• SSHing into EC2 instance fails - -v details below!

• JDK-7 SwingWorker deadlocks?

  I have a small image processing application which does multiple things at once using SwingWorker. However, if I run the following code (oversimplified excerpt), it just hangs on JDK 7 b70 (windows) but works in 6u16. It starts a new worker within another worker and waits for its result (the real app runs multiple sub-workers and waits for all this way). • Class/Model Level Validation (as opposed to Property Level)? (ASP.NET MVC 2.0)

  Basically, what the title says. I have several properties that combine together to really make one logical answer, and i would like to run a server-side validation code (that i write) which take these multiple fields into account and hook up to only one validation output/error message that users see on the webpage. I looked at scott guthries method of extending an attribute and using it in yoru dataannotations declarations, but, as i can see, there is no way to declare a dataannotations-style attribute on multiple properties, and you can only place the declarations (such as [Email], [Range], [Required]) over one property :(. i have looked at the PropertiesMustMatchAttribute in the default mvc 2.0 project that appears when you start a new project, this example is as useful as using a pair of pins to check your motor oil - useless! i have tried this method, however, creating a class level attribute, and have no idea how to display the error from this in my aspx page. i have tried html.ValidationMessage("ClassNameWhereAttributeIsAdded") and a variety of other thing, and it has not worked. and i should mention, there is NOT ONE blog post on doing validation at this level - despite this being a common need in any project or business logic scenario! can anyone help me in having my message displayed in my aspx page, and also if possible a proper document or reference explaining validation at this level?

I want to run a RegEx query in java that gives me the Strings 'UMLS concept ID', semantic type and match map list. Is RegEx the right tool or what is the most efficent way to accomplish this in Java?

• Connecting repeatable and non-repeatble backgrounds without a seam

  I have a 700x300 background repeating seamlessly inside of the main content-div. Now I'd like to attach a div at the bottom of the content-div, containing a different background image that isn't repeatable, connecting seamlessly with the repeatable background above it. Essentially, the non-repeatable image will look like the end piece of the repeatable image. Due to the nature of the pattern, unless the full 300px height of the background image is visible in the last repeat of the content-div's backround, the background in the div below won't seamlessly connect. Basically, I need the content div's height to be a multiple of 300px under all circumstances. What's a good approach to this sort of problem? Again, the missing piece seems to be the ability to respond to a resize event.

• Common JNDI resources in Tomcat

  Hi, I’m running a couple of servlet applications in Tomcat (5.5). All of the servlets use a common factory resource that is shared out using JNDI. At the moment, I can get everything working by including the factory resource as a GlobalNamingResource in the /conf/server.xml file, and then having each servlet’s META-INF/context.xml file include a ResourceLink to the resource. Snippets from the XML files are included below. NOTE: I’m not that familiar with tomcat, so I’m not saying that this is a good configuration!!! However, I now want to be able install these servlets into multiple tomcat instances automatically using an RPM. The RPM will firstly copy the WARs to the webapps directory, and the jars for the factory into the common/lib directory (which is fine). But it will also need to make sure that the factory resource is included as a resource for all of the servlets. What is the best way add the resource globally? I’m not too keen on writing a script that goes into the server.xml file and adds in the resource that way. Is there any way for me to add in multiple server.xml files so that I can write a new server-app.xml file and it will concatenate my settings to server.xml? Or, better still to add this JNDI resource to all the servlets without using server.xml at all? p.s. Restarting the server will not be an issue, so I don’t mind if the changes don’t get picked up automatically. • What are best practices for managing related Cabal packages?

  I'm working on a dataflow-based optimization library written in Haskell. It now seems likely that the library is going to have to be split into two pieces: A core piece with minimal build dependencies; call it hoopl-core. A full piece, call it hoopl, which may have extra dependencies on packages like a prettyprinter, QuickCheck, and so on. The idea is that the Glasgow Haskell Compiler will depend only on hoopl-core, so that it won't be too difficult to bootstrap the compiler. Other compilers will get the extra goodies in hoopl. Package hoopl will depend on hoopl-core. The Debian package tools can build multiple packages from a single source tree. Unfortunately Cabal has not yet reached that level of sophistication. But there must be other library or application designers out there who have similar issues (e.g., one package for a core library, another for a command-line interface, another for a GUI interface). What are current best practices for building and managing multiple related Haskell packages using Cabal?

• Why does my Workflow Service (4.0) variable go null in a DoWhile Activity?

