• Custom validation summary

  I'm using the UpdateModel method for validation. How do I specify the text for the error messages as they appear in the validation summary? Sorry, I wasn't entirely clear. When I call UpdateModel(), if there is parsing error, for example if a string value is specified for a double field, a "SomeProperty is invalid" error message is automatically added to the ModelState. How do I specify the text for said automatically generated error message? If I implement IDataErrorInfo as suggested, it's error message property gets called for every column, regardless of whether the default binder deems it valid or not. I'd have to reimplement the parse error catching functionality that I get for free with the default binder. Incidentally, the default "SomeProperty is invalid" error messages seem to have mysteriously dissappeared in the RC. A validation summary appears and the relevant fields are highlighted but the text is missing! Any idea why this is? Thanks again and I hope all this waffle makes sense!

• Does Amazon S3's HTTP Uploads feature support web-hook style callbacks?

  When uploading files to Amazon S3 using the browser http upload feature, I know I can specify a success_action_redirect field/value that will tell my browser where to go when the upload is done. I'm wondering: is it possible to ask Amazon to make a web hook style POST request to my web server whenever a file gets uploaded? Basically, I want a way of being notified whenever a client uploads a new file, so that my server can process the upload. I'd like to do this without relying on the client to make the request to my server to tell me the file has been uploaded (never trust the client, right?).

• Merging MySQL row entries into a single row

  I've got two tables, one for listings and another representing a list of tags for the listings table. In the listings table the tag ids are stored in a field called tags as 1-2-3-. This has worked out very well for me (regular expressions and joins to separate and display the data), but I now need to pull the titles of those tags into a single row. See below. listings table id tags 1 1-2-3- 2 4-5-6- tags table id title 1 pig 2 dog 3 cat 4 mouse 5 elephant 6 duck And what I need to produce out of the listings table is: id tags 2 mouse, elephant, duck

• Can we represent bit fields in JSON/BSON?

  We have a dozen simulators talking to each other on UDP. The interface definition is managed in a database. The simulators are written using different languages; mostly C++, some in Java and C#. Currently, when systems engineer makes changes in the interface definition database, simulator developers manually update the communication data structures in their code. The data is mostly 2-5 bytes with bit fields for each signal. What I want to do is to generate one file from interface definition database describing byte and bit field definitions and let each developer add it to his simulator code with minimal fuss. I looked at JSON/BSON but couldn't find a way to represent bit fields in it. Thanks Zubair

• rsync -c -i flags identical files as different

  My goal: given a list of files on local server, show any differences to the files with the same absolute path on remote server; e.g. compare local /etc/init.d/apache to same file on remote server. "Difference" for me means different checksum. I don't care about file modification times. I also do not want to sync the files (yet); only show the diffs. I have rsync 3.0.6 on both local and remote servers, which should be able to do what I want. However, it is claiming that local and remote files, even with identical checksums, are still different. Here's the command line: $ rsync --dry-run -avi --checksum --files-from=/home/me/test.txt --rsync-path="cd / && rsync" / me@remote:/ where: "me" = my username; "remote" = remote server hostname current working directory is '/' test.txt contains one line reading "/etc/init.d/apache" OS: Linux 2.6.9 Running cksum on /etc/init.d/apache on both servers yields the same result. The files are the same. However, rsync output is: me@remote's password: building file list ... done .d..t...... etc/ cd+++++++++ etc/init.d/ <f+++++++++ etc/init.d/apache sent 93 bytes received 21 bytes 20.73 bytes/sec total size is 2374 speedup is 20.82 (DRY RUN) The output codes (see http://www.samba.org/ftp/rsync/rsync.html) mean that rsync thinks /etc is identical except for mod time /etc/init.d needs to be changed /etc/init.d/apache will be sent to the remote server I don't understand how, with --checksum option, and the files having identical checksums, that rsync should think they're different. (I've tried with other files having identical mod times, and those files are not flagged as different.) I did run this in /, and made sure (AFAIK) that it's run remotely in /, so even relative pathnames will still be correct. I ran rsync with -avvvi for more debug info, but saw nothing remarkable. I'm wondering: is rsync still looking at file mod times, even with --checksum? am I somehow not setting up the path(s) right? what am I doing wrong?

One question I wanted to verify (I think I know the answer, but I can't find verification online) - does the DataType DataAnnotation perform regular expression checks to ensure that you have received a valid e-mail/phone/currency/etc? [Required(ErrorMessage = "Price required")] [DataType(DataType.Currency, ErrorMessage = "Not a valid price")] [Range(0, double.MaxValue, ErrorMessage = "Price must be greater than 0.")] public decimal Price { get; set; } I believe the answer is no (meaning I have to provide my own, custom, RegularExpressionAttribute), but I wanted to double check before I do that for various field types.

