  • Efficient PuTTy workflow / configuration

    PuTTy is a fine SSH client, but how do you get a workflow managed as slickly as OpenSSH on Unix? My issues with PuTTy's management are: PuTTy tools are not in my PATH (easily fixable) PuTTy seems to have no equivalent of ~/.ssh, so I end have to manually choose locations for my keypairs, and then manually tell all the tools where to find them every time The private key's read permissions seem lax (I might be wrong about this, I a klutz on Windows). Pageant doesn't run by default (easily fixable?) Other programs don't reliably find pageant I suspect all of these problems can be fixed if I just get set my system up properly, and/or organise a nice workflow that fits into PuTTy's way of doing things. So can anyone share some success stories about managing PuTTy?

    I have an excel spreadsheet that is password-protected. I need to open this spreadsheet and read the data from it. I've been attempting to use the POI API to no avail. A Java solution would be preferred but any ideas would be helpful. Edit: Yes, I have the password. Edit2: I am unable to open it with POI with the password, I am looking for an alternate solution.

    Google C++ development conventions outlaw exceptions, RAII, RTTI and bans the default parameter in parseInt(number, radix=10). Qt API style guide is brilliant, but only covers interfaces. The Robert C. Martin series Clean Code has M104 galaxy on the cover, but it is 462 pages long and based on Java, with no simple "do this" digest. Assuming that it is important to synchronize style and best practices across the organization, what is the smartest, most pleasant and useful conventions document you have worked with?

  • Is PyOpenGL a good place to start learning opengl programing?

    I want to start learning OpenGL but I don't really want to have to learn another language to do it. I already am pretty proficient in python and enjoy the language. I just want to know how close it is to the regular api? Will I be able to pretty easily follow tutorials and books without too much trouble? I know C++ gives better performance, but for just learning can I go wrong with PyOpenGL? Thanks alot

  • Is there a real code-free webpage design tool ?

    Recently I was doing web design. I found that the current web design tool (like Expression Web, Dreamweaver) is terribly coupled with code. Though I managed to use HTML, CSS and many others, I found those tool not free enough when came to design. What I want is a totaly code-free design tool with which I can use to draw the layout, paste pictures, add texts and so on. It doesn't need to have functionality to covert the design into code because I can do it myself. That is to say, I need the software to create a blueprint for me. I'm currently using Photoshop to do this. However it is too stupid in displying the layout (It can't show the width and many other attributes, I had to draw them by myself). Can you find one for me?     I am writing a small code to detect number of objects left behind after certain actions in our tool. This uses FollowReferences() JVMTI-API. This counts instances reachable by all paths. How can I skip paths that included weak/soft/phantom reference? (IterateThroughHeap counts all objects at the moment, so the number is not fully reliable) Thanks, Jayan

  • Connecting a USB laptop to a RJ45 serial port

    We are about to get our first managed switch at work (Procurve 2520G-24-PoE), and this lowly programmer gets to put on his admin hat and try to configure it. The switch has an RJ45 serial port for console access. My laptop has USB ports but no serial port. In fact, there isn't a single computer in the office with a serial port. I've seen USB-to-DB9 adapters, but I need to go from USB to RJ45 (serial). How would I go about accomplishing this? Do I need two adapters? Will USB-to-DB9 and then DB9-to-RJ45 work?   • How to configure sudoers to always keep LD_LIBRARY_PATH envrionment variable?

    No matter what I try, it seems that the LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable is not kept after I run a command with sudo. The only way I managed to have it stick, is to prefix my sudo command with LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/the/path whenever I call it from the command-line, but I would like to not have to do this every time. It seems the env_keep option ignores this variable, and so does the exempt_group option. My %group currently has ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD:ALL as its access in sudoers. I would like this specific environment variable to be kept for any command I run. How can I do this? My server is running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.7.

    I'd like to turn Powerpoint presentations to SWF files the same way that OpenOffice does it, except automatically through a command line call. I came across http://stackoverflow.com/questions/886144, which led me to explore PyUNO bridge, which comes with OpenOffice as well as the OpenOffice command line API, but I wasn't able to make anything productive of it. Any guidance is appreciated. If there is a good solution outside of OpenOffice, I would be happy to try it too.

