• What's a good matrix manipulation library available for C ?

- by banister
Hi, I am doing a lot of image processing in C and I need a good, reasonably lightweight, and above all FAST matrix manipulation library. I am mostly focussing on affine transformations and matrix inversions, so i do not need anything too sophisticated or bloated. Primarily I would like something that is very fast (using SSE perhaps?), with a clean API and (hopefully) prepackaged by many of the unix package management systems. Note this is for C not for C++. Thanks :)

• Are there any protocols/standards on top of TCP optimized for high throughput and low latency?

- by Nosrama
Are there any protocols/standards that work over TCP that are optimized for high throughput and low latency? The only one I can think of is FAST. At the moment I have devised just a simple text-based protocol delimited by special characters. I'd like to adopt a protocol which is designed for fast transfer and supports perhaps compression and minification of the data that travels over the TCP socket.

• Does the Python 3 interpreter have a JIT feature?

- by guz
I found that when I ask something more to Python, python doesn't use my machine resource at 100% and it's not really fast, it's fast if compared to many other interpreted languages, but when compared to compiled languages i think that the difference is really remarkable. It's possible to speedup things with a JIT compiler in Python 3 ? Usually a JIT compiler is the only thing that can improve performances in interpreted languages, so i'm referring to this one, if other solutions are available i would love to accept new answers.

• Very difficult question !

- by cibercitizen1
I'm absolutely impressed by how fast the questions are answered. Some guys seems to be spending all day long waiting for questions: congratulations ! Your help is very appreciated, really. but ... I guess you don't work, don't have friends, or family, even you don't sleep at all? Do you? Or how do you manage to be so fast?

• Database design (MySql)::should we put html data in text field inside database table or more efficie

- by meyosef
Hi, We building big Web Application and we use mysql, we want to make mysql database more fast. Some of us think if we will put message html body inside table and not inside text.txt in will make database heavy and not fast. Thanks, *Part of main table that hold message: option 1:hold html message body inside database message { id (int) subject (varchar) body (text) } option 2: hold html message body inside body1.txt file message { id (int) subject (varchar) file_body_path (varchar) } *

• Random selection in jQuery

- by danit
Im using the following function to hide a series of forms on a page: $('.ask').toggle(function() { $(this).text('-').next('.addtitle').slideDown('fast'); }, function() { $(this).text('+').next('.addtitle').slideUp('fast'); }); There can be anything from 0 to 5 forms on the page all with the class .ask What I want to be able to do is to select one form NOT to hide, so the jQuery needs to hide all put one of the forms on the page randomly. How can I achieve this?

• show div for a set time, then hide it

- by Patrick
Im using jquery for various things on my site, but one thing im not sure how to do, is have it show an element, then wait X seconds, and hide the element. $('#form').ajaxForm(function() { $('#cartcontents').fadeOut("fast").load('cart.php').fadeIn("fast"); }); That's the JavaScript that I'm using now. How could I have it (when the form submits) display the div #notice for 5 seconds, then fadeOut?

• Returning an error code in Erlang

- by Zubair
I'm writing some Erlang code and I'm very unsure whether I should let everything fail fast. One problem I find with fail fast is that for the developer/user the exception generated is pretty meaningless. Any idea what I should return which would not give esoteric and hard to read stack traces?

• Huge performance difference between two web servers, odd behavior seen using process monitor

- by Francis Gagnon
We have two Coldfusion servers that have a huge performance difference running the exact same code on the exact same input data. The code in questions instantiates a large amount of CFCs (Coldfusion Components, which are similar to objects in OOP languages). I compared the two servers by running Process Monitor and then calling the problematic code on both machines. I learned two things. First, Coldfusion opens CFC files every time it instantiates an object. Both servers do this, so it cannot be the cause of the performance difference. Second, the fast server opens the CFC files directly while the server with the performance problem seems to navigate its way through the path until it reaches the desired CFC file. It does this for every file, even the ones it has previously loaded, and because the code instantiates so many CFCs it becomes very slow. See below the partial Promon traces that show this behavior. It can take over 60 seconds for the slow server to do what the fast one does in 2 seconds. Can anyone tell me what causes this behavior? Is it a Coldfusion setting? Since Coldfusion runs on top of Java, is it a Java setting? Is it an OS option? The fast server is running Windows XP and I think the slow server is a Windows Server 2003. Bonus question: Coldfusion doesn't seem to perform any READ FILE operations on any of the CFC or CFM files. How can this be? Sample of the fast server opening CFC files: 11:25:14.5588975 jrun.exe QueryOpen C:\CF\wwwroot\APP\com\HtmlUtils.cfc 11:25:14.5592758 jrun.exe CreateFile C:\CF\wwwroot\APP\com\HtmlUtils.cfc 11:25:14.5595024 jrun.exe QueryBasicInformationFile C:\CF\wwwroot\APP\com\HtmlUtils.cfc 11:25:14.5595940 jrun.exe CloseFile C:\CF\wwwroot\APP\com\HtmlUtils.cfc 11:25:14.5599628 jrun.exe CreateFile C:\CF\wwwroot\APP\com\HtmlUtils.cfc 11:25:14.5601600 jrun.exe QueryBasicInformationFile C:\CF\wwwroot\APP\com\HtmlUtils.cfc 11:25:14.5602463 jrun.exe CloseFile C:\CF\wwwroot\APP\com\HtmlUtils.cfc Equivalent sample of the slow server opening CFC files: 11:15:08.1249230 jrun.exe CreateFile D:\ 11:15:08.1250100 jrun.exe QueryDirectory D:\org 11:15:08.1252852 jrun.exe CloseFile D:\ 11:15:08.1259670 jrun.exe CreateFile D:\org 11:15:08.1260319 jrun.exe QueryDirectory D:\org\cli 11:15:08.1260769 jrun.exe CloseFile D:\org 11:15:08.1269451 jrun.exe CreateFile D:\org\cli 11:15:08.1270613 jrun.exe QueryDirectory D:\org\cli\cpn 11:15:08.1271140 jrun.exe CloseFile D:\org\cli 11:15:08.1279312 jrun.exe CreateFile D:\org\cli\cpn 11:15:08.1280086 jrun.exe QueryDirectory D:\org\cli\cpn\APP 11:15:08.1280789 jrun.exe CloseFile D:\org\cli\cpn 11:15:08.1291034 jrun.exe CreateFile D:\org\cli\cpn\APP 11:15:08.1291709 jrun.exe QueryDirectory D:\org\cli\cpn\APP\com 11:15:08.1292224 jrun.exe CloseFile D:\org\cli\cpn\APP 11:15:08.1300568 jrun.exe CreateFile D:\org\cli\cpn\APP\com 11:15:08.1301321 jrun.exe QueryDirectory D:\org\cli\cpn\APP\com\HtmlUtils.cfc 11:15:08.1301843 jrun.exe CloseFile D:\org\cli\cpn\APP\com 11:15:08.1312049 jrun.exe CreateFile D:\org\cli\cpn\APP\com\HtmlUtils.cfc 11:15:08.1314409 jrun.exe QueryBasicInformationFile D:\org\cli\cpn\APP\com\HtmlUtils.cfc 11:15:08.1314633 jrun.exe CloseFile D:\org\cli\cpn\APP\com\HtmlUtils.cfc 11:15:08.1315881 jrun.exe CreateFile D:\ 11:15:08.1316379 jrun.exe QueryDirectory D:\org 11:15:08.1316926 jrun.exe CloseFile D:\ 11:15:08.1330951 jrun.exe CreateFile D:\org 11:15:08.1338656 jrun.exe QueryDirectory D:\org\cli 11:15:08.1339118 jrun.exe CloseFile D:\org 11:15:08.1526468 jrun.exe CreateFile D:\org\cli 11:15:08.1527295 jrun.exe QueryDirectory D:\org\cli\cpn 11:15:08.1527989 jrun.exe CloseFile D:\org\cli 11:15:08.1531977 jrun.exe CreateFile D:\org\cli\cpn 11:15:08.1532589 jrun.exe QueryDirectory D:\org\cli\cpn\APP 11:15:08.1533575 jrun.exe CloseFile D:\org\cli\cpn 11:15:08.1538457 jrun.exe CreateFile D:\org\cli\cpn\APP 11:15:08.1539083 jrun.exe QueryDirectory D:\org\cli\cpn\APP\com 11:15:08.1539553 jrun.exe CloseFile D:\org\cli\cpn\APP 11:15:08.1544126 jrun.exe CreateFile D:\org\cli\cpn\APP\com 11:15:08.1544980 jrun.exe QueryDirectory D:\org\cli\cpn\APP\com\HtmlUtils.cfc 11:15:08.1545482 jrun.exe CloseFile D:\org\cli\cpn\APP\com 11:15:08.1551034 jrun.exe CreateFile D:\org\cli\cpn\APP\com\HtmlUtils.cfc 11:15:08.1552878 jrun.exe QueryBasicInformationFile D:\org\cli\cpn\APP\com\HtmlUtils.cfc 11:15:08.1553044 jrun.exe CloseFile D:\org\cli\cpn\APP\com\HtmlUtils.cfc Thanks