  Dear all, I am trying my hands understanding PCAP libraries. I am able to apply a filter and get the TCP payload at port 80. But what next ? How can I read the HTTP data - suppose I want to know the "User Agent" field value in the http header..how should I proceed ? I have searched the website (and googled a lot too), and could find a related thread here : http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2073183/writing-a-http-sniffer. But this doesn't help me anywhere...   Suppose I have the following Domain class mapping to a legacy table, utilizing read-only second-level cache, and having a transient field: class DomainObject { static def transients = ['userId'] Long id Long userId static mapping = { cache usage: 'read-only' table 'SOME_TABLE' } } I have a problem, references to DomainObject are being shared due to first-level caching, and thus transient fields are writing over each other. For example, def r1 = DomainObject.get(1) r1.userId = 22 def r2 = DomainObject.get(1) r2.userId = 34 assert r1.userId == 34 That is, r1 and r2 are references to the same instance. This is undesirable, I would like to cache the table data without sharing references. Any ideas? [Edit] Understanding the situation better now, I believe my question boils down to the following: Is there anyway to disable first level cache for a specific domain class while still using second level cache?

  Is it possible to customize a django application to have accept localized date format (e.g dd/mm/yy) in a DateField on an admin form ? I have a model class : class MyModel(models.Model): date = models.DateField("Date") And associated admin class class MyModelAdmin(admin.ModelAdmin): pass On django administration interface, I would like to be able to input a date in following format : dd/mm/yyyy. However, the date field in the admin form expects yyyy-mm-dd. How can I customize things ? • Reverting CoreData data

  I have an NSTableView which is populated via a CoreData-backed NSArrayController. Users are able to edit any field they choose within the NSTableView. When they select the rows that they have modified and press a button, the data is sent to a third-party webservice. Provided the webservice accepts the updated values, I want to commit those values to my persistent store. If, however, the webservice returns an error (or simply fails to return), I want the edited fields to revert to their original values. To complicate matters, I have a number of other editable controls, backed by CoreData, which do not need to resort to this behaviour. I believe the solution to this problem revolves around the creation of a secondary Managed Object context, which I would use only for values edited within that particularly NSTableView. But I'm confused as to how the two MOC would interact with each other. What's the best solution to this problem?

• How can I have a serializable struct that wraps it's self as an int32 implicitly? in C#?

  Long story short, I have a struct (see below) that contains exactly one field: private int value; I've also implemented implicit conversion operators: public static implicit operator int(Outlet val) { return val.value; } public static implicit operator Outlet(int val) { return new Outlet(val); } I've implemented all of the following : IComparable, IComparable<Cart>, IComparable<int>, IConvertible, IEquatable<Cart>, IEquatable<int>, IFormattable I'm at a point where I really have no clue why, but whenever I serialize this object, I get no value. For instance, with XmlSerialization: <Outlet /> Also, I'm not solely concerned about XmlSerialization, I'm concerned about ALL serialization (binary for instance) How can I ensure that this serializes properly? NOTE: I did this because mapping an int,int dictionary seemed rather poorly typed to me when explicit objects with validation behavior were desired.

  Trying to get my project updated to MVC3, something I just can't find: I have a simple datatype of ENUMS: public enum States() { AL,AK,AZ,...WY } Which I want to use as a DropDown/SelectList in my view of a model that contains this datatype: public class FormModel() { public States State {get; set;} } Pretty straight forward: when I go to use the auto-generate view for this partial class, it ignores this type. I need a simple select list that sets the value of the enum as the selected item when I hit submit and process via my AJAX - JSON POST Method. • Limit the model data fields serialized by Web API based on the return type Interface

  We're updating our architecture to use a single object model for desktop, web and mobile that can be used in the MVVM pattern. I would like to be able to limit the data fields that are serialized through Web API by using interfaces on the controllers. This is required because the model objects for mobile are stored in HTML5 local storage so don't carry optional data while a thin desktop client would be able to store (and work with) more data. To achieve this a model will implement the different interfaces that define which data fields should be serialized and there will be a controller specific to the interface. The problem is that the Web API always serializes every field in the model even if it is not part of the interface being returned. How can we only serialize fields in the returned interface?

It's acting as a gateway w/NAT and has been so for quite some time. • Are there programming languages taht rely on non-latin alphabets?