  I have a WF service that I'm trying to setup receive activities to "Subscribe" and "Unsubscribe". I'm using This WF Durable Duplex Tutorial as a basis because my service performs callbacks to clients. Basically, think of it as a chat service. I can make client calls to the two receive activities just fine. What happens is the callback address of the client is passed in to Subscribe() on the service. The address is stored as a variable in the WF service and everything looks like it would work as to be expected. When a client calls Unsubscribe(), my watch I have set on the address var during debugging shows it as null. So what gives? Here's the basic setup of my WF service layout... Everything is enveloped in a DoWhile activity. Inside of that is a Pick activity and two Pick branches. The first branch is for subscribing activities. It has a receive-sendreply activity that assigns the string passed by the client to the WF address var. The second branch handles unsubscribing. The trigger is the Request activity and the client address is again passed in. From there it goes into a sequence, starting with an If. It checks to see if the unsubscribeAddress equals the address already subscribed. If it does, then it sets the address to String.Empty and sends a success message back to the client. Why would a variable that's scoped to the enveloping DoWhile activity be implicitly assigned to null? I'm trying to get this to work so I can implement multiple client subscribers from there and work on triggers that invoke callbacks to multiple clients. CONCAT EDIT: I set a breakpoint at the DoWhile level and my var is null once Unsubscribe() is called. When Subscribe() is invoked, the watch shows a value in the var all the way through. Until I Unsubscribe() with a client. Should I be using a While Activity instead?

  I'm just starting to learn T-SQL and could use some help in understanding what's going on in a particular block of code. The T-SQL code does exactly what I want, which is to make a single result based on the results of a query, which will then be used in another query. However, I can't figure out how the SELECT @column_list =... statement is putting multiple values into a single string of characters by being inside a SELECT statement. Without the assignment to @column_list, the SELECT statement would simply return multiple rows. How is it that by having the variable within the SELECT statement that the results get "flattened" down into one value? How should I read this T-SQL to properly understand what's going on?

  I have been experimenting with TMask in Delphi 2010 and it seems to work as expected except in one situation: when the mask name contains [ or ] the mask always seem to return false. For example: var MaskObj : TMask; begin MaskObj:= TMask.Create('c:\[test]\*'); try Result:= MaskObj.Matches('c:\[test]\text'); finally FreeAndNil(MaskObj); end; end; returns false. ... Yes, [ and ] are legal characters in file name. So if I want to exclude for example all files in c:[test]*, what could I do here? My only solution is to do a StringReplace if [ is detected, but this will be slow for a large number of files: if (pos('[', Mask)>0) then begin mask:= ReplaceString(Mask, '[','_', etc... // and do the same for the file name--- end; Is there any other approach?

• How do you unit test web page authorization using ASP.NET MVC?

  Let's say you have a profile page that can only be accessed by the owner of that profile. This profile page is located at: User/Profile/{userID} Now, I imagine in order to prevent access to this page by other users, you could structure your UserController class's Profile function to check the current session's identity: HttpContext.Current.User.Identity.Name If the id matches the one in the url, then you proceed. Otherwise you redirect to some sort of error page. My question is how do you unit test something like this? I'm guessing that you need to use some sort of dependency injection instead of the HttpContext in the controller to do the check on, but I am unclear what the best way to do that is. Any advice would be helpful.

For work I'm dealing with a large database (160 million + rows a year, 10 years of data) and have a quandary; A large percentage of the data we upload is null data and I'd like to stop it from being uploaded. The data in question is spatial in nature, so I have one table like so: idLocations (Auto-increment int, PK) X (float) Y (foat) Alwaysignore (Bool) Which is used as a reference in a second table like so: idLocations (Int, PK, "FK") idDates (Int, PK, "FK") DATA1 (float) DATA2 (float) ... DATA7 (float) So, Ideally I'd like to find a method where I can do something like: INSERT INTO tblData(idLocations, idDates, DATA1, ..., DATA7) VALUES (...), ..., (...) WHERE VALUES(idLocations) NOT LIKE (SELECT FROM tblLocation WHERE alwaysignore=TRUE ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE DATA1=VALUES(DATA1) So, for my large batch of input data (250 values in a block), ignore the inserts where the idLocations matches an idLocations values flagged with alwaysignore.   Hello! I'm writing a program that will concatenate a string based on letters, and then check an array to see if that string exists. If it does, then it will print a line in IB saying so. I've got all the ins-and-outs worked out, save for the fact that the simulator keeps crashing on me! • Does C# have an equivalent to Scala's structural typing?

