• Problem with all fn Keys for Thinkpad W520

  I have a problem with the fn. I used a live version of Ubuntu 11.10 on a USB stick to install Ubuntu on my Thinkpad W520. The fn keys worked perfectly in the live version, but do not work in the installed version. I would like to know what I have messed up. I can't seem to find the fix on google, except for inserting the shortcuts by hand, which seems a little brutal, since I know they can work without prior configuration. Thanks in Advance. Edit: The keys just started working out of the blue. I don't really know what my system did or what maybe I did. However all keys work fine now. Sorry for putting this now useless question here.

• Bitmap to Texture2D problem with colors

  I have a small problem with converting a bitmap to a Texture2D. The resulted image of the conversion has the red channel switched with the blue channel :/ I don't know why, because the pixel formats are the same. • To what extent do code-signing certificates boost sales of your software?

  In the experiences of everyone here, have you found a certificate to boost sales of your (downloadable) program? I produce .NET software and upon clicking the installation file, Windows 7 pops up a message saying the software is from an "unknown publisher" and to proceed with caution. For Windows 8, this appears to be even more prominent, and may adversely affect the number of downloads, and therefore the number of sales. A certificate will help soften this 'warning' by (for example) changing the warning's colour from orange to blue, and give the publisher's name instead of 'unknown'. But I'd like more tangible evidence since many people are obviously used to that message, and may not care and download anyway. So has anyone noticed a jump in sales after the switch?

• No longer able to boot stuck in busybox shell

  I've installed win 7 and ubuntu 11.04. After a storm killed the power. i'm unable to boot. I'm stuck in the busybox shell (ash). Here's what happens when i boot: Bios loads Grub displays option to load: ubuntu ubuntu recovery memtest another memtest option win7 win 7 recovery I load Ubuntu This cause it to load and i see no normal ubuntu screen just the busybox shell I try loading ubuntu via fsck -l; and it returns me a /bin/sh not found error. I load windows 7 and i'm unable to boot. I get a blue screen of death I then load ubuntu recovery and i don't have any luck either. Any ideas where to go from here?

• C# Tip - Rendering HTML in a Gridview cell

  Just a quick tip for working with the gridview in ASP.Net.  If your data column contains HTML text, you've probably seen something like this in your gridview after pulling the data: <font color="red">First Item</font><br/><font color="green">Second Item</font><br/><font color="blue">Third Item</font> To have the relevant column render in HTML, just go to your gridview property pages, find the column you need rendered in HTML, and click 'convert this Field into a TemplateField'.  The result is that as a template field, HTML within your bound data value will be rendered properly.  So our example above would transform into: First Item Second Item Third Item I primarily use this technique for enabling HTML content in comment fields, and to insert line breaks when building the data for these fields.   While going through the css specificity concept, I understood the fact that it is calculated as a 4 parts 1) inline (1000) 2) id (100) 3) class (10) 4) html elments (1) CSS with the highest rule will be applied to the corresponding element. I tried the following example Created more than 10 classes <div class="a1"> .... <div class="a13" id="id1"> TEXT COLOR </div> ... </div> and the css as .a1 .a2 .a3 .a4 .a5 .a6 .a7 .a8 .a9 .a10 .a11 .a12 .a13 { color : red; } #id1 { color: blue; } Now, even though in this case there are 13 classes the weight is 130. • Just too bright

  Like a lot of folks I am using SSMS and VS pretty much all day. But staring at the text on the stark white background can be a bit much for my eyes after a while. I have seen quite a few different “themes” for these apps which change all the colors around to make it easier on your eyes. Some of them are pretty cool but all I really wanted was to dim the background a little not radically change the way everything looked. Since the stock colors for comments, breakpoints, keywords and the like are so familiar I wanted a background that did not interfere with those colors. So I picked the following custom color for the item background. It comes off as a parchment type color. Hue: 42        Red: 244 Sat: 123    Green: 245 Lum: 221    Blue: 224

• How to play WMV files?

  I tried playing a WMV file in VLC and it told me something along the lines of Unable to play WMV3 files. Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this. When I try to open the same file in MPlayer, it tells me an Internal data stream error occurred. I finally got it to start playing in KPlayer, but it is really sketchy; it's black and white and there's a few random blue lines down the middle of the video. So is there any support for WMV3 files? P.S. the same WMV file plays fine on my PC. A different WMV file plays on Ubuntu fine.