• IPsec tunnel to Android device not created even though there is an IKE SA

- by Quentin Swain
I'm trying to configure a VPN tunnel between an Android device running 4.1 and a Fedora 17 Linux box running strongSwan 5.0. The device reports that it is connected and strongSwan statusall returns that there is an IKE SA, but doesn't display a tunnel. I used the instructions for iOS in the wiki to generate certificates and configure strongSwan. Since Android uses a modified version of racoon this should work and since the connection is partly established I think I am on the right track. I don't see any errors about not being able to create the tunnel. • Does this prove a network bandwidth bottleneck?

- by Yuji Tomita
I've incorrectly assumed that my internal AB testing means my server can handle 1k concurrency @3k hits per second. My theory at at the moment is that the network is the bottleneck. The server can't send enough data fast enough. External testing from blitz.io at 1k concurrency shows my hits/s capping off at 180, with pages taking longer and longer to respond as the server is only able to return 180 per second. I've served a blank file from nginx and benched it: it scales 1:1 with concurrency. Now to rule out IO / memcached bottlenecks (nginx normally pulls from memcached), I serve up a static version of the cached page from the filesystem. The results are very similar to my original test; I'm capped at around 180 RPS. Splitting the HTML page in half gives me double the RPS, so it's definitely limited by the size of the page. If I internally ApacheBench from the local server, I get consistent results of around 4k RPS on both the Full Page and the Half Page, at high transfer rates. Transfer rate: 62586.14 [Kbytes/sec] received If I AB from an external server, I get around 180RPS - same as the blitz.io results. How do I know it's not intentional throttling? If I benchmark from multiple external servers, all results become poor which leads me to believe the problem is in MY servers outbound traffic, not a download speed issue with my benchmarking servers / blitz.io. So I'm back to my conclusion that my server can't send data fast enough. Am I right? Are there other ways to interpret this data? Is the solution/optimization to set up multiple servers + load balancing that can each serve 180 hits per second? I'm quite new to server optimization, so I'd appreciate any confirmation interpreting this data. Outbound traffic Here's more information about the outbound bandwidth: The network graph shows a maximum output of 16 Mb/s: 16 megabits per second. Doesn't sound like much at all. Due to a suggestion about throttling, I looked into this and found that linode has a 50mbps cap (which I'm not even close to hitting, apparently). I had it raised to 100mbps. Since linode caps my traffic, and I'm not even hitting it, does this mean that my server should indeed be capable of outputting up to 100mbps but is limited by some other internal bottleneck? I just don't understand how networks at this large of a scale work; can they literally send data as fast as they can read from the HDD? Is the network pipe that big? In conclusion 1: Based on the above, I'm thinking I can definitely raise my 180RPS by adding an nginx load balancer on top of a multi nginx server setup at exactly 180RPS per server behind the LB. 2: If linode has a 50/100mbit limit that I'm not hitting at all, there must be something I can do to hit that limit with my single server setup. If I can read / transmit data fast enough locally, and linode even bothers to have a 50mbit/100mbit cap, there must be an internal bottleneck that's not allowing me to hit those caps that I'm not sure how to detect. Correct? I realize the question is huge and vague now, but I'm not sure how to condense it. Any input is appreciated on any conclusion I've made.

