• Compact representation of GUID/UUID?

  I need to generate a GUID and save it via a string representation. The string representation should be as short as possible as it will be used as part of an already-long URL string. Right now, instead of using the normal abcd-efgh-... representation, I use the raw bytes generated and base64-encode them instead, which results in a somewhat shorter string. But is it possible to make it even shorter? I'm OK with losing some degree of uniqueness and keeping a counter, but scanning all existing keys is not an option. Suggestions?

• Problem with Java Mail : No provider for smtp

  Hello all. I am using JavaMail to do a simple application that sends an email when it finds some files in a directory. I managed to get it worked from Eclipse. I Run the application and it sent the email with no errors. But, when I created the jar, and executed it, it fails in the email sending part. Anyway, if it works fine from Eclipse with the original parameters, I guess that the values are correct, but the problem is creating the jar. I don't know very much about the possible results or changes when creating a jar. Could the JavaMail libraries someway go wrong when the jar is created? Do you have any ideas?   So here's my situation. I am working on an editor for a communications channel that works over an RS232 serial ASCII terminal. Let's not go into detail for that ;-) To simplify, I need a textbox on a WPF control that can take in text like "Commit\r\n" (which is the .net string "Commit\r\n") and convert it back to "Commit\r\n" as a .net string. I was hoping for a string.Unescape() and string.Escape() method pair, but it doesn't seem to exist. Am I going to have to write my own? or is there a more simple way to do this?

  Hello, I am wondering if there's an elegant solution for doing this in Java (besides the obvious one - of declaring a different/explicit function. Here is the code: private static HashMap<String, Integer> nameStringIndexMap = new HashMap<String, Integer>(); private static HashMap<Buffer, Integer> nameBufferIndexMap = new HashMap<Buffer, Integer>(); // and a function private static String newName(Object object, HashMap<Object, Integer> nameIndexMap){ .... } The problem is that I cannot pass nameStringIndexMap or nameBufferIndexMap parameters to the function. I don't have an idea about a more elegant solution beside doing another function which explicitly wants a HashMap<String, Integer> or HashMap<Buffer, Integer> parameter. • Rails: keeping DRY with ActiveRecord models that share similar complex attributes

  This seems like it should have a straightforward answer, but after much time on Google and SO I can't find it. It might be a case of missing the right keywords. In my RoR application I have several models that share a specific kind of string attribute that has special validation and other functionality. The closest similar example I can think of is a string that represents a URL. This leads to a lot of duplication in the models (and even more duplication in the unit tests), but I'm not sure how to make it more DRY. I can think of several possible directions... create a plugin along the lines of the "validates_url_format_of" plugin, but that would only make the validations DRY give this special string its own model, but this seems like a very heavy solution create a ruby class for this special string, but how do I get ActiveRecord to associate this class with the model attribute that is a string in the db Number 3 seems the most reasonable, but I can't figure out how to extend ActiveRecord to handle anything other than the base data types. Any pointers? Finally, if there is a way to do this, where in the folder hierarchy would you put the new class that is not a model? Many thanks.

  I have some code grabbing a JSON array from my server and initially storing it as a string. This all works fine until I try and deserialize it using google's gson fromJson method. LogCat spits out the error: 04-08 17:46:35.163: ERROR/dalvikvm(401): Can't shrink stack: curFrame is in reserved area (0x41049000 0x410491c4) My code that causes the error is: String[] results = gson.fromJson(returnString, String[].class); Can anyone shed some light on what I am doing wrong?   I'm currently writing some tests so that I may improve my skills with the Internet interaction through Windows Forms. One of those tests is to find a postal code which should be returned by Canada Post website. My default URL setting is set to: http://www.canadapost.ca/cpotools/apps/fpc/personal/findByCity?execution=e4s1 The required form fields are: streetNumber, streetName, city, province The contentType is "application/x-www-form-enclosed" EDIT: Please consider the value "application/x-www-form-encoded" instead of point 3 value as the contentType. (Thanks EricLaw-MSFT!) The result I get is not the result expected. I get the HTML source code of the page where I could manually enter the information to find the postal code, but not the HTML source code with the found postal code. Any idea of what I'm doing wrong? Shall I consider going the XML way? Is it first of all possible to search on Canada Post anonymously? • Web service using Data Dynamics ActiveReports occasionally slows down

  My company is running into a problem with a web service that is written in C#/ASP.Net. The service receives an identity key for data in SQL Server and a path to generate and save a PDF report for this data. In most cases, this web service returns results to the calling web pages very quickly, usually within a few seconds max. However, it seems to occasionally hit a significant slowdown. The web application calling the web service will generate a timeout error when this slowdown occurs. We have checked and the PDF does get created and saved to the server, so it looks like the web service eventually finishes executing. It seems to take about 1 to 2 minutes for processing to have completed. The PDF is generated using ActiveReports from Data Dynamics. Wwhen this problem occurs, making a small change to the web service's config file (ie, adding a blank space to a connection string line) seems to restart the web service and everything is perfectly ok for a period of time afterwards. Other web applications that are running on the same web server do not seem to experience this type of behavior, only this particular web service. I have added the code for the web service below. It is basic calls to 3rd party libraries. We are not able to recreate this problem in test. I am wondering what might be causing this issue? • Convert.ToDateTime causes FormatException on afternoon date/time values

  We have an application parsing date/time values in the following format: 2009-10-10 09:19:12.124 2009-10-10 12:13:14.852 2009-10-10 13:00:00 2009-10-10 15:23:32.022 One particular server all of the sudden (today) started failing to parse any times 13:00:00 or later. This particular client has five servers and only one has the problem. We have dozens of other clients with a total of hundreds of servers without the problem. System.FormatException: String was not recognized as a valid DateTime. at System.DateTimeParse.Parse(String s, DateTimeFormatInfo dtfi, DateTimeStyles styles) at System.DateTime.Parse(String s, IFormatProvider provider) at System.Convert.ToDateTime(String value, IFormatProvider provider) at System.String.System.IConvertible.ToDateTime(IFormatProvider provider) at System.Convert.ToDateTime(Object value) I ran a test using DateTime.Parse(s, CultureInfo.CurrentCulture) comapred to DateTime.Parse(s, CultureInfo.InvariantCulture) and the problem only shows up with CurrentCulture. However, CurrentCulture is "en-US" just like all the other servers and there's nothing different that I can find in regional or language settings. Has anyone seen this before? Suggestions related to what I can look into? EDIT: Thank you for the answers so far. However, I'm looking for suggestions on what configuration to look into that could have caused this to suddenly change behavior and stop working when it's worked for years and works on hundreds of other servers. I've already changed it for the next version, but I'm looking for a configuration change to fix this in the interim for the current installation.

  I see everywhere constructions like: int? myVar = null; string test = myVar.HasValue ? myVar.Value.ToString() : string.Empty; Why not use simply: string test = myVar.ToString(); Isn't that exactly the same ? At least Reflector says that: public override string ToString() { if (!this.HasValue) { return ""; } return this.value.ToString(); } So, is that correct (the shorter version) or am I missing something?