• Sluggish/unresponsive trackpad on pre-unibody MacBook Pro

  I am running Ubuntu Natty Narwhal on pre-unibody MacBook Pro (2007 I believe). There seems to be a problem with trackpad - it barely works, in order to move cursor you have to move your finger a lot, and it terminates the 'gestures' abruptly - say you are moving the cursor with your finger and out of the blue it just stops, although the finger is still in contact with the surface of the trackpad. Those issues seem to dissapear as soon as I boot Mac OS X, so I suspect it is something Ubuntu-specific. Also, if I try to move the cursor with not just fingertip but increase the contact area, it seems to work just fine, although it is hardly convenient.

• Setup shortcut keys not working

  In my Ubuntu 12.04, in keyboard settings, I didn't find a shortcut key for restarting X, so in "Customer Shorcut", I set up Ctrl+Alt+Backspace for command sudo restart lightdm. But after that the shortcut doesn't work. Is it because it requires root privilege? Also I have a SysRq key on my keyboard, which I think to be the "Magic SysReq Key". My SysRq key is shared with PrtSc key (for screen shoot), and is in blue which means I have to press Fn key at the same time to invoke SysRq instead of PrtSC. But every time I press Fn+SysRq, it always shoots a photo of the screen, same as just hitting PrtSc i.e. without hitting Fn. I wonder how to use the Magic SysReq Key? Does it mean the shortcut has not been linked to any command that is supposed for Magic SysReq Key yet? PS: My laptop is Lenovo T400 and OS is Ubuntu 12.04. Thanks!

• How do I change the volume control icon?

  I recently switched to gnome 3 (love it!), but the default icon theme was a little dreary and gray, so I switched that back to ubuntu-mono-dark. But now whenever I change my volume, I get this ugly pixelated icon show up. The forum says I don't have enough reputation to post an screenshot, but it's pixelated and ugly with these fuzzy straight blue lines that turn on as the volume goes up. I found identical images in the Humanity and Humanity-Dark icon themes (one example: /usr/share/icons/Humanity/status/24/audio-volume-high.png). I tinkered with the images by changing their names, temporarily deleting them, etc. But it had no effect on the ugly icon. What file is responsible for violating the beauty of my desktop?! Once I find it, I can replace it.

  This post will be a part of Visual Studio 2012 series. Before some days Microsoft has released the release candidate version of Visual Studio 2012. Today I got installed Visual Studio 2012 and once I loaded the visual studio 2012 first things I noticed that there is purple color blank strip is there at bottom. After doing some R and D on internet I have found that it is used for the different indication. The purple color indicates that there is no project loaded now. Once you open the project this line will be of blue color like below. Once you run and F5 and debug it, the color will change to orange like below . Isn’t that great? • RPi and Java Embedded GPIO: Connecting LEDs

  Next, we need some low-level peripherals to connect to the Raspberry Pi GPIO header. So, we'll do what's called a "Fry's Run" in Silicon Valley, which means we go shop at the local Fry's Electronics store for parts. In this case, we'll need some breadboard jumper wires (blue wires in photo), some LEDs, and some resistors (for the RPi GPIO, 150 ohms - 300 ohms would work for the 3.3V output of the GPIO ports). And, if you want to do other projects, you might as well by a breadboard, which is a development board with lots of holes in it. Ask a Fry's clerk for help. Or, better yet, ask the customer standing next to you in the electronics components aisle for help. (Might be faster) So, go to your local hobby electronics store, or go to Fry's if you have one close by, and come back here to the next blog post to see how to hook these parts up. Hinkmond

• How to create Windows XP LiveUSB using Ubuntu to replace it

  I am using an Acer Aspire One netbook with no CD-disk drive, and would like to uninstall Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and install Windows XP in its place. The problem here is that I can't seem to find a program that can put the windows boot files on a USB drive from an ISO file. I have Ubuntu fully installed and have tried using unetbootin. When I tried booting from unetbootin I got a screen with a blue box that had the word "default" in it highlighted. underneath the box there was a countdown that said "will boot from default in 10" after the countdown finished the number would revert to ten and nothing would happen. Can someone tell me another program that would be useful for this please?

