• When starting or log off/on, add'l panels show and some panel applets are duplicated

  After upgrading to 12.04 Gnome Classic amd64,every time I log on a new additional blank panel appears on the top and bottom panels - which I delete every time. In addition, the default panel applets are duplicated in the original panels. Also the panels in the second screen are empty (in addition to the wallpaper being hidden). Update: As suggested by fossfreedomm I created a new user and the same behavior occurred. I increased the height of the panels (2436) and the added panels did not change. If I don't remove the added panels and log off/on I get still another - they accumulate. If I switch user instead of logoff/logon, the add'l panel do not appear.

• I cant get back into Ubuntu after turning off my Acer c710 Chromebook

  I took about 1 hour installing Ubuntu to my Acer chrome book. I turned off my computer and now it boots back into Chrome OS (yes i know its supposed to) Then i went onto the Chrome OS dev terminal thing and put in the code sudo cgpt -i 6 -p 5 -s 1 /dev/sda. Nothing happens it comes up with another Local Host slot. I tried using the Ctrl Alt f2 and ctrl alt f3 but nothing happened. I really need to get back onto Ubuntu. All help is appreciated.

• Turning off the backlight on the console

  I'm using an IBM Thinkpad X21 as a 3G router. It's running a server install of lucid. The laptop has the lid up most of the time. There is no X, just a plain console. The colsole blanks itself, but the LCD backlight is always on. The graphics chip is ATI Technologies Inc Rage Mobility P/M AGP 2x (rev 64). • Shutdown, Restart, Halt issues, not powering off system

  Before any one says search around, I have, to no avail. I can't seem to get it working after trying every fix out there. So basically, when I turn off my laptop it shuts down fine but the last line is "System will now halt" but power never gets cut, I've tried shutdown -P and shutdown -h same result. Then when I try restart it goes through the same process but hangs on "System will now restart" But I can't figure it out, I am running full Ubuntu with no other Operating Systems. Any tips?

  Many times, we come across one-off lectures from famous Computer Scientists. Last year, I came across one by Ms. Barbara Liskov, but I could not go because the University Hall was bit far. Tomorrow, there is one by Dr. Knuth! Now the problem I am facing is, "I don't know much about the material he is going to talk", so I am not sure if I should plan and I fear it will be like going for a "temple". :) What is your advise and general strategy that you have followed whenever you wanted to attend a talk or lecture wherein, it may have been worthwhile if it were an introductory tutorial, but instead you were sitting in an advanced 1 hour lecture by a famous scientist.

• How to completely turn off session saving?

  Hi all, I opened System > Preferences > Startup Application > Options and clicked on Remember currently running Applications. I suppose this makes Ubuntu memorize (save a list on some place in disk) all currently running applications and when you reboot your computer, the OS starts with everything in that list. Now I want to get rid of it. Of course I can close all applications which I do not want to start in startup, and click Remember currently running Applications again, but this doesn't seem to work as expected. For example, Yakuake opens differently if I do that. What I want is to completely turn off session saving. Maybe I can delete the stored information somehow?

• Backlight turns off when launching Braid

  I have Ubuntu 12.10 on Acer Aspire 4736z and I installed Braid. When I have just turned on the computer, login and then launch Braid right away, it works just fine. But when I have already been using the computer for some other tasks like browsing or typing on Open Office after booting up and then decide to play Braid, the backlight turns off and I cannot turn it back on using the screen brightness control buttons. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Braid but it's the same. Please help me. Thanks.

• Knockback enemy based off of direction sprite is facing

  Hey Everyone, Today I am trying to make it so if I hit the enemy then the enemy well be knocked backwards in the direction the sprite is facing. I am rotating the sprite around 360 degrees using a joystick on the screen and wanted to know the best practice or ways to accomplish this. I have come up with a few ideas but none of them make use of the sprites angle he is facing just a check to see if I hit the bottom then move him upward and so forth. I am just stumped on how to apply the sprites angle to the enemies x and y coordinate and move him accordingly. Has anyone tried this and have suggestions or things to look for? Thanks in advance.

• Turn Off Sleep on Seagate GoFlex?

  I bought this 2tb Segate GoFlex this last Black Friday and since then every 15 minutes or so the drive spins down, and then a little while later completely dismounts. Very annoying. From what I understand you could turn this off using the including Windows and Mac only software. This function and what controls it isn't proprietary, right? There has to be something that'll let me set it in Ubuntu... Anyone have any suggestions? Also, I formatted it to EXT4. Hope I didn't screw myself up. :/

• Toshiba laptop overheats and switches off

  Since upgrading to 11.10 from 11.04 my laptop rapidly heats up and eventually turns off by itself (due to the intense heat I presume). This was not happening whilst running 11.04; I opted then to run gnome rather then unity, not sure if this makes a differences. Was hoping to solve this problem as it worries me that this continues to happen. if anyone can help me, or i need to provide more information on my system please provide step by step instructions on how to do this as I am still a beginner to the linux platform.

