• Where should i organize my matrices in a 3D Game engine?

  I'm working with a group of people from around the world to create a game engine(and hopefully a game with it) within the next upcoming years. My first task was writing a camera class for the engine to use in order to add cameras to the scene, position and follow points in the scene. The problem i have is with using matrices for transformations in the class, should i keep matrices separate to each class? such as have the model matrix in the model class, camera matrix in the camera class, or have all matrices placed in one class/chuck? I could see pros and cons for each method, but i wanted to hear some input form a more professional standpoint.

• Red Gate join the SSIS custom component club

  I recently noticed that Red Gate have launched themselves into the SSIS component market by releasing a new Data Cleanser component, albeit in beta for now. It seems to be quite a simple component, bringing together several features that you can find elsewhere, but with a suitable level  polish that you’d expect from them. String operations include find and replace with regular expressions, case formatting and trim, all of which are available today in one form or another, but will the RedGate factor appeal to people? Benefits include ease of use, all operations in one place, versus installing a custom component which many organisations do not like. I’m also interested to see where they take this and SSIS products in general, as it almost seems too simple for RedGate, a company I normally associate with more advanced problem solving. Perhaps they are just dipping a toe in the water with a simple component for now?

• Shouldn't we count characters of code and comments instead of lines of code and comments? [closed]

  Counting lines of code and comments is sometimes bogus, since most of what we write may be written in one or more lines, depending column count limitations, screen size, style and so forth. Since the commonly used languages (say C, C++, C# and Java) are free-form, wouldn't it be more clever to count characters instead? Edit: I'm not considering LOC-oriented programming where coders try to artificially match requirements by adding irrelevant comments or using multiple lines where less would be enough (or the opposite). I'm interested in better metrics that would be independent of coding style, to be used by honest programmers.

• How can I configure updates in a CMS like WordPress?

  I have a CMS built in core PHP. Till now, if a new version is released, it is downloaded to client machine in zipped form. And then client has to manually unzip the folder and copy that to required location. Because there is no way to download zip file to required location. I want that CMS should be updated in the background like-WordPress. In other words, I want that new version can replace old version. How can I do this?

  Lately, I've been working a lot in PHP and specifically within the WordPress framework. I'm noticing a lot of code in the form of: if ( 1 == $options['postlink'] ) Where I would have expected to see: if ( $options['postlink'] == 1 ) Is this a convention found in certain languages / frameworks? Is there any reason the former approach is preferable to the latter (from a processing perspective, or a parsing perspective or even a human perspective?) Or is it merely a matter of taste? I have always thought it better when performing a test, that the variable item being tested against some constant is on the left. It seems to map better to the way we would ask the question in natural language: "if the cake is chocolate" rather than "if chocolate is the cake".

For example, currently I'm creating a project for a couple of schools here in Bolivia, this is how I organized it: TutoMentor (Solution) TutoMentor.UI (Winforms project) TutoMentor.Data (Class library project) How exactly do you organize your project? Do you have an example of something you organized and are proud of? Can you share a screenshot of the Solution pane? In the UI area of my application, I'm having trouble deciding on a good schema to organize different forms and where they belong. Edit: What about organizing different forms in the .UI project? Where/how should I group different form? Putting them all in root level of the project is a bad idea.

  I would like to know the idea behind the working of 'docking' in applications. I have worked with applications where components from individual forms are docked on a single main form to provide the necessary GUI. But I don't have any idea whats happening in the background. According to Wikipedia A dock is a graphical user interface element that typically provides the user with a way of launching, switching between, and monitoring running programs or applications. Now I am a bit confused if it is some component or an event or a property or something else. EDIT : The applications was developed in Delphi on windows platform. There is something more in Delphi (manual dock and automatic dock).

• Google Maps API: Premier License or excess map loads?

  I am currently looking for a way on how to deal with the Google Maps API usage limits. I am planning a redesign of our page that will probably get around 2 million map loads per month. This will surely break the usage limit of 750000 map loads per month available in the free version. If we pay for excess map loads, this means we would have to pay 5000$ per month. The other option would be to use a Premier license, however there is very few information available on the usage limits for this and the price. I have filled the request form to get a custom offer from Google, but I did not get any response yet. Can anyone of the Premier license holders tell me which option will be cheaper for my usage pattern, paying for Premier license or paying for excess map loads?

• Can I minify Javascript that requires copyright notice?

  I guess this is actually a legal question, but it relates to software. I'm about to include a JS plugin in a project. The comments include: Redistributions of source code must retain the above copyright notice, this list of conditions and the following disclaimer. * Redistributions in binary form must reproduce the above copyright notice, this list of conditions and the following disclaimer in the documentation and/or other materials provided with the distribution. Is using this in my web site "redistribution?" If I minify this to conserve bandwidth, I assume it will strip all comments. If the answer to #1 is yes, doesn't that imply I'm legally not allowed to minify it? (That would stink, since I was planning to auto-minify all JS as part of the deploy process.)