• Prepping a conference

- by Laurent Bugnion
I have had the chance to talk at many conferences these past few years, and came up with a way to prepare them which works really well for me. Most importantly, it would make it quite easy to overcome an emergency (for example if my laptop would suddenly lose data). The whole code as well as the slides and other documents are in the cloud. I also use source control for my demos, so that I always have the latest and the greatest, but also a history of changes I made to my demos. Finally I have a system of code snippets which works great, and I often had very positive remarks from the audience regarding that. Putting everything in the cloud The one thing I used to be the most scared of was a sudden crash of my laptop, and being unable to restore in time for a conference. Most conferences ask speakers to send slides a few days (or weeks…) in advance, but let's face it, we all have last minute changes to our talks and I always come in the conference with updated slides that I pass to the management team. The answer to that dilemma used to be working off memory sticks, and that worked not bad. However last year I started putting all the documents relating to a conference in a DropBox folder, and that works great too. Obviously DropBox works only if you have connectivity, so if I for instance update slides while on an international flight, I cannot save to the cloud. The obvious answer to that is to backup everything on a memory stick… but I have to admit, I have been trusting my luck and working off my laptop HD and then synching everything to the cloud after landing. Of course on some US national flights you get WiFi on board, so in that case it is even simpler :) Usually after the conference is done, I remove the files from DropBox and copy them to their "final destination". They are backed up from there to BackBlaze, the great online backup service I am using routinely (I currently have about 90GB of data in BackBlaze). Outlining the presentations I like to have a written outline of my presentations written somewhere. I keep it simple, just write the various sections of the presentation with timing. I guess it is a remnant of the time when I was a private pilot, and using checklists for flight preparation. For example: Demo about designability 15' (0:37) Switch to Blend Open MainPage.xaml Create a DataTemplate ... Here I can immediately see during the presentation if I am taking too much time for my demo (0:37 is where I need to be when I am done with this section of the presentation, and 15' is the time that this particular section takes). I keep these sections reasonable, I don't detail every step of the preparation. Typically I have one such section for every 10-15 minutes of my talks. Yes, I am timing my presentations. I keep adjusting these numbers when I rehearse, and this really helps to feel more confident during the presentations. This is especially important for presentations that are long, like my MIX11 demo which clocked at 57 minutes (I had a lot of stuff to show…). Such presentations are risky, because if anything goes wrong, you will have to cut stuff, so the answer to that is: Rehearse, rehearse and when you're done rehearsing, rehearse a little more. I also have a "Preparation" section where I outline what I need to do before a presentation. For instance: Preparation Reboot in VHD Make sure MSN and Twitter are not running. Open VS10 and load demo Open Blend and load demo Run the WP7 emulator ... I typically start preparing my laptop an hour before the talk, starting everything I need to start and then putting my laptop to sleep. Saving and printing the outline, Timing Printing is a real problem because it is really hard to find a printer at most conference venues, and also quite hard in hotels. To solve that, I simply write everything in OneNote (synched to the cloud, now you start to know what I like ;) and then I print it to a PDF (I use CutePDFWriter) that I save to my Kindle. During the presentation, I read the outline off the Kindle (I mostly just need a quick check to see how I am timing). For timing during the presentation, I use the free tool ChronoGPS on my Windows Phone 7, but of course any phone these days has a clock/chrono application. In some conferences, they even have timers that the presenters can see, but they tend to count down and I prefer to count up… so I just use my own :) Source control for demos For demos, I create a separate folder and use Mercurial as source control. Mercurial has the huge advantage (over SVN or TFS) to work offline too, so I can commit while on a plane, and all the history is saved. Then when I have connectivity I push everything to the cloud (I am using the fantastic Trunksapp.com for my private repositories). Here too the obvious downside is the risk of losing my last changes if my laptop crashes before I can push to the cloud, and here too the obvious answer would be to work from a memory stick… though I have to admit I didn't do that lately (except when I was writing Silverlight 4 Unleashed, where I was really paranoid…) And code snippets? I am one of these presenters who hates to type in front of an audience. I can type really fast (writing two books has this advantage, it really teaches you to touch type and be fast at it) but in the context of an audience, on a stage where it is often damn cold (an issue I had a lot in past conferences, air conditioning can freeze your fingers and make it really hard to type), it doesn't work as well. I don't know for you, but I really dislike seeing a presentation where the speaker uses the backspace key more often than others ;) To solve that, I like to have my code ready in snippets, and drag them to the screen. Then I can spend time explaining each code snippet, while highlighting portions of the code (always highlight what you talk about, the audience often doesn't even see the cursor and doesn't know where you are on the screen!) Over the years I have used various solutions for code snippets, and now I have one which works really well… if you take a few precautions! I use the Visual Studio Toolbox. Preparing the code snippets You can store code snippets in the Toolbox for anything, XAML, C# etc. I arrange the snippets in the order in which I need them, which is a great way to remember what comes next in the presentation. I also separate them by topic, to make it easier to find them, for example when I switch to the slides and then back to the code. Remember that no matter how experienced you are, you will feel more nervous on stage than while you are preparing, so any way to make it easier for you is going to be beneficial to the audience. To store a code snippet, I do the following: Open the final demo that you want to show to the audience in Visual Studio. In your code, select a snippet of code that you want to explain in particular. Make sure that the Visual Studio Toolbox is open (menu View, Toolbox or Ctrl-Alt-X). Drag the selected snippet from the code window to the toolbox. (if needed) drag the snippet to the correct location (for example between two other code snippets so that you can access it as you speak through the demo). Right click on the snippet and select Rename Item from the context menu. Select a meaningful name. For me I use the following conventions: If it is a method, I use the method's name. If it is not a whole method, I use a descriptive name. If it is the content of a method (i.e. the body only, without the method's signature), I use "-> MethodName". This reminds me during the presentation that this is only the body, and that I need to insert that into an existing signature. This is the case, for instance, when I use Visual Studio to automatically generate the members of an interface’s implementation; then I only need to insert my snippet inside the generated method body. Saving the snippets This is the most important!! It happened to me a few times that VS10 lost its settings. When that happens, the snippets are lost too! Yeah that really sucks, especially (as it happened once) when this is the case about an hour before a talk… Stress and sweat follows, not good conditions to start a talk in front of an audience believe me. Thankfully, saving snippets is really easy with the following steps: Select the menu Tools, Import and Export Settings. Select Export selected environment settings and press Next. Uncheck All Settings. Then expand General Settings and select Toolbox (only!). Press Next. Select your source control folder and save under a meaningful name (for instance Snippets.vssettings). Commit to source control and push to the cloud. By the way, this also has the advantage of applying source control to the snippets file (which is an XML file), so you get history for free on that file! Reimporting the snippets If VS loses its settings and you need to reimport the snippets, this can be done super easily and very fast. Make sure that the Toolbox is empty. When you import snippets, they are merged with existing ones, they do not replace the content of the Toolbox. Unless merging is really what you want, make sure that your Toolbox is clean before you import, it is really easier. Select the menu Tools, Import and Export Settings. Select Import selected environment settings and press Next. Select No, just import new settings and press Next. Press Browse and select the Snippets.vssettings file. Press Finish. Et voila, all your snippets appear again in the Toolbox. Whew, the worst was averted and you can start your demo without sweating! (I had to do that once literally 5 minutes before the start of a demo, while my laptop was already hooked to the projector, and it went just fine). What about special tools? When using special tools (for example beta versions of tools you have an early access to), or a special configuration of your laptop, things can get tricky because you cannot really be sure that you will get a laptop with the same tools and the same configuration at the conference. To solve that, I use the following precautions: I make my demos from a Virtual Hard Disk. The great John Papa made a very easy-to-follow web page where he explains how to create a VHD and install Win7 to it. This gives you the full power of your laptop (as fast as booting from the metal). For me, I have a basic configuration that I saved on a USB harddrive (Win7 plus drivers, basic settings for desktop, folder options, taskbar etc) and Visual Studio 2010 SP1 on it. When preparing, I start by copying this "basis VHD" to my laptop. I install additional tools and configurations. I save the VHD back to the USB harddrive in a different folder. This would allow me to reinstall my demo environment quite fast, for example in case of harddrive failure. Replace the harddrive, copy the VHD to it, configure the BCD and you can start. Unfortunately this only works if the laptop itself still works. In the worst case of total failure, my security is to back all the installers up: The installers I use are synched on all my laptops and backed up to BackBlaze. If the worst happens and my laptop is absolutely broken, I can download the installer from BackBlaze and install on another laptop. This of course takes some time, and if that happens 5 minutes before a presentation, well… I don't have an answer to that, except of course crossing my fingers. Still, all that gives me additional security. Conclusion Remember folks, talking to an audience, large or small, will make you nervous. Just ask Scott Hanselman :) The goal here is to create the best possible conditions for you, and to create an environment where everything is saved and easy to restore, where everything is well known and provides you with additional confidence. The cooler you feel before the presentation (and during ;)), the better your presentation will be. Here too, the goal is to provide the best user experience you can have, which in turn will make it more enjoyable for your audience! Happy presenting :) Laurent Laurent Bugnion (GalaSoft) Subscribe | Twitter | Facebook | Flickr | LinkedIn

