and my actions had a file download implemented as in the KB article here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/812406 by streaming chunks of 10000 bytes. However my test is failing at the download saying "The response stream has been closed". Please help me understand why it is happening this way also any suggestions how you would test such a file download. My main aim was to see how the download was performing for a load test with Intercontinental 350kbps connection on files of about 30-50 MB. Thanks.

• How to determine cpu, ram needed for rails app?

  What is the most accurate way to determine the amount of cpu speed and ram needed to run my rails app? I believe there are stress testing tools like Tsung, but how do I determine, for example, that I need X more ram, or X more CPU? I would like to find some way to roughly gauge the performance needs of my application so I can anticipate future needs. I think this data will also be useful for me to decide whether to upgrade one machine, or get another dedicated machine and put all the databases on that one. Essentially, I am concerned about scaling issues, and how to anticipate them. Thanks in advance for the help!

• How to disable horizontal scrolling within virtualbox on Ubuntu guest, Windows 7 host?

  This post is a duplicate from superuser.com, but since I had no answers, I started to doubt it was a user question and maybe more of a programming question (because of the configuration files), so here it is: I am using Windows 7 as Host, Ubuntu Karmic as guest OS with guest tools installed and I get an annoying glitch when switching from host to the guest machine: vertical scrolling switches to horizontal! (using the mouse wheel). Since I don't really care about horizontal scrolling, how can I disable this? I have checked the web and the only thing I found was to play in the xorg.conf file and adding in the section "InputDevice" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" which would enable vertical scrolling only. The thing is, I don't have that section in my config file so I guessed that I would need to add Section "InputDevice" Identifier "VBoxMouse" Driver "vboxmouse" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" EndSection But that does not seem to work after restarting xserver. Any workaround for this?

• How to reuse a dropdownlist each row of a table instead of rebuilding it.

  I have a table the uses the same dropdown list in each row. I thought that I could just create one dropdown list and then reuse it in each new row, but the table only ends up with one row unless I create "new" dropdownlist. Am I approaching this all wrong? • Appcelerator Vs. MonoTouch - Which one is best for a .NET developer ?

  Hi All, I'm a .NET developer with 10 years experience developing Web & Mobile Apps. I'm looking to branch into iPhone (and possibly Android) development. I'm looking at two products: Appcelerator Titanium (http://www.appcelerator.com/) and MonoTouch (http://monotouch.net/) I like MonoTouch because of it's standing in the Mono development communitity and it's C#. In saying that Appcelerator looks very straight forward using HTML and Javascript and targets Android too (which is overtaking the iPhone). The apps I'm looking to develop are line of business applications with data entry, syncing with back office, etc. Can anyone give their opinion on the pro's / con's of using these tools or any experiences. • AVD Screen orientation not changing with CTRL+F11 or CTRL+F12

  I run my app in the AVD emulator using eclipse but I'm unable to change the screen orientation in the AVD (Android 2.0 platform on the emulator). When I press CONTROL+F11 or CONTROL+F12 on the keyboard, nothing happens. No messages are generated in the adb debuglog/logcat either when I press either hotkey. According to http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/emulator.html these are the correct hotkeys to switch the emulator's screen orientation. I tried it with my app, and with the messaging app. The hotkey has no affect in any case. I'm running Fedora 12, Gnome. I checked my Keyboard Shortcuts in the System - Preferences menu, nothing's attached to either hotkey. Same problem, 3 different PCs (all running Fedora Gnome).

• How to work with XAML editor in Visual Studio 2010?

  I've worked with Visual Studio 2008 and editing XAML was really painful because the designer reloaded very slowly. Now I have installed Visual Studio 2010 and it seems to me that the XAML editor + Designer haven't changed much. For example in order to force designer to change a color in my control I have to close the xaml file and open it again. Is it just my problem? • glibc backtrace - can't redirect output to file

  Hi, I'm in the process of debugging a C program (that I didn't write). I have all of the internal debugging tools (a whole bunch of printf's) enabled, and I wrote a small PHP script that uses proc_open() and just grabs both stdout and stderr, and time-coordinates them in one file. At the moment, the binary is dieing with a realloc() error that's caught by glibc, and a glibc backtrace is printed, beginning with: *** glibc detected *** /sbin/rsyslogd: realloc(): invalid next size: 0x00002ace626ac910 *** Here's the thing I don't understand: I've confirmed that the PHP script is catching both stdout and stderr from the binary's process and writing them to the correct files, but this backtrace is still printed to the console. Where is this coming from? Is there some magical output channel other than stdout and stderr? Any ideas on how I go about capturing this backtrace to a file, or sending it out with stderr?   An app (C#4, WinForms, Entity Framework, SQL Server 2008) of mine maintains a graph of interconnected objects, each having some simple member fields and a set of many directed (in and out) one-to-one links to other objects. I'd like to offer a user an ability to view and edit this graph visually some way, creating and removing connections, modifying objects attributes values and introducing/dropping objects. I suppose there has to be a framework (at list a primitive kind of) for this as visual model design tools are pretty common to meet. Do you know one?

