• Why can't I install Java?

  I've been searching high and low for someone who can help me. I've been trying for a month. A month. to install Java on my new PC to no avail. No tech support forum can seem to help me. It all started while playing tekkit one day. I kept running out of memory (using the 32-bit JRE 7 u45) so I decided to install the 64-bit version. I uninstalled the 32-bit version first, for some reason, and downloaded the 64 bit runtime. In the installer, I go through all the normal screens until the installation progress bar appears. Then, it just sits there. No progress is made. No CPU is used by the installer, or any of its dependencies. The installer will stay like this for hours, days, and in one case a whole week without doing anything at all. I've tried installing older versions, the 32-bit version, even Java 6 and none of them will install. UAC is disabled, I've run regedit, CCleaner, and any other "fix-it" program there is. It's getting to the point where I may just have to wipe my hard drives and start over. I have several applications that require java, so this is an absolute necessity. • mysqld-nt.exe exist in task list, but actually it's not running?

  mysqld-nt.exe is showing in the task manager, but I cannot connect to it. I tried: telnet localhost 3306 And it fails to connect. So I restarted the server,and it's ok. This happens every day. Any ideas? • Connection timeout when trying to SSH

  The other day I tried to connect to my remote server via SSH as i always have. But now when I try to connect it just times out after about 60 seconds. I run service ssh start Which tells me that Job is already running: ssh. • Midnight Commander Woes: Output while panels are active, and tab completion.

  I'm trying out midnight commander (loved Norton back in the day!) and I'm finding two things hard to work out. I'm curious if there's ways around this or not however. 1) If the panels are active and I issue a command that has a lot of output, it appears to be lost forever. i.e., if the panels are visible and I cat something (i.e., cat /proc/cpuinfo), that info is gone forever once the panels get redrawn. Is there anyway to see the output? I've tried 'ctrl-o', but it appears to just give me a fresh sub-shell and wipes the previous output away. Pausing after every invocation is a bit irritating, so I'd rather not use that option. 2) Tab completion for commands When mc is running, it consumes the tab character for switching panels. Is there any way to get around this so I can still type in paths and what not on the command line? I'm running cygwin if that matters at all.

• .NET 2.0 "not installed" after upgrade to Windows 7

  I Recently upgraded to Windows 7 (Business) RTM from Vista Business and everything is going great, it fixed the BSOD I was getting and the performance of my laptop is improved. However; during the upgrade, something seems to have gone awry with my .NET 2.0 installation. When attempting to install FlashDevelop, I get the following error from the installer package You need to install Maicrtosoft.NET 2.0 runtime before installing FlasgDevelop. You Have . I have a previous release of FD installed from before the upgrade and this still works fine. So I gave up on the new version of FD and got on with my day. Then I tried to install the Microsoft SQL Server Database Publishing Wizard 1.1 and that says I am missing a couple of prerequisites, one of which is .NET 2.0. When I download the .NET 2.0 runtime the installer fails, telling me that This product is already installed as part of the operating system. Does anyone have any idea how to make my computer recognise that .NET 2 is in fact installed. UPDATE I've checked Windows Features and everything relating to .NET is already installed. I've also been through my list of installed programs looking for .NET to in an attempt to uninstall it but it isn't there. In fact, the only thing that looks like a .NET distro that I am able to uninstall is the 3.5 Compact Framework.