• What is Causing This Memory Leak in Delphi?

- by lkessler
I just can't figure out this memory leak that EurekaLog is reporting for my program. I'm using Delphi 2009. Here it is: Memory Leak: Type=Data; Total size=26; Count=1; The stack is: System.pas _UStrSetLength 17477 System.pas _UStrCat 17572 Process.pas InputGedcomFile 1145 That is all there is in the stack. EurekaLog is pointing me to the location where the memory that was not released was first allocated. According to it, the line in my program is line 1145 of InputGedcomFile. That line is: CurStruct0Key := 'HEAD' + Level0Key; where CurStruct0Key and Level0Key are simply defined in the procedure as local variables that should be dynamically handled by the Delphi memory manager when entering and leaving the procedure: var CurStruct0Key, Level0Key: string; So now I look at the _UStrCat procedure in the System Unit. Line 17572 is: CALL _UStrSetLength // Set length of Dest and I go to the _UStrSetLength procedure in the System Unit, and the relevant lines are: @@isUnicode: CMP [EAX-skew].StrRec.refCnt,1 // !!! MT safety JNE @@copyString // not unique, so copy SUB EAX,rOff // Offset EAX "S" to start of memory block ADD EDX,EDX // Double length to get size JO @@overflow ADD EDX,rOff+2 // Add string rec size JO @@overflow PUSH EAX // Put S on stack MOV EAX,ESP // to pass by reference CALL _ReallocMem POP EAX ADD EAX,rOff // Readjust MOV [EBX],EAX // Store MOV [EAX-skew].StrRec.length,ESI MOV WORD PTR [EAX+ESI*2],0 // Null terminate TEST EDI,EDI // Was a temp created? JZ @@exit PUSH EDI MOV EAX,ESP CALL _LStrClr POP EDI JMP @@exit where line 17477 is the "CALL _ReallocMem" line. So then what is the memory leak? Surely a simple concatenate of a string constant to a local string variable should not be causing a memory leak. Why is EurekaLog pointing me to the ReallocMem line in a _UStrSetLength routine that is part of Delphi? This is Delphi 2009 and I am using the new unicode strings. Any help or explanation here will be much appreciated.

