  • REBOL: How to do another task while waiting an alarm to trigger ?

    - by Rebol Tutorial
So I have created an alarm function: alarm: func[seconds message [string! unset!]][ wav: load %attention.wav sound-port: open sound:// wait seconds do [ insert sound-port wav wait sound-port close sound-port if (value? 'message) [ print message ] ] ] which works like this: alarm 30 "Will trigger in 30 seconds" Now how can I for example show a timer which increments while waiting for the alarm since Rebol doesn't support thread ?

  • Implementing long running search in ASP.NET

    - by Gursharn Singh
I am building a search page in asp.net 3.5. Search takes a bit of time (few seconds to few minutes). Current I use AsyncMethodCaller to call Search method. AsyncMethodCaller method stores search results in Session. I user Ajax timer to check if Search method finished and then display results. What would be the best way to implement this scenario?

  • Is it possible to make an alarm using NSTimer and UIDatepicker?

    - by user557425
I have an app which plays some ambient noises. I have fitted it with a sleep timer and a local notifier which work fine, but the notifier will only fire when the app is in the background. I would like to be able to fit a standard alarm clock that the user can set using the date picker, ie, the user picks 07:15 am on the date picker and this triggers a sound being played at this time. Can this be done?

  • UI Thread .Invoke() causing handle leak?

    - by JYelton
In what circumstances would updating a UI control from a non-UI thread could cause the processes' handles to continually increase, when using a delegate and .InvokeRequired? For example: public delegate void DelegateUIUpdate(); private void UIUpdate() { if (someControl.InvokeRequired) { someControl.Invoke(new DelegateUIUpdate(UIUpdate)); return; } // do something with someControl } When this is called in a loop or on timer intervals, the handles for the program consistently increase.

  • Stopping long-running requests in Pylons

    - by Jack
I'm working on an application using Pylons and I was wondering if there was a way to make sure it doesn't spend way too much time handling one request. That is, I would like to find a way to put a timer on each request such that when too much time elapses, the request just stops (and possibly returns some kind of error). The application is supposed to allow users to run some complex calculations but I would like to make sure that if a calculation starts taking too much time, we stop it to allow other calculations to take place.

  • iOS dynamic object creation

    - by Abdul Ahmad
I've worked with Xcode and iOS on a few personal projects and have always used non-object-oriented designs for everything... just because I've been doing mostly learning/experimenting with things. Now I've been trying to implement some object oriented design into one game I've made previously. The idea is, I have a space ship that can shoot bullets. In the past I basically added the UIImageView to the storyboard and then connected it to the .h file and from there did things on it like move it around or whatever (using CGPointMake). The idea now is to make a method (and a whole other class soon) that will create a UIImageView programmatically, allocate it, add it to the superview etc... I've got this working so far, easy stuff, but the next part is a bit harder. Where do I store this local variable "bullet"? I've been saving it to an NSMutableArray and doing the following: (actually here are the methods that I have) -(void)movement { for (int i = 0; i < [array1 count]; i ++) { UIImageView *a = [array1 objectAtIndex:i]; a.center = CGPointMake(a.center.x + 2, a.center.y); if (a.center.x > 500) { [array1 removeObjectAtIndex:i]; [a removeFromSuperview]; } } } -(void)getBullet { UIImageView *bullet = [[UIImageView alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(ship.center.x + 20, ship.center.y - 2, 15, 3)]; bullet.image = [UIImage imageNamed:@"bullet2.png"]; bullet.hidden = NO; [self.view addSubview:bullet]; [array1 addObject:bullet]; } (by the way, array1 is declared in the .h file) and theres a timer that controls the movement method timer = [NSTimer scheduledTimerWithTimeInterval:0.5 target:self selector:@selector(movement) userInfo:nil repeats:YES]; first question is: what is the correct way of doing this? Storing a bullet for example until it is removed from the superview, should I store it another way? and another question is, when I remove a UIImageView from the superview, does that remove it from memory so its not using up system resources? Thank you for the help! (will update if I Think of other questions

  • Will this be garbage collected in JVM?

    - by stjowa
I am running the following code every two minutes via a Timer: object = new Object(this); Potentially, this is a lot of objects being created and a lot of objects being overwritten. Do the overwritten objects get garbage collected, even with a reference to itself being used in the newly created object? I am using JDK 1.6.0_13. Thanks for the help.

  • Scalability of Boost.Asio

    - by samm
I'm curious how far others have pushed Boost.Asio in terms of scalability. I am writing an application that may use close to 1000 socket objects, a handful of acceptor objects, and many thousand timer objects. I've configured it such that there's a thread pool invoking io_service::run and use strands in the appropriate places to ensure my handlers do not stomp on each other. My platform is Red Hat Enterprise Linux with Boost 1.39, though I'm not opposed to upgrading to a more recent version of boost.

  • [java] run 2 threads simultaneously

    - by lamsaitat
hi all, in the case of an IM client. i have made 2 separate threads to handle sending packets (by std io) and receiving packets. the question is how to make these 2 threads run simultaneously so that i can keep prompting for input while at the same time be ready to receive packets at any time? i have already tried setting a timer but the data is always lost receiving.

  • Wait set time for user input C# console app

    - by Marlon
For a Console app, I need to know how to wait at set amount of time (about 10 seconds), for a user to input a key or set of keys, before proceeding with an 'auto run' portion of the application. This is bugging me because I can't quite figure out how the timer works, or threading.sleep, what should I use? Been googling all day.
