• I can not print on Windows 7 shared printer

  For a while I can not print from my Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit pc on a Windows 7 shared printer. Before that everything was ok. The printer is HP LaserJet 1100. The error message is: "File "/usr/lib/cups/backend/smb" not available: No such file or directory" I have tried to reinstall the samba, I have configured the workgroup properly. I have tried to reinstall the printer on the Ubuntu machine with the proper address, or with lpd (I have read somewhere). If I restart the printer on the cups web interface ("Resume Printer") the problem seems to be solved, but not. (The printer seems to be idle, and if I want to print, I still get the error message.) I have checked the share rights on the Windows 7 pc, and I think it is ok.

I have Windows side by side Ubuntu 13.04 in my computer and i have done (like-Shutting down Windows properly...) things as these in the notice. But it's not working.

  There is a coworker who has stolen credit for my work. I created a system that will show live statuses of printing machines throughout the plant. There was one glitch in it so the coworker made an improvement and then re-wrote the entire system (copying 90% of my code, yet he added a new piece of hardware then took over the project). Now he asks me programming questions from time to time. I don't mind teaching coworkers how to program, but since he has stolen my ideas and credit in the past I am reluctant to teach him all I know. Today he asks me for a particularly challenging algorithm for this system. His code now looks exactly like the way I would program! How would you handle the situation? How can I decline helping him without appearing to not being a team player?

  I'm reworking our site to reduce HTTP requests and blocking requests by concatenating JS, css, gzipping, loading all JS via LABjs and using CSS sprites for images that were loaded individually via <img> tags before. Progress has been great so far - 5x page load performance improvement. However, we're in the top 5 organic search ranking in google for many targeted keywords and phrases. I'm afraid eliminating so many img tags with alt attributes can hurt our SEO. Does anyone have any experience with alt tag manip/removal and effects on SEO positions? Is previous rank "sticky"?

  I have a Thinkpad T61p with Quadro FX570M. I just installed the Ubuntu 11.10. I have tried to download the driver LINUX DISPLAY DRIVER - X86 version 295.20 from NVIDIA, but I do not manage to install it. If I open System Screens, there is an unknovn screen driver. My installation works fine except, fails on resume with a black and white pattern all over the screen and I have difficulties detecting an external monitor. Please, if you have any clue - help me out.

  In my game, when I pause the game using mEngine.stop() it works perfectly but when I press resume button that has code mEngine.start() it provide some movement to the physics body. So the created body does not stand at its desire position after the resuming the game. That fault I have found in other game developed by other developer also. So please provide some guidance for it. I also tried with mScene.onUpdate(0) and mScene.onUpdate(1) but I does not able to found anything new from it.

• sometimes, strange audio distortion(peeping, scratching), ubuntu 12.04

  i have a problem with my sound in ubuntu 12.04. the problem is, that sometimes out of nowhere, when switching songs, or playing youtube videos, changing volume with my keyboard buttons, that the sound gets distorted(peeping, scratching). i dont know if it is related, but when i skip through music in rythmbox, there is also a little scratching noise. i can sometimes temporarly fix it: for youtube videos, i refresh the page, and sometimes it works agian normal, mostly not. for audio playback with rythmbox, i have to pause the song for sometime, and resume it, and hope that it works. before all that,i have changed my soundcard to "Analog Surround 5.1" in the sound settings from ubuntu, but i also used alsamixer to change it from 2 channels to 6 channels, since changing in ubuntu sound settings alone wasnt enough to make the other speaks work. i use a ASUS P8-H61-M LE B3 Revision Motherboard. which has a built in surround soundcard.

• System crashed while upgrading, now unable to recover. Please help

  Yesterday while upgrading from 11.4 to 11.10, due to power cut my system crashed. Ubuntu is unable to boot. While booting I get two options in grub, one is for recovery mode and the other is for normal ubuntu booting (and others are also thr for mem check and booting to windows). When I try to boot it normally, it pauses booting while displaying ' Checking battery statues' . Though i am not using a laptop, I am on a desktop. And In recovery mode the menu has 4 options - resume boot, fsck , remount and root ( to goto shell prompt) . If I go to shell and type ' apt-get dist upgrade' , it shows - W: not using locking for read only lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock E:unable to write to /var/cache/apt E:The package lists or status files could not be parsed or opened. Please instruct me to recover from this situation.

• Yet another suspend/wake up problem [closed]

  Hello dear friends and earthlings, I have some serious issue with waking up... It all worked 3 days ago and after an update it.. just stopped... i had no problems with it but now i just cant resume from the suspended mode... the screen wont turn on and nothing will happen... which is (sorry for using strong language) so i need help! i have not the slightest idea what could be the reason.   I've received my B.S. in Software Engineering in August 2010 and I've been looking for a job since. I've gotten two interviews since that went up to the technical phone interview and then they were no longer interested. One of the recruiters mentioned to me that they thought my fundamentals weren't strong enough. What do I need to brush up on in order to get past the technical phone interview. My language of most experience is C#. I know Object Oriented Programming. I know what the difference between an interface and an abstract class is. I've applied to positions from game programming to WPF/Silverlight. I have a portfolio website www.samarmstrong.me. It also has my resume on there. I never had real internship. Am I unhireable?

• Garbled screen after sleep/suspend with nVidia 8800M GTS Ubuntu 11.10

  Just did a clean install of 11.10, have been using it (and enjoying it!) for about a day now. But it seems that every time I resume from a sleep or blank screen after idling for a while, my desktop, as well as any programs on the screen get "garbled" I had a few windows open and all displayed the same gui glitching except for Chromium (I am guessing because it was minimized to the Unity Launcher, and not currently on the screen when I woke the PC up.) Anyone know what might be causing this, and how I might be able to fix it? I am using a Gateway P-6860FX with a C2D 1.8GHz, and nVidia 8800M GTS 512mb.   I went to interview a week ago for an IT position pertaining to tech support at Ameriprise. I applied and they liked my resume and experience. They then asked me to come in for the "first base." I went in and they gave me 20 logic questions out of which I got 9 correct. After that he told me that they will call me to let me know in 1 week. Does getting 9/20 right on a test like that means I will be rejected OR is it a way for them to know how I think? Please let me know. Thanks!

  To put it in a nutshell: which programming language would you advice to go at next after having mastered python? I do love python (after having done some rather simple scripting in Perl for a couple of years) for it's clearness and straightforwardness. Of course there is still room for improvement and topics I haven't touched yet. Still: I feel quite confident about my skills by now but want to keep learning.   Hi, when I use XamlReader.Load() with an invalid XAML string, the resulting XAMLParseException is not caught although beeing in a try-catch-block: try { UIElement xamlCode = XamlReader.Load(XamlText) as UIElement; } catch (Exception ex) { ErrorText = ex.Message; } The code is called from the Tick-Event of a DispatcherTimer, but also in Events like MouseLeftButtonDown the exception is not caught resulting in a break in the Line where I call .Load(). Does anyone know how to catch this Exception and resume normal programm activity? Thanks, Andrej