• VB.net Edit-And-Continue: ignore "unable to apply this change while debugging"

  When using VB.Net (2008) and paused in debugging, Edit-And-Continue is a great time-saver. However if you change any module/class-level information (variable, sub/function signature, etc), you get the error message like this: "unable to apply this change while debugging" While I can understand the technical challenge to making this work (and why it would be hard), it leaves me in a tight spot with just a few options: 1) Restart and recompile and get the program back to the same state 2) Continue debugging without making the change, and risk forgetting 3) Type up a reminder note to make the change All of which are annoying. Now I know that option '4) Just actually make the change' may not be possible. but does anybody know how to enable the following 'technically easy' possibility? 4) Let me change the code, get it flagged with the purple squiggly underline, so I can save it, but just ignore the change until recompile I have checked the Tools|options|debug|edit and continue, nothing appears to let me do this. thanks!

  I have a great deal of javascript that needs to be min'd before being served to the end user. Currently, I'm using JSMIN, but I'd like to switch to something a bit more powerful (such as something with local variable replacement). I'm currently looking at YUI min developed by yahoo, and it got me thinking about the min tool that jquery uses. Does anyone know what it is and if it's publicly available? Also, any recommendations on other min tools that might be better suited than YUI min? If possible, I'd like a java solution so I can just plug the library into what I've already created for the JSMIN solution. Thanks

  Hey guys, For our webapp testing environment we're currently using watin with a bunch of unit tests, and we're looking to move to selenium and use more frameworks. We're currently looking at Selenium2 + Gallio + Xunit.net, However one of the things we're really looking to get around is compiled testcases. Ideally we want testcases that can be edited in VS with intellisense, but don't require re-compilling the assembly every single time we make a small change, Are there any frameworks likely to help with this issue? Are there any nice UI tools to help manage massive ammount of testcases? Ideally we want the testcase writing process to be simple so that more testers can aid in writing them. cheers

  I am working on an online portal, where researchers can upload their research papers. One requirement is, that all PDFs are stored in PDF/A-format. As I can't rely on the users to generate PDF/A conforming documents, I need a tool to check and convert standard PDFs into PDF/A format. What is the best tool you know of? Price Quality Speed Available APIs Open-source tools would be prefered, but a search revealed none. iText can create PDF/a, but converting isn't easy to do, as you have to read every page and copy it to a new document, losing all bookmarks and annotations in this process. (At least as far as I know, if you know of an easy solution, let me know). APIs should be available for either PHP, Java or a command-line-tool should be provided. Please do not list either GUI-only or Online-only solutions.

While No.1 framework is Intraweb, there is a lot of interest around ExtJS, that has 2 incarnations: 1) the opensource ExtPascal 2) the closedsource Raudus Now the products are different, Raudus never supports the latest ExtJS version (while ExtPascal does because as far as I read it "almost automatically updates itself to the latest ExJS version"), Raudus "seems" much RAD (much similar to Intraweb from the RAD point of view). Anyway why chose one or the other? Why Raudus since it is free cannot become Open Source?

• Disabling single line copy in Visual Studio

  Is there anyway to disable the rather annoying feature that Visual Studio (2008 in my case) has of copying the line (with text on it) the cursor is on when CTRL-C is pressed and no selection is made? I know of the option to disable copying blank lines. But this is driving me crazy as well. ETA: I'm not looking to customize the keyboard shortcut. ETA-II: I am NOT looking for "Tools-Options-Text Editor-All Languages-Apply cut or copy to blank lines...".

• NDepend: How to not display 'tier' assemblies in dependency graph?

  I was able to do this in an earlier version of nDepend by going to tools-options and setting which assemblies would be part of the analysis (and ignore the rest). The latest version of the trial version of nDepend lets me set it, but it seems to ignore the setting and always analyze all assemblies whether I want it to or not. I tried to delete the "tier" assemblies by moving them over to the "application assemblies" list, but when I delete them out of there, they just get added back to the "tier" list, which I can't ignore. I don't want my dependency graph to contain assemblies like "system," "system.xml," and "system.serialization!" I want only MY assemblies in the dependency graph! Or is that a paid-version feature now? Is there a way to do what I'm talking about?

  I try to be very cautious with this question. There are at least three different web-development frameworks available in Smalltalk. The most prominent seems to be Seaside but there is also AIDA/Web and Iliad. They seems to be very similiar, but this impresson may be wrong. I wonder who has tried the different tools and can share the pros/cons of the different packages. A more concrete question would be, do yo know of let's say any software in the bookkeeing area which has choosen to use either of the three (or other) web development frameworks.

• Porting Django's templates engine to C

  Hi folks, I recently wrote a simple and tiny embedded HTTP server for my C++ app (QT) and I played a little bit with Ry's http-parser and loved it. This guy is crazy. So I told to myself: "Hey! Why not port the django template engine to C?" That'd be awesome! I know, it won't be an easy task (not at all, I know) but I'd really love to implement this. So I came here for inspiration, ideas, opinions... I'd really love to have some pointers on the subject, ideas, what is already done, which major problems I'll encounter (and how to solve them) - How not to reinvent the wheel... anyway, you got the idea :) Thanks a million times!