• Upgrading Windows 8 boot to VHD to Windows 8.1–Step by step guide

- by Liam Westley
Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/twickers/archive/2013/10/19/upgrading-windows-8-boot-to-vhd-to-windows-8.1ndashstep-by.aspxBoot to VHD – dual booting Windows 7 and Windows 8 became easy When Windows 8 arrived, quite a few people decided that they would still dual boot their machines, and instead of mucking about with resizing disk partitions to free up space for Windows 8 they decided to use the boot from VHD feature to create a huge hard disc image into which Windows 8 could be installed. Scott Hanselman wrote this installation guide, while I myself used the installation guide from Ed Bott of ZD net fame. Boot to VHD is a great solution, it achieves a dual boot, can be backed up easily and had virtually no effect on the original Windows 7 partition. As a developer who has dual booted Windows operating systems for years, hacking boot.ini files, the boot to VHD was a much easier solution. Upgrade to Windows 8.1 – ah, you can’t do that on a virtual disk installation (boot to VHD) Last week the final version of Windows 8.1 arrived, and I went into the Windows Store to upgrade. Luckily I’m on a fast download service, and use an SSD, because once the upgrade was downloaded and prepared Windows informed that This PC can’t run Windows 8.1, and provided the reason, You can’t install Windows on a virtual drive. You can see an image of the message and discussion that sparked my search for a solution in this Microsoft Technet forum post. I was determined not to have to resize partitions yet again and fiddle with VHD to disk utilities and back again, and in the end I did succeed in upgrading to a Windows 8.1 boot to VHD partition. It takes quite a bit of effort though … tldr; Simple steps of how you upgrade Boot into Windows 7 – make a copy of your Windows 8 VHD, to become Windows 8.1 Enable Hyper-V in your Windows 8 (the original boot to VHD partition) Create a new virtual machine, attaching the copy of your Windows 8 VHD Start the virtual machine, upgrade it via the Windows Store to Windows 8.1 Shutdown the virtual machine Boot into Windows 7 – use the bcedit tool to create a new Windows 8.1 boot to VHD option (pointing at the copy) Boot into the new Windows 8.1 option Reactivate Windows 8.1 (it will have become deactivated by running under Hyper-V) Remove the original Windows 8 VHD, and in Windows 7 use bcedit to remove it from the boot menu Things you’ll need A system that can run Hyper-V under Windows 8 (Intel i5, i7 class CPU) Enough space to have your original Windows 8 boot to VHD and a copy at the same time An ISO or DVD for Windows 8 to create a bootable Windows 8 partition Step by step guide Boot to your base o/s, the real one, Windows 7. Make a copy of the Windows 8 VHD file that you use to boot Windows 8 (via boot from VHD) – I copied it from a folder on C: called VHD-Win8 to VHD-Win8.1 on my N: drive. Reboot your system into Windows 8, and enable Hyper-V if not already present (this may require reboot) Use the Hyper-V manager , create a new Hyper-V machine, using half your system memory, and use the option to attach an existing VHD on the main IDE controller – this will be the new copy you made in Step 2. Start the virtual machine, use Connect to view it, and you’ll probably discover it cannot boot as there is no boot record If this is the case, go to Hyper-V manager, edit the Settings for the virtual machine to attach an ISO of a Windows 8 DVD to the second IDE controller. Start the virtual machine, use Connect to view it, and it should now attempt a fresh installation of Windows 8. You should select Advanced Options and choose Repair - this will make VHD bootable When the setup reboots your virtual machine, turn off the virtual machine, and remove the ISO of the Windows 8 DVD from the virtual machine settings. Start virtual machine, use Connect to view it. You will see the devices to be re-discovered (including your quad CPU becoming single CPU). Eventually you should see the Windows Login screen. You may notice that your desktop background (Win+D) will have turned black as your Windows installation has become deactivate due to the hardware changes between your real PC and Hyper-V. Fortunately becoming deactivated, does not stop you using the Windows Store, where you can select the update to Windows 8.1. You can now watch the progress joy of the Windows 8 update; downloading, preparing to update, checking compatibility, gathering info, preparing to restart, and finally, confirm restart - remember that you are restarting your virtual machine sitting on the copy of the VHD, not the Windows 8 boot to VHD you are currently using to run Hyper-V (confused yet?) After the reboot you get the real upgrade messages; setting up x%, xx%, (quite slow) After a while, Getting ready Applying PC Settings x%, xx% (really slow) Updating your system (fast) Setting up a few more things x%, (quite slow) Getting ready, again Accept license terms Express settings Confirmed previous password Next, I had to set up a Microsoft account – which is possibly now required, and not optional Using the Microsoft account required a 2 factor authorization, via text message, a 7 digit code for me Finalising settings Blank screen, HI .. We're setting up things for you (similar to original Windows 8 install) 'You can get new apps from the Store', below which is ’Installing your apps’ - I had Windows Media Center which is counts as an app from the Store ‘Taking care of a few things’, below which is ‘Installing your apps’ ‘Taking care of a few things’, below ‘Don't turn off your PC’ ‘Getting your apps ready’, below ‘Don't turn off your PC’ ‘Almost ready’, below ‘Don't turn off your PC’ … finally, we get the Windows 8.1 start menu, and a quick Win+D to check the desktop confirmed all the application icons I expected, pinned items on the taskbar, and one app moaning about a missing drive At this point the upgrade is complete – you can shutdown the virtual machine Reboot from the original Windows 8 and return to Windows 7 to configure booting to the Windows 8.1 copy of the VHD In an administrator command prompt do following use the bcdedit tool (from an MSDN blog about configuring VHD to boot in Windows 7) Type bcedit to list the current boot options, so you can copy the GUID (complete with brackets/braces) for the original Windows 8 boot to VHD Create a new menu option, copy of the Windows 8 option; bcdedit /copy {originalguid} /d "Windows 8.1" Point the new Windows 8.1 option to the copy of the VHD; bcdedit /set {newguid} device vhd=[D:]\Image.vhd Point the new Windows 8.1 option to the copy of the VHD; bcdedit /set {newguid} osdevice vhd=[D:]\Image.vhd Set autodetection of the HAL (may already be set); bcdedit /set {newguid} detecthal on Reboot from Windows 7 and select the new option 'Windows 8.1' on the boot menu, and you’ll have some messages to look at, as your hardware is redetected (as you are back from 1 CPU to 4 CPUs) ‘Getting devices ready, blank then %xx, with occasional blank screen, for the graphics driver, (fast-ish) Getting Ready message (fast) You will have to suffer one final reboots, choose 'Windows 8.1' and you can now login to a lovely Windows 8.1 start screen running on non virtualized hardware via boot to VHD After checking everything is running fine, you can now choose to Activate Windows, which for me was a toll free phone call to the automated system where you type in lots of numbers to be given a whole bunch of new activation codes. Once you’re happy with your new Windows 8.1 boot to VHD, and no longer need the Windows 8 boot to VHD, feel free to delete the old one. I do believe once you upgrade, you are no longer licensed to use it anyway. There, that was simple wasn’t it? Looking at the huge list of steps it took to perform this upgrade, you may wonder whether I think this is worth it. Well, I think it is worth booting to VHD. It makes backups a snap (go to Windows 7, copy the VHD, you backed up the o/s) and helps with disk management – want to move the o/s, you can move the VHD and repoint the boot menu to the new location. The downside is that Microsoft has complete neglected to support boot to VHD as an upgradable option. Quite a poor decision in my opinion, and if you read twitter and the forums quite a few people agree with that view. It’s a shame this got missed in the work on creating the upgrade packages for Windows 8.1.