• Least CPU intensive way of streaming your screen on windows?

  Hello, sometimes I like capturing my screen for others to see. Only thing: I am playing games while I do it. I have tried a few streaming solutions where Windows Media Encoder coupled with my own Windows server appealed to me most, because I can change resolutions, etc. I also tried ustream coupled with the Flash applet and the Adobe Flash Encoder recording a Camtasia source. Camtasia has the disadvantage though that it shows the green-and-black-alternating borders and can not be targeted fullscreen. I like how xfire does it. But it doesn't work with every game, many are simply not supported. A few thoughts about this: Is there a program which captures like Fraps or XFire (based on Direct3D and OpenGL outputs) and exposes the output to a DirectShow source filter? Which brings me to: Is there hardware accelerated capturing directly from the graphics card? Maybe including direct encoding with help from OpenCL? Modern graphic cards decode BluRay content directly for example. I should have a modern enough graphics processor for this to be possible (see below). If using Windows Media Encoder: Which are the least CPU intensive settings? Which codec? Is there a newer codec than Windows Media 9? Is it less CPU intensive? I only have 7, 8 and 9 inside the Encoder Could the performance be massively increased by having a Quad-Core CPU (see below)? Bandwidth is no problem up to 1000 to 1500 kbit/s (I have 2048). My Computer specs: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 4 GB DDR2-800 Ram Ati Radeon HD5770 Using Windows 7 Professional

• Monitor displays at 1024x768; scrolls screen for higher resolutions

  I have a dual monitor setup. Normally, they both display at 1680x1050. They have been setup this way for about a year. I'm using Windows XP Professional 2003 x64 SP2. Today, out of nowhere, one of the monitors kicked back to a lower resolution. I was not playing with any configuration at the time.. in fact all I had done was close a window (maybe a browser). But the thing is that the resolution is still preserved partially by the fact that the screen will scroll when you move the mouse. So it's like looking through a 1024x768 window into a 1680x1050 world. The monitor itself does not appear to be damaged, because I also have it connected to my netbook (via KVM) and higher resolutions work fine. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers to no avail. System restore doesn't help either. I'm unsure of the exact ATI card I'm using.. Device Manager lists it as "Radeon X300/X550/X1050". There is no Catalyst Control Center software installed. I tried to install it, but there doesn't seem to be a way to install it by itself ... it forces you to install another driver, which breaks both of my displays, forcing me to go into safe mode and run system restore again.   OK - I am studying Prism a little because of a "free weekend" offer on Pluralsight. As this is proving too complex for me, I went to the Prism book and looked at the forward, and this is what it said: What comes after “Hello, World?” WPF and Silverlight developers are blessed with an abundance of excellent books... There’s no lack of tutorials on Model-View-ViewModel ... But they stop short of the guidance you need to deliver a non-trivial application in full. Your first screen goes well. You add a second screen and a third. Because you started your solution with the built-in “Navigation Application Template,” adding new screens feels like hanging shirts on a closet rod. You are on a roll. Until the harsh reality of real application requirements sets in. As it happens, your application has 30 screens not three. There’s no room on that closet rod for 30 screens. Some screens are modal pop-ups; you don’t navigate to a pop-up. Screens become interdependent such that user activity in one screen triggers changes that propagate throughout the UI. Some screens are optional; others are visible only to authorized users. Some screens are permanent, while other screens can be opened and closed at will. You discover that navigating back to a previously displayed screen creates a new instance. That’s not what you expected and, to your horror, the prior instance is gone along with the user’s unsaved changes. Now the issue is, I don't relate to this description. I've never been a UI programmer, but same as everyone else I'm using Windows apps such as MS-Office, and web sites such as Amazon, Facebook and StackExchange. And I look at these and I don't see many "so many screens" issues! Indeed, the only applications having many windows I can think of is Visual Studio. Maybe also Visio, a little. But take Word - You have a ribbon and a main window. Or take Facebook: You have those lists on the left (Favorites, Lists, Groups etc.), the status middle, the adds and then the Contacts sidebar. But it's only one page. Of course, I understand that in enterprise scenarios there are dashboad applications where multiple segments of the screen are updated from multiple non-related services. This I dig. But other scenarios? So - What am I missing? What is the "multiple screens" monster Pirsm is supposed to be the silver bullet solution for? Shoud I invest in studying Prism in addition to learning WPF or ASP.NET MVC?

• How can I troubleshoot a "Hardware Malfunction" blue screen?