• Powershell script to delete sub folders and files if creation date is >7 days but maintain parent folders of sub folders and files <7 days old

  I'm currently using the Powershell script below to delete all files directories and sub directories of "$dump_path" that are seven days or older based upon the creation date and not modified date. The problem with this script is this: If folder "A" is seven (or more) days old it will be deleted even if its sub folders and files are less then seven days old. What I would like this script to do is this: Delete all files from the root and in all sub folders of "$dump_path" that are seven or more days old but maintain the parent folder(s) of files and folders that are less than seven days old even if that means the parent folders are more than seven days old. If all subfolders and files are seven days or older than the parent folder then the parent can be deleted. Slightly obscure problem I know, but the intention is to have a 7 day retention period of all data in a 'sandbox' location of our shared areas. Also, an added bonus if it could generate a log of what it deletes and e-mails it out post deletion. Thank you for reading and I hope that all makes sense! • Please advise on VPS config choice (with SQL Server Express)

  Hi all, I might be interested in getting a VPS hosting plan for some small personal sites and .NET projects. Was thinking of Softsys Bronze Plan, as my current shared host plan is with them too. The stuff I want to host has grown beyond the capabilities of a Shared hosting plan, and I also want more control over the IIS/ASP.NET configuration, that's why I'm considering VPS. The main config details would be: Hyper-V 30 GB of diskspace 1 GB of RAM More info here: http://www.softsyshosting.com/Windows-VPS-HyperV.aspx Does anyone have experience with this plan (or something similar from another host), and maybe could answer these couple of questions: Bronze has a total diskspace of 30GB. Is the OS part of this quota or not ? If so, how much does a base configuration with Windows 2008 take up in diskspace ? Would you advise Windows 2008 R2 or Normal. Or would you advise to use Windows 2003 with this config. I'm planning on running a SQL Server Express install too. Would 1 GB of RAM be enough for both the Windows 2008 (R2) and SQL Express. The database load will not be that very high (a couple of 1000 records returned each day). The DB will most likely be far away from the 4GB limit, that's why I'd go for a SQL Express instead of paying extra licensing costs for a SQL Web install. But I'm more concerned about performance. Would you recommend Softsys as a VPS host ? I've been with them for one year for my Shared hosting plan, and have no complaints so far. Also, as I have no VPS experience, what are the pitfalls I need to be aware of, in terms of performance mainly, but maybe in other areas too ? Mathieu

• Usb device not working properly on a Thinkpad T60

  I have just started getting a message that a USB device is not working properly. This is on a new Thinkpad T60 running Windows XP Professional SP3. I have had all devices attached for about 10 days or so. When I go to device manager there is no sign of a problem: everything is working correctly. I am unable to find out which device it is. I searched this forum but the only reference I found was to older computers which may not be Usb2 capable. This is not my problem. Any ideas? Thanks. EDIT: I realized I had a harddrive attached but turned off. Although I could not track down any error messages except the balloon that came up, I have disconnected it and, so far, no messages. We'll see over the next day or two, but this may be the problem. Thanks EDIT: This has not solved the problem. I get the message that one of the USB devices has malfunctioned and it points to "USB root hub (2 ports)" and shows an unused port and an unknown device. However, when I check my device manager, it says that there are no problems, everything is working as it should. ?? EDIT: I now found the event log view and there are 2 types of error messages. They do not relate to the time that I get the balloon. 2 of the 3 are "Ati2mtag" errors and the third is "System Control Manager". Are these related to my problem, and the balloon just pops up randomly? EDIT: well, I'm still having the problem, and have narrowed it down to a malfunctioning device. Thanks to all.

• How to monitor changes in the frequency of network latency spikes over time?

  I'm currently trying to troubleshoot an issue with my network in which I get latency spikes up to 200 seconds (normally around 50 secs) in an apparently random way at apparently random moments of the day. While trying to find what part of my messy network needs to be blamed (outside of the scope of this question - discussed a bit on chat), I realized I have no reliable way to confirm that a change actually improved anything. So far, the main way in which i notice this is that irssi shows [Lag: 15 (??)] in the statusbar, increasing every 5 seconds, and all other connections seem to be affected too. Since this depends on my observations, it's not a very reliable method to know how often it really happens. Note that just sending ICMP pings is probably not enough, but that's just my guess. It might be a "bufferbloat" issue, it might be packet loss, it might only apply to persistent connections. I suspect this because a few months ago, when the issue started, I had a "ping" command running in background and it didn't show anything weird at all during the latency spikes. This seems to have changed now (pings don't go through), but still, I'd prefer something more robust.

