• Web app - Biometric system connection

  Hi, I will be developing an application for a club where they will have visitors use biometric systems(finger print) or magnetic cards to mark their attendance. This application is planned as a web app, made using PHP/MySQL/Javascript. It does a lot of other things as well. What I wanted to find out is how is the interface between Biometric/Megnetic Card systems to a web app done? I've never worked on this and am hoping if someone who has experience with this can throw some light on this as to how this could be accomplished. Any pointers will be appreciated. (I'm afraid there's got to be some form of application installed on a pc that would interface with the hardware and probably makes calls to the web app. But, if there was a way to connect it to the web app directly, then the app would be easy to deploy to any location with minimal installation.)   I'm good at programming yet I feel like I don't know enough about the architecture of the hardware I'm working on. What does the Northbridge on the mainboard do? What does the L2 cache of my processor do? Can Windows XP use multiple processors? Not in terms of concrete multitasking in all programs but using the capacity of all cores if needed instead of always only one core. How can my processor/mainboard interact with multiple kinds of graphics/sound cards?

• Stopping pirates

  Okay, what do I do to stop pirates? Obviously a callhome to internet service. We are considering making some major aspects be dependent on a web service of some sort. Memory offsets and cracking. If I like rand randomly to allocate empty memory on the heap, would this throw off the crackers? I hacked some memory shit for EverQuest back in the dizzay but don't really know much about this. Registry on windows, etc., I know theres ways to identify the computer. That's easily spoofed with hex editor, but if I jumble up the strings in the program would that help? I need to know that + real ideas. I want the serials of their sound cards. Any other ideas?

• Repeating a List in Scala

  I am a Scala noob. I have decided to write a spider solitaire solver as a first exercise to learn the language and functional programming in general. I would like to generate a randomly shuffled deck of cards containing 1, 2, or 4 suits. Here is what I came up with: val numberOfSuits = 1 (List["clubs", "diamonds", "hearts", "spades"].take(numberOfSuits) * 4).take(4) which should return List["clubs", "clubs", "clubs", "clubs"] List["clubs", "diamonds", "clubs", "diamonds"] List["clubs", "diamonds", "hearts", "spades"] depending on the value of numberOfSuits, except there is no List "multiply" operation that I can find. Did I miss it? Is there a better way to generate the complete deck before shuffling? BTW, I plan on using an Enumeration for the suits, but it was easier to type my question with strings. I will take the List generated above and using a for comprehension, iterate over the suits and a similar List of card "ranks" to generate a complete deck.

• Conditionally embed ASP.NET MVC2 Views as resources during build in Visual Studio 2010

  I have a ASP.NET MVC2 project in VS2010 that can be deployed in two modes: standalone or plugin. In standalone mode, the views should live outside the compiled assembly as .aspx files (the default setup). In plugin mode, the views are switched (currently by hand) to embedded resources and the entire assembly is dropped into a host project folder. Currently, this requires the developer to go through each view and switch it from Build Action: "Content" to "Embedded Resource" and vice versa. I would like to create a new solution configuration to automatically grab all .aspx files and build them as resources. This SO post seems like the solution, but I would prefer not to have to edit the .csproj every single time I add a new view to the project. Is there a way to use a wild cards or some other batch/global conditionally statement to change resources from content to embedded?

• How can I retrieve monitor information?

  I am trying to retrieve the monitor ID's as shown in the Windows display properties (#1, 2... etc), but I can't seem to find a way. I have tried using EnumDisplayMonitors as well as EnumDisplayDevices. They both return something like "\.\DISPLAY1". However, this number doesn't always match the number shown by Windows, especially when 2 video cards are being used to drive 3 or more monitors. Is there an API call I am missing to retrieve this information, or is there a way to get it from the registry or somewhere else? Thanks! I have tried these methods: Win32: EnumDisplayMonitors, EnumDisplayDevices: Neither of these return monitors that aren't active, and neither one returns the correct IDs. WMI: "select * from Win32_DesktopMonitor" doesn't return all the monitors, and there is no ID. Registry: I have found the monitors in various locations, none of the places I found have the info I am looking for. Any help is much appreciated. :)

• Django remove list_editable on a per row basis.