• Using Teleriks new LINQ implementation to create OData feeds

This week Telerik released a new LINQ implementation that is simple to use and produces domain models very fast. Built on top of the enterprise grade OpenAccess ORM, you can connect to any database that OpenAccess can connect to such as: SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle, SQL Azure, VistaDB, etc. While this is a separate LINQ implementation from traditional OpenAccess Entites, you can use the visual designer without ever interacting with OpenAccess, however, you can always hook into the advanced ORM features like caching, fetch plan optimization, etc, if needed. Just to show off how easy our LINQ implementation is to use, I will walk you through building an OData feed using Data Services Update for .NET Framework 3.5 SP1. (Memo to Microsoft: P-L-E-A-S-E hire someone from Apple to name your products.) How easy is it? If you have a fast machine, are skilled with the mouse, and type fast, you can do this in about 60 seconds via three easy steps. (I promise in about 2-3 weeks that you can do this in less then 30 seconds. Stay tuned for that.) Step 1 (15-20 seconds): Building your Domain Model In your web project in Visual Studio, right click on the project and select Add|New Item and select Telerik OpenAccess Domain Model as your item template. Give the file a meaningful name as well. Select your database type (SQL Server, SQL Azure, Oracle, MySQL, VistaDB, etc) and build the connection string. If you already have a Visual Studio connection string already saved, this step is trivial. Then select your tables, enter a name for your model and click Finish. In this case I connected to Northwind and selected only Customers, Orders, and Order Details. I named my model NorthwindEntities and will use that in my DataService. Step 2 (20-25 seconds): Adding and Configuring your Data Service In your web project in Visual Studio, right click on the project and select Add|New Item and select ADO .NET Data Service as your item template and name your service. In the code behind for your Data Service you have to make three small changes. Add the name of your Telerik Domain Model (entered in Step 1) as the DataService name (shown on line 6 below as NorthwindEntities) and uncomment line 11 and add a * to show all entities. Optionally if you want to take advantage of the DataService 3.5 updates, add line 13 (and change IDataServiceConfiguration to DataServiceConfiguration in line 9.) 1: using System.Data.Services; 2: using System.Data.Services.Common; 3: 4: namespace Telerik.RLINQ.Astoria.Web 5: { 6: public class NorthwindService : DataService<NorthwindEntities> 7: { 8: //change the IDataServiceConfigurationto DataServiceConfiguration 9: public static void InitializeService(DataServiceConfiguration config) 10: { 11: config.SetEntitySetAccessRule("*", EntitySetRights. All); 12: //take advantage of the "Astoria3.5 Update" features 13: config.DataServiceBehavior.MaxProtocolVersion = DataServiceProtocolVersion.V2; 14: } 15: } 16: } .csharpcode, .csharpcode pre { font-size: small; color: black; font-family: consolas, "Courier New", courier, monospace; background-color: #ffffff; /*white-space: pre;*/ } .csharpcode pre { margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .rem { color: #008000; } .csharpcode .kwrd { color: #0000ff; } .csharpcode .str { color: #006080; } .csharpcode .op { color: #0000c0; } .csharpcode .preproc { color: #cc6633; } .csharpcode .asp { background-color: #ffff00; } .csharpcode .html { color: #800000; } .csharpcode .attr { color: #ff0000; } .csharpcode .alt { background-color: #f4f4f4; width: 100%; margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .lnum { color: #606060; } Step 3 (~30 seconds): Adding the DataServiceKeys You now have to tell your data service what are the primary keys of each entity. To do this you have to create a new code file and create a few partial classes. If you type fast, use copy and paste from your first entity, and use a refactoring productivity tool, you can add these 6-8 lines of code or so in about 30 seconds. This is the most tedious step, but dont worry, Ive bribed some of the developers and our next update will eliminate this step completely. Just create a partial class for each entity you have mapped and add the attribute [DataServiceKey] on top of it along with the keys field name. If you have any complex properties, you will need to make them a primitive type, as I do in line 15. Create this as a separate file, dont manipulate the generated data access classes in case you want to regenerate them again later (even thought that would be much faster.) 1: using System.Data.Services.Common; 2: 3: namespace Telerik.RLINQ.Astoria.Web 4: { 5: [DataServiceKey("CustomerID")] 6: public partial class Customer 7: { 8: } 9: 10: [DataServiceKey("OrderID")] 11: public partial class Order 12: { 13: } 14: 15: [DataServiceKey(new string[] { "OrderID", "ProductID" })] 16: public partial class OrderDetail 17: { 18: } 19: 20: } .csharpcode, .csharpcode pre { font-size: small; color: black; font-family: consolas, "Courier New", courier, monospace; background-color: #ffffff; /*white-space: pre;*/ } .csharpcode pre { margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .rem { color: #008000; } .csharpcode .kwrd { color: #0000ff; } .csharpcode .str { color: #006080; } .csharpcode .op { color: #0000c0; } .csharpcode .preproc { color: #cc6633; } .csharpcode .asp { background-color: #ffff00; } .csharpcode .html { color: #800000; } .csharpcode .attr { color: #ff0000; } .csharpcode .alt { background-color: #f4f4f4; width: 100%; margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .lnum { color: #606060; } Done! Time to run the service. Now, lets run the service! Select the svc file and right click and say View in Browser. You will see your OData service and can interact with it in the browser. Now that you have an OData service set up, you can consume it in one of the many ways that OData is consumed: using LINQ, the Silverlight OData client, Excel PowerPivot, or PhP, etc. Happy Data Servicing! • Decompiling a *.DLL to assembly for .net in delphi 4