• Exchange 2003: Unrestrict send mail size for specific users / groups?

  Good (insert appropriate time of day here) SF folks, I have the following situation; We have a message size limit for sending set at 20mb in Global Settings | Message Delivery. We have a limit of 50mb set at an external 3rd party spam vendor. I need to enable some users to be able to send messages that are upwards of around 40mb in size. However, when I set the Sending Message Size Maximum to 50mb within the delivery restrictions of a users exchange properties, it would appear that this does not win. It seems that the lowest value wins for this situation. I need to be able to allow certain users to send messages larger than the 20mb limit, but to have everyone else have the 20mb limit in place. How can I do this? The only way I could see was to raise the limit set in Global Settings | Message Delivery to 50mb and then set everyone elses (bar the people who need increased limit) delivery restrictions max size down. But I cannot see an easy way to do the last bit hence my post here looking for advice. There are valid reasons we need to send mail this size and whilst we are putting together other mechanisms for delivery this data, we still need to get this put in place. Thanks in advance Kip

• Replacing stock Core 2 Duo heatsink fan (just the fan really) with a Dell CPU fan

  My old heatsink fan broke and I'm trying to reconnect its plugs to a new fan. My Dell CPU fan has some custom Dell plug. I snipped the old fan's wire in half and kept the plug on the end of it. I want to connect it to the Dell fan wire to the plug. The motherboard is a P5Q-e, the stock Core 2 Duo fan was .20A and the dell is .70A. Is that going to matter? The wire from the fan has four wires, the wire with the plug has four wires. They share three, of the four colors: red, black, and blue. Dell's fourth wire is white, while the plug's fourth wire is yellow. Is it safe to assume that I just connect the yellow and the white plug together and match the rest up? I don't want to take any risk of damaging anything. It runs fine passively without a fan, but I have speedstep on, so I would like to use this fan and just fasten it to the heatsink with some twist ties and paperclips and call it a day.

• Disable IPv6 on Debian VPS (Virtuozzo!)

  I have a Debian Lenny VPS, that's running virtualized by Parallels/Virtuozzo. Currently, the network interface doesn't have an IPv6 address - and that's good, because I don't have an ip6tables configuration. But I assume, that I could wake up one day, and ifconfig will show me an ipv6 address for the interface - because I have no control over the kernel or its modules - they're under the control of the hosting company. That would leave the server completely vulnerable to attacks from IPv6 addresses. What would be the best way to disable IPv6 (for the interface or maybe for the entire host)? Usually I would simply disable the kernel module, but that's not possible in this case. Update Maybe I should add, that I can use iptables and everything normally (I'm root on the VPS), but I can't make changes to the kernel or load kernel modules because of the way Virtuozzo works (shared kernel). lsmod always returns nothing. I can't call ip6tables -L (it says that I need to insmod, or that the kernel would have to be upgraded). I don't think, that changes to /etc/modprobe.d/aliases would have any effect, or do they? Networking Config? I thought, that maybe I can turn IPv6 off from /etc/network/... Is that possible? I just see, that they've set up avahi, so I should probably change the setting use-ipv6=yes to "no" in /etc/avahi/avahi.conf (?) Has anybody already tried this solution, and can I rely on it? I don't know too much about avahi. Would it actually have any effect? Or could it even bring my entire interface down, once IPv6 is enabled by the kernel?

