• What metric captures why my OSX machine is so slow during XCode indexing

  My entire machine OSX Lion machine slows down while XCode 4.4 is indexing. The CPU is less than 10% busy, I've got over 500 MB free memory, plenty of disk space, disk IO rate is not high, network activity is not high. Indexing just a few files can take minutes and builds are extremely slow. While this is going on, even loading a new web page in Chrome can be slow. Knowing how to fix it would be great, but more fundamentally how can I measure what is actually going slowly? What metrics should I be looking at? Nothing in Activity Monitor, iostat, top, or sar betray anything about what's going on to me. Even getting a man page is interminable.

• Rotating a view of a chunked 2d tilemap

  I'm working on a top-down (oblique) tile-based engine. I would like for the tiles to have a definable height in the world, with Characters being occluded by them, etc. This has led to a desire to be able to "rotate" the view of the world, even though I'm using all hand-drawn graphics and blitting. Therefor, I need to rotate the actual world itself, or change how the Camera traverses these arrays. How can, or should, I create individual rotations of 90 degrees, when I have multi-dimensional arrays? Is it faster to actually rotate the array, to access it differently, or to create pre-computed accessor(?) arrays, something like how my chunks work? How can I rotate an individual chunk, or set of chunks? • Career paths after web development?

  I know this is open ended, but I'm just curious what you've done after your web development career, or if you've stayed loyal. I have a feeling/read/heard that web development salaries top out at a certain amount.. even after 10-15 years of experience. Reason I ask is that I graduated last summer with a BS in Chemical Engineering.. but have not been able to find a job in California. I've been web designing/developing since high school and thought that I should start a career, even if its not related to my major and not lose more time. Even though I'd really like to have an engineering career, I don't think that will happen. Do you guys have any suggestions or experiences for choices after/ways to enhance your career after several years in web development? Thanks! Update: Thanks for the responses guys! One more question: Is it likely to be accepted into a MS/PhD program if you've been out of uni for a couple years? Or with semi-related job experience? Would I be a bit of a misfit with a BS in ChemE studying CS/CompE for an MS?

• Touchpad hardware button disables keyboard too

  I have an old but nice Samsung X50 running MM which has a key between the touchpad buttons which disables the touchpad. Very nice, no-one like to brush against the touchpad while typing. It seems to be a hardware feature -- a BIOS style window appears at the top left of the screen when you press it saying "touchpad off"; and when you press it again it says "touchpad on", and so it is, but now the keyboard has no effect in X, I can type nothing except to meta-ctl F1 to the console. After a reboot the problem persists; and the only way I have found to fix it is to blow away .gconf are replace it with a copy I made in happier times. Deleting/modifying .gconf/desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/%gconf.xml does not fix the problem. There is no way to turn off the switch in BIOS without losing the touchpad. I would prise the thing out with a screwdriver if I could, but it's a work machine. This button is the bane of my life, hanging over me like a sword of Damocles.

• Social Analytics in your current data

  By now everyone is aware of the massive boom in social-networking (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn) and obviously a big part of its business model revolves around being able to mine this data to create information that can be used to make money for someone. Gartner has identified 'Social Analytics' as one of the top 10 strategic technologies for 2011. Has anyone looked at their existing data structures to determine if they could extract a social graph and then perform further data mining against this? How does it fit in with your other strategic development strategies? What information are you trying to extract from the data? Take for example, a bank. They could conceivably determine a social graph through account relationships and transactions. Obviously there would be open edges on the graph where funds enter/leave the institute, but that shouldn't detract from the usefulness of the data. I'm looking for actual examples with the answers, as well as why/how they did it. References to other sites will be greatly appreciated. Note: I'm not at all referring to mining data out of actual social networks.

• serving static assets via http is really slow compared to sshfs (apache2/nginx)

  After migrating to a new VPS I had some users complaining about slow loading images on their sites. After creating some test files with dd I realized that I can download all files via sshfs with full speed while downloads via web are painfully slow. The larger the file is and the longer the transfer takes, the slower the transfer speed gets. I thought I had some problems with Apache and just spend the whole evening with replacing Apache2 against nginx for static file serving - with no effect at all. No I/O wait states in top. Tons of RAM free, no high CPU utilization and hdparm shows a decent I/O performance at all times. I just have no idea anymore, what's happening on this server. • iptables: matching multiple ip addresses

  Hi guys, I am working on a iptables rule to apply after my shorewall script has initialized my firewall. I want a spicific IP (10.0.1.19) address in my lan to be redirected to 10.0.64.1 except if it is going to paypal. I have the following rule, and that works like a charm iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING ! -d 1.2.3.4 -s 10.0.1.19 -j DNAT --to 10.0.64.1 My problem is that paypal uses multiple ip addresses, and I am not allowed to have multiple IP-addresses. https://ppmts.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/ppdts.cfg/php/enduser/std%5Fadp.php?p%5Ffaqid=92 On top of this problem I would like to know how to remove the rule again, without having to restart shorewall. • Stencyl or flash limitation?