- by Lex Dean
I love my Delphi 4 but at the same time I see the need to talk to windows .net This is a recompiled dll that I found on sourceforge.net/projects/delphinet/ (DelphiNet03.zip) by some nice people that fund the dll from some were. The real answer is to make this dll so that fits into Delphi as true Delphi code, and not a dll clip on. So we can make objects that use dot net in Delphi. Because I’m not an assembly freak, I’m freaking out a little with a wee sweek for help! 1/ How do I link the asm code with the data info at the bottom of this code. Can some one show me which calls to look for to make this link to data. 2/ I need to find the beginning of all the procedures and functions, but I cannot find a ‘RET’ statement. And what line is the beginning statement in this code. 3/ How do I identify were the jump statements go to, put them into Delphi format In this code it looks I can do:- jle 402890h \1000:00402854 7e3a add [eax], al \1000:00402856 0000 …………………………………………….. or ch, [edi+3eh] \1000:0040288d 0a6f3e xrefs first: 1000:00402854 number : 1 \; add [eax], al \1000:00402890 0000 //******************************* jle @@21 \\1000:00402854 7e3a add [eax], al \\1000:00402856 0000 …………………………………………….. or ch, [edi+3eh] \1000:0040288d 0a6f3e xrefs first: 1000:00402854 number : 1 \; @@21 add [eax], al \1000:00402890 0000 Is that a correct conversion. I think a xrefs first: 1000:004021d1 number : 1 is the best to follow 4/ I need a good reference on 8086 up assembly code that I can print out and get to learn properly. I found this asm decomplier of http://www.cronos.cc/ that is so similar to Delphi that it only needs a little more convertion to get it into Delphi asm I think. It’s only taken me 3 hours to get the file into TMemo and to write a few lines to chop the line over in a stream and reload the memo. • Imagemagick PDF to JPG conversion failing

I'm trying to convert the first page of a PDF to a JPG. I'm pretty sure I got this to work with certain PDFs, but is it really possible that certain PDFs are made incorrectly and cannot be converted? I tried running this first: $ convert 10-03-26.pdf[1] test.jpg And I got the follow: Error: /syntaxerror in readxref Operand stack: Execution stack: %interp_exit .runexec2 --nostringval-- --nostringval-- --nostringval-- 2 %stopped_push --nostringval-- --nostringval-- --nostringval-- false 1 %stopped_push 1 3 %oparray_pop 1 3 %oparray_pop --nostringval-- --nostringval-- --nostringval-- --nostringval-- --nostringval-- --nostringval-- Dictionary stack: --dict:1062/1417(ro)(G)-- --dict:0/20(G)-- --dict:73/200(L)-- --dict:73/200(L)-- --dict:97/127(ro)(G)-- --dict:229/230(ro)(G)-- --dict:14/15(L)-- Current allocation mode is local ESP Ghostscript 7.07.1: Unrecoverable error, exit code 1 convert: Postscript delegate failed `10-03-26.pdf'. • Linux Kernel programming: trying to get vm_area_struct->vm_start crashes kernel

- by confusedKid
Hi, this is for an assignment at school, where I need to determine the size of the processes on the system using a system call. My code is as follows: ... struct task_struct *p; struct vm_area_struct *v; struct mm_struct *m; read_lock(&tasklist_lock); for_each_process(p) { printk("%ld\n", p->pid); m = p->mm; v = m->mmap; long start = v->vm_start; printk("vm_start is %ld\n", start); } read_unlock(&tasklist_lock); ... When I run a user level program that calls this system call, the output that I get is: 1 vm_start is 134512640 2 EIP: 0073:[<0806e352] CPU: 0 Not tainted ESP: 007b:0f7ecf04 EFLAGS: 00010246 Not tainted EAX: 00000000 EBX: 0fc587c0 ECX: 081fbb58 EDX: 00000000 ESI: bf88efe0 EDI: 0f482284 EBP: 0f7ecf10 DS: 007b ES: 007b 081f9bc0: [<08069ae8] show_regs+0xb4/0xb9 081f9bec: [<080587ac] segv+0x225/0x23d 081f9c8c: [<08058582] segv_handler+0x4f/0x54 081f9cac: [<08067453] sig_handler_common_skas+0xb7/0xd4 081f9cd4: [<08064748] sig_handler+0x34/0x44 081f9cec: [<080648b5] handle_signal+0x4c/0x7a 081f9d0c: [<08066227] hard_handler+0xf/0x14 081f9d1c: [<00776420] 0x776420 Kernel panic - not syncing: Kernel mode fault at addr 0x0, ip 0x806e352 EIP: 0073:[<400ea0f2] CPU: 0 Not tainted ESP: 007b:bf88ef9c EFLAGS: 00000246 Not tainted EAX: ffffffda EBX: 00000000 ECX: bf88efc8 EDX: 080483c8 ESI: 00000000 EDI: bf88efe0 EBP: bf88f038 DS: 007b ES: 007b 081f9b28: [<08069ae8] show_regs+0xb4/0xb9 081f9b54: [<08058a1a] panic_exit+0x25/0x3f 081f9b68: [<08084f54] notifier_call_chain+0x21/0x46 081f9b88: [<08084fef] __atomic_notifier_call_chain+0x17/0x19 081f9ba4: [<08085006] atomic_notifier_call_chain+0x15/0x17 081f9bc0: [<0807039a] panic+0x52/0xd8 081f9be0: [<080587ba] segv+0x233/0x23d 081f9c8c: [<08058582] segv_handler+0x4f/0x54 081f9cac: [<08067453] sig_handler_common_skas+0xb7/0xd4 081f9cd4: [<08064748] sig_handler+0x34/0x44 081f9cec: [<080648b5] handle_signal+0x4c/0x7a 081f9d0c: [<08066227] hard_handler+0xf/0x14 081f9d1c: [<00776420] 0x776420 The first process (pid = 1) gave me the vm_start without any problems, but when I try to access the second process, the kernel crashes. • running multi threads in Java