  Here it goes. My friend saved by his works into my flash drive which was detectable/openable but ... The very next day, the drive wouldn't show up in My Computer and Windows gave him error code 43 (Unknown device). I been searching for the next few hours to find a solution as the works inside is important to him. I know he should back up his files but let's not go there. So .... I tried others few systems that once detected his flash drive but the problem still persisted. I don't know whether or not his flash drive is damaged but when plug/un-plugging, there are still sounds coming out though. Tried solutions: [On Vista Home Premium/HIS COME]Uninstalled -- Restarted com -- Re-installed (ERROR 43) [Windows 7/MY COM] Uninstalled --- Restarted com --- Can't install (ERROR 43) It seems that my com (Windows 7) had the lastest drivers already but still can't detect it. Its a Kingston DataTraveller 101 (DT101) 8GB. Could unplugging the flash drive without clicking "Safely Remove Hardware" is the problem? Kindly provide some help. Thank you all.

• Is a rubber keyboard suitable for heavy use?

  Every keyboard wears out with time, and mine has some age already. The day it fails is coming closer and closer. So I'm slowly starting to look around for a new one. I use the keyboard for gaming and programming, so it gets some pretty solid use. I also tend to eat by the computer, so there's plenty of... uhh... lifeforms down there. Anyway, I was looking at these rubber keyboards. They come pretty cheap (my local computer shop has one for less than $20) and they seem to have some nice properties. They can be easily cleaned, they're quiet, and can be rolled up when needed (plus no worries about spilled drinks). However I'm wondering what their type-ability is. If I can't write on it at a decent speed, the rest of the features don't matter. Not that I'm a fast typer, but being a professional progammer does give a boost to the skill. I couldn't find any reviews on the net so I'm turning to you. Who has used these keyboards and what was your experience? Perhaps there is something else I haven't though of why such a keyboard would not be a good idea?

• Resolving a BSOD/CPU/GPU issue...

  Hello all, I'm getting a BSOD / system crash (sometimes the PC just quits without a BSOD). Hardware Specifications cpu: i7 920 2666MHz / 8 cores (not OCed afaik) mobo: Asus P6T SE ram: 2x Corsair CM3X2G1333C9 (64bit DDR3 667MHz) gfx: ATI Radeon HD 5970 1GB (XFX HD5970 BE) os: Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit (legit) All bios, firmware and drivers are all up to date (as of today). Symptoms Sometimes the PC runs smoothly, sometimes I get this BSOD. The BSOD always happens when I'm doing something related to graphics, such as viewing a video or playing a game. I get to know about the imminent BSOD ~10 seconds earlier; the PC starts freezing occasionally but increasing in frequency and length of lag (I noticed processor usage in creased from Process Monitor). I've tweaked BIOS settings occasionally but afaik, it was in vain. A day or so ago, I reset it to factory settings. BSOD contents The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x00000101 (0x0000000000000019, 0x0000000000000000, 0xfffff88001f35180, 0x0000000000000004). 15-12-2010 A fatal hardware error has occurred. • i7 overclocking problem

  Hi everyone, I've got an overclocked system that seems to be misbehaving. When trying to boot up from cold the system just hangs and nothing is output to the screen. Fans are on as they should but nothing happens to finish the boot. From here I have to switch it off then on again and the boot completes. If I go into the tweak menu in the BIOS I'm informed that a boot has failed I've been in touch with Overclockers UK support a bit and theres not yet been a solution. We've mainly been tweaking the voltage for the CPU. Any suggestions? I'm new to Overclocking which is why I got a bundle with OCUK. With this issue happening on Cold Boot too its tricky to test as I have to make a change then wait till the next day. My system is here: Intel Core i7 930 2.80Ghz overclocked to 4GHz Gigabyte X58A-UD3R (BIOS Version: FC) 6GB RAM Power Supply - CoolerMaster Silent Pro M series 700W One suggestion made by OCUK was that maybe its the power supply but I'm not sure and dont have a spare - it's brand new and a pretty expensive piece of kit. Any thoughts on this? Other recomendations for Power? thanks Ben

• The best LCD monitors for reading text?

