• Painless way of consolidating files across multiple machines/OSes

  Just bought a NAS. So I thought I'd get all our photos, media files and pdfs consolidated, de-duplicated, de-junked and virus-checked and stick them all on it. We have 3 laptops, one running Windows, the others OSX. We have a file server running Windows - it was the result of an earlier attempt at a networked fileserver - and a Mac Pro that is also kind of a server (previous attempts at this job have resulted in most of our stuff being on it). Also memory cards/sticks, cd backups and so on. I would be grateful if anyone could suggest a strategy or, ideally, tool(s) I could use to solve this problem. It is probably no more than one or two terabytes of data in total, but I can imagine that going through it all manually, file-by-file may well drive me insane.

• What type of wireless adapter for Verizon Fios?

  I have verizon fios internet service. I believe they use a Wireless G router, but I just have one question. I currently am using a 54mbps wireless pci adapter in my Windows 7 custom build. It drops the internet connection all the time and is starting to get very irritating. I'm thinking about buying a new one, but all the 300mbps cards on newegg are wireless n. So my question is, will a wireless n network adapter make a difference with a wireless g router?

• Will this RAM work well in an iMac?

  I want to increase the RAM of my 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 24" iMac. I currently have 1GB of RAM DDR2 SDRAM 667 MHz. I really want to upgrade, but know nothing about RAM or hardware in general... • Any way to stop VMWare workstation from dropping SSH connections?

  I have VMWare workstation 8 with a few Linux guests. I have had problems maintaining an active SSH connection to my VMs when they are in bridged mode. I first read that the onboard realtek network cards were not well supported so I bought a Intel Pro/1000 GT card. This supposedly had support. But this made no difference. Connections via SSH are active for about the first 3 minutes then hang and die. I have changed the TCP Checksum offload on the Intel and Realtek NICs, but this only works some of the time and even then not for very long. The best I could do was about 20 minutes before the connection was dropped. Any ideas?

• DVI-D Splitter Not Working with GeForce 8400gs

  I have a GeForce 8400gs and it has a DVI and VGA port on the back. I was using dual monitors with one VGA and one DVI cable. I wanted both displays to be digital so I bought a DVI-D splitter and put one DVI cable in each monitor, connected them to the splitter and put the single merged connection in the back of the cards DVI connection. It will not recognize the second monitor (I'm not even sure how it determined which one was the first monitor). The tech specs state that it supports "Two dual-link DVI outputs for digital flat panel display resolutions up to 2560x1600" http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_8400_tech_specs.html. Do I need a different converter or is my only option for dual monitors with this card one VGA, one DVI?

• Why the different coarse threaded screws?

  I'm seeing more and more of these screws (pictured below), which are almost triangular. I find I can only put them into Power Supplies and PCI(e) cards in cases, but they will break/strip away if I put them into a hard drive or a standoff for a motherboard Notice the triangular shape on it? On the Root Access chat, I started asking, but no concrete answer yet. I don't assume it's a production flaw, as I've seen hundreds and replaced them with the "proper" round screws. It is coarse-threaded, not fine-threaded (i.e. for a DVD drive or floppy drive). What are they for, and why do we need them instead of the regular round ones?

• Is there any way I can use two monitors in the console in Linux?

  I have recently become the proud owner of two monitors in my workspace. (Ok not owner, but you know what I mean) and I'd like to use both of them at once. Problem is, I much much prefer to use a Linux Server console over a desktop environment. The graphics card on the machine is a GTX295 (don't ask why, it's a long story.) so I essentially have two graphics cards. Each has a DVI output. Is there any way I can get the console to stretch across two screens? Or will I have to install a desktop Ubuntu for this to work?

• Is the cooling fan on a 2004 graphics card really necessary?

  I have an old GeForce 6600 card in my computer, circa 2004. Recently the fan has started playing up and making loud irritating noises. I've tried oiling it with no luck. This is the second fan I've put on the card, the stock one broke ages ago. Is a card this old really likely to need a cooling fan or can I remove it altogether? It has a decent heatsink on the chip but there's not a lot of airflow in that part of the box. Edit: I should add that I seem to remember most mid range graphics cards at the time I bought that didn't have fans (pretty sure they had heatsinks only), which is why I'm wondering.