  In Scala, I can define structural types as follows: type Pressable { def press(): Unit } This means that I can define a function or method which takes as an argument something that is Pressable, like this: def foo(i: Pressable) { // etc. The object which I pass to this function must have defined for it a method called press() that matches the type signature defined in the type - takes no arguments, returns Unit (Scala's version of void). I can even use the structural type inline: def foo(i: { def press(): Unit }) { // etc. It basically allows the programmer to have all the benefits of duck typing while still having the benefit of compile-time type checking. Does C# have something similar? I've Googled but can't find anything, but I'm not familiar with C# in any depth. If there aren't, are there any plans to add this?

  I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to linq and I'm working on a site that parses a json feed using json.net. The problem that I'm having is that I need to be able to pull multiple fields from the json feed and use them for a foreach block. The documentation for json.net only shows how to pull just one field. I've done a few variations after checking out the linq documentation, but I've not found anything that works best. • Regular Expressions: Positive Lookahead and Word Border question

  Hello again Stackoverflow people! Assume I have these words: smartphones, smartphone I want to match the substring "phone" from within them. However, in both case, I want only "phone" to be returned, not "phones" in the first case. In addition to this, I want matches only if the word "phone" is a suffix only, such that: fonephonetics (just an example) is not matched. I assumed that the regex (phone([?=s])?)\b would give me what I need, but it is currently matching "phones" and "phone", but not the "fonephonetics" one. I don't need "phones". I want "phone" for both cases. Any ideas about what is wrong, and what I can do? Thank you in advance!

  I'd like to use this method to create user-friendly URL. Because my site is in Croatian, there are characters that I wouldn't like to strip but replace them with another. Fore example, this string: ŠÐCŽ šdccž needs to be: sdccz-sdccz So, I would like to make two arrays, one that will contain characters that are to be replaced and other array with replacement characters: string[] character = { "Š", "Ð", "C", "C", "Ž", "š", "d", "c", "c", "ž" }; string[] characterReplace = { "s", "d", "c", "c", "z", "s", "d", "c", "c", "z" }; Finally, this two arrays should be use in some method that will take string, find matches and replace them. In php I used preg_replace function to deal with this. In C# this doesn't work: s = Regex.Replace(s, character, characterReplace); Would appreciate if someone could help. Thanks

• WPF Control Templating: Keeping Windows look and feel

  I'm working on a control template for an inherited TextBox class. I'd like to use this template to add additional controls with the ScrollViewer. I can achieve that goal just fine, what I can't do recreate the border in such away that it matches the Windows look and feel. I have Windows Classic as my theme on XP. Textboxes are typically shown with the standard inset border style. With the XP Fischer Price theme, borders of textbox are a flat style and light blue. Is there any way of specifying something like this in the template? Ideally it would use the theme default (grey inset for Classic, flat and light blue for fischer price theme).

• SQLite on iPhone - Techniques for tracking down multithreading-related bugs

  Hey guys, I'm working with an Objective-C wrapper around SQLite that I didn't write, and documentation is sparse... It's not FMDB. The people writing this wrapper weren't aware of FMDB when writing this code. It seems that the code is suffering from a bug where database connections are being accessed from multiple threads -- which according to the SQLite documentation won't work if the if SQLite is compiled with SQLITE_THREADSAFE 2. I have tested the libsqlite3.dylib provided as part of the iPhone SDK and seen that it is compiled in this manner, using the sqlite_threadsafe() routine. Using the provided sqlite library, the code regularly hits SQLITE_BUSY and SQLITE_LOCKED return codes when performing routines. To combat this, I added some code to wait a couple of milliseconds and try again, with a maximum retry count of 50. The code didn't contain any retry logic prior to this. Now when a sqlite call returns SQLITE_BUSY or SQLITE_LOCKED, the retry loop is invoked and the retry returns SQLITE_MISUSE. Not good. Grasping at straws, I replaced the provided sqlite library with a version compiled by myself setting SQLITE_THREADSAFE to 1 - which according to the documentation means sqlite is safe to be used in a multithreaded environment, effectively serialising all of the operations. It incurs a performance hit, that which I haven't measured, but it ridded the app of the SQLITE_MISUSE happening and seemed to not need the retry logic as it never hit a busy or locked state. What I would rather do is fix the problem of accessing a single db connection from multiple threads, but I can't for the life of me find where it's occurring. So if anyone has any tips on locating multithreaded bugs I would be extremely appreciative. Thanks in advance.

• Jquery AutoComplete Plugin calling

  When I use JQuery's autocomplete and hardcode the array values in the page it works wonderful; but what I need to do is obtain the array values from either a web service or from a public function inside a controller. I have tried various way and can't seem to make it work.