I'm looking for advice on the best way to handle this, and any recommendations on SDK's that could abstract this task for me (free/open-source preferred, but commercial ones are welcome as long as the price is not high for a one-man-starting-company to afford). ps.   • machine crash when connecting to external harddisk

    i recently had a problem with my laptop. when i booted up the machine, i would get a SMART failure error message and when i pressed F1 to continue, it would take a very long time to boot and it would come back to the same error message again. thinking that my hard disk was dying, i bought a new hard disk and installed on my laptop and so now my laptop is alright. however i need to recover data from that old hard disk, so i bought an external hard disk case and placed the old hard disk onto the case and connected to my laptop with USB. the first few times when i connected, i could see the files from the old hard disk and managed to copy some files over although it took extremely long to transfer. but now whenever i connect to the old hard disk, after a few minutes, my laptop will crash and re-boot. do you think my old hard disk is dead beyond repair? or you can offer some help here? any assistance would be appreciated!

  • how to prevent log output from PostgreSQL stored procedure ?

    I am running a number of PostgreSQL scripts that used to produce excessive log output. I managed to reduce most of the output to an acceptable amount by passing --quiet as parameter to the psql command line client and adding SET client_min_messages='warning'; to the beginning of my SQL scripts. This works fine for most basic statements like SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, etc.) However, when I call a stored function in a script using e.g. SELECT my_func(my_args);, there is still log output similar to my_func (omitted a long with many '-' here because SF thinks that's a headline) (1 row) The output is useless; it only makes me having to scroll back up a long way after the script has run and also makes it much harder than necessary to spot any relevant error output. How can I get rid of it ?

  • Exchange 2010 Room Mailbox Calendar Permissions

    Exchange 2010 sp2 Outlook 2007/2010 Server 2008 I have managed to set up several room mailboxes in exchange, people are able to book the rooms and they get a response from the exchange server. this is brilliant. however users are unable to view the calendar of the room mailbox to see what times are available, in a ideal world I would like users to only see if the room is free or not. I dont want users to see the details of the meeting (title, description etc) I have been trying to do this using the following command Add-MailboxFolderPermission -Identity meetingroom -User "Usergroup" -AccessRights AvailabilityOnly -DomainController AD-Server This throws the following error Specified argument was out of the range of valid values. Parameter name: memberRights + CategoryInfo : NotSpecified: (meetingroom:MailboxFolderIdParameter) [Add-MailboxFolderPermission], Argum entOutOfRangeException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : CBC6516F,Microsoft.Exchange.Management.StoreTasks.AddMailboxFolderPermission Any help on the situation would be brilliant, i have been trying to get this done for a couple of days and im going around in circles.

    if my VM's are not created using virt-manager or are created using any other tool, then virsh system list command does not give them in the list of running VM's however they are running perfectly on my KVM server. Is there a way to list these VM's in my system list anyhow? I have VM's managed by GKVM, AQEMU, libvirt etc. also some of the user start their VM's using the qemu command as follows: kvm "image name" -m "memory". this starts the VM and allow them to work perfectly. but I am not able to list all these VM's using the virsh system list command.

  • Missing disk space in Windows XP

    On my mother's Lenovo laptop, Windows XP claims that the hard drive is almost full. According to the properties window, 52.7 out of 55.2 GB is in use: By deleting temp files from Internet Explorer, System Restore, Recycle bin, Windows Update, System Cleanup, I managed to free up about one GB. That's still 50 GB in use, which still is a lot more than I expected. Hence, I gave good old WinDirStat a spin, and here's the output: It might be hard to read here, but the first line says that the total amount of disk space in use on drive C is 24.3 GB. So Windows claims usage of 52.7 GB and WinDirStat can only account for 24.3 GB. Where is the other half of that disk space being used? I hope someone has an answer, or some tricks or tips to do further research. UPDATE: The laptop in question has an SSD hard drive. I am aware that these disk (at least the earlier ones) have a limited life-time. Could the symptoms described be caused by wear and tear on the SSD?

    there is a bunch of servers connected to shared storage in a private LAN (10.x.x.x). this privateLAN is managed by a windows server (DHCP, DNS and directory services) these hosts need to be from outside of the datacenter Eg. Remote desktop. can the NIC2 on each of the hosts be connected to the other public LAN (compromising speed or security? what are improtant considerations: additional hardware? like switches? routing&DNS software? currently available hardware : Dell Powerconnect 6224 switch .... planning this for storage network. software: windows 2003 server for DHCP, DNS, A/D ? would it be more flexible to use Linux distributions like IPCOP, Untangle etc? all that I am looking for is good isolation between private and other networks, avoid DHCP, DNS, AD clashes.

    Hi, I want to access a file on remote machine(win2k3, 10.10.20.30), but i couldn't understand how to login to that machine in my program. is there any simple win api that takes network path, credentials and returns the handle? i just want to access \10.10.20.30\c$\test.txt, WNetAddConnection2, WNetAddConnection3 are little confusing.