  I have found that Stencyl doesn't seem to be very good at handling very many actors in a game. I had been trying to implement some basic AI at the moment all the behaviours were: wander (pick a random point and move directly to it) and wrap around screen (if it goes off the top of the screen it appears at the bottom). Even with these simple behaviours and calculations the frame rate dropped dramatically when there were more then 50 actors on screen: 10 actors: 60fps 50 actors: 30-50fps 75 actors: ~30fps 100 actors: 15-20fps 200 actors: 8-10fps I had planned on having a maximum of around 200 actors but I see that's no longer an option and implementing a more complicated AI system with flocking behaviour, looking at creating a game in a similar vein to flOw. I understand that a game is perfectly playable at 30fps but this is a super simple test with ultra simple graphics, no animations and no sounds is child's play in terms of calculations to be made. Is this a limitation with Stencyl or is it flash? Should I simply scale the scope of the game down or is there a better game engine that exports to .swf that I should look into?

  In the new Flash Pro CS6 there is an option to generate spriteheet from a symbol. An artist I'm working with created a bunch of assets for a game. One of them is a walking person as seen from a top-down view. When I look for the animation, I do not seem to find it. When I select to create a spritesheet, flash suggest creating a spritesheet with one frame in the base pose and no other (animation) frames. What is causing this and how do I correct it? 2 .I want to convert it to a sprite sheet for 32 angles of movement. Is there any magical easy way to get this done? Is there a workaround without using Flash CS6 to do the same thing?

• Why isn't "(ulimit -d 1000; firefox) &" working?

  I'm trying to limit the memory usage of firefox to prevent it from stalling the whole system with problematic web sites. I tried, in bash: (ulimit -d 1000; firefox) & This should limit the memory usage to 1000kB. Then I opened YouTube, and noticed, in top, that firefox is using 2.6% of the memory, or about 200MB, and not crashing. Clearly the limit is being ignored. Why is that, and how can I enforce it correctly?

  I have a standard MySQL Server running on Red hat 5.7. I have edited /etc/my.cnf to specify the bind address as my server's public IP address. [mysqld] datadir=/var/lib/mysql socket=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock user=mysql # Default to using old password format for compatibility with mysql 3.x # clients (those using the mysqlclient10 compatibility package). old_passwords=1 # Disabling symbolic-links is recommended to prevent assorted security risks ; # to do so, uncomment this line: # symbolic-links=0 [mysqld_safe] log-error=/var/log/mysqld.log pid-file=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid bind-address=171.67.88.25 port=3306 And I have also restarted my firewall sudo /sbin/iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp --destination-port 3306 -j ACCEPT /sbin/service iptables save The network administrator has already opened port 3306 for this box. When connecting from a remote computer (running Ubuntu 10.10, server is running RHEL 5.7), I issue mysql -u jeffrey -p --host=171.67.88.25 --port=3306 --socket=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock but receive a ERROR 2003 (HY000): Can't connect to MySQL server on '171.67.88.25' (113). I've noticed that the socket file /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock is blank. Should this be the case? • Radeon 5850 Why am I not getting 3 monitors up as a choice ??

  Ive just bought the top end ATI Radeon card with 2 normal monitor ports and a HDMI. The idea was to continue using my dual screen setup as always and to use the last plug, the HDMI on my TV. I got a new 52 inch HD TV with all the necessary bits. This should work fine. But.. in Display Properties I still get only my 2 monitors up as options. Not the Digital TV. When I unplug 1 monitor and restart the computer, I get the TV and the other monitor. But never all 3 at the same time. Why is this ? Where can I go to tell it that I need all 3 screens at the same time. Also I get a message saying my gfx card also gives sound through the HDMI cable.. But the TV tells me its recieving a sound format that it does not understand. Any ideas on that too while were at it ?