• Would hybrid drive work after SSD failure

  Hybrid hard drive combines SSD with traditional hard drives. I know that SSD can fail much often than traditional hard drives. So I want to ask that, when the SSD part of the hybrid drive fails, would I still be able to use the traditional hard drive? If it won't work like that, then I will consider add-in SATA cards instead, as it delegates risk much better. EDIT: I guess it differs from model to model, so if yes what models would work. (I am evaluating Seagate DX for now)

• Multiple SMTP servers in Thunderbird3

  Situation: 2 mail accounts - each with its own pop3 and smtp servers, accesed normally. Except, when using Vodafone mobile network (you know, those usb or pcmcia cards ...) in which case mails are send using Vodafone's SMTP server. I configured both accounts in thunderbird for their default servers, and then added under multiple identities, another called Name of User (mobile) for each account. And it works. Except, I don't like the fact that when I send mail using mobile smtp server it sends them under Name of User (mobile) <-- the mobile part being important. I could of course, delete that part, but then when sending mail, I'd have no way of differenting between the two. They'd both look as Name of User email@address_of_user.com. So, what would be the easiest way to solve this ? It is not a major problem, but it is annoying.

• Windows VPN - NO internet access

  I host a network of servers behind a Fortigate 200a firewall in the DC. I connect to those servers via a VPN connection. The problem is that when i connect to the VPN, I lose my internet connection on the local PC (windows 7). I would like to be connected to the VPN and still surf the web. i guess this means to only forward a range of ip to the VPN connection. I've read other answers on serverfault, talking about "un-check the 'Use default gateway on remote network' option in your Windows 7 PPTP network connection settings". When i do that , i get internet access but no access to the servers in the VPN. Any idea how to get both working? Should i change something on the fortigate 200a config? Do i need two networks cards? Is there a place in windows to define ip range for the vpn connection?

But when I try to install CUDA's developer driver for my GPU I get this error: "This graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware". • Windows 7: from Geforce 8800 to three monitors?

  I've got a GeForce 8800 that I've quite happy with. It drives my two 23" widescreen displays well. Now I've got a 19" standard display that I want to stick between the two widescreens. My second PCIe 16x slot is unused (as is the PCI slot below that), and I want to add a card to my Win7 x64 system. This 19" display won't be used for gaming, so I don't need anything fancy. Here are two cards I was considering, but I'm wondering if they're bad choices for some reason? If they're both fine choices, which is better and why? Again, I'm needing to power only the 19" standard display with this card, and it won't play games. I just need 1280x1024 in Win7 x64.   I'm looking for the proper name for a web service that responds with text as opposed to XML. As an example this "cardServer" service will return 5 cards for a poker hand. http://hostname:8080/cardServer/deal/Game=Poker&Qty=5 The result could look like this: Card1=Ad Card2=Kc Card3=Ts Card4=5d Card5=3d The real world example is not as trivial, but the concept is the same. Parameters if any are passed as POST variables. We currently parse the response into a string list and use the values. The process works just fine. What I'm wondering if this service method has a name that has easier tools to deal with the responses and therefore did we reinvent the wheel? For the record the service was provided and maintained by a customer.

• Latest XP Drivers for Intel Integrated Graphics

  On the Intel site I'm struggling to find what the latest driver version is for certain chipsets. From a system info tool I have several PCs (laptops) with the following reported graphics: Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family Intel(R) Q35 Express Chipset Family Intel(R) Q45/Q43 Express Chipset All use the same driver igxprd32.dll at version 6.14.0010.4xxx (last 3 digits vary). All PCs are XP 32 bit. I am not certain but I think these are all using the same basic chipset. More than likely the drivers were never updated so I wondered what version might be relevant. Any help on tracking down the latest driver version (I just need the number, so I can see how out of date they are) and figuring out which chips these cards are would be great.

• Cisco 2900 series router - 3x 3g HWIC - Can you use the same subnet for each HWIC?

  We host a site with a 2900 series router with 3x 3G-HWIC cards installed. It is hosted with telstra and plugs into our corporate WAN. The card authenticates against radius and advertises a route into the WAN for which subnet it routes for. We have always used the same advertised subnet on each. Telstra have advised us that this could be the cause of some drop out issues whereby some services will work for some people and not for others and are saying effectively that their system will only use one of these at a time even though we can see the interface is online and assigned a WAN IP address. Has anyone out there configured a multi HWIC setup before and if so are they using different subnets for each or the same?

• Detecting hardware and installing drivers in Windows XP

  I have on my desk a computer that I am reinstalling. I have just completed the Windows XP install , which is professional service pack 3. I have also installed an AV package. Now it is time to install the audio and display drivers. Windows Update does not detect the Display card, and neither the audio device. I really have no idea what devices are present in this system, and I am thinking of opening the case, and reading some IDs from the cards themselves. Before I do this, is there not some kind of tool that can automatically detect hardware and install drivers automatically. If not then at least tell me what devices are present, with some real descriptions, so I can search for drivers.