  Every programming language I have ever seen has been based on the Latin alphabet, this is not surprising considering I live in Canada... But it only really makes sense that there would be programming languages based on other alphabets, or else bright computer scientists across the world would have to learn a new alphabet to go on in the field. I know for a fact that people in countries dominated by other alphabets develop languages based off the Latin alphabet (eg. Ruby from Japan), but just how common is it for programming languages to be based off of other alphabets like Arabic, or Cyrillic, or even writing systems which are not alphabetic but rather logographic in nature such as Japanese Kanji? Also are any of these languages in active widespread use, or are they mainly used as teaching tools? This is something that has bugged me since I started programming, and I have never run across someone who could think of a real answer.

  If I have an abstract class in java named Foo and it has an implementor named Bar then I want to know the following. lets say Foo looks something like public abstract class Foo { Service serviceFoo ... } And Bar is public class Bar extends Foo { ... } Also, lets assume I have an instance with Foo, named foo, currently that has serviceFoo instantiated If I then declare: Foo foo = new Bar(); will this create a a new instance of Bar that has serviceFoo instantiated or not? E.g. will that field be inherited and instantiated or just inherited?

• C# property definition

  For C# properties, I can do this: public class Employee{ public string Name { get; private set; } public Employee(string name){ Name = name; } } which means that the Name property can be set within the class Employee & can be read publicly. But, if I want to restrict the set to only within the constructors of the Employee class, I need to do: public class Employee{ public readonly string Name = String.Empty; public Employee(string name){ Name = name; } } But, for this case, I had to change the property to a field. Is there any reason this is not possible/allowed in C#: public class Employee{ public string Name { get; private readonly set; } public Employee(string name){ Name = name; } } IMO this will allow us to have properties which can be set only in the constructor & does not require us to change properties to fields...   I am using javax.swing.SwingWorker for the first time. I want to update a JLabel from the interim result published by the swing worker as follows: publish("Published String"); Now to update the JLabel, I have coded the following: process(List<String> chunks) { if (chunks.size() > 0) { String text = chunks.get(chunks.size() - 1); label.setText(text); } } The above code works but my problem(or to be more specific, my doubt) is as follows: The above swing worker task is an annonymous inner class so it can access label field. But what if I want to make the swing worker class a non-inner class. Should I need to pass label as an argument to the constructor of swing worker class so that the process() method can access. Or Is there any other way? What approach does other developer follow to update UI components from the swing worker class' result when the swing worker class is not an inner class?

• Can you use Github App with Beanstalk?

  Being new to Git, I wanted to use a GUI (Windows based) and preferred the Github App. However, I would like to integrate this site with a Beanstalkapp account. I'm pretty sure this is possible, but I can't figure it out. Inside of the Github app, I navigate to my repository. When I choose "Tools Settings...", I place the Git Clone URL for the repository provided by Beanstalk into the "Primary Remote (origin)" field in my Github app. Now when I click "Publish" (which says "Click to publish this branch to server" when I hover over it) it changes to "Publishing...". After a few seconds, I get this error: server failure The remote server disconnected. Try again later, or if this persists, contact [email protected] I am pretty sure I set the SSH keys up properly (never done this before). I added the key to both the Beanstalkapp and my Github web account.

  Given this field: char lookup_ext[8192] = {0}; // Gets filled later And this statement: unsigned short *slt = (unsigned short*) lookup_ext; What happens behind the scenes? lookup_ext[1669] returns 67 = 0100 0011 (C), lookup_ext[1670] returns 78 = 0100 1110 (N) and lookup_ext[1671] returns 68 = 0100 0100 (D); yet slt[1670] returns 18273 = 0100 0111 0110 0001. I'm trying to port this to C#, so besides an easy way out of this, I'm also wondering what really happens here. Been a while since I used C++ regularly. Thanks!

• bad performance from too many caught errors?

  I have a large project in C# (.NET 2.0) which contains very large chunks of code generated by SubSonic. Is a try-catch like this causing a horrible performance hit? for (int x = 0; x < identifiers.Count; x++) {decimal target = 0; try { target = Convert.ToDecimal(assets[x + identifiers.Count * 2]); // target % } catch { targetEmpty = true; }} What is happening is if the given field that is being passed in is not something that can be converted to a decimal it sets a flag which is then used further along in the record to determine something else. The problem is that the application is literally throwing 10s of thousands of exceptions as I am parsing through 30k records. The process as a whole takes almost 10 minutes for everything and my overall task is to improve that time some and this seemed like easy hanging fruit if its a bad design idea. Any thoughts would be helpful (be kind, its been a miserable day) thanks, Chris