• Dumping a Linux console scrollback buffer?

  We would like to save the output of a program run on a Linux console which spans many lines. Unfortunately it wasn't logged or run under screen, or any other way that lets us easily capture the output. The best method we've been able to come up with so far is: Log into the machine via a separate SSH session In the console session, page to the top of the buffer Repeat: In the SSH session, run "cat /dev/vcs >> screendump.txt" In the console session, page down one screen Dump the final screen in the SSH session Is there a better way? It seems like if the VC memory were contiguous and you knew where it was you could use dd to pull the console text directly out of kernel memory and into a file.

• ASP.Net MVC: Areas and controllers

  Areas are a great feature of MVC now. The let you put common code into an Area and then its segregated from other code. That makes it really easy to put those common feature in one spot and not have the interfere with other code. So today I was working on a new area and starting to test code in it. But the controller method could not be found. Testing the routes and all of the names proved no help either. So I am banging my head against the wall. Then I took a peak at one of the existing controllers in another Area in the same app. Looked similar, but … There was a Namespaceat the top of that controller with that Area in the Namespace.  I had copied my controller in from somewhere else and therefore it did not have the Namespace there.   I put in the right Namespace and cool, it worked right away. So add that to your list when testing.

• RMS java web framework

  We're currently reconsidering technologies and frameworks to get more agile with "simple" RMS CRUD-based projects. In short, short-living things like this Right now we have custom extension on top of SmartGWT but after some time it has proven not to be enough flexible. I also personally dislike that java-js compilation process and the whole GWT codebase. Not only its ugly designed, it also makes certain low-level js things very complicated if not completely impossible. So what I'm looking for is: closest to web as possible, like JSF or possibly Tapestry, it is very important to be able get "low" and weave framework if necessary. Happens more often than we thought. datagrid capable - Ext.js & PrimeFaces looks pretty good, Vaadin does too. db-schema generators (optional, no matter in which way) If it were only on me, I'd probably stick to Ext.js + custom rest-based java solution, possibly generated from database schema (not sure about concrete tooling yet) I only does have experience with vanilla Ext.js, vanilla GWT and JSF 2.0 / Seam, so it kinda hard for me to judge or even propose other frameworks. What would be your proposition? What are the problems you've faced, what was your solution and how hard do you think it was to deal with them in "big picture"?

  Earlier this week we asked you to share your favorite time tracking tips, tricks, and tools. Now we’re back to highlight the techniques HTG readers use to keep tabs on their time. While more than one of you expressed confusion over the idea of tracking how you spend all your time, many of you were more than happy to share the reasons for and the methods you use to stay on top of your time expenditures. Scott uses a fluid and flexible project management tool: I use kanbanflow.com, with two boards to manage task prioritisation and backlog. One board called ‘Current Work’ has three columns ‘Do Today’, ‘In Progress’ and ‘Done’. The other is called ‘Backlog’, which splits tasks into priority groups – ‘Distractions (NU+NI)’, ‘Goals (NU+I)’, ‘Interruptions (U+NI)’, ‘Interruptions (U+NI)’ and ‘Critical (U+I)’, where U is Urgent and I is Important (and N is Not). At the end of each day, I move things from my Backlog to my ‘Current Work’ board, with the idea to keep complete Goals before they become Critical. That way I can focus on ‘Current Work’ Do Today so I don’t feel overwhelmed and can plan my day. As priorities change or interruptions pop up, it’s just a matter of moving tasks between boards. I have both tabs open in my browser all day – this is probably good for knowledge workers strapped to their desk, not so good for those in meetings all day. In that case, go with the calendar on your phone. While the above description might make it sound really technical, we took the cloud-based app for a spin and found the interface to be very flexible and easy to use. • How to protect Google Ads from yontoo layers runtime?