We're shooting for an AutoCAD/SolidWorks/YouTube 1080p capable environment. I can't see how such a small and low profile card could possibly have the horsepower to handle such GPU computations for a big environment like that. We're going to have up to 64 VDIs per server, and are a 500-1000 employee count sized company. Someone enlighten me please! Determining which route to go (between RemoteFX and VMware View/PCoIP) and the hardware (NVIDIA 4GB non-Quadro/Tesla GPUs vs Teradici card). Servers have three 4x, three 8x, and one 16x PCI-E lane. Two of the 8x lanes will be occupied by SAS RAID cards.

  I have an windows 7 laptop and I have installed openvpn 2.2x as client. The laptop has 2 ethernet cards, one of them is wireless. The wireless lan is 192.168.1.0/24 The Fix lan is 192.168.2.0/24 If I connect to the openvpn server useing the Fix lan the I can connect properly and for testing I ping to my openvpn server 10.0.0.1 that answers correctly. But if I connect to the openvpn server useing the wireless lan, I can establish the connection but pinging to the server isn´t possible. The packets goes allways lost. Why can this happen? In an other laptop where windows xp is installed and with the same lan configuratio everything works propperly. In both cases the firewall is configured to access the vnc server and the server directories useing samba. With the XP I have no problems. I will thank you for all help Ignacio

• Is there a suitable chain for iptables when eth is in Promisc mode?

  I have a fron-end machine. Machine have2 eth cards. I want to use netfilter queue to do some checks on the packets. I set eth like this: ifconfig eth0 0.0.0.0 promisc up ifconfig eth1 0.0.0.0 promisc up I want to have an iptable rule like this(only example): iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -j LOG --log-prefix " eth0 packet " but the packet is no passed through the iptables ,because it dosnt target to this MAC. Promisc mode didnt help. I saw that there is a way to add iptables chain for PROMISC, but need compilation... Is there any simplier way to have iptables rule when packet is not target to this eth. Currently i bypass this by creating a bridge between 2 eth and put rule on the FORWARD, but i done want to create bridge.

• Computer refuses to POST

  Computer refuses to POST. What it will do is the fan spins up, and the lights come on on the motherboard, but other then that it just sits there and laughs in my face! Here is what I have done... I have tried 2 different video cards, both known to work, 4 different sticks of RAM in all four ram slots, 2 processors (known to work), and 2 power supplies (known to work). The only constant is the motherboard... The Motherboard is a Asus m3a3-mvp deluxe. Anyone have any other ideas? Also, I have bread boarded it to make sure there where no shorts (taken everything out of the case and tried again).

• Overheating on Ubuntu 12.04

  I have a Dell Inspiron Q17R with two graphic cards and I noticed that it is overheating. I installed Bumblebee, Jupiter and Flashblock, and I followed this guide as well, but it still got up to 74C. Is there anything more I can do? It still doesn't really seem to be working well and the fan keeps spinning really fast. After performing the following test: sensors in the terminal, this is what I got: Adapter: Virtual device temp1: +75.0°C (crit = +100.0°C) temp2: +75.0°C (crit = +100.0°C) coretemp-isa-0000 Adapter: ISA adapter Physical id 0: +68.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) Core 0: +68.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) Core 1: +65.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) it doesn't look good.

  We use StoneEdge Order Manager, which runs under Microsoft Access, on several Windows computers as well as through Terminal Services on Windows Server 2008. Terminal Services users are unable to process credit cards using the First Data Global Gateway on the server. We have followed the necessary setup instructions provided under the user account, which involves adding a certificate in the Internet Options control panel. The Windows XP desktops require this to be done, or a generic 'unable to connect' message is shown when attempting to charge a card. On the server, this message is shown regardless of whether the certificate has been installed.   Which of the two methods of dta transfer trasfers data at a faster rate for smartphones and tablets? Standard WIFI, or MicroSD Cards? I wonder if it would be actually faster to access data on external storage then it would be to have the MicroSD card in my smartphone or tablet. Currently I have a class 10 32GB MicroSD card in my cell phone. I am looking to get the new Google Nexus tablet but it does not offer expandable internal storage. I wonder if that's really a detriment; because if WIFI is faster than MicroSD, then it would matter almost none at all that you couldn't expand the storage internally. If the case is that WIFI is faster, and people caught onto this, then people could save a lot of money on lower memory ipads/iphones/ipods, tablets, and smartphones!