• Inexpensive Business Checks

  One of the most annoying things when setting up a business is paying the outrageous fees for business checks.  When starting out, rather than pay the $150 for the handful of computer printable checks, I had bought software that would create the checks for me.  But if you didn’t know, those little digits at the bottom of a check are magnetically encoded and requires special ink. Fortunately, my current bank has one of the best bill pay websites, so I have exclusively used it.  But since I recently had to open a new bank account, I went off in search of a cheap alternative for business checks.  A bit wary of some of the printers, I opted for TechChecks and was extremely surprised a few days later when my checks arrived in perfect condition.  (I recommend the diamond prismatic red-blue-green checks.  Beautiful and very professional looking.) It was perfect timing as well, since I now have to reorder some checks for another account.

• google webmaster showing 6 pages submitted 0 indexed, yet i can see them all there when i search in google?

  I have a small 'brochure' type site with 6 pages, i can see them all the pages showing up in google when i search for my site. But in webmaster tools under the sitemaps section it says 6 submitted, (the blue bar of the graph), but the indexed pages - the red bar is showing 0 indexed pages, even though they seem to be indexed ? any idea why this is ? I dont really think its that important as the pages are still indexed, but it just seems odd. =================================================== UPDATE 9/3/12 having just looked in google webmaster its showing that there are 11 pages indexed, under the health index status tab.. but under the optimization sitemap tab it shows 6 urls submitted but only 1 indexed ? please see images bellow index status: Sitemap status:

  im trying to do this tutorial: http://wiki.accelereyes.com/wiki/index.php/Installing_CUDA_Under_Ubuntu_10.04 I need the command that would completely stop/turn off the x-server. when i try to install the nvidia developer driver, i get a blue screen telling my Error:cant install with x-server running, please turn it off (something like that). "sudo service gdm stop" worked at the time i guess, (didnt give any errors) but the x-server is still running. is this the command i should be using? thanks for anyhelp!

• SOLVED BleachBit: How to Completely Clear URL History in Firefox?

  14.04 / Firefox 29.0 I've been using Bleachbit to clear usage/file history, and for the most part it works great. However, it doesn't seem to clear the website hostnames out of the URL, at all. These addresses are not bookmarked. Also, the total URL isn't preserved, just the hostname. Visit site http://www.bluesnews.com/some_random_URL_string Exit Firefox Run Bleachbit, with ALL Firefox options selected Restart Firefox Check history: completely empty, other than bookmarked sites. www.bluesnews is NOT bookmarked Type "blue" which is Firefox automatically completes as "http://www.bluesnews.com/" Alternate Step #3: Use Firefox's built-in "Clear History" and select ALL entries with a time frame of "Everything". Same result as above. My inquiry in BB forums hasn't been responded to. I found Dan's proposed solution, however changing autocomplete in about:config only turns off the function, it doesn't actually stop storing URLs. • What algorithms would suit image colour summarization? [on hold]

  I would like to analyse a set of hundreds of thousands of product images (clothing, electronic goods etc) and retrieve the dominant colours in each. I'm only interested in the top 3 or 4 colours. The aim is to achieve a degree of certainty that x image is mostly red or image y is mostly orange and blue. The images are likely to be colour jpegs of reasonable quality and approximately 100kb in size. I would like to use C# and the solution should run on a Linux server, preferably using open source libraries. What image processing algorithms or techniques might help me achieve this?

• Efficient way to calculate "vision cones" on 2D tile map?

  I'm trying to calculate which tiles a particular unit can "see" if facing a certain direction on a tile map (within a certain range and angle of facing). The easiest way would be to draw a certain number of tiles outward and raycast to each tile. However, I'm hoping for something slightly more efficient. A picture says a thousand words: The red dot is the unit (who's facing upwards). My goal is to calculate the yellow tiles. The green blocks are walls (walls are between tiles, and it's easy to check if you can pass between two tiles). The blue line represents something like the "raycasting" method I was talking about, but I'd rather not have to do this. EDIT: Units can only be facing north/south/east/west (0, 90, 180, or 270 degrees) and FoV is always 90 degrees. Should simplify some calculations. I'm thinking there's some sort of recursive-ish/stack-based/queue-based algorithm, but I can't quite figure it out. Thanks!
