• What would you recommend for a large-scale Java data grid technology: Terracotta, GigaSpaces, Cohere

  I've been reading up on so-called "data grid" solutions for the Java platform including Terracotta, GigaSpaces and Coherence. I was wondering if anyone has real-world experience working any of these tools and could share their experience. I'm also really curious to know what scale of deployment people have worked with: are we talking 2-4 node clusters or have you worked with anything significantly larger than that? I'm attracted to Terracotta because of its "drop in" support for Hibernate and Spring, both of which we use heavily. I also like the idea of how it decorates bytecode based on configuration and doesn't require you to program against a "grid API." I'm not aware of any advantages to tools which use the approach of an explicit API but would love to hear about them if they do in fact exist. :) I've also spent time reading about memcached but am more interested in hearing feedback on these three specific solutions. I would be curious to hear how they measure up against memcached in the event someone has used both.

• Can I mark an Email as "High Importance" for Outlook using System.Net.Mail?

  Part of the application I'm working on for my client involves sending emails for events. Sometimes these are highly important. My client, and most of my client's clients, use Outlook, which has the ability to mark a mail message as High Importance. Now, I know it is callous to assume that all end users will be using the same interface, sp I am not. But considering you can send email from Outlook as High Importance even if the target is not necessarily reading through Outlook, that means that there is basically some data stored... somehow... that lets Outlook know if a particular message was assigned as High Importance. That's my interpretation, at least. The application currently uses System.Net.Mail to send out emails, using System.Net.Mail.MailMessages for writing them and System.Net.Mail.SmtpClient to send them. Is it possible to set this "High Importance" setting with System.Net.Mail's abilities? If not, is there any assembly available which can configure this setting?

I have done the Cross Platform Setting to run the Android Application on my Blackberry Z10 device, the application is running finely but I am not able to receive the Notification on my Blackberry Z10 device as Android. This is not the business metadata (nice descriptions etc), but rather data required for change management (also known as impact assesment), data lineage etc. I've seen this article Meta Meta Data Data - Ralph Kimball but as I'm not the first person to do this I'm throwing it to the SO community. The actual question is this: What metadata do datawarehouse developers require to design, develop and manage change in ETL routines? PS: I'm trying to keep the answer platform agnostic but for context this is an Oracle database with PL/SQL and Datastage.

• Using a Filter to serve a specific page?

  Hi, I am using a class which implements Filter for my jsp stuff. It looks like this: public class MyFilter implements Filter { public void doFilter(ServletRequest request, ServletResponse response, FilterChain chain) throws IOException, ServletException { request.getRequestDispatcher("mypage.jsp").forward(request, response); } } So the target, "mypage.jsp", is just sitting in my top-level directory. The filter works fine if I'm entering urls like: http://www.mysite.com/foo http://www.mysite.com/boo but if I enter a trailing slash, I'll get a 404: http://www.mysite.com/foo/ http://www.mysite.com/boo/ HTTP ERROR: 404 /foo/mypage.jsp RequestURI=/foo/mypage.jsp it seems if I enter the trailing slash, then the filter thinks I want it to look for mypage.jsp in subfolder foo or boo, but I really always want it to just find it at: http://www.mysite.com/mypage.jsp how can I do that? • Rewinding std::cout to go back to the beginning of a line

  I'm writing a command-line tool for Mac OS X that processes a bunch of files. I would like to show the user the current file being processed, but do not want a bazillion files polluting the terminal window. Instead I would like to use a single line to output the file path, then reuse that line for the next file. Is there a character (or some other code) to output to std::cout to accomplish this? Also, if I wanted to re-target this tool for Windows, would the solution be the same for both platforms?

  I am in a process to select javascript library for our new web application. This app is not very UI heavy but has forms, reports, search, calendars, tabs and target multiple countries like most web apps. We are a tiny team. Biggest concern is maintainability and readability of the code. We are Python programmers. After evaluating many other javascript frameworks we have narrowed down to mootools and google-closure. We loved mootools syntax. It took us no time to learn. It's like Python. On other hand we were stumped seeing private/public in google closure. It's tempting to go for mootools however, I would love to hear from you about specific advantages these frameworks offer over each other.

• Can I use android.os.* libraries in a standalone project?

  I'm trying to develop an external library (not sure if that's the right term) to provide prepackaged functionality in Android projects. Working in Eclipse, I've added the appropriate android.jar file to the build path, and everything is happy both while editing and upon compilation. However, when I use Android's Handler and Message classes (android.os.Handler, android.os.Message) for inter-thread communication, I get exceptions unless I'm running within an Android app, on the emulator or a device. I can no longer test my library in a "standalone" way without having to go through a running Android target. Is there any way for me to include these two Android classes and still be able to test my library standalone? Do I need to have the Android source available? Or would it require some sort of conditional compilation hand-waving?

  I have been loading an assembly via Assembly.LoadFrom(@"path"); and then doing Type t = asm.GetType("Test.Test"); test = Activator.CreateInstance(t, new Object[] { ... }); and it was working fine, but now I moved the dll I am getting the following System.Reflection.TargetInvocationException: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. --- System.Security.SecurityException: Request for the permission of type 'System.Security.Permissons.SecurityPermission, etc .. For the sake of brevity it seems the demand was for an PermissionSet that allowed ControlAppDomain and it's not getting it. My question is how can I create this permissionset and pass it to the instance or assembly? I've been googling for hours to no avail.

• Android Virtual Device freezing during its loading

  Hello, I've downloaded Eclipse Classic 3.5 Galileo, the last version of Android SDK, downloaded and installed Eclipse Android 1.6 platform. I've created first (and the only) AVD with Android 1.6 and the default skin. The log may show more: I've filtered only neccessary messages (warnings, errors). -http://www.clipboard.cz/63c As you can see, my new AVD has started in 16:17 and it was still loading in 17:35... • Issue with converting PDF pages to images with ImageMagick's convert (and PHP)

  I'm trying to create a small web service to convert PDF files to a series of images. When I run convert /full/path/to/source.pdf full/path/to/target.jpg when connected to the (shared hosting, Linux) server via ssh, everything works correctly. When executing the same command through PHP's exec() function, only the first few pages of the PDF file get converted. Sometimes the remaining pages are 0-length jpg files, sometimes they don't appear at all. Also, the bottom area of the first pages is sometimes black, as if convert stopped half-way on the page. What could be causing this problem?

  I want to open a FileDialog window into the user home folder (i.e. /home/user or /Users/unsername) I read the user home folder, using System.getProperty: String homefolder = System.getProperty(user.home); And the variable containts the correct home folder. But when i set the filterpath in FileDialog, it opens (in linux) only the /home level not entering into the user home dir. • Location tagging facebook open graph actions so that only friends in that location view in their feeds

  Is there a way to tag open graph actions so as to target certain recipients and not others? For example, if my app talks about new coffee shop openings in various cities, is there a way to publish the 'opening' action to the graph, perhaps with location / coordinates, such that this is only seen by friends in that locality? I really don't want to spam my friends in London about an opening I'm excited about in Portland. How can I help facebook with the feed relevance in these cases? I noticed that there is a "place" property on open graph objects - could this somehow be used?