  On the back of Django 1.2RC1, I have built a great administrator for my client! It's awesome. The client has one request that, if not satisfied, could bring this house of cards crashing down. I have a list of swim meet results. A meet result is added by a superuser. A team rep can edit a meet result (which they must be able to do inline, with list_editable), but after they edit the meet result inline and save, they should no longer be able to edit that result inline. They can only perform one edit. So, my question ... can I turn off list_editable on a per row basis?

• Problems with IRQs when connecting two digium card in and asterisk box

  I have two Digium Wildcard TDM800P with 8 FXO ports each. When I connect both at the same time IRQ misses start showing up making my computer unresponsive and unusable. One card works fine but I need all 16 FXO ports to work to receive calls from my Telco. Is there a way for the cards to communicate with each other so they don't generate as many interrupts. Or a way to tweak Linux to dedicate separate IRQ's for each card. I have tried disabling Audio, ACPI and USB ports. Still too many IRQ misses.

• OpenGL - lighting of vertices outside clip range

  I have a problem with lighting in my OpenGL application. When one of the vertices of a drawn polygon goes outside the front clip plane (or has z<0, I'm not sure which), the polygon stops being lighted properly. This however happens on only one machine I tested, with Intel GMA950 card. On nVidia and ATI cards everything looks fine. I guess I am breaking some OpenGL rule here? How should I deal with it? I'd try dividing the scene into smaller polygons, but I'm not sure if it guarantees the case is eliminated (all polygons stepping outside the clipping range are offscreen).

• To be a lazy developer or not to be a lazy developer?

  Am I a lazy developer? Is it being lazy to use automated tools, such as code generators and such? Now, I could, if I had to, create all the data layers and entities I needed, but I choose to use CodeSmith to generate my datalayers and entities. I also use Resharper and I would say it fights with MSDeploy as to which gets installed first after Visual Studio. Again if I had to, I could code without it, but prefer not to. Both these tools from my point of view are no brainers as they improve output massively. But is this lazy? I'm sure there are purists out there that would say everything should be wirtten by you so you know what everything is doing, but if you can read through the code and see what is happening is that ok? So am I being lazy or am I just using all the cards in my hand?

The hand is represented by an integer (32 bits == 32 cards): create table pref_hand ( id varchar(32) references pref_users, hand integer not NULL check (hand > 0), stamp timestamp default current_timestamp ); As the players are playing constantly and that data isn't important (just a gimmick to be displayed at player profile pages) and I don't want my database to grow too quickly, I'd like to keep only up to 10 records per player id. So I'm trying to declare this PL/PgSQL procedure: create or replace function pref_update_game(_id varchar, _hand integer) returns void as $BODY$ begin delete from pref_hand offset 10 where id=_id order by stamp; insert into pref_hand (id, hand) values (_id, _hand); end; $BODY$ language plpgsql; but unfortunately this fails with: ERROR: syntax error at or near "offset" because delete doesn't support offset.   Hi everyone, I want to make a C# app in Mono as it's the only programming language I'm mostly comfortable with. Anyway, ATI Drivers on Linux do not have a Fan control feature and therefore the cards to tend to heat up. For me I prefer to have a cooler card.   My client has a running web application which has been online for more than a year. Recently the client has introduced smart cards for his employees. Because of the difficulty in integrating smart card with its api on a web interface(i will post another detailed question on this later) we are planning to have desktop interface for this. There are 10-20 terminals which will use the desktop interface. 3 approaches for doing this that I have considered : Direct connection and operations on DB-Not using this because of data integrity and consistency issues. • Tomcat startup fails with not a valid identifier

  I have tomcat 6.0.18 running on one server without a problem. With the exact same settings it fails to launch on my colleague's machine. He's even running from the same folder as me (I've stopped my copy while he tries to make it work) All we get when we fire off tomcat using bin/startup.sh is this: CATALINA_OPTS=-server -Xms768m -XX:+UseParallelGC -Xmx768m -XX:MaxPermSize=256m -XX:PermSize=128m -Djava.awt.headless=true: is not an identifier I had that definition in setenv.sh and moved it into startup.sh - same problem. Any suggestions? My brief look on google seem to indicate multiple IP address issues, but my server has two ethernet cards, and two IP addresses. Thanks.