  Since sometime I have observed that Google Ads on any website including my blog (http://blogs.digitss.com) gets replaced with something similar to uploaded image below. I am sure it's happening with many people and that could reduce google adsense income. After some research I found that it is because "yontoo layers runtime" from http://www.yontoo.com/ (tagline says: Platform that allows you to control the websites you visit everyday.) but actually they are taking over. I am not sure with which software they are making a way into users computer but that seems very bad in terms of freedom of Internet and advt/marketing industry. I don't remember I have ever said "yes" to install yontoo on my computer. This piece of software is successful to install itself on my laptop/desktop and workstation at office. I am going to disable it now but the question is how do I make my websites aware of Yontoo Runtime and stop them from replacing Google Ads? Basically they are not able to replace all adsense ads but so far they are successfully replaced 1st instance of adsense advt and I am sure in future they will hit more. There could be 2 approaches 1) Fool yontoo runtime by putting some misleading divs in html document to save actual ads, 2) Completely disable yontoo by working out some client side script (javascript) which can fail/crash yontoo runtime and so will fail it's purpose of replacing ads. You can visit my blog (http://blogs.digitss.com) and see on top-right corner, if you find that google ad replaced with something similar to image attached with question - it means your computer/browser is infected too. Looking forward to reply from webmasters, if someone has already wrote some code/plugin to make website (and google ads) safe from yontoo or similar runtime. FYI: it was able to push this runtime in all browsers installed on machine. So a dangerous threat. And yes, I am just using Google ads - not sure if yontoo runtime is doing trick against other ad networks or not? I am sure they must be doing it with some handful of ad networks.

• Is it better to hard code data or find an algorithm?

  I've been working on a boardgame that has a hex grid as the board (the upper right grid in the image below) Since the board will never change and the spaces on the board will always be linked to the same other spaces around it, should I just hard code every space with the values that I need? Or should I use various algorithms to calculate links and traversals? To be more specific, my board game is a 4 player game where each player has a 5x5x5x5x5x5 hex grid (again, the upper right grid in th eimage above). The object is to get from the bottom of the grid to the top, with various obstacles in the way, and each players being able to attack eachother from the edge of their grid onto other players based on a range multiplier. Since the players grid will never change and the distance of any arbitrary space from the edge of the grid will always be the same, should I just hard code this number into each of the spaces, or should I still use a breadth first search algorithm when players are attacking? The only con I can think of for hard coding everything is that I'm going to code 9+ 2(5+6+7+8) = 61 individual cells. Is there anything else that I'm missing that I should consider using more complex algorithms?

• C# : When to go Fluent

  In many respects I really like the idea of Fluent interfaces, but with all of the modern features of C# (initializers, lambdas, named parameters) I find myself thinking, "is it worth it?", and "Is this the right pattern to use?". Could anyone give me, if not an accepted practice, at least their own experience or decision matrix for when to use the Fluent pattern? Conclusion: Some good rules of thumb from the answers so far: Fluent interfaces help greatly when you have more actions than setters, since calls benefit more from the context pass-through. Fluent interfaces should be thought of as a layer over top of an api, not the sole means of use. The modern features such as lambdas, initializers, and named parameters, can work hand-in-hand to make a fluent interface even more friendly. ... Edit: Here is an example of what I mean by the modern features making it feel less needed. Take for example a (perhaps poor example) Fluent interface that allows me to create an Employee like: Employees.CreateNew().WithFirstName("Peter") .WihtLastName("Gibbons") .WithManager() .WithFirstName("Bill") .WithLastName("Lumbergh") .WithTitle("Manager") .WithDepartment("Y2K"); Could easily be written with initiallizers like: Employees.Add(new Employee() { FirstName = "Peter", LastName = "Gibbons", Manager = new Employee() { FirstName = "Bill", LastName = "Lumbergh", Title = "Manager", Department = "Y2K" } }); I could also have used named parameters in a constructors in this example.

• A good Linux alternative to Ubuntu for a working environment.

  Hi, Im running a decent laptop with 3GB ram and 2GHz Core Duo. I use it mainly for working which requires several SSH and SFTP connections to servers and running a VM most of the time. Nothing much more intensive than that. I like using Ubuntu 9.10 however I have the issue of Nautilus and the top/bottom menus freezing up on me constantly - dare I say it, alot more problems than when I was using Windows Vista. Im just looking for recommendations of other operating systems which would be suitable for the task. Thanks

• creating TAGS for Ruby and emacs

  I ran the following from my top level Ruby on Rails directory find . -name "*.rb" | etags - Then within emacs I visited that tag file. This works reasonably well to find some of the methods and most of the files, however it is having trouble finding some of the extra methods/classes that I use in my helpers directory. e.g. I have a file in my helpers dir called my_foo_helper.rb If I search my tags for that file, it finds it. However, if I try to find a tag for one of the methods within that module it doesn't find it at all. If I use Aptana or something like that it seems to be able to locate those methods. Any thoughts? Thanks!