  I have been using an 19" Acer AL1916A B for several years now. While possibly failing in other areas - the text was incredibly sharp. Which is very important for someone like me that spends all day writing code. My eyes are very finely tuned and I can see refresh rates and even the smallest pixel overflows from anti-aliasing. Unfortunately it finally died. I then tried a 19" widescreen Acer X193w+ and found that the text was much less sharp. I also tried a 19" widescreen Samsung 920nw and was also disappointed. (by the way, widescreen is a great invention for companies - the same price for less screen!). I am looking for a couple of options of LCD's that hands-down render text ultra sharp and clear. This isn't subjective - an LCD either has sharp text or it doesn't. Anyone with delicate eyes can see the difference and knows what I'm talking about. Please also bare in mind that you're vision can adjust to a given screen; rendering your judgment biased if you do not constantly use other monitors also. If you use windows with ClearType enabled please do not reply.

• Vista WHS Client stopped resolving local names

  I’m running Windows Home Server PP2 in my home, with 3 client computers: two XP and one Vista. I have a router that provides my local DHCP and the server has a static IP address. The other day the Vista machine hung, and on reboot stopped resolving local names. It will show the green home server client icon in the system tray, but if I attempt to log in to the console, I get a “This computer cannot connect to your home server” message. If I ping the server name from the command line, it does not resolve, and gives a “could not find host” message. Oddly enough, if I browse the network, I can see the server, but double clicking on it fails. The other machines on the local network have no problems seeing the server, and the Vista machine has no problems resolving names from the internet, it just can’t see any local machines. I’m aware that I can work around this by adding entries to my HOSTS file (it does work), but I’d like this to work the way it’s “supposed” to. I’m an experienced computer user and developer, but not a networking whiz. Can anyone tell me how local name resolution is supposed to work in my environment and/or suggest ways to troubleshoot this? • Regular issue with keys on temp tables

  We run a large forum with lots of reads and writes, particularly to the posts and topics tables which are both innodb. Last week I started doing 12 hourly backups with innobackupex because mysqldump just takes forever (7+ million rows in posts table.) It seems that something doesn't like these backups because I have a recurring problem every other day. The symptoms; The front page of the site starts throwing errors The logs start showing errors like Error: 126 - Incorrect key file for table '/tmp/mysql/#sql_4e87_14.MYI'; try to repair it The /tmp/ dir fills up and we start getting Error: 1030 - Got error 28 from storage engine in the logs. The only way to fix is to optimize table on each of the posts and topics tables. I'm trying all I can to stop MySQL using disks for temp tables, but I'd have more problems than this if it used all my memory also. • ADO 2.8, VMWare and SQL Server - sudden bulk dropped connections

  We have an overworked server currently running a single SQL Server 2000 instance on physical hardware, and about 40 different apps interact with it on a daily basis. Last year, the RAID controller failed and we had no spare, so IT Support hurriedly migrated it overnight to a copy running on a VMWare Server. While it was on that server everything ran much quicker due to it being a big improvement in spec. However, the biggest app using it had occasional serious errors which never occurred on physical hardware. Specifically, several times a week it would disconnect batches of users - anywhere from just ten to hundreds at once, and all at the same time. It didn't affect any particular users or PCs or offices - all were affected equally. The only common thing was the app, which is a VB6 app using ADO 2.8 to connect. The other apps connecting to that virtualised instance of SQL Server seemingly had no problems, although they were (and are) responsible for only a tiny fraction of the work involving this server. The upshot is that after about two weeks of loving the speed and hating the random mass disconnections (which we were never able to find a cause for), we sadly took the decision to return to physical hardware and the disconnections vanished. Now we've reached the point where the old server just can't handle all that's being asked of it, and we're intending to migrate everything to 2 or more other servers. The snag is that there's a good chance they'll have to be virtual ones again. Given what happened last time, I'm trying to find out what possible reasons there could be for these mass disconnections. We were running VMWare ESX, but the network is Novell-based. Also, the server had a linked server setup to connect to an Informix server using a known-to-be-buggy ODBC driver, and this is used throughout the day. Any ideas on the cause(s)?