My task is to simulate activity of couple of persons. Each of them has few activities to perform in some random time: fast (0-5s), medium(5-10s), slow(10-20s) and very slow(20-30s). Each person performs its task independently in the same time. At the beginning of new task I should print it's random time, start the task and then after time passes show next task's time and start it. I've written run() function that counts time, but now it looks like threads are done one after another and not in the same time or maybe they're just printed in this way. public class People{ public static void main(String[] args){ Task tasksA[]={new Task("washing","fast"), new Task("reading","slow"), new Task("shopping","medium")}; Task tasksM[]={new Task("sleeping zzzzzzzzzz","very slow"), new Task("learning","slow"), new Task(" :** ","slow"), new Task("passing an exam","slow") }; Task tasksJ[]={new Task("listening music","medium"), new Task("doing nothing","slow"), new Task("walking","medium") }; BusyPerson friends[]={ new BusyPerson("Alice",tasksA), new BusyPerson("Mark",tasksM), new BusyPerson("John",tasksJ)}; System.out.println("STARTING....................."); for(BusyPerson f: friends) (new Thread(f)).start(); System.out.println("DONE........................."); } } class Task { private String task; private int time; private Task[]tasks; public Task(String t, String s){ task = t; Speed speed = new Speed(); time = speed.getSpeed(s); } public Task(Task[]tab){ Task[]table=new Task[tab.length]; for(int i=0; i < tab.length; i++){ table[i] = tab[i]; } this.tasks = table; } } class Speed { private static String[]hows = {"fast","medium","slow","very slow"}; private static int[]maxs = {5000, 10000, 20000, 30000}; public Speed(){ } public static int getSpeed( String speedString){ String s = speedString; int up_limit=0; int down_limit=0; int time=0; //get limits of time for(int i=0; i<hows.length; i++){ if(s.equals(hows[i])){ up_limit = maxs[i]; if(i>0){ down_limit = maxs[i-1]; } else{ down_limit = 0; } } } //get random time within the limits Random rand = new Random(); time = rand.nextInt(up_limit) + down_limit; return time; } } class BusyPerson implements Runnable { private String name; private Task[] person_tasks; private BusyPerson[]persons; public BusyPerson(String s, Task[]t){ name = s; person_tasks = t; } public BusyPerson(BusyPerson[]tab){ BusyPerson[]table=new BusyPerson[tab.length]; for(int i=0; i < tab.length; i++){ table[i] = tab[i]; } this.persons = table; } public void run() { int time = 0; double t1=0; for(Task t: person_tasks){ t1 = (double)t.time/1000; System.out.println(name+" is... "+t.task+" "+t.speed+ " ("+t1+" sec)"); while (time == t.time) { try { Thread.sleep(10); } catch(InterruptedException exc) { System.out.println("End of thread."); return; } time = time + 100; } } } } And my output : STARTING..................... DONE......................... Mark is... sleeping zzzzzzzzzz very slow (36.715 sec) Mark is... learning slow (10.117 sec) Mark is... :** slow (29.543 sec) Mark is... passing an exam slow (23.429 sec) Alice is... washing fast (1.209 sec) Alice is... reading slow (23.21 sec) Alice is... shopping medium (11.237 sec) John is... listening music medium (8.263 sec) John is... doing nothing slow (13.576 sec) John is... walking medium (11.322 sec) Whilst it should be like this : STARTING..................... DONE......................... John is... listening music medium (7.05 sec) Alice is... washing fast (3.268 sec) Mark is... sleeping zzzzzzzzzz very slow (23.71 sec) Alice is... reading slow (15.516 sec) John is... doing nothing slow (13.692 sec) Alice is... shopping medium (8.371 sec) Mark is... learning slow (13.904 sec) John is... walking medium (5.172 sec) Mark is... :** slow (12.322 sec) Mark is... passing an exam very slow (27.1 sec)

• Inconsistent get_class_methods vs method_exists when using UTF8 characters in PHP code

- by coma
I have this class in a UTF-8 encoded file called EnUTF8.Class.php: class EnUTF8 { public function ñññ() { return 'ñññ()'; } } and in another UTF-8 encoded file: require_once('EnUTF8.Class.php'); require_once('OneBuggy.Class.php'); $utf8 = new EnUTF8(); //$buggy = new OneBuggy(); echo (method_exists($utf8, 'ñññ')) ? 'ñññ() exists!' : 'ñññ() does not exist...'; echo "\n\n----------------------------------\n\n" print_r(get_class_methods($utf8)); echo "\n----------------------------------\n\n" echo $utf8->ñññ(); that produces the expected result: ñññ() exists! ---------------------------------- Array ( [0] => ñññ ) ---------------------------------- ñññ() but if... require_once('EnUTF8.Class.php'); require_once('OneBuggy.Class.php'); $utf8 = new EnUTF8(); $buggy = new OneBuggy(); echo (method_exists($utf8, 'ñññ')) ? 'ñññ() exists!' : 'ñññ() does not exist...'; echo "\n\n----------------------------------\n\n" print_r(get_class_methods($utf8)); echo "\n----------------------------------\n\n" echo $utf8->ñññ(); then the weirdness appears!!!: ñññ() does not exist! ---------------------------------- Array ( [0] => ñññ ) ---------------------------------- Fatal error: Call to undefined method EnUTF8::ñññ() in /var/www/test.php on line 16 Well, the thing is that OneBuggy.Class.php is UTF-8 encoded too and shares absolutly nothing with EnUTF8.Class.php so... where is the bug? UPDATED: Well, after a long debugging time I found this in OneBuggy.Class.php constructor: setlocale (LC_ALL, "es_ES@euro", "es_ES", "esp"); so I did... //setlocale (LC_ALL, "es_ES@euro", "es_ES", "esp"); and now it works but why?.

• GCC emits extra code for boost::shared_ptr dereference

- by Checkers
I have the following code: #include <boost/shared_ptr.hpp> struct Foo { int a; }; static int A; void func_shared(const boost::shared_ptr<Foo> &foo) { A = foo->a; } void func_raw(Foo * const foo) { A = foo->a; } I thought the compiler would create identical code, but for shared_ptr version an extra seemingly redundant instruction is emitted. Disassembly of section .text: 00000000 <func_raw(Foo*)>: 0: 55 push ebp 1: 89 e5 mov ebp,esp 3: 8b 45 08 mov eax,DWORD PTR [ebp+8] 6: 5d pop ebp 7: 8b 00 mov eax,DWORD PTR [eax] 9: a3 00 00 00 00 mov ds:0x0,eax e: c3 ret f: 90 nop 00000010 <func_shared(boost::shared_ptr<Foo> const&)>: 10: 55 push ebp 11: 89 e5 mov ebp,esp 13: 8b 45 08 mov eax,DWORD PTR [ebp+8] 16: 5d pop ebp 17: 8b 00 mov eax,DWORD PTR [eax] 19: 8b 00 mov eax,DWORD PTR [eax] 1b: a3 00 00 00 00 mov ds:0x0,eax 20: c3 ret I'm just curious, is this necessary, or it is just an optimizer's shortcoming? Compiling with g++ 4.1.2, -O3 -NDEBUG.