• Display current layout (language code/country flag) in keyboard indicator

  Just upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10, and the keyboard indicator applet no longer displays the two-letter country code for the active layout. This is terrible. Is this the default behaviour? Anyone using two layouts can't tell which language they're in. I can't seem to find the setting for this, it used to be in the preferences for keyboard layout. Update 1: In case this wasn't obvious - I have two keyboard layouts - English and Hebrew. I just upgraded form 10.04, where the country code (USA/IL) was displayed, overlaid on the flag. Now all I get is a vague keyboard icon, and can't find the settings for this. Update 2: this seems to be a bug that people have been reporting since Lucid, and is now back in Maverick

• Java to PHP job change [closed]

  I've been working with java my entire career(8 years), web servers mostly. And there is a possibility for me to start working in environment that is generally PHP based. I've never worked with PHP before except that I wrote a simple send mail html form once or twice. Is there any benefit in learning a PHP stack or this will be a complete waste of time and degradation as a developer? No offense, but I've heard terrible things about that language and I'm afraid that if people see it in my resume later that would scare them off.

I am wondering if it is doable using mdadm; and if so, please kindly point some reference on how to carry out the following steps. For RAID 10, there are four disks used. (1 2)(3 4) The idea is to work on 1 and 3 while keeping 2 and 4 as backup. 1: break RAID 10 into two arrays of RAID 0 => (1 3) (2 4) (how to?) 2: re-partition and format (1 3) 3: copy data from (2 4) to (1 3) 4: re-partition and format (2 4) exactly as (1 3) 5: join (2 4) with (1 3) to form RAID 10 (how to?)   Key Performance Indicators are typically displayed in a scorecard with stop light indicators, which are either red, amber or green light icons. The limitation for these kind of indicators is that you can see the actual and target values in two different fields as well as see the status of the KPI in red, amber or green color. If the user wants to figure out the thresholds associated with the KPI, these values are generally not visible. Further, representing the threshold values in the scorecard itself defeats the purpose of the scorecard. The scorecard should display the KPI's status in the most summarized form and use a minimal amount of space on the dashboard. In this tip we would look at how to address this issue.

• Using paypal to process credit cards in Sweden through an API [on hold]

  I'm looking for a Paypal API that lets me process credit cards to make payments without being redirected to a paypal site and without enforcing consumers to use their paypal account. And it needs to work in Sweden. The ones I've looked at (dodirectpayment, expresscheckout, paypalpro gateway) and none of them have let me process credit cards in Sweden via an API that doesn't force the user to visit the paypal login site. I have a form on my webpage that the user types their credit card number, ccv2, expiration, name, address, etc. I need an API that works in Sweden that simply processes the request, and it has to be without the step of being redirected into a paypal website. The ones that I have found only worked in a select few countries, is there an international solution? I've already spent over 12 work hours just looking for an API that meets my requirements.

• Store VOD wmi data in a database directly or use CQRS?

  I need to collect Video on demand bandwidth usage every few minutes (or maybe ever few seconds) and store this in a database so users can produce graphs on bandwidth usage over a period of time (few hours, days, weeks or even possibly months). So the sort of data that will be stored will be the number of users watching videos, current server bandwidth (Mb/s), multicast bit rate etc. I am wondering whether using CQRS would be a good approach with Event sourcing as I can then rebuild my objects to create different projections (I.e. different graphs/reports etc) but then again it seems like I am introducing complexity which might not be needed. Or would it be best to just put the data directly in a database (currently using PostGres) directly and query off that? Having thought about it, my table is a form of audit log anyway, so I don't think I need event sourcing at all. Any thoughts?

  E-Business Suite 11.5.10 Sustaining Support Exception & 12.1 Extended Support Now to Dec. 2018 [ID 1495337.1] As part of Oracle’s continued commitment to our customers, we will be providing an exception for the first 13 months of Sustaining Support on Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11.5.10 (11i10), valid from December 1, 2013 – December 31, 2014. This exception support will be comprised of three components: (1) new fixes for Severity 1 production issues, (2) United States Form 1099 2013 year-end updates, and (3) payroll regulatory updates for the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and Australia for fiscal years ending in 2014.  In addition, the Extended Support period for E-Business Suite Release 12.1 has been extended through December, 2018. Customers with an active Oracle Premier Support for Software contract will automatically be entitled to Extended Support deliverables for E-Business Suite 12.1. Please refer to the Lifetime Support section of oracle.com for further information regarding Oracle's Lifetime Support Policy for Applications.   Recently, I've been working on the core of my engine, and as I'm moving forward I find myself developing throwaway code to read files and simple data into the engine. This got me thinking about how I should implement a file management system. After a bit of googleing I came across the Unreal Package format, and boy does it look like the perfect one. I think it's good because the way how it allows you to separate different assets into different packages and allow something like a level to reference the different packages. I was just wondering, is this possible with C#? Because the built-in serialization API in .NET does not seem to support any form of this, only reading and writing to a single file.

  Concatenating output from a SELECT statement is a pretty basic thing to do in SQL. The main ways to perform this would be to use either the CONCAT() function, the || operator or the + operator. It really all depends on which version of SQL you are using. The following examples use T-SQL (MS SQL Server 2005) so it uses the + operator but other SQL versions have similar syntax.   What alternatives exist of how an agent can follow the path calculated by a path-finding algorithm? I've seen that the most easy form is go to one point and when the agent has reached this point, discard it and go to the next point. I think that this approach has problems when the game has physics with dynamic objects that can block the travel between point A and point B, then the agent is taken from his original trayectory and sometimes go to the last destiny point is not the most natural behavior. In the literature always I have read that the path is only a suggestion of where the agent has to go, but I don't know how this suggested path must be followed. Thanks.
