• Design documents as part of Agile

  At my workplace, we face a challenge in that "agile" too often has meant "vague requirements, bad acceptance criteria, good luck!" We're trying to address that, as a general improvement effort. So, as part of that, I am proposing that we generate design documents that, above and beyond the user story level, accurately reflect the outcome of preliminary investigations of the effect of a given feature within the system and including answers to questions that we have asked the business. Is there an effective standard for this? We currently face a situation where a new feature may impact multiple areas in our "big ball of mud" system, and estimates are starting to climb due to this technical debt. Hopefully more thoughtful design processes can help.

As much as I respect that (motivating developers to give back to the community), it also puzzles me, as not all of us have the opportunity to do so, for a number of reasons (family, employer agreements, etc). How would you make a case for the non-contributor developer? Do you think that developers that do not contribute to open-source software are doomed from certain kinds of organizations?

In a few countries where English is not the official or native language, a few apps are selling far better than is proportionate for those country's population size compared with the U.S. So why Internationalize apps?   Customer Experience provides strategic driver for business growth Research released today from Oracle has revealed that customer experience is now a key driver for revenue growth in Europe, and an effective channel for brand differentiation in a globalized economy where products and services are increasingly commoditized. The research report, “Why Customer Satisfaction is No Longer Good Enough,” reveals that 81% of consumers surveyed are willing to pay more for superior customer experience. With nearly half (44%) willing to pay a premium of more than 5%. Improvement of the overall customer experience (40%), providing quick access to information and making it easier for customers to ask questions (35%) were cited as key drivers for spending more with a brand. The pan-European research, carried out in June 2012 by independent research company Loudhouse, surveyed 1400 online shoppers (50% female, 50% male) who had made a complaint or enquiry to a customer service department in the last 12 months. • Are the National Computer Science Academy certifications worth it?

  Hi to every one. I have a question regarding the real value of having NCSA's certifications. Today I reach their site and I easily passed the JavaScript certification within minutes, but I never reach questions related to Literal Javascript Notation (Json), closures or browser specific apis. This facts let me to doubt a bit of the real value of the test (and the proper certification you can have if you pay them $34), but maybe Im wrong and just earned a respected certification within the States for easy questions... in wich case I can spend some time doing other certifications on the same site. Did you have an NCSA certification and think is worth having it in your resume, or you know of a better certification program? thanks in advance, and looking forward to see your considerations.

• The new Google Analytics - what new useful features have you found?

  If you don't know already a new version of Google Analytics has just come out. On first initial views it doesn't seem like much of an improvement on the previous version. There's lot's linking to Google's social stats but I'm yet to see the value of that. Also it doesn't seem to make the best use of the important data, it's tending to push referral sites, keywords to the back and bring the less important data to the front. Is that a sign of things to come??? One feature I did find interesting was the visitors flow as it shows the visitors path through your site. What new features have you found useful/interesting?

  Question: Is there an open source license that requires that my name (or a name that I want to promote) will always be associated with a project and derivations of it? (Either within the copyright notice (©) or other.) Motivation: - My main motivation is to gain reputation. If it gained wide use, it could look very good on resume (I understand this is a long shot). - An additional benefit is that it would explicitly state to prospective employers that this code was used by myself before I started with the company and will continue to be used when I leave. It is my understanding: I am aware that 99.9% of open-source projects never take off, and that I am taking a long shot in regard to advancing reputation/career. I understand that many don't read/respect licenses. I understand that open source projects take a lot of time to manage. I understand that 'Concensus-Based Development' is the best chance at motivating a community and that I may/will loose substantial control.

• Java to PHP job change [closed]

  I've been working with java my entire career(8 years), web servers mostly. And there is a possibility for me to start working in environment that is generally PHP based. I've never worked with PHP before except that I wrote a simple send mail html form once or twice. Is there any benefit in learning a PHP stack or this will be a complete waste of time and degradation as a developer? No offense, but I've heard terrible things about that language and I'm afraid that if people see it in my resume later that would scare them off.

