  I am now reading Foundations of F# by Robert Pickering and parallelly the book in progress 'Real World Functional Programming' by Tomas Petricek. My question is, what is the added value I would get from buying and reading the following books: 1) Expert F# by Don Syme and others 2) F# for Scientists by John Harrop Are those books still up to date with the current CTP version. What are things to keep notice of with respect to the recent changes in the language? Will there be reprinted updated versions? Also I want to learn more about datamining techniques with F# as a tool for this. What are good books to read next on this topic?

• Which rdfa parser for java that supports currently used rdfa attributes?

  I am building an app in Java using Jena for semantic information scraping. I am looking for a RDFa parser that would allow me to correctly extract all the rdfa statements. Specifically, one that extracts info about namespaces used and presuming that rdfa tags are correct in the page produces correct triples, ones that distinguish between object and data properties. I went through all rdfa parsers from the site http://rdfa.info/wiki/Consume for Java. They all struggle to extract any rdfa statements and if they do not crash, Jena RDFa parser shows plenty of errors and then dies a terrible death, the data is of little use as it is incorrectly processed and generally mixed up. I am newbie in this area so please be gentle:) I was also thinking of using a library written in different language but then again I don't really know how to plug it into Java code. Any suggestions?

  At the beginning PHP was a scripting language. But after the introduction and improvement of OOP I see more and more objects added to the core. They started with SPL which grew a lot, now we have DOMDocument family, DateTime family which should be part of PECL, Pear or Zend Framework or implemented by each one of us. Shouldn't be php only for build-in functions and all these objects passed to something else? Example. DateTime class is part of the core and I see it very similar with Zend_Date.

  I'm not sure that it's not implemented yet, I hope that it is. But I know that in .Net programmers should manually run time-consuming task in the background thread. So every time we handle some UI event and we understand that this will take some time we also understand that this will hang UI thread and our application. And then we make all this Background work things and handle callbacks or whatever. So my question is: Is there in some language/platform a mechanism that will automatically run time-consuming tasks in the background and will do all related work itself? So we just write the code for handling specific UI event and this code will be somehow detected as time-consuming and will be executed in background. And if there isn't, then why?

  At the top of my tex document, I set my sourcecode listing format by \lstset{language=java} \lstset{numbers=left, numberstyle=\tiny, numbersep=5pt, breaklines=true} \lstset{emph={square}, emphstyle=\color{red}, emph={[2]root,base}, emphstyle={[2]\color{blue}}} because I merely list Java source code. At one point in my document, I had to reformat for a single listing by \lstset{commentstyle=\footnotesize\textit} \lstset{basicstyle=\ttfamily\fontsize{11}{12}\selectfont} \lstset{literate= {!=} {$\neq$}{2}} Now I have the problem that my previous Java formatting for listings is destroyed, and I dont know how to reset the lst settings to default. How can this be avoided?

  Hi, im starting a new project and for the first time i want to be cross-platform. But the tricky is my project would involve listen server, cryptos etc., etc. So i was wondering what is the best solution for cross-platform development (OpenSSL, instead of MSCrypto etc.) that would be easy to write with VS2010 (yeah the RC). The language is still not specified (depends on witch we would be easier) but im leaning to Visual C++. In Cross-Platform i mean windows/generic unix compilation.

  Hi everyone, We're working with a new codeigniter based application that are cross referencing different PHP functions forwards and backwards from various libraries, models and such. We're running PHP5 on the server and we try to find a good way for managing errors and status reports that arises from the usage of our functions. While using return in functions, the execution is ended, so nothing more can be sent back. Right? What's the best practice to send a status information or error code upon ending execution of actual function? • Creating/compling .net data class within an application

  Is there a pattern, Xml structure, architecture technique we can use to create simple data holder class code that we can deserialise to/from and do that at runtime? We're in the early design stage of a .Net project and one of our goals is to make the resulting system extensible through configuration without needing a developer. We need to support new sources of data, typcially delivered as Xml messages. Currently we convert/deserialise the messages into simple classes and then use an already existing language which can manipulate those classes as we need. That works well when you have a developer to map the Xml to simple class, create the class and then write the deserialisation, but it's not extensible for for an administrator. Our target user audience is high end DBA and/or network admin - people who can handle Xml but may not know C#.

  Hi, I have a python app engine code (matured backend) - and we are now planning to have a front end for that code. I was wondering whether it is possible to implement GWT as the front end. Even though Alex Martelli in this post [1] mentions it is not possible, a comment to that post suggests that it is indeed possible using rpc over json for GWT. I was unable to understand how this is possible. In app.yaml file, we have to specify the language to be python, right? In that case, how can it compile GWT based on JAVA? Are there any examples on anyone doing that? Can someone help me out? It would be extremely helpful. • Auto-complete/suggestion popup menu in GtkTextView

  I'm trying to create a system that will allow me to respond to the current text and auto-complete/suggest what should come next. For example if the user starts to type "Batm" then the system would respond with a menu showing the full completed word "Batman". Think of an IDE like Eclipse or Visual Studio and you get the idea. I understand how to create a popup menu in Gtk+ but what I don't understand is the following: How do I grab the word that the user is currently typing from a GtkTextView (or SourceView) so that I can do a lookup and offer suggestions? How do I position the menu in such a way that it sits next to the current text item (like it would in an IDE)? If anyone could offer suggestions or even a link to a tutorial or example on how to do this correctly I would be forever grateful. As always thanks for you help! Programming language: C

Our current language is in ASP...but are moving to PHP. Does PHP 5 has its limit with scaling web application? Or, should I have our team invest in picking up JSP?   Hi all, I'm very new to Java programming language so this is probably dumb question but I have to ask it because I can't figure it out on my own. Here is the deal. I want to create method which extracts certain object type from a list. So the method should receive List as argument, meaning list should contain either Object1 or Object2. I've tried like this : public Object1 extractObject(List<?>){ //some pseudo-code ... loop trough list and check if list item is instance of object one return that instance } The problem with declaring method with List<?> as method argument is that I receive compilation error from eclipse Syntax error on token ">", VariableDeclaratorId expected after this token.   Hello, I'm the lead developer/architect wanna-be on a J2EE based system/platform at work that serves both real estate and automotive markets. The systems consists of a set of database back ends, web services and two web clients. The platform ends up serving 3 different products: an internal vehicle inventory system for use by company analysts, an external dealer management system (commercialized product), and a real estate inventory system (commercialized). In other words, it follows a software product lines approach....My question is, I'm having trouble communicating to other technical and some business people how this platform architecture is one system that serves multiple markets (by leveraging some existing assets combined with minor modifications)....Is there a formal modeling language that can simplify communicating this intent? I should note that I haven't read much about software product lines, so I'm not sure if there is actually a standard modeling approach to SPL that i'm not aware of....I'm also interested in knowing if there are special configuration management practices for such systems. thanks,

  I’m looking to create a web page with 6 coupons on it, two per line in a web space of 1275 X 1650. Each coupon space will consist of a different image. The problem is I will be creating 20 such web pages that will have these coupons on them. Now some of the same images will appear in different locations/positions on the various web pages. Is there a way to update the same image that appear in different locations/positions at the same time? And what language is used to complete this? I’ve tried CSS but it don’t think it’s possible. So should I be using JavaScript.