What I would like to do is adding the sprites but like an image, what's behind isn't stored. • Payment Gateways for Mid-Sized Business?

  My company is a bit unhappy with the support we've been getting from Cybersource and we're about to embark on a billing re-write so we're taking the opportunity to look at other gateways. Anyone have any positive or negative experiences they'd like to share? I'd rather not hear about small website gateways like paypal, we run tens of thousands of transactions and millions a year. If you know, I'd love to hear how much you're paying in transaction/gateway fees too. We're primarily a .NET shop if you'd like to speak to a particular API. Gateway must support the big 4 credit cards (mc, visa, disc, amex) and ACH. Thanks in advance for the help from the hive mind. :)

  Hi, I am comparing my cable TV wire to my network wire. In a TV cable wire, different frequencies are used by different TV channels. And since a certain channel use a fixed frequency, I think the only left way to represent different signal is with the carrier wave's amplitude. But what about the network wire? For all the network card with the same type, do they also use different frequencies to send signals just like TV cable? I vaguely remember that they use frequency adjustment to represent signals. So the frequency should not be a fixed one. So how did all the network cards that sharing the same medium differentiate their own signal from others?

• Can I program Nvidia's CUDA using only Python or do I have to learn C?

  I guess the question speaks for itself. I'm interested in doing some serious computations but am not a programmer by trade. I can string enough python together to get done what I want. But can I write a program in python and have the GPU execute it using CUDA? Or do I have to use some mix of python and C? The examples on Klockner's (sp) "pyCUDA" webpage had a mix of both python and C, so I'm not sure what the answer is. If anyone wants to chime in about Opencl, feel free. I heard about this CUDA business only a couple of weeks ago and didn't know you could use your video cards like this. thx

• How do I open a hardware accelarated DirectX window on a secondary screen

  I'm looking to create a hardware accelarated DirectX (9 at the moment) window on a secondary screen. This screen is connected to the same graphics display as the primary screen (at least at the moment). Currently, when I try to open the window on the secondary screen based on window position or by dragging it there, CPU usage jumps by about 10%, which seems to indicate that windows is switching to a software fallback rather than the hardware accelaration. Machine is windows XP running a NVIDIA graphics card (varying cards as this runs on several machines), with the latest driver. It's also running CUDA at the same time to produce the images if that matters. Programming language is c++, manual window and message queue creation, no tookbox used at the moment to manage the GUI Thanks

• streaming to correct network interface

  I have IP cam that supports RTSP streaming. It's connected to router with 2 network cards with IP1 and IP2 addresses. I make 2 connections to IP cam by IP1 and IP2 addresses from the same IP and I need to receive corresponding streams thru correct network card, but both streams (RTP over UDP) go thru IP1. How this can be resolved? I don't know if RTSP server binds UDP sockets to corresponding IP and I don't know what IP stack is in IP cam (weak end system or strong end system). I haven't found anything interesting in router configuration. As I understand, routing table cannot help me cos I'm connected from the same IP, is it right? I'm porting an iOS app to Android and it wasn't a problem on iOS, but I'm wondering if it is the right approach on Android because of layouts. • jquery offset incorrect on floating elements

  I have a bunch of images each with the float: left property applied to them. They are constrained withing a 400px width area, forcing them into a grid of 4 X 4. If i try to get the position of them, they are always incorrect. What is causing this? You can see what I'm trying to do here: http://dev.redemptionconnect.com/cards/browse.