• Ubuntu desktop and dash problems

  I am not sure if i have posted it to right place, so if no please don't judge me, I am a newbie. I installed Ubuntu 13.04 and I am happy with it. I have two OS's in dual boot. Ubuntu and Windows 7. in Ubuntu I have 2 problems. The first one is when I suspend my system I cannot resume it again. It sometimes show me the password screen (user names and etc. (sorry i don't know the exact name of it)) and sometimes just a blank screen. what can be the problem? The second one is this: When I hit ALT+F2 it looks like this ( but not always. when I restart the system everything is OK till about 30-40 minutes. and then it looks like this. Please help, I really like Ubuntu but these 2 problems ruin my plans about it. Thanks

  Ok, lets get this over with. I have a dual-monitor, ati setup on gnome-shell that was just fine until this morning. Then, this happened. Look closer... Whatever has happened to my ubuntu setup? My second monitor still works, entirely normally, with the exception that I cannot (obviously) access activities (as i am in gnome-fallback ). I do wish to resume my work... EDIT: By entirely normally, I mean I can move my mouse over it and have seperate windows on it and stuff. It's not mirroring. UPDATE: Unity works entirely normally.

• SEO Benefits of adding a Tumblr feed to site

  A client of ours has a CMS driven Blog in his hotel site - he would like to use the blog to add depth top his site and add seo benefits relating to the blogs content. The current blog is a basic header / text field and doesn't contain any tagging / meta features. Unfortunately we dont have a .net developer in our team to alter the existing blog and add meta / tagging and there isn't budget to hire one - so I considered using a Tumblr blog - setting it up externally - giving it a blog.hotelname.com address and feeding it into the existing page via tumblrs js - which basically does a document.write into the page - which we can style. I understand from a previous post (Poor CMS blog vs Tumblr embed as a general rule most search engines ignore JS created content - but will the above approach act as an improvement on the existing system for now - as the blog will be setup externally with its own url and also feed into the existing site? But my site SEO rank was very very... bad especially on Google. So then I removed the rel="nofollow" tag, but no improvement. The only difference between this site and my other sites is "External links". My other sites have good ranking on Google. Now I'm creating a site for reviews.   as a new linux user, used Ubuntu 12.10, I tried several tweaks with the SMB shares. I followed this tutorial to mount permanently 4 SMB shares from my local NAS. To resume, I : edit /etc/fstab added a line like : //servername/sharename /media/windowsshare cifs credentials=/home/ubuntuusername/.smbcredentials,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 0 0 created a credentials file for security reasons in my home folder (explained in the tutorial) ~/.smbcredentials It work perfectly, they are automounted on each reboot, but when I logon, I all the time get 4 file explorer open with each share. It is possible to avoid these file explorer window to be opened on every reboot ? I guess it's related to X or via a explicit deny or these graphical mount, but I don't have any clues on how to proceed Thank you for your time,

  When evaluating contributions to open source projects, does testing the code on various real-world inputs, reducing a large number of complicated bugs to small test cases and filing good bug reports count as a significant contribution? I've done this for several open-source projects (specifically D compilers) where I wanted to help out but the codebase was too complicated to learn my way around in the amount of spare time I have. I'm interested in both the perspective of the main developers (those that write the code and fix the bugs) and from the perspective of employers (in case I want to put it on my resume at some point).

  We're trying to come up with terms that better describe our bugs/defects. To us, the term 'bug' or 'defect' is too generic and doesn't accurately reflect what is happening. For example, instead of saying that there is a bug (in the general sense), we'd rather say what type of bug (an error, or enhancement, or improvement, etc.). What names do you use for describing 'bugs'? We found http://www.softwaredevelopment.ca/bugs.shtml which has some pretty good classifications. How do you classify them?