  My computer has suddenly started crashing to a blue screen with the following text: hardware malfunction call your hardware vendor for support *the system has halted* The crash occurs randomly during normal use. I have thus far always been able to reproduce it by transferring the contents of a large folder... But I'm not sure if this is caused by the file transfer, or simply because the transfer takes long enough for something else to trigger it. A bit about my hardware I have an dual core Intel CPU, and Asus motherboard. Video card is by nVidia, and connects via PCIe. My hard drives are in pairs, and connect via SATA to a RAID controller on the motherboard. They are configured to use a RAID0 configuration. What I've tried so far There is nothing in the Windows Event Log. WhoCrashed was unable to find any crash records. ScanDisk runs to completion (it launches prior to Windows load) and reports no errors. MemTest reports no errors (to 200% coverage). System temperatures are in the range of 40 to 50 degrees Celsius, with video card temperatures in the range of 60 to eighty degrees Celsius. I have stripped the system down to a minimal configuration (hard drive, video card, one memory module, motherboard, CPU, power supply). The problem still occurrs. However, this has allowed me to rule out a few components: It is not the video card because the problem still occurred after replacing the video card another one I had on hand. It is not the hard drive or anything software related because the problem occurred after a fresh installation of Windows on a replacement hard drive. It is not the hard drive cables because I replaced those with new ones and still had the problem. It is not the power supply because the problem still occurred after replacing the power supply with another one I had on hand. It is probably not the memory because I've tried three different memory modules in three different memory slots and was still able to replicate the issue. Is there anything I can do to confirm what's causing the issue? At the moment it seems as though it must be either the motherboard or CPU, but those are both difficult components to replace... In addition, both components are relatively new (two to three years old). I will gladly edit in any additional information I can get my hands on, and/or focus the question as I can find more details...

• Direct2d off-screen rendering and hardware acceleration

  I'm trying to use direct2d to render images off-screen using WindowsAPICodePack. This is easily achieved using WicBitmapRenderTarget but sadly it's not hardware accelerated. So I'm trying this route: Create direct3d device Create texture2d Use texture surface to create render target using CreateDxgiSurfaceRenderTarget Draw some shapes While this renders the image it appears GPU isn't being used at all while CPU is used heavily. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a way to check whether hardware or software rendering is used? • Go Directly to Desktop Mode in Windows 8 on Login (Without Installing Extra Software)

  A lot of people are unhappy with being forced to interact with the new Start Screen in Windows 8 first thing once they have logged into their system. But their is a quick and simple work-around to go directly to Desktop Mode that does not require installing extra software or making changes to your system. The first thing that you will need to do is make sure that the Desktop Tile is in the left uppermost position on the Start Screen as seen here. Once the tile has been moved to that position you will need to restart/reboot your system. Once your system has restarted and you are back at the Login Screen, type in your password but do NOT click on the Arrow Button or tap the Enter Key. Instead of tapping the Enter Key simply press down on it and hold it down until you see the regular desktop. Keep in mind that you may see the Start Screen become visible for just a short moment as it is being bypassed for the desktop.   Occasionally I am surprised to open up my toolbox and find a great tool that I've had for years and never noticed.  The other day I had just such an experience with Windows Server 2008.  A co-worker of mine was squinting to read to screenshots that he had taken using the "Print Screen, paste" method in WordPad and asked me if there was a better tool available at a reasonable cost.  My first instinct was to take a look at CamStudio for him, but I also knew that he had an immediate need to take some more screenshots, so I decided to check and see if the Snipping Tool found in Windows 7 is also available in Windows Server 2008.  I clicked the Start button and typed “snip” into the search bar and while the Snipping Tool did not come up, a Control Panel item labeled “Record steps to reproduce a problem” did. The application behind the Control Panel entry was “Problem Steps Recorder” (PSR.exe) and I have confirmed that it is available in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 but have not checked other platforms.  It presents a pretty minimal and intuitive interface in providing a “Start Record”, “Stop Record”, and “Add Comment” button.  The “Start Record” button shockingly starts recording and, sure enough, the “Stop Record” button stops recording.  The “Add Comment” button prompts for a comment and for you to highlight the area of the screen to which your comment is related.  Once you’re done recording, the tool outputs an MHT file packaged in a ZIP archive.  This file contains a series of screen shots depicting the user’s interactions and giving timestamps and descriptive text (such as “User left click on “Test” in “My Page – Windows Internet Explorer”) as well as the comments they made along the way and some diagnostics about the applications captured. The Problem Steps Recorder looks like a simple solution to the most common of my needs for documentation that can turn “I can’t understand how to make it do what you’re reporting” to “Oh, I see what you’re talking about and will fix it right away”.  I you’re like me and haven’t yet discovered this tool give it a whirl and see for yourself.