• I/O Error on LG GSA-H12N DVD drive on Windows 7

  I am facing an I/O Error when I try to burn DVD data discs on my LG GSA-H12N DVD drive on Windows 7. Note that I was able to do this same operation on the same hardware/software just a day earlier without any problems, but with Windows XP. The only change (AFAIK) has been the installation of Windows 7 to replace Windows XP on this PC. Here is the error I get when I try to burn a DVD data disc using CDBurnerXP 4.2.7.1801: Burning error occured An error occured while burning the disc. Most likely the disc is not usable. Usually these errors happen if the inserted media is not compatible to the drive or of poor quality. (devNTSPTI_IO_Error) Could not write to Disc (LBA: 52864 Length: 32). SCSI Pass-through Interface I/O Error. - 0xFF045D Note that there can be no problem with the discs since I have been using the same discs (from the same box) just before the Windows 7 installation with no problems. The only change has been Windows 7. I tried InfraRecorder v0.5 and ImgBurn v2.5 and got similar I/O errors: Note that Windows 7 lists the LG GSA-H21N drive as being compatible (see this link). I also checked the LG Drivers website and using the firware update from there updated the drive firmware from version UL01 to UL02. But, even this has not helped. The drive reads DVDs without any problem, but continues to produce coasters. Could someone help me figure out what is the problem? Thanks :)

• SQL Server rolling forward lots of transactions, what should I look at?

  I am running SQL Server Express on a Windows XP Embedded box. It runs for a day or two, doing some transactional processing for a POS type system, and with another system pulling data out to an OLAP DB for processing. After a while, I see in the event viewer the sequence SQL Server puts out when it restarts, copy rights, command line parameters, and so on. It seems like that coincides with our OLAP process crashing. I then see that when it restarts our transaction DB, it does a recovery, pulling in 10K or so in transactions that need to be rolled forward. Does this mean SQL has crashed? I don't really see much to indicate what happened. Update 1 I noticed I have my memory limit set to 1MB per query and 2TB for the server. These are the defaults. I only have one GB in the box. We have seen SQL crash a whole box by just using all the system memory. In this case though the whole box is up when we get to it.

• How to get gigabit network speeds on Windows XP?

  We've just installed gigabit switches at work, and things on the Linux side are going well. Our linux boxes, which use a Intel Corporation 82566DM-2 Gigabit nic (according to lspci), consistently get over 900 mbits/sec: iperf -c ipserver ------------------------------------------------------------ Client connecting to ipserver, TCP port 5001 TCP window size: 16.0 KByte (default) ------------------------------------------------------------ [ 3] local 192.168.40.9 port 39823 connected with 192.168.1.115 port 5001 [ ID] Interval Transfer Bandwidth [ 3] 0.0-10.0 sec 1.08 GBytes 929 Mbits/sec We have a bunch of Windows XP 64-bit machines that use Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx cards. I spent around a day trying to get equivalent speeds on them, but couldn't get above 200 Mbits/sec. I noticed the Windows iperf tests said that the TCP window size was 8 Kb by default (as opposed to 16 Kb on Linux, so I modified my test to reflect that. Still no love. I went to Broadcom's site, downloaded the latest drivers for the card and installed. Still no love. However, finally, I tried a 64 Kb window size with the new drivers, and finally an improvement! $ iperf -c ipserver -w64k ------------------------------------------------------------ Client connecting to ipserver, TCP port 5001 TCP window size: 64.0 KByte ------------------------------------------------------------ [ 3] local 192.168.40.214 port 1848 connected with 192.168.1.115 port 5001 [ ID] Interval Transfer Bandwidth [ 3] 0.0-10.0 sec 933 MBytes 782 Mbits/sec Much better, but still not really taking advantage of the full capabilities of the network. If the Linux box can reach 950 Mbits/sec consistently, this box should be able to as well. Also, if you're wondering about the medium, this is over the same cable...I'm switching back and forth.
